भीष्म उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् निदर्शनकरं लोके सज्जनाचरितं सदा

Bhīṣma said, "In this connection, an ancient history is recounted. Among people, this has always been cited as an instance of good conduct and this illustrates the point.

भीष्म ने कहा, "इस संबंध में, एक प्राचीन इतिहास का वर्णन किया गया है। लोगों के बीच, इसे हमेशा अच्छे आचरण के उदाहरण के रूप में उद्धृत किया गया है और यह बात को स्पष्ट करता है।

अस्यैवार्थस्य सदृशं यच्छ्रुतं मे तपोवने जामदग्न्यस्य रामस्य यदुक्तमृषिसत्तमैः

I heard it in the hermitage of Rāma, Jāmadagni's son, when it was recounted by that supreme among riṣi-s.

मैंने इसे जमदग्नि के पुत्र राम के आश्रम में सुना था, जब ऋषियों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ ने इसका वर्णन किया था।

वने महति कस्मिंश्चिदमनुष्यनिषेविते ऋषिर्मूलफलाहारो नियतो नियतेन्द्रियः

There was a great forest, inhabited by no other men. There was only a self-controlled riṣi who had restrained his senses and subsisted on roots and fruit.

वहाँ एक महान जंगल था, जिसमें कोई अन्य व्यक्ति नहीं रहता था। केवल एक आत्म-नियंत्रित ऋषि ही थे जिन्होंने अपनी इंद्रियों पर संयम रखा था और जड़ों और फलों पर निर्वाह किया था।

दीक्षादमपरः शान्तः स्वाध्यायपरमः शुचिः उपवासविशुद्धात्मा सततं सत्पथे स्थितः

He had initiated himself into the task of supreme control. He was tranquil, pure and devoted to great studies.

उन्होंने खुद को सर्वोच्च नियंत्रण के कार्य में शामिल कर लिया था। वह शांत, पवित्र और महान अध्ययन के प्रति समर्पित थे।

तस्य संदृश्य सद्भावमुपविष्टस्य धीमतः सर्वसत्त्वाः समीपस्था भवन्ति वनचारिणः

He had cleansed himself through fasting and was always established in the path of the virtuous. The intelligent and righteous one was seated there, looking upon all beings as equal.

उन्होंने उपवास के माध्यम से खुद को शुद्ध कर लिया था और हमेशा नेक रास्ते पर स्थापित थे। वह बुद्धिमान और धर्मात्मा वहाँ बैठा था और सभी प्राणियों को समान दृष्टि से देख रहा था।

सिंहव्याघ्राः सशरभा मत्ताश्चैव महागजाः द्वीपिनः खड्गभल्लूका ये चान्ये भीमदर्शनाः

All the residents of the forest approached him—lions, tigers, śarabha-s, large and crazy elephants, leopards, rhinos, bears and others that were terrible to behold.

जंगल के सभी निवासी उसके पास आये - शेर, बाघ, शरभ, बड़े और पागल हाथी, तेंदुए, गैंडे, भालू और अन्य जो देखने में भयानक थे।

ते सुखप्रश्नदाः सर्वे भवन्ति क्षतजाशनाः तस्यर्षेः शिष्यवच्चैव न्यग्भूताः प्रियकारिणः

All these predatory beasts would ask him about his welfare. They were like the riṣi's disciples and did what was agreeable to him.

ये सभी हिंसक जानवर उससे उसका हाल-चाल पूछते। वे ऋषि के शिष्यों की तरह थे और वही करते थे जो उन्हें मंजूर था।

दत्त्वा च ते सुखप्रश्नं सर्वे यान्ति यथागतम् ग्राम्यस्त्वेकः पशुस्तत्र नाजहाच्छ्वा महामुनिम्

All of them would ask about his welfare and then depart. But there was a village animal that would never leave the great sage and this was a dog.

वे सभी उनका कुशलक्षेम पूछते और फिर चले जाते। लेकिन एक गाँव का जानवर था जो कभी भी महान ऋषि को नहीं छोड़ता था और यह एक कुत्ता था।

भक्तोऽनुरक्तः सततमुपवासकृशोऽबलः फलमूलोत्कराहारः शान्तः शिष्टाकृतिर्यथा

It was faithfully devoted to him and was weak and thin because of the constant fasting. It ate fruits and roots, was calm and acted in virtuous ways.

