वैशंपायन उवाच ततो रामस्य तत्कर्म श्रुत्वा राजा युधिष्ठिरः विस्मयं परमं गत्वा प्रत्युवाच जनार्दनम्

Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard of Rāma's deeds, King Yudhiṣṭhira was filled with great wonder and replied to Janārdana.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: राम के कार्यों को सुनकर, राजा युधिष्ठिर महान आश्चर्य से भर गए और जनार्दन को उत्तर दिया।

अहो रामस्य वार्ष्णेय शक्रस्येव महात्मनः विक्रमो येन वसुधा क्रोधान्निःक्षत्रिया कृता

"O Vārṣṇeya! The great-souled Rāma is like Śākra. Through his valour and anger, he emptied the earth of kṣatriya-s.

"हे वार्ष्णेय! महान आत्मा वाले राम, शक्र के समान हैं। अपनी वीरता और क्रोध के माध्यम से, उन्होंने पृथ्वी को क्षत्रियों से खाली कर दिया।

गोभिः समुद्रेण तथा गोलाङ्गूलर्क्षवानरैः गुप्ता रामभयोद्विग्नाः क्षत्रियाणां कुलोद्वहाः

The extenders of the kṣatriya lineage were frightened because of Rāma and were protected by cattle, the oceans, golāṅgūla-s, bears and apes.

क्षत्रिय वंश के विस्तारक राम के कारण भयभीत थे और मवेशियों, समुद्रों, गोलंगुलों, भालू और वानरों द्वारा उनकी रक्षा की जाती थी।

अहो धन्यो हि लोकोऽयं सभाग्याश्च नरा भुवि यत्र कर्मेदृशं धर्म्यं द्विजेन कृतमच्युत

O Acyuta! It is amazing. Men on earth are fortunate that such an act of dharma was performed by the brāhmaṇa."

हे अच्युत! यह अद्भुत है. पृथ्वी पर मनुष्य भाग्यशाली हैं कि ब्राह्मण द्वारा ऐसा धर्म कार्य किया गया।"

तथा यान्तौ तदा तात तावच्युतयुधिष्ठिरौ जग्मतुर्यत्र गाङ्गेयः शरतल्पगतः प्रभुः

O son! That is the way Acyuta and Yudhiṣṭhira proceeded together. They went to the spot where the lord Gāṅgeya was lying down on a bed of arrows.

हे वत्स इसी प्रकार अच्युत और युधिष्ठिर एक साथ आगे बढ़े। वे उस स्थान पर गये जहाँ भगवान गांगेय बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे हुए थे।

ततस्ते ददृशुर्भीष्मं शरप्रस्तरशायिनम् स्वरश्मिजालसंवीतं सायंसूर्यमिवानलम्

They saw Bhīṣma lying down on that bed of arrows. He was like the evening sun or the fire, surrounded by a net of his own rays.

उन्होंने भीष्म को बाणों की शय्या पर लेटे हुए देखा। वह शाम के सूरज या आग की तरह था, जो अपनी ही किरणों के जाल से घिरा हुआ था।

उपास्यमानं मुनिभिर्देवैरिव शतक्रतुम् देशे परमधर्मिष्ठे नदीमोघवतीमनु

That spot, on the banks of the river Oghavatī, was extremely auspicious. The sages surrounded and honoured him, like the gods around Śatakratu.

ओघावती नदी के तट पर वह स्थान अत्यंत शुभ था। ऋषियों ने उसे घेर लिया और उसका सम्मान किया, जैसे शतक्रतु के चारों ओर देवताओं ने किया था।

दूरादेव तमालोक्य कृष्णो राजा च धर्मराट् चत्वारः पाण्डवाश्चैव ते च शारद्वतादयः

From a distance, Kṛṣṇā, the king who was Dharmarāja, the four Pāṇḍava-s and Śāradvata and the others saw him.

दूर से, कृष्ण, राजा जो धर्मराज थे, चार पांडवों और शरद्वात और अन्य लोगों ने उन्हें देखा।

अवस्कन्द्याथ वाहेभ्यः संयम्य प्रचलं मनः एकीकृत्येन्द्रियग्राममुपतस्थुर्महामुनीन्

They descended from their vehicles and controlled their agitated minds. They concentrated their senses and approached the great sages.

