भीष्म उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् प्रतर्दनो मैथिलश्च संग्रामं यत्र चक्रतुः

Bhīṣma said: In this connection, an ancient history is recounted about when Pratardana and the king of Mithila fought a battle.

भीष्म ने कहा: इस संबंध में, एक प्राचीन इतिहास का वर्णन किया गया है जब प्रतर्दन और मिथिला के राजा ने युद्ध किया था।

यज्ञोपवीती संग्रामे जनको मैथिलो यथा योधानुद्धर्षयामास तन्निबोध युधिष्ठिर

O Yudhiṣṭhira! Listen to this. Janaka of Mithila was invested with the sacred thread of performing a sacrifice through a battle and delighted his warriors.

हे युधिष्ठिर! इस बात सुनो। मिथिला के जनक को युद्ध के माध्यम से यज्ञ करने का पवित्र धागा पहनाया गया और उन्होंने अपने योद्धाओं को प्रसन्न किया।

जनको मैथिलो राजा महात्मा सर्वतत्त्ववित् योधान्स्वान्दर्शयामास स्वर्गं नरकमेव च

King Janaka of Mithila was great in his soul and knew the truth about everything. He portrayed both heaven and hell before his warriors.

मिथिला के राजा जनक आत्मा में महान थे और हर चीज़ के बारे में सच्चाई जानते थे। उसने अपने योद्धाओं के सामने स्वर्ग और नर्क दोनों का चित्रण किया।

अभीतानामिमे लोका भास्वन्तो हन्त पश्यत पूर्णा गन्धर्वकन्याभिः सर्वकामदुहोऽक्षयाः

"Behold those radiant worlds, meant for people who are not frightened. They are eternal, full of gāndharva maidens, and yield every object of desire.

"उन उज्ज्वल संसारों को देखो, जो उन लोगों के लिए हैं जो भयभीत नहीं हैं। वे शाश्वत हैं, गंधर्व युवतियों से भरे हुए हैं, और इच्छा की हर वस्तु प्रदान करते हैं।

इमे पलायमानानां नरकाः प्रत्युपस्थिताः अकीर्तिः शाश्वती चैव पतितव्यमनन्तरम्

Hell presents itself to those who run away. They immediately descend there and obtain eternal ill fame.

जो लोग भागते हैं उनके लिए नरक स्वयं प्रस्तुत होता है। वे तुरंत वहां उतरते हैं और शाश्वत अपयश प्राप्त करते हैं।

तान्दृष्ट्वारीन्विजयतो भूत्वा संत्यागबुद्धयः नरकस्याप्रतिष्ठस्य मा भूत वशवर्तिनः

Having seen those, having made up your minds to give yourselves up, be victorious. Do not be subjugated in a hell that has no foundation.

उन्हें देखकर, अपने आप को त्यागने का मन बनाकर, विजयी बनो। ऐसे नर्क के वश में मत रहो जिसका कोई आधार नहीं है।

त्यागमूलं हि शूराणां स्वर्गद्वारमनुत्तमम् इत्युक्तास्ते नृपतिना योधाः परपुरंजय

For brave people, giving themselves up is the foundation for the supreme gate of heaven." O conqueror of enemy cities! This is what the king told his warriors.

बहादुर लोगों के लिए, खुद को समर्पित करना स्वर्ग के सर्वोच्च द्वार की नींव है।" हे शत्रु शहरों के विजेता! राजा ने अपने योद्धाओं से यही कहा था।

व्यजयन्त रणे शत्रून्हर्षयन्तो जनेश्वरम् तस्मादात्मवता नित्यं स्थातव्यं रणमूर्धनि

They defeated the enemy in the battle and brought delight to that lord of men. Therefore, he must always establish himself in the forefront of the battle.

उन्होंने युद्ध में शत्रु को परास्त किया और मनुष्यों के स्वामी को प्रसन्न किया। इसलिए, उसे हमेशा खुद को लड़ाई में सबसे आगे स्थापित करना चाहिए।

गजानां रथिनो मध्ये रथानामनु सादिनः सादिनामन्तरा स्थाप्यं पादातमिह दंशितम्

Chariots must be in the middle of the elephants. Horse riders must be to the rear of the chariots. Armoured foot soldiers must be beyond the horse riders.

रथ हाथियों के मध्य में होना चाहिए। घुड़सवारों को रथों के पीछे होना चाहिए। घुड़सवारों से आगे बख्तरबंद पैदल सैनिक होने चाहिए।

य एवं व्यूहते राजा स नित्यं जयते द्विषः तस्मादेवं विधातव्यं नित्यमेव युधिष्ठिर

The king who arranges a vyūha in this way is always victorious over the enemy. O Yudhiṣṭhira! It has been decreed that it must always be this way.