यह उसके प्रति निष्ठापूर्वक समर्पित था और लगातार उपवास के कारण कमजोर और पतला हो गया था। यह फल और मूल खाता था, शांत रहता था और सदाचारी आचरण करता था।

तस्यर्षेरुपविष्टस्य पादमूले महामुनेः मनुष्यवद्गतो भावः स्नेहबद्धोऽभवद्भृशम्

When the riṣi was seated, it would be near the great sage's feet. It was severely bound to him by ties of affection and its behaviour was like that of a human.

जब ऋषि बैठते थे, तो यह महान ऋषि के पैरों के पास होता था। वह उससे स्नेह के बंधन में बुरी तरह बंधा हुआ था और उसका व्यवहार मनुष्य के समान था।

ततोऽभ्ययान्महावीर्यो द्वीपी क्षतजभोजनः श्वार्थमत्यन्तसंदुष्टः क्रूरः काल इवान्तकः

Once, an immensely valorous and carnivorous leopard arrived there. It was cruel, like Death, and the wicked one came there for the sake of the dog.

एक बार वहाँ एक अत्यंत वीर और मांसाहारी तेंदुआ आ पहुँचा। वह मृत्यु के समान क्रूर था, और वह दुष्ट कुत्ते की खातिर वहाँ आया था।

लेलिह्यमानस्तृषितः पुच्छास्फोटनतत्परः व्यादितास्यः क्षुधाभग्नः प्रार्थयानस्तदामिषम्

It was thirsty and licked its lips. It lashed its tail around. Since it was hungry, it was in search of some flesh and its mouth gaped.

वह प्यासा था और अपने होंठ चाट रहा था। उसने अपनी पूँछ को इधर-उधर घुमाया। चूँकि वह भूखा था, इसलिए वह कुछ मांस की तलाश में था और उसका मुँह फटा हुआ था।

तं दृष्ट्वा क्रूरमायान्तं जीवितार्थी नराधिप प्रोवाच श्वा मुनिं तत्र यत्तच्छृणु महामते

O lord of men! O immensely intelligent one! Listen. On seeing that cruel one advance, to save its life, the dog went to the sage and said,

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! सुनना। उस क्रूर को आगे बढ़ता देख कुत्ता अपनी जान बचाने के लिए ऋषि के पास गया और बोला.

श्वशत्रुर्भगवन्नत्र द्वीपी मां हन्तुमिच्छति त्वत्प्रसादाद्भयं न स्यात्तस्मान्मम महामुने

"O illustrious one! A leopard, the enemy of dogs, wishes to kill me. O great sage! Through your favours, ensure that I face no fear from it."

"हे महामहिम! कुत्तों का शत्रु तेंदुआ मुझे मारना चाहता है। हे महान ऋषि! अपनी कृपा से सुनिश्चित करें कि मुझे उससे कोई भय न हो।"

मुनिरुवाच न भयं द्वीपिनः कार्यं मृत्युतस्ते कथंचन एष श्वरूपरहितो द्वीपी भवसि पुत्रक

The sage replied, "O son! Do not be frightened. You will never face death from a leopard. You will give up your form of a dog and become a leopard."

ऋषि ने उत्तर दिया, "हे पुत्र! डरो मत। तुम्हें कभी भी तेंदुए से मृत्यु का सामना नहीं करना पड़ेगा। तुम कुत्ते का रूप त्याग कर तेंदुआ बन जाओगे।"

भीष्म उवाच ततः श्वा द्वीपितां नीतो जाम्बूनदनिभाकृतिः चित्राङ्गो विस्फुरन्हृष्टो वने वसति निर्भयः

Bhīṣma said: The dog became a leopard and its complexion became golden. Its limbs were spotted and its teeth were large. It dwelt fearlessly in the forest.

भीष्म ने कहा: कुत्ता तेंदुआ बन गया और उसका रंग सुनहरा हो गया। उसके अंग धब्बेदार थे और उसके दाँत बड़े थे। वह निर्भय होकर जंगल में रहता था।

ततोऽभ्ययान्महारौद्रो व्यादितास्यः क्षुधान्वितः द्वीपिनं लेलिहद्वक्त्रो व्याघ्रो रुधिरलालसः

However, an extremely terrible tiger arrived there. It was hungry and its mouth gaped open. It desired some blood and approached the leopard, licking the corners of its mouth.

तभी वहां एक अत्यंत भयानक बाघ आ पहुंचा. वह भूखा था और उसका मुँह खुला का खुला रह गया। उसे कुछ खून चाहिए था और वह तेंदुए के पास आया और उसके मुंह के कोनों को चाटने लगा।

व्याघ्रं दृष्ट्वा क्षुधाभग्नं दंष्ट्रिणं वनगोचरम् द्वीपी जीवितरक्षार्थमृषिं शरणमेयिवान्

On seeing the hungry tiger with a gaping mouth arrive in the forest, the leopard wished to save its life and sought refuge with the riṣi.