वे अपने वाहनों से उतरे और अपने उत्तेजित मन को नियंत्रित किया। उन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों को एकाग्र किया और महान ऋषियों के पास पहुंचे।

अभिवाद्य च गोविन्दः सात्यकिस्ते च कौरवाः व्यासादींस्तानृषीन्पश्चाद्गाङ्गेयमुपतस्थिरे

Govinda, Sātyaki and the Kaurava-s greeted Vyāsa and the other riṣi-s and then presented themselves before Gāṅgeya. Gāṅgeya was rich in austerities.

गोविंदा, सात्यकि और कौरवों ने व्यास और अन्य ऋषियों का स्वागत किया और फिर खुद को गांगेय के सामने प्रस्तुत किया। गांगेय तपस्या के धनी थे।

तपोवृद्धिं ततः पृष्ट्वा गाङ्गेयं यदुकौरवाः परिवार्य ततः सर्वे निषेदुः पुरुषर्षभाः

All the Yadu-s and the Kaurava-s, bulls among men, asked about his welfare and then sat down around him.

सभी यदु-कौरव, मनुष्यों ने, उनका कुशलक्षेम पूछा और फिर उनके चारों ओर बैठ गए।

ततो निशम्य गाङ्गेयं शाम्यमानमिवानलम् किंचिद्दीनमना भीष्ममिति होवाच केशवः

Gāṅgeya was fading, like a fire that had been pacified. Somewhat distressed in his mind, Keśava told Bhīṣma,

गांगेय शांत हो चुकी आग की तरह लुप्त हो रही थी। मन में कुछ व्यथित होकर केशव ने भीष्म से कहा,

कच्चिज्ज्ञानानि ते राजन्प्रसन्नानि यथा पुरा कच्चिदव्याकुला चैव बुद्धिस्ते वदतां वर

"O king! I hope your knowledge is as clear at it used to be. O supreme among eloquent ones! I hope anxiety has not affected your intelligence.

"हे राजा! मुझे आशा है कि आपका ज्ञान उतना ही स्पष्ट है जितना पहले हुआ करता था। हे वाक्पटुओं में सर्वोच्च! मुझे आशा है कि चिंता ने आपकी बुद्धि को प्रभावित नहीं किया है।"

शराभिघातदुःखात्ते कच्चिद्गात्रं न दूयते मानसादपि दुःखाद्धि शारीरं बलवत्तरम्

I hope the wounds from these arrows are not causing great pain to your limbs. Mental pain makes the physical one stronger.

मुझे आशा है कि इन बाणों के घावों से आपके अंगों को अधिक पीड़ा नहीं हो रही होगी। मानसिक पीड़ा शारीरिक को मजबूत बनाती है।

वरदानात्पितुः कामं छन्दमृत्युरसि प्रभो शंतनोर्धर्मशीलस्य न त्वेतच्छमकारणम्

O lord! Your father Śāntanu, devoted to dharma, granted you the boon that you could choose when to die. But that does not reduce the pain.

हे भगवान! धर्म के प्रति समर्पित आपके पिता शांतनु ने आपको वरदान दिया था कि आप चुन सकते हैं कि आपको कब मरना है। लेकिन इससे दर्द कम नहीं होता.

सुसूक्ष्मोऽपीह देहे वै शल्यो जनयते रुजम् किं पुनः शरसंघातैश्चितस्य तव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! The slightest of stakes generates pain in the body, not to speak of this storm of arrows.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जरा-सा प्रहार शरीर में वेदना उत्पन्न कर देता है, बाणों के इस तूफ़ान की तो बात ही क्या।

कामं नैतत्तवाख्येयं प्राणिनां प्रभवाप्ययौ भवान्ह्युपदिशेच्छ्रेयो देवानामपि भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! If you so wish, you can instruct the gods on the origins, the prosperity and the destruction of all living beings.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यदि आप चाहें, तो आप देवताओं को सभी जीवित प्राणियों की उत्पत्ति, समृद्धि और विनाश के बारे में निर्देश दे सकते हैं।

यद्धि भूतं भविष्यच्च भवच्च पुरुषर्षभ सर्वं तज्ज्ञानवृद्धस्य तव पाणाविवाहितम्

O bull among men! You are revered for your age and wisdom. It is as if the past, the present and the future are inscribed on the palm of your hand.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! आप अपनी उम्र और बुद्धिमत्ता के लिए पूजनीय हैं। यह ऐसा है मानो अतीत, वर्तमान और भविष्य आपके हाथ की हथेली पर अंकित हो।

संसारश्चैव भूतानां धर्मस्य च फलोदयः विदितस्ते महाप्राज्ञ त्वं हि ब्रह्ममयो निधिः

O immensely wise one! For beings, you know about the fruits of dharma and the cycle of death and rebirth. You are a store that is full of the brāhman.

हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! प्राणियों के लिए, आप धर्म के फल और मृत्यु और पुनर्जन्म के चक्र के बारे में जानते हैं। आप वह भण्डार हैं जो ब्रह्म से भरा हुआ है।

त्वां हि राज्ये स्थितं स्फीते समग्राङ्गमरोगिणम् स्त्रीसहस्रैः परिवृतं पश्यामीहोर्ध्वरेतसम्

You were established in this prosperous kingdom and your limbs were without disease. You were surrounded by thousands of women.

आप इस समृद्ध राज्य में स्थापित थे और आपके अंग रोगमुक्त थे। आप हजारों स्त्रियों से घिरे हुए थे।

ऋते शांतनवाद्भीष्मात्त्रिषु लोकेषु पार्थिव सत्यसंधान्महावीर्याच्छूराद्धर्मैकतत्परात्

However, we have seen you hold up your seed. O king! With the exception of Śāntanu's son, Bhīṣma, there is no one in the three worlds who is as devoted to the truth, as immensely valorous, as brave and as conscious of dharma.

हालाँकि, हमने आपको अपना बीज संभाले हुए देखा है। हे राजा! शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म को छोड़कर, तीनों लोकों में कोई भी ऐसा नहीं है जो सत्य के प्रति इतना समर्पित, इतना वीर, इतना बहादुर और धर्म के प्रति इतना जागरूक हो।

मृत्युमावार्य तरसा शरप्रस्तरशायिनः निसर्गप्रभवं किंचिन्न च तातानुशुश्रुम

O father! You are about to die and we have not heard of anyone else who, lying down on strewn arrows, is so full of natural power.

हे पिता! आप मरने वाले हैं और हमने किसी और के बारे में नहीं सुना है, जो बिखरे हुए तीरों पर लेटा हुआ, प्राकृतिक शक्ति से भरा हुआ हो।

सत्ये तपसि दाने च यज्ञाधिकरणे तथा धनुर्वेदे च वेदे च नित्यं चैवान्ववेक्षणे

In truth, austerities, generosity, performing of sacrifices, dhanurveda, the Veda-s,

वास्तव में, तपस्या, उदारता, यज्ञ करना, धनुर्वेद, वेद-पाठ,

अनृशंसं शुचिं दान्तं सर्वभूतहिते रतम् महारथं त्वत्सदृशं न कंचिदनुशुश्रुम

non-violence, purity, self-control and engagement in the welfare of all beings, we have not heard of any other mahāratha like you.

अहिंसा, पवित्रता, आत्म-नियंत्रण और सभी प्राणियों के कल्याण में संलग्न, हमने आपके जैसा किसी अन्य महारथी के बारे में नहीं सुना है।

त्वं हि देवान्सगन्धर्वान्ससुरासुरराक्षसान् शक्त एकरथेनैव विजेतुं नात्र संशयः

There is no doubt that you are capable of vanquishing the gods, the gāndharva-s, the surā-s, the asurā-s and the rākṣasa-s on a single chariot.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि आप एक ही रथ पर सवार होकर देवताओं, गंधर्वों, सुरों, असुरों और राक्षसों को परास्त करने में सक्षम हैं।

त्वं हि भीष्म महाबाहो वसूनां वासवोपमः नित्यं विप्रैः समाख्यातो नवमोऽनवमो गुणैः

You are the mighty-armed Bhīṣma, like a Vāsava among the Vasu-s. The brāhmana-s always refer to you as the ninth, but you are not the ninth in qualities.

आप वसुओं में वासव के समान महाबाहु भीष्म हैं। ब्राह्मण हमेशा आपको नौवें के रूप में संदर्भित करते हैं, लेकिन आप गुणों में नौवें नहीं हैं।

अहं हि त्वाभिजानामि यस्त्वं पुरुषसत्तम त्रिदशेष्वपि विख्यातः स्वशक्त्या सुमहाबलः

O supreme among men! I know who you are. Because of your own capacity and great strength, you are renowned among the thirty gods.

हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! मुझे पता है आप कौन हैं। आप अपनी क्षमता और महान बल के कारण तीस देवताओं में प्रसिद्ध हैं।

मनुष्येषु मनुष्येन्द्र न दृष्टो न च मे श्रुतः भवतो यो गुणैस्तुल्यः पृथिव्यां पुरुषः क्वचित्

O Indra among men! Among men, there is no man on earth who is your equal in qualities, none that has been seen or heard of.

हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! पृथ्वी पर मनुष्यों में कोई भी ऐसा मनुष्य नहीं है जो गुणों में आपके समान हो, ऐसा कोई भी न तो देखा गया है और न ही सुना गया है।

त्वं हि सर्वैर्गुणै राजन्देवानप्यतिरिच्यसे तपसा हि भवाञ्शक्तः स्रष्टुं लोकांश्चराचरान्

O king! In all the qualities, you surpass even the gods. Through your austerities, you are capable of creating worlds, with mobile and immobile objects.

हे राजा! आप सभी गुणों में देवताओं से भी आगे हैं। अपनी तपस्या के माध्यम से, आप गतिशील और स्थावर वस्तुओं से संसार बनाने में सक्षम हैं।

तदस्य तप्यमानस्य ज्ञातीनां संक्षयेण वै ज्येष्ठस्य पाण्डुपुत्रस्य शोकं भीष्म व्यपानुद

The eldest son of Pāṇḍu is tormented because of the destruction of his kin. O Bhīṣma! Dispel his sorrow.

पाण्डु का ज्येष्ठ पुत्र अपने परिजनों के विनाश से दुःखी है। हे भीष्म! उसका दुःख दूर करो.

ये हि धर्माः समाख्याताश्चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य भारत चातुराश्रम्यसंसृष्टास्ते सर्वे विदितास्तव

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! You know everything about what is said to be the dharma of the four vārṇa-s and the four āśrama-s.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! चार वर्णों और चार आश्रमों का धर्म क्या कहा जाता है, इसके बारे में आप सब कुछ जानते हैं।

चातुर्वेद्ये च ये प्रोक्ताश्चातुर्होत्रे च भारत सांख्ये योगे च नियता ये च धर्माः सनातनाः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! This is said to be the eternal dharma, spoken about in the four Veda-s, followed by the four officiating priests and stated in sāṃkhya yoga.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इसे शाश्वत धर्म कहा जाता है, जिसके बारे में चार वेदों में कहा गया है, जिसका पालन चार कार्यवाहक पुजारियों द्वारा किया गया है और सांख्य योग में कहा गया है।

चातुर्वर्ण्येन यश्चैको धर्मो न स्म विरुध्यते सेव्यमानः स चैवाद्यो गाङ्गेय विदितस्तव

O Gāṅgeya! There is one single dharma followed, and not contravened, by any of the four vārṇa-s and that is also known to you.

हे गांगेय! चारों वर्णों में से किसी एक द्वारा एक ही धर्म का पालन किया जाता है और उसका उल्लंघन नहीं किया जाता है और यह भी आप जानते हैं।

इतिहासपुराणं च कार्त्स्न्येन विदितं तव धर्मशास्त्रं च सकलं नित्यं मनसि ते स्थितम्

You know all the itihāsa and the Pūraṇa-s. All the Dharmaśāstra-s are always established in your mind.

आप सभी इतिहास और पुराणों को जानते हैं। सभी धर्मशास्त्र सदैव आपके मन में स्थापित रहते हैं।

ये च केचन लोकेऽस्मिन्नर्थाः संशयकारकाः तेषां छेत्ता नास्ति लोके त्वदन्यः पुरुषर्षभ

O bull among men! With the exception of you, there is no one else in this world who can dispel any doubt that may arise about their meanings.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! आपके अलावा, इस दुनिया में कोई भी ऐसा नहीं है जो उनके अर्थों के बारे में उत्पन्न होने वाले किसी भी संदेह को दूर कर सके।

स पाण्डवेयस्य मनःसमुत्थितं; नरेन्द्र शोकं व्यपकर्ष मेधया भवद्विधा ह्युत्तमबुद्धिविस्तरा; विमुह्यमानस्य जनस्य शान्तये

O Indra among men! Using your intelligence, dispel the sorrow that has arisen in Pāṇḍaveya's mind. You possess many kinds of extensive intelligence and you should assure the people who are confused."

हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! तुम अपनी बुद्धि का प्रयोग करके पाण्डवय के मन में उत्पन्न हुए दुःख को दूर करो। आपके पास अनेक प्रकार की व्यापक बुद्धि है और आपको भ्रमित लोगों को आश्वस्त करना चाहिए।”
