भीष्म उवाच एतस्मिन्नन्तरे शून्ये नारदः समुपागमत् शुकं स्वाध्यायनिरतं वेदार्थान्वक्तुमीप्सितान्

Bhishma said: In the meantime, Narada came to the empty place, Wishing to explain the meanings of the Vedas to Shuka, who was engaged in self-study.

भीष्म ने कहा: इसी बीच, नारद स्वाध्याय में लगे शुक को वेदों का अर्थ समझाने की इच्छा से खाली स्थान पर आये।

देवर्षिं तु शुको दृष्ट्वा नारदं समुपस्थितम् अर्घ्यपूर्वेण विधिना वेदोक्तेनाभ्यपूजयत्

When the celestial sage Nārada arrived, Shuka saw him and honored him with the offerings prescribed in the Vedas.

Hearing the words of Narada, Shuka said, O descendant of Bharata, "You should join me with that which is beneficial in this world.""

नारद के वचन सुनकर शुक ने कहा, हे भरत के वंशज, "आपको उस चीज़ से जुड़ना चाहिए जो इस दुनिया में फायदेमंद है।"

नास्ति विद्यासमं चक्षुर्नास्ति विद्यासमं तपः नास्ति रागसमं दुःखं नास्ति त्यागसमं सुखम्

There is no eye like knowledge, there is no austerity like knowledge, There is no suffering like passion, there is no happiness like renunciation.

ज्ञान के समान कोई आँख नहीं है, ज्ञान के समान कोई तपस्या नहीं है, रजोगुण के समान कोई कष्ट नहीं है, त्याग के समान कोई सुख नहीं है।

निवृत्तिः कर्मणः पापात्सततं पुण्यशीलता सद्वृत्तिः समुदाचारः श्रेय एतदनुत्तमम्

The cessation of evil deeds, the constant practice of virtue, and good conduct are the best and supreme good.

बुरे कर्मों की समाप्ति, सदाचार का निरंतर अभ्यास और अच्छा आचरण सर्वोत्तम और सर्वोच्च अच्छाई है।

मानुष्यमसुखं प्राप्य यः सज्जति स मुह्यति नालं स दुःखमोक्षाय सङ्गो वै दुःखलक्षणम्

Having attained the misery of humanity, he who is attached is deluded. He is not fit for liberation from suffering, for attachment is the characteristic of suffering.

संसार में आसक्त रहने वाले का मन व्याकुल रहता है और मोह-माया का जाल बढ़ाता है। जो मोह के जाल से आच्छादित है वह इस लोक और परलोक में कष्ट भोगता है।

सर्वोपायेन कामस्य क्रोधस्य च विनिग्रहः कार्यः श्रेयोर्थिना तौ हि श्रेयोघातार्थमुद्यतौ

The suppression of desire and anger by every means is to be done by one who seeks the good, for they are intent on destroying the good.

हर तरह से इच्छा और क्रोध का दमन उस व्यक्ति को करना चाहिए जो अच्छाई चाहता है, क्योंकि वे अच्छाई को नष्ट करने पर आमादा हैं।

क्रोध से सदा तप की रक्षा करो, ईर्ष्या से महिमा की रक्षा करो, अहंकार और तिरस्कार से ज्ञान की रक्षा करो और प्रमाद से स्वयं की रक्षा करो।

आनृशंस्यं परो धर्मः क्षमा च परमं बलम् आत्मज्ञानं परं ज्ञानं न सत्याद्विद्यते परम्

Non-violence is the highest duty, forbearance is the highest strength, Self-knowledge is the highest knowledge, there is nothing higher than truth.

अहिंसा सर्वोच्च कर्तव्य है, सहनशीलता सर्वोच्च शक्ति है, आत्म-ज्ञान सर्वोच्च ज्ञान है, सत्य से बढ़कर कुछ भी नहीं है।

सत्यस्य वचनं श्रेयः सत्यादपि हितं भवेत् यद्भूतहितमत्यन्तमेतत्सत्यं मतं मम

The truth is the best speech, and even better than the truth is what is beneficial. What is beneficial to all beings is the ultimate truth, that is my opinion.