जंगल में खुले मुंह वाले भूखे बाघ को देखकर, तेंदुए ने अपनी जान बचाने की कामना की और ऋषि की शरण ली।

ततः संवासजं स्नेहमृषिणा कुर्वता सदा स द्वीपी व्याघ्रतां नीतो रिपुभिर्बलवत्तरः ततो दृष्ट्वा स शार्दूलो नाभ्यहंस्तं विशां पते

Since they used to live together, the riṣi acted affectionately towards it, as he had always done. He changed the leopard into a tiger that was stronger than its enemy. O lord of the earth! On seeing this, the tiger no longer attacked it.

चूँकि वे एक साथ रहते थे, ऋषि ने इसके प्रति स्नेहपूर्वक व्यवहार किया, जैसा कि उन्होंने हमेशा किया था। उसने तेंदुए को एक ऐसे बाघ में बदल दिया जो अपने दुश्मन से भी अधिक शक्तिशाली था। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यह देख कर बाघ ने फिर उस पर हमला नहीं किया.

स तु श्वा व्याघ्रतां प्राप्य बलवान्पिशिताशनः न मूलफलभोगेषु स्पृहामप्यकरोत्तदा

Having become a strong tiger that lived on flesh, the dog no longer had any desire to touch and enjoy roots and fruit.

मांस खाकर जीने वाला एक मजबूत बाघ बनने के बाद, कुत्ते को अब जड़ों और फलों को छूने और उनका आनंद लेने की कोई इच्छा नहीं रही।

यथा मृगपतिर्नित्यं प्रकाङ्क्षति वनौकसः तथैव स महाराज व्याघ्रः समभवत्तदा

A lord of deer always desires residents of the forest. O great king! This tiger also acted in this way.

मृगराज सदा वनवासियों को चाहता है। हे महान राजा! इस बाघ ने भी इसी तरह की हरकत की.

व्याघ्रस्तूटजमूलस्थस्तृप्तः सुप्तो हतैर्मृगैः नागश्चागात्तमुद्देशं मत्तो मेघ इवोत्थितः

Once, having killed a deer and satisfied itself on this, the tiger was asleep at the foot of a tree. A crazy elephant, which looked like a newly arisen cloud, arrived there.

एक बार, एक हिरण को मारकर और इस पर संतुष्ट होकर, बाघ एक पेड़ के नीचे सो रहा था। एक पागल हाथी, जो नये उभरे हुए बादल के समान दिखाई देता था, वहाँ आ पहुँचा।

प्रभिन्नकरटः प्रांशुः पद्मी विततमस्तकः सुविषाणो महाकायो मेघगम्भीरनिस्वनः

It was huge and its temples were shattered. It was excellent and possessed a broad head. It had superb tusks and was gigantic in form. Its roar was like the rumbling of the thunder.

वह बहुत बड़ा था और उसके मंदिर टूट गये थे। यह उत्कृष्ट था और इसका सिर चौड़ा था। उसके दाँत शानदार थे और उसका आकार भी विशाल था। उसकी गर्जना वज्र की गड़गड़ाहट के समान थी।

तं दृष्ट्वा कुञ्जरं मत्तमायान्तं मदगर्वितम् व्याघ्रो हस्तिभयात्त्रस्तस्तमृषिं शरणं ययौ

On seeing that mad elephant advance, insolent and crazy, the tiger was terrified of the elephant and sought refuge with the riṣi.

उस पागल हाथी को आगे बढ़ते देख, ढीठ और पागल, बाघ हाथी से डर गया और उसने ऋषि की शरण ली।

ततोऽनयत्कुञ्जरतां तं व्याघ्रमृषिसत्तमः महामेघोपमं दृष्ट्वा तं स भीतोऽभवद्गजः

The supreme among riṣi-s turned the tiger into an elephant. On seeing its form, which was like that of a giant cloud, the other elephant was frightened.

ऋषियों में सर्वोच्च ने बाघ को हाथी में बदल दिया। विशाल बादल के समान उसका रूप देखकर दूसरा हाथी भयभीत हो गया।

ततः कमलषण्डानि शल्लकीगहनानि च व्यचरत्स मुदा युक्तः पद्मरेणुविभूषितः

It was delighted and roamed around amidst clusters of lotuses and frankincense thickets, adorning its body with pollen from lotuses.

