वैशंपायन उवाच श्रुत्वा तु वचनं भीष्मो वासुदेवस्य धीमतः किंचिदुन्नाम्य वदनं प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत्

Vaiśampāyana said: Hearing the words of the intelligent Vāsudeva, Bhīṣma joined his hands in salutation and raising his head a bit, spoke the following words.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: बुद्धिमान वासुदेव के वचन सुनकर भीष्म ने नमस्कार करते हुए हाथ जोड़े और अपना सिर थोड़ा ऊपर उठाकर निम्नलिखित शब्द बोले।

नमस्ते भगवन्विष्णो लोकानां निधनोद्भव त्वं हि कर्ता हृषीकेश संहर्ता चापराजितः

"O illustrious Viṣṇu! I bow down before you. You are the origin of the worlds. O Hṛṣīkeśa! You are the unvanquished creator and destroyer.

"हे यशस्वी विष्णु! मैं आपके सामने झुकता हूं। आप संसार के मूल हैं। हे हृषिकेश! आप अजेय निर्माता और संहारक हैं।

विश्वकर्मन्नमस्तेऽस्तु विश्वात्मन्विश्वसंभव अपवर्गोऽसि भूतानां पञ्चानां परतः स्थितः

I bow down before the one who is the doer in the universe, who is the soul of the universe and who is the creator of the universe. You are the objective and you are beyond the five elements.

जो ब्रह्मांड में कर्ता है, जो ब्रह्मांड की आत्मा है और जो ब्रह्मांड का निर्माता है, मैं उसके सामने झुकता हूं। आप ही उद्देश्य हैं और आप पाँच तत्वों से परे हैं।

नमस्ते त्रिषु लोकेषु नमस्ते परतस्त्रिषु योगेश्वर नमस्तेऽस्तु त्वं हि सर्वपरायणम्

I bow down before the three worlds. I bow down before the one who is beyond the three worlds. I bow down before the one who is the lord of yoga. You are the final refuge of everything.

मैं तीनों लोकों को प्रणाम करता हूँ। जो तीन लोकों से परे है, मैं उसके सामने झुकता हूं। जो योग का स्वामी है, मैं उसके सामने झुकता हूं। आप हर चीज़ का अंतिम आश्रय हैं।

मत्संश्रितं यदात्थ त्वं वचः पुरुषसत्तम तेन पश्यामि ते दिव्यान्भावान्हि त्रिषु वर्त्मसु

O Puruṣottama! I have sought refuge in your words and am able to see your divine form in the three paths.

हे पुरूषोत्तम! मैं आपके वचनों की शरण में आया हूं और तीनों मार्गों से आपके दिव्य स्वरूप का दर्शन कर पा रहा हूं।

तच्च पश्यामि तत्त्वेन यत्ते रूपं सनातनम् सप्त मार्गा निरुद्धास्ते वायोरमिततेजसः

I can also see your true and eternal form. Your infinite energy bears up the wind along seven paths.

मैं भी आपके सत्य एवं शाश्वत स्वरूप को देख सकता हूँ। आपकी अनंत ऊर्जा सात रास्तों पर हवा को सहन करती है।

दिवं ते शिरसा व्याप्तं पद्भ्यां देवी वसुंधरा दिशो भुजौ रविश्चक्षुर्वीर्ये शक्रः प्रतिष्ठितः

Your head extends up to the firmament and your feet are on the goddess earth. The directions are your arms. Your eyes are the sun and Śākra is established in your valour.

आपका सिर आकाश तक फैला हुआ है और आपके पैर देवी पृथ्वी पर हैं। दिशाएँ आपकी भुजाएँ हैं। आपकी आंखें सूर्य हैं और चक्र आपकी वीरता में स्थापित है।

अतसीपुष्पसंकाशं पीतवाससमच्युतम् वपुर्ह्यनुमिमीमस्ते मेघस्येव सविद्युतः

In our mind's eye, we see your undecaying form. It has the complexion of the atasi flower. It is attired in yellow garments. It is like a cloud tinged with lightning.

हम अपने मन की आंखों में आपका अक्षय स्वरूप देखते हैं। इसका रंग अतसी फूल जैसा होता है। इसे पीले वस्त्र पहनाए गए हैं। यह बिजली से चमकते हुए बादल के समान है।

त्वत्प्रपन्नाय भक्ताय गतिमिष्टां जिगीषवे यच्छ्रेयः पुण्डरीकाक्ष तद्ध्यायस्व सुरोत्तम

With a desire to attain the best objective, I have faithfully sought refuge with you. O Puṇḍarīkākṣa! O supreme among gods! Think of my welfare."

सर्वोत्तम उद्देश्य की प्राप्ति की इच्छा से मैंने निष्ठापूर्वक आपकी शरण ली है। हे पुण्डरीकाक्ष! हे देवताओं में श्रेष्ठ! मेरे कल्याण के बारे में सोचो।”

वासुदेव उवाच यतः खलु परा भक्तिर्मयि ते पुरुषर्षभ ततो वपुर्मया दिव्यं तव राजन्प्रदर्शितम्

Vāsudeva replied, "O bull among men! O king! Since you have supreme devotion in me, I have shown you my divine form.

