युधिष्ठिर उवाच अबुद्धिपूर्वं यः पापं कुर्याद्भरतसत्तम मुच्यते स कथं तस्मादेनसस्तद्वदस्व मे

Yudhiṣṭhira asked: O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! If a person commits a sin out of ignorance, how can he be freed from it? Tell me about this.

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा: हे भरत वंश में श्रेष्ठ! यदि कोई व्यक्ति अज्ञानवश पाप कर बैठता है तो वह उससे कैसे मुक्त हो सकता है? मुझे इसके बारे में बताओ.

भीष्म उवाच अत्र ते वर्णयिष्येऽहमितिहासं पुरातनम् इन्द्रोतः शौनको विप्रो यदाह जनमेजयम्

Bhīṣma replied: In this connection, an ancient history is described. This is what the brāhmaṇa Indrota, the son of Śunaka, told Janamejaya.

भीष्म ने उत्तर दिया: इस संबंध में एक प्राचीन इतिहास का वर्णन किया गया है। शुनक के पुत्र ब्राह्मण इन्द्रोत ने जनमेजय से यही कहा।

आसीद्राजा महावीर्यः पारिक्षिज्जनमेजयः अबुद्धिपूर्वं ब्रह्महत्या तमागच्छन्महीपतिम्

There was an extremely valorous king named Janamejaya, the son of Pārīkṣit. In his ignorance, that lord of the earth committed the sin of killing a brāhmaṇa.

तं ब्राह्मणाः सर्व एव तत्यजुः सपुरोहिताः जगाम स वनं राजा दह्यमानो दिवानिशम्

All the brāhmana-s and the priests abandoned him. Tormented day and night, the king went to the forest.

सभी ब्राह्मणों और पुजारियों ने उसे त्याग दिया। दिन-रात कष्ट सहते हुए राजा वन में चले गये।

स प्रजाभिः परित्यक्तश्चकार कुशलं महत् अतिवेलं तपस्तेपे दह्यमानः स मन्युना

Abandoned by his subjects, he acted so that he might obtain great welfare. He was tormented by repentance and performed extreme austerities.

अपनी प्रजा द्वारा त्याग दिए जाने पर, उसने ऐसा कार्य किया ताकि उसे महान कल्याण प्राप्त हो सके। उन्हें पश्चाताप से पीड़ा हुई और उन्होंने घोर तपस्या की।

तत्रेतिहासं वक्ष्यामि धर्मस्यास्योपबृंहणम् दह्यमानः पापकृत्या जगाम जनमेजयः

I will tell you about that history, about how he accumulated dharma. Janamejaya was tormented because of the sin he had committed and departed.

मैं तुम्हें उस इतिहास के बारे में बताऊंगा कि उन्होंने धर्म का संचय कैसे किया। जनमेजय को अपने पाप के कारण पीड़ा हुई और वह चला गया।

वरिष्यमाण इन्द्रोतं शौनकं संशितव्रतम् समासाद्योपजग्राह पादयोः परिपीडयन्

He went to Indrota, the son of Śunaka, who was rigid in his vows. Having approached him, he seized his feet and embraced them.

वह शूनक के पुत्र इन्द्रोत के पास गये, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ था। उसके पास आकर उसने उसके पैर पकड़ लिए और उन्हें गले लगा लिया।

ततो भीतो महाप्राज्ञो जगर्हे सुभृशं तदा कर्ता पापस्य महतो भ्रूणहा किमिहागतः

At this, the immensely wise one was alarmed and severely reprimanded him. "You have committed a great sin, like one who has killed a foetus. Why have you come here?

इस पर अत्यंत बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति चिंतित हो गया और उसे कड़ी फटकार लगाई। "तुमने भ्रूण की हत्या के समान बहुत बड़ा पाप किया है। तुम यहाँ क्यों आये हो?"

किं तवास्मासु कर्तव्यं मा मा स्प्राक्षीः कथंचन गच्छ गच्छ न ते स्थानं प्रीणात्यस्मानिह ध्रुवम्

What do you wish to do to me? Under no circumstances, should you touch me. Go. Go from this spot. It is certain that your presence does not give me pleasure.

तुम मेरे साथ क्या करना चाहते हो? किसी भी हालत में तुम्हें मुझे छूना नहीं चाहिए. जाना। इस स्थान से चले जाओ. यह तो तय है कि तुम्हारी मौजूदगी मुझे ख़ुशी नहीं देती.

रुधिरस्येव ते गन्धः शवस्येव च दर्शनम् अशिवः शिवसंकाशो मृतो जीवन्निवाटसि

There is a smell of blood in you. You look like a corpse. It is inauspicious for you to be near auspicious things. Though you seem to be alive, you are actually dead.

