Shantiparvan · v2

O king, this is the extent of his night. He first creates the herbs, the life of all embodied beings.

Shantiparvan · v3

Shantiparvan · v5

In the Vedas it is said that the sky was created by the lord between the two halves of heaven and earth.

Shantiparvan · v6

And the duration of this is calculated by those who have mastered the Vedas and Vedāṅgas to be ten thousand years less a quarter, which is called a day. And the night of this is said by those who reflect on the inner self to be of the same duration.

Shantiparvan · v7

The great sage creates the ego, the divine self, and the four other sons from his body. O best of kings, they are said to be the fathers of the fathers.

The gods are the sons of the ancestors, the worlds are surrounded by the gods. Thus, O best of men, we have heard that the moving and unmoving are.

Shantiparvan · v9

Parameshthi, the ego, created the five elements: Earth, air, space, water, and light as the fifth.

Shantiparvan · v10

The night of this one is said to be the third, here, for one who is performing. Five thousand eons is said to be the day of this one.

Shantiparvan · v11

Sound, touch, form, taste, and smell are the five. These are the specific qualities in the five great elements, O king. By these the elements are pervaded day by day, O king.

Shantiparvan · v12

They long for one another, they are devoted to one another's welfare, they desire one another, and they compete with one another.

Shantiparvan · v13

Shantiparvan · v14

These three thousand eons are called a day of the mind-born ones. And this is the length of their night, O Lord of Men.

Shantiparvan · v15

O Lord of men, the mind moves about with all the senses. The senses do not see, but the mind sees.

Shantiparvan · v16

The eye sees forms, but not with the mind. When the mind is disturbed, even though the eye sees, it does not see. Thus all the senses are said to see.

Shantiparvan · v17

When the mind is withdrawn, O king, the senses are withdrawn. But when the senses are withdrawn, the mind is not withdrawn. Thus one should contemplate the senses as being dominated by the mind.

Shantiparvan · v18

The mind is said to be the lord of all the senses. All beings enter this, O one of great fame.