वह प्रसन्न थी और कमल के गुच्छों और लोबान की झाड़ियों के बीच घूमती थी, अपने शरीर को कमल के पराग से सजाती थी।

कदाचिद्रममाणस्य हस्तिनः सुमुखं तदा ऋषेस्तस्योटजस्थस्य कालोऽगच्छन्निशानिशम्

The handsome elephant roamed around near the riṣi's cottage and time passed. After several nights, a maned lion arrived at that spot and its mane was tawny.

सुंदर हाथी ऋषि की कुटिया के पास घूमता रहा और समय बीतता गया। कई रातों के बाद, एक नर शेर उस स्थान पर आया और उसका बाल भूरे रंग का था।

अथाजगाम तं देशं केसरी केसरारुणः गिरिकन्दरजो भीमः सिंहो नागकुलान्तकः

The lion was terrible and hailed from mountainous regions, having slain families of elephants.

शेर भयानक था और पहाड़ी क्षेत्रों का रहने वाला था, उसने हाथियों के परिवारों को मार डाला था।

तं दृष्ट्वा सिंहमायान्तं नागः सिंहभयाकुलः ऋषिं शरणमापेदे वेपमानो भयातुरः

On seeing the lion advance, the elephant was terrified on account of the lion. It was afflicted and, trembling out of fear, sought refuge with the riṣi.

शेर को आगे बढ़ता देख हाथी शेर के कारण भयभीत हो गया। यह पीड़ित था और डर से कांपते हुए ऋषि की शरण में गया।

ततः स सिंहतां नीतो नागेन्द्रो मुनिना तदा वन्यं नागणयत्सिंहं तुल्यजातिसमन्वयात्

The sage then turned that king of elephants into a lion and the wild lion ignored the elephant, taking it to belong to the same species.

तब ऋषि ने हाथियों के उस राजा को शेर में बदल दिया और जंगली शेर ने हाथी को उसी प्रजाति का समझकर नजरअंदाज कर दिया।

दृष्ट्वा च सोऽनशत्सिंहो वन्यो भीसन्नवाग्बलः स चाश्रमेऽवसत्सिंहस्तस्मिन्नेव वने सुखी

On seeing a more powerful one, the wild lion was terrified and disappeared. The lion dwelt happily in that forest hermitage.

अपने से अधिक शक्तिशाली शेर को देखकर जंगली शेर भयभीत हो गया और गायब हो गया। सिंह उस वन आश्रम में सुखपूर्वक रहने लगा।

न त्वन्ये क्षुद्रपशवस्तपोवननिवासिनः व्यदृश्यन्त भयत्रस्ता जीविताकाङ्क्षिणः सदा

However, the other smaller animals that dwelt in the hermitage were terrified to be seen there and were always frightened for their lives.

हालाँकि, आश्रम में रहने वाले अन्य छोटे जानवर वहां देखकर भयभीत हो जाते थे और हमेशा अपने जीवन को लेकर भयभीत रहते थे।

कदाचित्कालयोगेन सर्वप्राणिविहिंसकः बलवान्क्षतजाहारो नानासत्त्वभयंकरः

But it so happened with the progress of time that a powerful, carnivorous creature sought to kill all beings. All beings found it to be fearful.

लेकिन समय की प्रगति के साथ ऐसा हुआ कि एक शक्तिशाली, मांसाहारी प्राणी ने सभी प्राणियों को मारने की कोशिश की। सभी प्राणियों को यह भयावह लगा।

अष्टपादूर्ध्वचरणः शरभो वनगोचरः तं सिंहं हन्तुमागच्छन्मुनेस्तस्य निवेशनम्

It dwelt in the forest and it possessed eight legs that extended upwards. That śarabha arrived in the sage's residence, desiring to kill the lion.

यह जंगल में रहता था और इसके आठ पैर थे जो ऊपर की ओर फैले हुए थे। वह शरभ सिंह को मारने की इच्छा से ऋषि के निवास पर पहुंचा।

तं मुनिः शरभं चक्रे बलोत्कटमरिंदम ततः स शरभो वन्यो मुनेः शरभमग्रतः दृष्ट्वा बलिनमत्युग्रं द्रुतं संप्राद्रवद्भयात्

O scorcher of enemies! The sage turned it into an extremely strong śarabha. The wild śarabha saw the sage's śarabha in front of him and on seeing that it was strong and fierce, quickly fled out of fear.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! ऋषि ने उसे अत्यंत बलशाली शरभ में बदल दिया। जंगली शरभ ने ऋषि के शरभ को अपने सामने देखा और यह देखकर कि वह मजबूत और भयंकर था, डर के मारे तुरंत भाग गया।

स एवं शरभस्थाने न्यस्तो वै मुनिना तदा मुनेः पार्श्वगतो नित्यं शारभ्यं सुखमाप्तवान्

Once the sage had reduced it to the state of a śarabha, the śarabha was full of happiness and always dwelt by the side of the sage.