सत्य ही सर्वोत्तम वाणी है और सत्य से भी उत्तम वह है जो हितकर हो। जो सभी प्राणियों के लिए हितकारी है वही परम सत्य है, ऐसा मेरा मत है।

सर्वारम्भफलत्यागी निराशीर्निष्परिग्रहः येन सर्वं परित्यक्तं स विद्वान्स च पण्डितः

One who has renounced all undertakings, who is without desire, without possessions, He who has renounced everything, he is the wise one, he is the learned one.

जिसने सभी उपक्रमों को त्याग दिया है, जो इच्छा रहित है, बिना संपत्ति के है, जिसने सब कुछ त्याग दिया है, वह बुद्धिमान है, वह विद्वान है।

इन्द्रियैरिन्द्रियार्थेभ्यश्चरत्यात्मवशैरिह असज्जमानः शान्तात्मा निर्विकारः समाहितः

He moves about here with his senses under control, not being attached to the objects of the senses, His mind is calm, he is free from change, concentrated.

वह यहां अपनी इंद्रियों को वश में करके घूमता है, इंद्रियों के विषयों से आसक्त नहीं होता, उसका मन शांत होता है, वह परिवर्तन से मुक्त होता है, एकाग्र होता है।

आत्मभूतैरतद्भूतः सह चैव विनैव च स विमुक्तः परं श्रेयो नचिरेणाधिगच्छति

He who is not of the nature of the Self, but is of the nature of the Self, together with and without, He who is liberated, quickly attains the highest good.

जो स्वयं के स्वभाव का नहीं है, बल्कि स्वयं के स्वभाव का है, साथ में और बाहर, वह जो मुक्त है, वह शीघ्र ही सर्वोच्च कल्याण को प्राप्त कर लेता है।

अदर्शनमसंस्पर्शस्तथासंभाषणं सदा यस्य भूतैः सह मुने स श्रेयो विन्दते परम्

One who is never seen, never touched, and never spoken to by any being, O sage, he attains the highest good.

हे ऋषि, जिसे कोई भी प्राणी न कभी देखता है, न छूता है और न कभी बोलता है, वह परम कल्याण को प्राप्त होता है।

न हिंस्यात्सर्वभूतानि मैत्रायणगतश्चरेत् नेदं जन्म समासाद्य वैरं कुर्वीत केनचित्

One should not harm any being, and one should move about with a mind full of friendliness. Having obtained this human birth, one should not make enmity with anyone.

किसी भी प्राणी को नुकसान नहीं पहुंचाना चाहिए और मित्रता से भरे मन से आगे बढ़ना चाहिए। इस मनुष्य जन्म को प्राप्त करके मनुष्य को किसी से भी शत्रुता नहीं करनी चाहिए।

आकिंचन्यं सुसंतोषो निराशीष्ट्वमचापलम् एतदाहुः परं श्रेय आत्मज्ञस्य जितात्मनः

Poverty, contentment, absence of desire, and absence of fickleness, These are said to be the highest good for one who knows the Self and has conquered the Self.

दरिद्रता, संतोष, इच्छा का अभाव और चंचलता का अभाव, ये उस व्यक्ति के लिए सर्वोच्च भलाई कही गई हैं जो स्वयं को जानता है और जिसने स्वयं पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है।

Give up your possessions, O son, and be one who has conquered the senses. Take up the state of being without sorrow, which is free from fear in this world and the next.

हे पुत्र, अपनी संपत्ति त्याग दो और इंद्रियों पर विजय प्राप्त करने वाला बनो। दु:ख रहित होने की अवस्था अपनाएं, जो इस लोक और परलोक में भय से मुक्त हो।

निरामिषा न शोचन्ति त्यजेहामिषमात्मनः परित्यज्यामिषं सौम्य दुःखतापाद्विमोक्ष्यसे

The desireless do not grieve. I shall give up the desire for my own self. O gentle one, having given up desire, you will be liberated from suffering.

इच्छाहीन लोग शोक नहीं करते। मैं अपने लिए इच्छा छोड़ दूँगा। हे सज्जन, इच्छा त्याग कर तुम दुख से मुक्त हो जाओगे।

तपोनित्येन दान्तेन मुनिना संयतात्मना अजितं जेतुकामेन भाव्यं सङ्गेष्वसङ्गिना

By one who is always engaged in austerities, who is self-controlled, a sage, and who has his mind under control, One who desires to conquer the unconquered should live without attachment in the midst of attachments.