वासुदेव ने उत्तर दिया, "हे नरश्रेष्ठ! हे राजा! चूँकि आपकी मुझमें परम भक्ति है, इसलिए मैंने आपको अपना दिव्य रूप दिखाया है।"

न ह्यभक्ताय राजेन्द्र भक्तायानृजवे न च दर्शयाम्यहमात्मानं न चादान्ताय भारत

O Indra among kings! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I do not show this self to one without devotion, one with false devotion, or one without self-control.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैं इस आत्म को बिना भक्ति वाले, झूठी भक्ति वाले, या आत्म-नियंत्रण के बिना किसी को नहीं दिखाता।

भवांस्तु मम भक्तश्च नित्यं चार्जवमास्थितः दमे तपसि सत्ये च दाने च निरतः शुचिः

You have always been my devotee and you have always been devoted to the truth and have resorted to control, austerities, truth, generosity and attachment to purity.

तुम सदैव मेरे भक्त रहे हो और सदैव सत्य के प्रति समर्पित रहे हो और संयम, तपस्या, सत्य, उदारता और पवित्रता के प्रति लगाव का सहारा लिया हो।

अर्हस्त्वं भीष्म मां द्रष्टुं तपसा स्वेन पार्थिव तव ह्युपस्थिता लोका येभ्यो नावर्तते पुनः

O Bhīṣma! O king! It is because of your own austerities that you have been able to see me. The worlds from which there is no return are there for you.

हे भीष्म! हे राजा! यह आपकी ही तपस्या का परिणाम है कि आप मुझे देख पाये हैं। जिन लोकों से वापसी नहीं होती, वे तुम्हारे लिए हैं।

पञ्चाशतं षट्च कुरुप्रवीर; शेषं दिनानां तव जीवितस्य ततः शुभैः कर्मफलोदयैस्त्वं; समेष्यसे भीष्म विमुच्य देहम्

O foremost among the Kuru lineage! Fiftysix days still remain in your life. O Bhīṣma! After that, you will cast aside your body and obtain the auspicious fruits of your deeds.

हे कुरु वंश में अग्रणी! आपके जीवन में अभी भी छप्पन दिन शेष हैं। हे भीष्म! उसके बाद तुम अपने शरीर को त्याग दोगे और अपने कर्मों का शुभ फल प्राप्त करोगे।

एते हि देवा वसवो विमाना;न्यास्थाय सर्वे ज्वलिताग्निकल्पाः अन्तर्हितास्त्वां प्रतिपालयन्ति; काष्ठां प्रपद्यन्तमुदक्पतंगम्

These gods, the Vasu-s, are astride their celestial vehicles and all of them are like blazing fires. Though they are invisible, they are protecting you until it is the northern solstice.

ये देवता, वसु, अपने दिव्य वाहनों पर सवार हैं और वे सभी धधकती हुई आग के समान हैं। यद्यपि वे अदृश्य हैं, वे उत्तरी संक्रांति होने तक आपकी रक्षा कर रहे हैं।

व्यावृत्तमात्रे भगवत्युदीचीं; सूर्ये दिशं कालवशात्प्रपन्ने गन्तासि लोकान्पुरुषप्रवीर; नावर्तते यानुपलभ्य विद्वान्

O illustrious one! O foremost among men! As soon as the sun turns in the northward direction with the progress of time, you will go to the worlds obtained by those with knowledge, and from where there is no return.

हे महामहिम! हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! समय की प्रगति के साथ जैसे ही सूर्य उत्तर दिशा की ओर मुड़ेगा, तुम ज्ञानियों द्वारा प्राप्त लोकों में चले जाओगे, और जहाँ से लौटना संभव नहीं है।

अमुं च लोकं त्वयि भीष्म याते; ज्ञानानि नङ्क्ष्यन्त्यखिलेन वीर अतः स्म सर्वे त्वयि संनिकर्षं; समागता धर्मविवेचनाय

O Bhīṣma! O brave one! When you go to that world, all the knowledge you possess will be destroyed. That is the reason all of these have assembled before you, for an analysis of dharma.

हे भीष्म! हे वीर! जब तुम उस लोक में जाओगे तो तुम्हारा सारा ज्ञान नष्ट हो जायेगा। यही कारण है कि ये सभी धर्म के विश्लेषण के लिए आपके समक्ष एकत्रित हुए हैं।

तज्ज्ञातिशोकोपहतश्रुताय; सत्याभिसंधाय युधिष्ठिराय प्रब्रूहि धर्मार्थसमाधियुक्त;मर्थ्यं वचोऽस्यापनुदास्य शोकम्

Yudhiṣṭhira's knowledge has been affected by sorrow over his kin, though he is firmly based on truth. Tell him about the union of dharma and artha. Speak meaningful words that will dispel his sorrow."

अपने परिजनों के दुःख से युधिष्ठिर का ज्ञान प्रभावित हुआ है, यद्यपि वे दृढ़तापूर्वक सत्य पर आधारित हैं। उसे धर्म और अर्थ के मिलन के बारे में बताएं। सार्थक शब्द बोलें जिससे उसका दुःख दूर हो जाए।”