एक बार जब ऋषि ने इसे शरभ की स्थिति में ला दिया, तो शरभ खुशी से भर गया और हमेशा ऋषि के पास रहता था।

ततः शरभसंत्रस्ताः सर्वे मृगगणा वनात् दिशः संप्राद्रवन्राजन्भयाज्जीवितकाङ्क्षिणः

The large numbers of animals in the forest were all terrified of the śarabha. O king! Desiring to save their lives, they fled in all the directions.

जंगल में बड़ी संख्या में जानवर शरभ से भयभीत थे। हे राजा! वे अपनी जान बचाने की इच्छा से सभी दिशाओं में भाग गये।

शरभोऽप्यतिसंदुष्टो नित्यं प्राणिवधे रतः फलमूलाशनं शान्तं नैच्छत्स पिशिताशनः

Always engaged in the killing of animals, the śarabha was extremely satifisied. It was a flesh-eater and no longer desired to be peaceful and subsist on fruits and roots.

सदैव पशुओं की हत्या में लगे रहने वाले शरभ अत्यंत संतुष्ट रहते थे। वह मांस खाने वाला था और अब शांत रहकर फल-मूल पर निर्वाह नहीं करना चाहता था।

ततो रुधिरतर्षेण बलिना शरभोऽन्वितः इयेष तं मुनिं हन्तुमकृतज्ञः श्वयोनिजः

Desiring blood, the powerful śarabha, born in the womb of a dog, was ungrateful and wished to kill the sage.

रक्त की इच्छा से कुत्ते के गर्भ से जन्म लेने वाला शक्तिशाली शरभ कृतघ्न था और ऋषि को मार डालना चाहता था।

ततस्तेन तपःशक्त्या विदितो ज्ञानचक्षुषा विज्ञाय च महाप्राज्ञो मुनिः श्वानं तमुक्तवान्

Through the strength of his austerities and the sight of knowledge, the immensely wise sage divined this and spoke to the dog.

अत्यंत बुद्धिमान ऋषि ने अपनी तपस्या और ज्ञानदृष्टि के बल से यह बात जान ली और कुत्ते से बात की।

श्वा त्वं द्वीपित्वमापन्नो द्वीपी व्याघ्रत्वमागतः व्याघ्रो नागो मदपटुर्नागः सिंहत्वमाप्तवान्

"You became a leopard from a dog and from a leopard you became a tiger. From a tiger you became an elephant with musth and from an elephant you became a lion.

"तुम कुत्ते से तेंदुआ बन गए और तेंदुए से बाघ बन गए। बाघ से तुम मूंछ वाला हाथी बन गए और हाथी से शेर बन गए।"

सिंहोऽतिबलसंयुक्तो भूयः शरभतां गतः मया स्नेहपरीतेन न विमृष्टः कुलान्वयः

From an immensely strong lion you again became a śarabha. Because I was overcome with affection, I had forgotten about your lineage.

तुम अत्यंत बलशाली सिंह से पुनः शरभ बन गये। मैं स्नेह के वशीभूत होकर आपके वंश को भूल गया था।

यस्मादेवमपापं मां पाप हिंसितुमिच्छसि तस्मात्स्वयोनिमापन्नः श्वैव त्वं हि भविष्यसि

O wicked one! You desire to act violently towards me, though I have caused you no harm. Therefore, you will go back to your own species. Become a dog."

हे दुष्ट! आप मेरे प्रति हिंसात्मक व्यवहार करना चाहते हैं, यद्यपि मैंने आपको कोई हानि नहीं पहुँचाई है। अत: तुम अपनी ही प्रजाति में वापस चले जाओगे। कुत्ता बन जाओ।”

ततो मुनिजनद्वेषाद्दुष्टात्मा श्वाकृतोऽबुधः ऋषिणा शरभः शप्तः स्वं रूपं पुनराप्तवान्

The stupid one, evil in his soul, became a dog because it hated the sage and people. Because of the riṣi's curse, the śarabha again assumed the form of a dog.

वह मूर्ख, जिसकी आत्मा दुष्ट थी, कुत्ता बन गया क्योंकि वह ऋषियों और लोगों से नफरत करता था। ऋषि के श्राप के कारण शरभ ने फिर से कुत्ते का रूप धारण कर लिया।
