भीष्म उवाच अथ तत्र महार्चिष्माननलो वातसारथिः तस्याविदूरे रक्षार्थं खगेन्द्रेण कृतोऽभवत्

Bhīṣma said: For the sake of protection, the Indra among the birds had kindled a great and blazing fire there and the wind was its charioteer.

भीष्म ने कहा: सुरक्षा के लिए, पक्षियों के बीच इंद्र ने वहां एक महान और धधकती आग जलाई थी और हवा उसका सारथी थी।

स चापि पार्श्वे सुष्वाप विश्वस्तो बकराट्तदा कृतघ्नस्तु स दुष्टात्मा तं जिघांसुरजागरत्

Having done this, the king of the cranes trustfully went to sleep by the side. Wishing to kill him, the evil-souled ingrate remained awake.

ऐसा करने के बाद, सारसों का राजा विश्वासपूर्वक उसके पास सो गया। उसे मार डालने की इच्छा से दुष्टात्मा कृतघ्न जागता रहा।

ततोऽलातेन दीप्तेन विश्वस्तं निजघान तम् निहत्य च मुदा युक्तः सोऽनुबन्धं न दृष्टवान्

With a blazing brand, he killed that trustful one. Having killed him, he was delighted, not seeing the consequences this would lead to.

एक धधकते ब्रांड के साथ, उसने उस भरोसेमंद व्यक्ति को मार डाला। उसे मारने के बाद, वह खुश था, उसे नहीं पता था कि इसके क्या परिणाम होंगे।

स तं विपक्षरोमाणं कृत्वाग्नावपचत्तदा तं गृहीत्वा सुवर्णं च ययौ द्रुततरं द्विजः

He removed the wings and the feathers and cooked the rest over the fire. Then, taking this and the gold, the brāhmaṇa left speedily.

उसने पंख और पंखों को हटा दिया और बाकी को आग पर पकाया। फिर, यह और सोना लेकर, ब्राह्मण तेजी से चला गया।

ततोऽन्यस्मिन्गते चाह्नि विरूपाक्षोऽब्रवीत्सुतम् न प्रेक्षे राजधर्माणमद्य पुत्र खगोत्तमम्

After another day passed, Virūpākṣa told his son, "O son! Today, I have not seen Rājadharma, supreme among birds.

एक और दिन बीत जाने पर विरुपाक्ष ने अपने पुत्र से कहा, "हे पुत्र! आज मैंने पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ राजधर्म को नहीं देखा।

स पूर्वसंध्यां ब्रह्माणं वन्दितुं याति सर्वदा मां चादृष्ट्वा कदाचित्स न गच्छति गृहान्खगः

Every evening, he always goes to show his obeisance to Brahmā. After this, the bird never goes home without having seen me first.

हर शाम, वह हमेशा ब्रह्मा को अपनी आज्ञाकारिता दिखाने के लिए जाता है। इसके बाद वह पक्षी मुझे देखे बिना कभी घर नहीं जाता।

उभे द्विरात्रं संध्ये वै नाभ्यगात्स ममालयम् तस्मान्न शुध्यते भावो मम स ज्ञायतां सुहृत्

It is now two evenings and two nights since he came to my residence. Therefore, I am disturbed and must find out about my well-wisher.

अब उन्हें मेरे आवास पर आए हुए दो शाम और दो रातें हो गई हैं। इसलिए, मैं परेशान हूं और मुझे अपने शुभचिंतक के बारे में पता लगाना चाहिए।'

स्वाध्यायेन वियुक्तो हि ब्रह्मवर्चसवर्जितः तं गतस्तत्र मे शङ्का हन्यात्तं स द्विजाधमः

That worst among brāhmana-s was disunited from studying and the radiance of the brāhman wasn't there in him. He has gone there and it is my fear that he might have killed him.

वह सबसे अधम ब्राह्मण विद्या से विमुख हो गया था और उसमें ब्राह्मण का तेज नहीं था। वह वहां गया है और मुझे डर है कि उसने उसे मार डाला होगा.'

दुराचारस्तु दुर्बुद्धिरिङ्गितैर्लक्षितो मया निष्क्रियो दारुणाकारः कृष्णो दस्युरिवाधमः

I noticed that his conduct was wicked and from signs, could make out that he was evil-minded. He did not perform rites and was terrible in form. He was dark, like the worst among bandits.