जो सदैव तपस्या में लगा रहता है, जो संयमी है, ऋषि है और जिसने अपने मन को वश में कर रखा है, जो अजेय पर विजय पाने की इच्छा रखता है, उसे आसक्तियों के बीच आसक्ति रहित होकर रहना चाहिए।

गुणसङ्गेष्वनासक्त एकचर्यारतः सदा ब्राह्मणो नचिरादेव सुखमायात्यनुत्तमम्

One who is not attached to the enjoyments of the senses, who is always devoted to solitary living, that brāhmaṇa soon attains the supreme happiness.

जो इन्द्रियों के भोगों में आसक्त नहीं है, जो सदैव एकान्त जीवन में लगा रहता है, वह ब्राह्मण शीघ्र ही परम सुख प्राप्त कर लेता है।

द्वंद्वारामेषु भूतेषु य एको रमते मुनिः विद्धि प्रज्ञानतृप्तं तं ज्ञानतृप्तो न शोचति

The sage who delights in solitude among beings who delight in duality, Know him to be satisfied with knowledge; he who is satisfied with knowledge does not grieve.

जो मुनि द्वैत में रमण करने वाले प्राणियों के बीच एकांत में रमण करता है, उसे ज्ञान से संतुष्ट जानो; जो ज्ञान से संतुष्ट है वह शोक नहीं करता।

शुभैर्लभति देवत्वं व्यामिश्रैर्जन्म मानुषम् अशुभैश्चाप्यधोजन्म कर्मभिर्लभतेऽवशः

By good deeds one attains divinity, by mixed deeds one is born as a human, And by bad deeds one is helplessly born in lower realms.

अच्छे कर्मों से मनुष्य को देवत्व प्राप्त होता है, मिश्रित कर्मों से मनुष्य का जन्म होता है और बुरे कर्मों से मनुष्य असहाय रूप से निचले लोकों में जन्म लेता है।

तत्र मृत्युजरादुःखैः सततं समभिद्रुतः संसारे पच्यते जन्तुस्तत्कथं नावबुध्यसे

There, constantly pursued by the sufferings of death and old age, The creature is cooked in the cycle of existence. How is it that you do not understand this?

वहाँ, मृत्यु और बुढ़ापे के कष्टों से लगातार पीड़ित, प्राणी अस्तित्व के चक्र में पक जाता है। ऐसा कैसे है कि आप इसे नहीं समझते?

अहिते हितसंज्ञस्त्वमध्रुवे ध्रुवसंज्ञकः अनर्थे चार्थसंज्ञस्त्वं किमर्थं नावबुध्यसे

You have the notion of good in what is bad, of permanence in what is impermanent, and of benefit in what is harmful. Why do you not understand this?

आपके मन में जो बुरा है उसमें अच्छाई की, जो अनित्य है उसमें स्थायित्व की और जो हानिकारक है उसमें लाभ की धारणा है। आप इसे क्यों नहीं समझते?

संवेष्ट्यमानं बहुभिर्मोहतन्तुभिरात्मजैः कोशकारवदात्मानं वेष्टयन्नावबुध्यसे

Being bound by many threads of delusion, by your own sons, You are like a weaver, binding yourself, but you do not understand.

अपने ही पुत्रों द्वारा मोह के अनेक धागों से बंधे होने के कारण, आप एक जुलाहे की तरह अपने आप को बांध रहे हैं, लेकिन आप नहीं समझते हैं।

अलं परिग्रहेणेह दोषवान्हि परिग्रहः कृमिर्हि कोशकारस्तु बध्यते स्वपरिग्रहात्

Enough of this grasping, for grasping is a fault. For the worm that makes a cocoon is bound by its own grasping.

यह पकड़ना बहुत हो गया, क्योंकि पकड़ना एक दोष है। क्योंकि कोकून बनाने वाला कीड़ा अपनी ही पकड़ से बंधा होता है।

जो लोग पुत्र, पत्नी और परिवार से मोह रखते हैं वे दलदल या समुद्र में बूढ़े हाथियों की तरह डूब जाते हैं।

महाजालसमाकृष्टान्स्थले मत्स्यानिवोद्धृतान् स्नेहजालसमाकृष्टान्पश्य जन्तून्सुदुःखितान्

Like fish drawn out of the water by a large net, See the beings drawn by the net of affection, so very miserable.