तुममें खून की गंध है. तुम एक लाश की तरह लग रहे हो. शुभ वस्तुओं के निकट रहना आपके लिए अशुभ है। यद्यपि आप जीवित प्रतीत होते हैं, परंतु वास्तव में आप मर चुके हैं।

अन्तर्मृत्युरशुद्धात्मा पापमेवानुचिन्तयन् प्रबुध्यसे प्रस्वपिषि वर्तसे चरसे सुखी

You are dead within and your soul is impure. You are only thinking about wickedness. You are awake, but you are actually asleep. You are roaming around, unhappy.

तुम भीतर से मर चुके हो और तुम्हारी आत्मा अशुद्ध है। आप केवल दुष्टता के बारे में ही सोच रहे हैं। आप जाग रहे हैं, लेकिन वास्तव में आप सोये हुए हैं। तुम दुखी होकर घूम रहे हो.

मोघं ते जीवितं राजन्परिक्लिष्टं च जीवसि पापायेव च सृष्टोऽसि कर्मणे ह यवीयसे

O king! Your being alive is futile. You will live in misery. You have been created for wicked and ignoble deeds.

हे राजा! तुम्हारा जीवित रहना व्यर्थ है. तुम दुख में जीओगे। तू दुष्ट और नीच कर्मों के लिये रचा गया है।

बहु कल्याणमिच्छन्त ईहन्ते पितरः सुतान् तपसा देवतेज्याभिर्वन्दनेन तितिक्षया

In this world, fathers desire sons who will bring great welfare. They perform austerities, offer sacrifices to the gods, worship the gods and are patient.

इस संसार में पिता महान कल्याण करने वाले पुत्रों की इच्छा रखते हैं। वे तपस्या करते हैं, देवताओं को यज्ञ करते हैं, देवताओं की पूजा करते हैं और धैर्यवान होते हैं।

पितृवंशमिमं पश्य त्वत्कृते नरकं गतम् निरर्थाः सर्व एवैषामाशाबन्धास्त्वदाश्रयाः

Behold. Because of your deeds, this lineage of your forefathers has gone to hell. All their hopes have been rendered futile and so has their dependence on you.

देखो. तुम्हारे कर्मों के कारण तुम्हारे पूर्वजों का यह वंश नरक में चला गया है। उनकी सारी आशाएँ व्यर्थ हो गई हैं और उनकी आप पर निर्भरता भी ख़त्म हो गई है।

यान्पूजयन्तो विन्दन्ति स्वर्गमायुर्यशः सुखम् तेषु ते सततं द्वेषो ब्राह्मणेषु निरर्थकः

Those who worship brāhmana-s enjoy heaven, long lives, fame and happiness. But your constant hatred towards them has rendered this futile.

जो लोग ब्राह्मणों की पूजा करते हैं वे स्वर्ग, लंबी आयु, प्रसिद्धि और खुशी का आनंद लेते हैं। लेकिन उनके प्रति आपकी निरंतर नफरत ने इसे व्यर्थ बना दिया है।

इमं लोकं विमुच्य त्वमवाङ्मूर्धा पतिष्यसि अशाश्वतीः शाश्वतीश्च समाः पापेन कर्मणा

Having been freed from this world, because of your wicked deed, you will fall head downwards for many years, though not for eternity.

इस संसार से मुक्त होकर, अपने दुष्ट कर्मों के कारण, तुम अनंत काल के लिए नहीं, बल्कि कई वर्षों तक औंधे मुंह गिरोगे।

अद्यमानो जन्तुगृध्रैः शितिकण्ठैरयोमुखैः ततोऽपि पुनरावृत्तः पापयोनिं गमिष्यसि

You will be devoured by vultures and peacocks with iron beaks. Once this has happened, you will return again and advance towards a wicked birth.

तुम्हें लोहे की चोंच वाले गिद्ध और मोर खा जायेंगे। एक बार ऐसा हो जाने पर, आप फिर से लौटेंगे और दुष्ट जन्म की ओर बढ़ेंगे।

यदिदं मन्यसे राजन्नायमस्ति परः कुतः प्रतिस्मारयितारस्त्वां यमदूता यमक्षये

O king! If you think that this world is nothing, not to speak of the one hereafter, in Yāma's eternal abode, Yāma's messengers will remind you about this."

हे राजा! यदि आप सोचते हैं कि यह संसार कुछ भी नहीं है, तो उसके बाद यम के शाश्वत निवास की तो बात ही छोड़ दें, यम के दूत आपको इस बारे में याद दिलाएंगे।"