मैंने देखा कि उसका आचरण दुष्ट था और संकेतों से पता चल जाता था कि वह दुष्ट मानसिकता वाला है। वह संस्कार नहीं करता था और उसका रूप बहुत भयानक था। वह डाकुओं में सबसे बुरे की तरह काला था।

गौतमः स गतस्तत्र तेनोद्विग्नं मनो मम पुत्र शीघ्रमितो गत्वा राजधर्मनिवेशनम् ज्ञायतां स विशुद्धात्मा यदि जीवति माचिरम्

Gautama has gone there. That is the reason my mind is anxious. O son! Swiftly go to Rājadharma's abode. Immediately find out if the one who is pure in his soul is still alive."

गौतम वहाँ गये हैं। इसी कारण मेरा मन व्याकुल है। हे वत्स शीघ्र ही राजधर्म के लोक में जाओ। तुरंत पता लगाओ कि जो आत्मा में शुद्ध है वह अभी भी जीवित है या नहीं।”

स एवमुक्तस्त्वरितो रक्षोभिः सहितो ययौ न्यग्रोधं तत्र चापश्यत्कङ्कालं राजधर्मणः

Having been thus addressed, he quickly went to the banyan tree with some rākṣasa-s and saw Rājadharma's skeleton there.

इस प्रकार संबोधित करने के बाद, वह तुरंत कुछ राक्षसों के साथ बरगद के पेड़ के पास गया और वहां राजधर्म का कंकाल देखा।

स रुदन्नगमत्पुत्रो राक्षसेन्द्रस्य धीमतः त्वरमाणः परं शक्त्या गौतमग्रहणाय वै

Weeping, the intelligent son of the Indra among the rākṣasa-s speedily rushed, to the best of his capacity, to seize Gautama.

रोते हुए, राक्षसों के बीच इंद्र का बुद्धिमान पुत्र गौतम को पकड़ने के लिए अपनी पूरी क्षमता से तेजी से दौड़ा।

ततोऽविदूरे जगृहुर्गौतमं राक्षसास्तदा राजधर्मशरीरं च पक्षास्थिचरणोज्झितम्

A short distance away, the rākṣasa-s seized Gautama. They also obtained Rājadharma's body, bereft of the wings, the bones and the feet.

थोड़ी ही दूरी पर राक्षसों ने गौतम को पकड़ लिया। उन्होंने पंखों, हड्डियों और पैरों से रहित राजधर्म का शरीर भी प्राप्त किया।

तमादायाथ रक्षांसि द्रुतं मेरुव्रजं ययुः राज्ञश्च दर्शयामासुः शरीरं राजधर्मणः कृतघ्नं पुरुषं तं च गौतमं पापचेतसम्

Having taken this, the rākṣasa-s hastened to Meruvraja. They showed Rājadharma's body and the ungrateful man, Gautama, wicked in his senses, to the king.

इसे लेने के बाद, राक्षस मेरुवराज की ओर तेजी से बढ़े। उन्होंने राजा को राजधर्म का शव और कृतघ्न गौतम, जो अपनी इंद्रियों में दुष्ट था, दिखाया।

रुरोद राजा तं दृष्ट्वा सामात्यः सपुरोहितः आर्तनादश्च सुमहानभूत्तस्य निवेशने

The king, with his advisers and priests, lamented on seeing him. Great sounds of lamentation arose in the residence.

राजा ने अपने सलाहकारों और पुजारियों सहित उसे देखकर विलाप किया। आवास में विलाप की महान ध्वनियाँ उठने लगीं।

सस्त्रीकुमारं च पुरं बभूवास्वस्थमानसम् अथाब्रवीन्नृपः पुत्रं पापोऽयं वध्यतामिति

The city, with the women and the children, were distracted. The king told his son, "Slay this wretch.

महिलाओं और बच्चों सहित शहर का ध्यान भटक गया। राजा ने अपने पुत्र से कहा, “इस दुष्ट को मार डालो।

अस्य मांसैरिमे सर्वे विहरन्तु यथेष्टतः पापाचारः पापकर्मा पापात्मा पापनिश्चयः हन्तव्योऽयं मम मतिर्भवद्भिरिति राक्षसाः

As you wish, all of you merrily feast on his flesh. He is wicked in his conduct. He is evil in his deeds. He is dastardly in his soul. His determination is sinful. It is my view that the rākṣasa-s should kill him."