जैसे बड़े जाल से खींची गई मछली जल से बाहर आ जाती है, वैसे ही स्नेह के जाल से खींचे गए प्राणियों को देखो, वे अत्यंत दुःखी होते हैं।

कुटुम्बं पुत्रदारं च शरीरं द्रव्यसंचयाः पारक्यमध्रुवं सर्वं किं स्वं सुकृतदुष्कृतम्

Family, wife, children, body, and accumulations of wealth are all impermanent and belong to others. What is one's own? Only good and bad deeds.

परिवार, पत्नी, बच्चे, शरीर और धन का संचय सभी अनित्य हैं और दूसरों के हैं। अपना क्या है? केवल अच्छे और बुरे कर्म।

यदा सर्वं परित्यज्य गन्तव्यमवशेन ते अनर्थे किं प्रसक्तस्त्वं स्वमर्थं नानुतिष्ठसि

When you must go, helpless, having abandoned everything, Why are you attached to what is useless? Why do you not attend to your own welfare?

जब तुम्हें जाना ही है, असहाय होकर, सब कुछ त्यागकर, तो जो बेकार है उससे तुम क्यों जुड़े हुए हो? आप अपने कल्याण का ध्यान क्यों नहीं रखते?

Without a guide, without provisions, without a resting place, without a support, How will you go alone on this path through the wilderness of darkness?

बिना मार्गदर्शक के, बिना रसद के, बिना आरामगाह के, बिना सहारे के, तुम अंधकार के जंगल में इस पथ पर अकेले कैसे चलोगे?

न हि त्वा प्रस्थितं कश्चित्पृष्ठतोऽनुगमिष्यति सुकृतं दुष्कृतं च त्वा यास्यन्तमनुयास्यति

No one will follow you when you depart. Your good and bad deeds will follow you.

जब आप प्रस्थान करेंगे तो कोई भी आपका पीछा नहीं करेगा। आपके अच्छे और बुरे कर्म आपका पीछा करेंगे।

विद्या कर्म च शौर्यं च ज्ञानं च बहुविस्तरम् अर्थार्थमनुसार्यन्ते सिद्धार्थस्तु विमुच्यते

Knowledge, action, heroism, and extensive knowledge are pursued for the sake of wealth. But one who has attained his goal is liberated.

ज्ञान, कर्म, वीरता और व्यापक ज्ञान का अनुसरण धन की खातिर किया जाता है। लेकिन जिसने अपना लक्ष्य प्राप्त कर लिया वह मुक्त हो गया।

निबन्धनी रज्जुरेषा या ग्रामे वसतो रतिः छित्त्वैनां सुकृतो यान्ति नैनां छिन्दन्ति दुष्कृतः

This is the binding rope of those who live in the village. Those who do good deeds cut it, but those who do evil deeds do not.

यह गांव में रहने वालों की बंधन रस्सी है। जो अच्छे कर्म करते हैं वे इसे काटते हैं, परन्तु जो बुरे कर्म करते हैं वे नहीं काटते।

रूपकूलां मनःस्रोतां स्पर्शद्वीपां रसावहाम् गन्धपङ्कां शब्दजलां स्वर्गमार्गदुरावहाम्

The river of the mind, with the current of form, the island of touch, the flowing of taste, The mud of smell, the water of sound, the difficult path to heaven,

मन की नदी, रूप की धारा, स्पर्श का द्वीप, स्वाद का प्रवाह, गंध की कीचड़, ध्वनि का जल, स्वर्ग का कठिन मार्ग,

क्षमारित्रां सत्यमयीं धर्मस्थैर्यवटाकराम् त्यागवाताध्वगां शीघ्रां बुद्धिनावा नदीं तरेत्

The boat of wisdom is the river of patience, the boatman is truth, the boat is the tree of the stability of virtue, The wind of renunciation is the boatman, the boat is the river of speed, one should cross the river of the boat of wisdom.