जो राजा इस प्रकार व्यूह रचना करता है, वह सदैव शत्रु पर विजयी होता है। हे युधिष्ठिर! यह आदेश दिया गया है कि यह हमेशा इसी प्रकार होना चाहिए।

सर्वे सुकृतमिच्छन्तः सुयुद्धेनातिमन्यवः क्षोभयेयुरनीकानि सागरं मकरा इव

All those who wish to act well and desire to fight well must agitate the army, like makara-s in an ocean.

वे सभी जो अच्छा कार्य करना चाहते हैं और अच्छी तरह से लड़ना चाहते हैं, उन्हें समुद्र में मकर की तरह सेना को उत्तेजित करना होगा।

हर्षयेयुर्विषण्णांश्च व्यवस्थाप्य परस्परम् जितां च भूमिं रक्षेत भग्नान्नात्यनुसारयेत्

They must stand next to each other, delighting those who are distressed. He must protect the land that has been won and not unduly pursue those who have been routed.

उन्हें एक-दूसरे के बगल में खड़ा होना चाहिए और उन लोगों को प्रसन्न करना चाहिए जो व्यथित हैं। उसे उस भूमि की रक्षा करनी चाहिए जो जीती गई है और उन लोगों का अनुचित रूप से पीछा नहीं करना चाहिए जिन्हें हरा दिया गया है।

पुनरावर्तमानानां निराशानां च जीविते न वेगः सुसहो राजंस्तस्मान्नात्यनुसारयेत्

O king! Those who have given up hope of remaining alive and return to fight again represent a force that is not easy to counter. Therefore, one should not pursue too muc.

हे राजा! जिन लोगों ने जीवित रहने और फिर से लड़ने की उम्मीद छोड़ दी है, वे एक ऐसी ताकत का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं जिसका मुकाबला करना आसान नहीं है। इसलिए, किसी को भी बहुत ज्यादा पीछा नहीं करना चाहिए।

न हि प्रहर्तुमिच्छन्ति शूराः प्राद्रवतां भयात् तस्मात्पलायमानानां कुर्यान्नात्यनुसारणम्

Nor should brave ones wish to strike those who are afraid and are running away. Because they are running away, one should not pursue them.

न ही वीरों को उन लोगों पर वार करने की इच्छा करनी चाहिए जो डरे हुए हैं और भाग रहे हैं। क्योंकि वे भाग रहे हैं, किसी को उनका पीछा नहीं करना चाहिए।

चराणामचरा ह्यन्नमदंष्ट्रा दंष्ट्रिणामपि अपाणयः पाणिमतामन्नं शूरस्य कातराः

The immobile are devoured by the mobile. Those without teeth are devoured by the ones with teeth. Those without hands are devoured by those with hands. Cowards are devoured by the brave.

गतिहीनों को मोबाइल निगल जाता है। जिनके दाँत नहीं हैं उन्हें दाँत वाले ही खा जाते हैं। जिनके हाथ नहीं हैं उन्हें हाथ वाले ही निगल जाते हैं। कायरों को बहादुर लोग खा जाते हैं।

समानपृष्ठोदरपाणिपादाः; पश्चाच्छूरं भीरवोऽनुव्रजन्ति अतो भयार्ताः प्रणिपत्य भूयः; कृत्वाञ्जलीनुपतिष्ठन्ति शूरान्

Though their backs, stomachs, hands and feet are equal, cowards follow the brave. Those who are distressed and scared repeatedly seek refuge with the ones who are brave, joining their hands in supplication.

यद्यपि उनकी पीठ, पेट, हाथ और पैर समान होते हैं, फिर भी कायर बहादुरों का अनुसरण करते हैं। जो लोग दुःखी और भयभीत हैं, वे बार-बार हाथ जोड़कर वीरों की शरण लेते हैं।

शूरबाहुषु लोकोऽयं लम्बते पुत्रवत्सदा तस्मात्सर्वास्ववस्थासु शूरः संमानमर्हति

This world hangs from the hands of brave ones, like a young son. That is the reason a brave person deserves respect in every possible situation.

वीरों के हाथ से यह संसार जवान बेटे की तरह लटक जाता है। यही कारण है कि एक बहादुर व्यक्ति हर संभव स्थिति में सम्मान का पात्र होता है।

न हि शौर्यात्परं किंचित्त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते शूरः सर्वं पालयति सर्वं शूरे प्रतिष्ठितम्

There is nothing in the three worlds that is superior to bravery. The brave person protects everything. Everything is established in the brave person.

तीनों लोकों में वीरता से बढ़कर कोई वस्तु नहीं है। वीर व्यक्ति हर चीज़ की रक्षा करता है। वीर व्यक्ति में सब कुछ स्थापित हो जाता है।