जैसी तुम्हारी इच्छा हो, तुम सब उसके मांस का आनन्दपूर्वक भोग करो। वह अपने आचरण में दुष्ट है. वह अपने कर्मों में दुष्ट है। वह अपनी आत्मा में कायर है. उसका निश्चय पापपूर्ण है। मेरा विचार है कि राक्षसों को उसे मार डालना चाहिए।"

इत्युक्ता राक्षसेन्द्रेण राक्षसा घोरविक्रमाः नैच्छन्त तं भक्षयितुं पापकर्मायमित्युत

Having been addressed by the Indra among the rākṣasa-s, the rākṣasa-s, terrible in their valour, did not wish to eat him and said,

राक्षसों के बीच इंद्र द्वारा संबोधित किए जाने पर, वीरता में भयानक राक्षसों ने उसे खाने की इच्छा नहीं की और कहा,

दस्यूनां दीयतामेष साध्वद्य पुरुषाधमः इत्यूचुस्तं महाराज राक्षसेन्द्रं निशाचराः

"He is wicked in his deeds. It is proper that this worst among men should be given to the bandits." O great king! The travellers of the night addressed the Indra among the rākṣasa-s in this way.

"वह अपने कर्मों में दुष्ट है। यह उचित है कि मनुष्यों में इस सबसे बुरे व्यक्ति को डाकुओं को दे दिया जाए।" हे महान राजा! रात के यात्रियों ने राक्षसों के बीच इन्द्र को इस प्रकार सम्बोधित किया।

शिरोभिश्च गता भूमिमूचू रक्षोगणाधिपम् न दातुमर्हसि त्वं नो भक्षणायास्य किल्बिषम्

Before the lord of the large number of rākṣasa-s, they bowed their heads down on the ground and said, "You should not give him to us to eat. He is evil."

बड़ी संख्या में राक्षसों के स्वामी के सामने, उन्होंने जमीन पर अपना सिर झुकाया और कहा, "आपको उसे हमें खाने के लिए नहीं देना चाहिए। वह दुष्ट है।"

एवमस्त्विति तानाह राक्षसेन्द्रो निशाचरान् दस्यूनां दीयतामेष कृतघ्नोऽद्यैव राक्षसाः

Having been thus addressed by the travellers of the night, the Indra among rākṣasa-s instructed the rākṣasa-s that he should be given to the bandits.

रात के यात्रियों द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, राक्षसों में से इंद्र ने राक्षसों को निर्देश दिया कि उसे डाकुओं को दे दिया जाना चाहिए।

इत्युक्ते तस्य ते दासाः शूलमुद्गरपाणयः छित्त्वा तं खण्डशः पापं दस्युभ्यः प्रददुस्तदा

Thus instructed, the servants picked up tridents and clubs in their hands. They chopped the wicked one up into pieces and gave him to the bandits.

इस प्रकार निर्देश दिये जाने पर सेवकों ने अपने हाथों में त्रिशूल और लाठियाँ उठा लीं। उन्होंने उस दुष्ट को टुकड़े-टुकड़े करके डाकुओं को सौंप दिया।

दस्यवश्चापि नैच्छन्त तमत्तुं पापकारिणम् क्रव्यादा अपि राजेन्द्र कृतघ्नं नोपभुञ्जते

However, even the bandits did not desire to eat the evil-acting one. O Indra among kings! Predatory creatures did not eat the ingrate either.

हालाँकि, डाकू भी उस दुष्ट को खाने की इच्छा नहीं रखते थे। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! शिकारी जीव भी अनग्रेट को नहीं खाते थे।

ब्रह्मघ्ने च सुरापे च चोरे भग्नव्रते तथा निष्कृतिर्विहिता राजन्कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः

"If someone kills a brāhmaṇa, if someone is a drunkard, if someone is a thief, if someone has broken his vows—there are indicated means of atonement. O king! But there is no salvation for someone who is ungrateful.

"यदि कोई ब्राह्मण की हत्या करता है, यदि कोई शराबी है, यदि कोई चोर है, यदि किसी ने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा तोड़ दी है - तो प्रायश्चित के साधन बताए गए हैं। हे राजा! लेकिन जो कृतघ्न है उसके लिए कोई मुक्ति नहीं है।

मित्रद्रोही नृशंसश्च कृतघ्नश्च नराधमः क्रव्यादैः कृमिभिश्चान्यैर्न भुज्यन्ते हि तादृशाः

Someone who injures his friends, someone who is violent and someone who is ungrateful is the worst among men. Predatory creatures, worms and other such beings will not devour someone like this."

जो अपने दोस्तों को चोट पहुँचाता है, जो हिंसक है और जो कृतघ्न है, वह मनुष्यों में सबसे बुरा है। हिंसक जीव-जंतु, कीड़े-मकौड़े और ऐसे अन्य जीव-जन्तु ऐसे किसी को नहीं खाएँगे।”