ज्ञान की नाव धैर्य की नदी है, नाविक सत्य है, नाव सदाचार की स्थिरता का वृक्ष है, त्याग की हवा नाविक है, नाव गति की नदी है, ज्ञान की नाव से नदी को पार करना चाहिए।

त्यज धर्ममधर्मं च उभे सत्यानृते त्यज उभे सत्यानृते त्यक्त्वा येन त्यजसि तं त्यज

Abandon both dharma and adharma, both truth and falsehood. Having abandoned both truth and falsehood, abandon that by which you abandon.

धर्म और अधर्म, सत्य और असत्य दोनों का त्याग करो। सत्य और असत्य दोनों को त्यागकर, जिसका तुम त्याग करते हो, उसका भी त्याग करो।

त्यज धर्ममसंकल्पादधर्मं चाप्यहिंसया उभे सत्यानृते बुद्ध्या बुद्धिं परमनिश्चयात्

Abandon dharma by being free from desire, and also non-dharma by non-violence. Abandon both truth and falsehood by wisdom, and wisdom by supreme certainty.

कामना से मुक्त होकर धर्म का और अहिंसा से अधर्म का भी त्याग करो। सत्य और असत्य दोनों को बुद्धि से और बुद्धि को परम निश्चितता से त्याग दो।

अस्थिस्थूणं स्नायुयुतं मांसशोणितलेपनम् चर्मावनद्धं दुर्गन्धि पूर्णं मूत्रपुरीषयोः

A skeleton with sinews, smeared with flesh and blood, Covered with skin, stinking, full of urine and feces,

नसों वाला एक कंकाल, मांस और खून से सना हुआ, त्वचा से ढका हुआ, बदबूदार, मूत्र और मल से भरा हुआ,

जराशोकसमाविष्टं रोगायतनमातुरम् रजस्वलमनित्यं च भूतावासं समुत्सृज

Afflicted by old age and sorrow, a dwelling place for disease, sick, Impure, impermanent, and a dwelling place for the elements, abandon it.

बुढ़ापे और शोक से पीड़ित, रोगग्रस्त, रोगी, अशुद्ध, अनित्य और तत्वों का निवास स्थान, इसे त्याग दो।

इदं विश्वं जगत्सर्वमजगच्चापि यद्भवेत् महाभूतात्मकं सर्वं महद्यत्परमाणु यत्

This entire universe, all that is and is not, all that is composed of the great elements, all that is great and all that is atomic,

He is united with all the sense-objects and the senses, both manifest and unmanifest. This is the twenty-fifth, consisting of the manifest and the unmanifest.

One who is endowed with all these is called a man. Here, the three goals of life are happiness, suffering, life, and death.

जो इन सब से सम्पन्न है वही मनुष्य कहलाता है। यहां जीवन के तीन लक्ष्य सुख, दुख, जीवन और मृत्यु हैं।

य इदं वेद तत्त्वेन स वेद प्रभवाप्ययौ पाराशर्येह बोद्धव्यं ज्ञानानां यच्च किंचन

He who knows this truly, knows the origin and dissolution. O Parashara, whatever knowledge there is, should be known here.

इन्द्रियैर्गृह्यते यद्यत्तत्तद्व्यक्तमिति स्थितिः अव्यक्तमिति विज्ञेयं लिङ्गग्राह्यमतीन्द्रियम्

Whatever is perceived by the senses is said to be manifest. The unmanifest should be known as the cause, which is imperceptible and beyond the senses.

इन्द्रियों द्वारा जो कुछ भी अनुभव किया जाता है, उसे व्यक्त कहा जाता है। अव्यक्त को ही कारण जानना चाहिए, जो अगोचर और इन्द्रियों से परे है।

इन्द्रियैर्नियतैर्देही धाराभिरिव तर्प्यते लोके विततमात्मानं लोकं चात्मनि पश्यति

The embodied soul is satisfied by the senses, as if by streams of water. He sees the world spread out in himself and himself in the world.

