अतिथिरुवाच उपदेशं तु ते विप्र करिष्येऽहं यथागमम् गुरुणा मे यथाख्यातमर्थतस्तच्च मे शृणु

The guest said: I will give you instruction according to the scriptures. Listen to me as it was explained to me by my teacher.

अतिथि ने कहा: मैं तुम्हें शास्त्र के अनुसार शिक्षा दूँगा। मेरी बात सुनो जैसा कि मेरे शिक्षक ने मुझे समझाया था।

यत्र पूर्वाभिसर्गेण धर्मचक्रं प्रवर्तितम् नैमिषे गोमतीतीरे तत्र नागाह्वयं पुरम्

Where the wheel of Dharma was turned by the first descent, At Naimiṣa on the banks of the Gomati, there is a city called Nāga.

जहां धर्म का पहिया पहले अवतरण द्वारा घुमाया गया था, वहां गोमती के तट पर नैमिषा में नागा नामक एक शहर है।

समग्रैस्त्रिदशैस्तत्र इष्टमासीद्द्विजर्षभ यत्रेन्द्रातिक्रमं चक्रे मान्धाता राजसत्तमः

O best of Brahmins, the gods were all present there, where the best of kings, Mandhata, transgressed Indra.

हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ, जहां राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ मांधाता ने इंद्र का अपमान किया था, वहां सभी देवता उपस्थित थे।

कृताधिवासो धर्मात्मा तत्र चक्षुःश्रवा महान् पद्मनाभो महाभागः पद्म इत्येव विश्रुतः

The great one with the name of Cakṣuḥśravā, who had a virtuous soul, had taken up residence there. The illustrious one named Padmanābha, well-known as Padma,

चक्षुश्रवा नाम के महान व्यक्ति, जिनकी आत्मा पुण्यात्मा थी, ने वहां निवास किया था। पद्मनाभ नाम का वह तेजस्वी व्यक्ति, जो पद्मा के नाम से प्रसिद्ध है,

स वाचा कर्मणा चैव मनसा च द्विजर्षभ प्रसादयति भूतानि त्रिविधे वर्त्मनि स्थितः

He, the best of Brahmins, pleases beings by speech, action and mind, being established in the three ways.

वह ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ, वाणी, कर्म और मन तीनों प्रकार से स्थित होकर प्राणियों को प्रसन्न करता है।

साम्ना दानेन भेदेन दण्डेनेति चतुर्विधम् विषमस्थं जनं स्वं च चक्षुर्ध्यानेन रक्षति

He protects his own people who are in a difficult situation and himself by means of the fourfold means: conciliation, gifts, dissension, and punishment.

वह अपने लोगों की रक्षा करता है जो एक कठिन परिस्थिति में हैं और खुद को चार तरीकों से बचाता है: सुलह, उपहार, असहमति और सजा।

तमभिक्रम्य विधिना प्रष्टुमर्हसि काङ्क्षितम् स ते परमकं धर्मं नमिथ्या दर्शयिष्यति

Having approached him, you should ask him according to the proper procedure about what you desire. He will show you the supreme Dharma, not falsely.

उसके पास जाकर विधिपूर्वक अपनी इच्छा के विषय में पूछना चाहिए। वह तुम्हें मिथ्या नहीं, परम धर्म बतायेगा।

स हि सर्वातिथिर्नागो बुद्धिशास्त्रविशारदः गुणैरनवमैर्युक्तः समस्तैराभिकामिकैः

He is the guest of all, a nāga, skilled in the scriptures of wisdom, endowed with incomparable qualities, all of them desirable.

वह सभी का अतिथि है, नागा है, ज्ञान के शास्त्रों में कुशल है, अतुलनीय गुणों से संपन्न है, वे सभी वांछनीय हैं।

प्रकृत्या नित्यसलिलो नित्यमध्ययने रतः तपोदमाभ्यां संयुक्तो वृत्तेनानवरेण च

By nature, he was always full of water, always devoted to study, united with austerities and humility, and with an incomparable conduct.

स्वभाव से वह सदैव जल से परिपूर्ण, अध्ययन के प्रति समर्पित, तपस्या और नम्रता से युक्त तथा अतुलनीय आचरण वाला था।

यज्वा दानरुचिः क्षान्तो वृत्ते च परमे स्थितः सत्यवागनसूयुश्च शीलवानभिसंश्रितः

He was a sacrificer, fond of giving, patient, and established in the highest conduct. He was truthful in speech, free from envy, virtuous, and devoted.

वह बलिदानी, देने का शौकीन, धैर्यवान और उच्चतम आचरण में स्थापित था। वह बोलने में सच्चा, ईर्ष्या से मुक्त, सदाचारी और समर्पित था।

शेषान्नभोक्ता वचनानुकूलो; हितार्जवोत्कृष्टकृताकृतज्ञः अवैरकृद्भूतहिते नियुक्तो; गङ्गाह्रदाम्भोऽभिजनोपपन्नः

One who eats the remainder of food, who is agreeable in speech, who is devoted to the welfare of others, who is truthful, who is grateful for good deeds, who is not hostile, who is engaged in the welfare of beings, who is born in the family of the waters of the Ganges,

जो बचा हुआ भोजन खाता है, जो वाणी में प्रसन्न है, जो दूसरों के कल्याण के लिए समर्पित है, जो सच्चा है, जो अच्छे कार्यों के लिए आभारी है, जो शत्रुतापूर्ण नहीं है, जो प्राणियों के कल्याण में लगा हुआ है, जो गंगा के पानी के परिवार में पैदा हुआ है।