देहधारी आत्मा इंद्रियों से संतुष्ट होती है, मानो जल की धाराओं से। वह संसार को अपने में और स्वयं को संसार में फैला हुआ देखता है।

परावरदृशः शक्तिर्ज्ञानवेलां न पश्यति पश्यतः सर्वभूतानि सर्वावस्थासु सर्वदा

The power of one who sees the supreme and the inferior does not see the time of knowledge. One who sees all beings in all states at all times,

ब्रह्मभूतस्य संयोगो नाशुभेनोपपद्यते ज्ञानेन विविधान्क्लेशानतिवृत्तस्य मोहजान् लोके बुद्धिप्रकाशेन लोकमार्गो न रिष्यते

The union of one who has become Brahman is not possible with the inauspicious. One who has transcended the various afflictions born of delusion by means of knowledge, The path of the world is not lost by the light of wisdom in the world.

जो ब्रह्म हो गया उसका मिलन अशुभ से संभव नहीं है। जिसने ज्ञान के माध्यम से भ्रम से उत्पन्न विभिन्न कष्टों को पार कर लिया है, संसार में ज्ञान के प्रकाश से संसार का मार्ग नहीं भटकता है।

अनादिनिधनं जन्तुमात्मनि स्थितमव्ययम् अकर्तारममूर्तं च भगवानाह तीर्थवित्

The Lord, the knower of the sacred places, has said that the creature is without beginning and end, is established in the Self, is imperishable, is without an agent, and is without form.

पवित्र स्थानों के ज्ञाता भगवान ने कहा है कि जीव आदि और अंत से रहित है, आत्मा में स्थित है, अविनाशी है, कर्ता से रहित है और रूप से रहित है।

यो जन्तुः स्वकृतैस्तैस्तैः कर्मभिर्नित्यदुःखितः स दुःखप्रतिघातार्थं हन्ति जन्तूननेकधा

The creature who is always miserable due to his own actions, in order to avoid suffering, kills many creatures in many ways.

जो प्राणी अपने कर्मों के कारण सदैव दुःखी रहता है, वह दुःख से बचने के लिए अनेक प्रकार से अनेक प्राणियों की हत्या करता है।

ततः कर्म समादत्ते पुनरन्यन्नवं बहु तप्यतेऽथ पुनस्तेन भुक्त्वापथ्यमिवातुरः

Then he undertakes another new and great deed, and is tormented again by it, as if he had eaten bad food when sick.

फिर वह एक और नया और महान कार्य करता है, और उससे उसे फिर पीड़ा होती है, मानो उसने बीमार होने पर ख़राब खाना खा लिया हो।

अजस्रमेव मोहार्तो दुःखेषु सुखसंज्ञितः बध्यते मथ्यते चैव कर्मभिर्मन्थवत्सदा

Constantly afflicted by delusion, he thinks of suffering as happiness. He is bound and churned by his actions, like milk being churned.

वह निरन्तर मोह से पीड़ित होकर दुःख को ही सुख समझता है। वह अपने कर्मों से बंधा हुआ है और दूध के मथने की तरह मथता रहता है।

ततो निवृत्तो बन्धात्स्वात्कर्मणामुदयादिह परिभ्रमति संसारं चक्रवद्बहुवेदनः

Then, having turned away from bondage, he is born here from his own actions. He wanders in the cycle of rebirth, like a wheel, with many experiences.

फिर वह बंधन से विमुख होकर अपने कर्मों से यहां जन्म लेता है। वह पुनर्जन्म के चक्र में एक पहिये की तरह अनेक अनुभवों के साथ घूमता रहता है।

स त्वं निवृत्तबन्धस्तु निवृत्तश्चापि कर्मतः सर्ववित्सर्वजित्सिद्धो भव भावविवर्जितः

But you, having turned away from bondage and having turned away from action, are omniscient, all-conquering, accomplished, and free from all things.

परंतु आप बंधन से विमुख होकर तथा कर्म से विमुख होकर सर्वज्ञ, सर्वविजयी, सिद्ध तथा सभी वस्तुओं से मुक्त हैं।

संयमेन नवं बन्धं निवर्त्य तपसो बलात् संप्राप्ता बहवः सिद्धिमप्यबाधां सुखोदयाम्

By the power of austerity, many have attained the state of Siddhi, which is free from affliction and is the source of happiness, by abandoning the new bondage through restraint.

तपस्या के बल पर अनेकों ने संयम द्वारा नये बंधन का त्याग करके सिद्धि की अवस्था प्राप्त की है, जो क्लेश से मुक्त और सुख का स्रोत है।
