भीष्म उवाच अथ काले बहुतिथे पूर्णे प्राप्तो भुजंगमः दत्ताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वं वेश्म कृतकर्मा विवस्वतः

Bhishma said: Then, after many days had passed, the serpent, having received permission, returned to his own abode, having performed the task for Vivasvat.

भीष्म ने कहा: तब, बहुत दिन बीत जाने पर, सर्प अनुमति पाकर, विवस्वत का कार्य करके, अपने लोक में लौट आया।

तं भार्या समभिक्रामत्पादशौचादिभिर्गुणैः उपपन्नां च तां साध्वीं पन्नगः पर्यपृच्छत

His wife approached him with the qualities of washing his feet and so on. And the serpent asked that virtuous woman who had come there,

उनकी पत्नी उनके पैर धोने आदि गुणों के साथ उनके पास पहुंची। और सर्प ने उस धर्मात्मा स्त्री से जो वहां आई थी, पूछा,

अपि त्वमसि कल्याणि देवतातिथिपूजने पूर्वमुक्तेन विधिना युक्ता युक्तेन मत्समम्

But you, O fortunate one, are engaged in the worship of deities and guests, as previously instructed, in accordance with the proper method, equal to me.

परंतु हे भाग्यवान, आप मेरे समान ही पूर्व आज्ञानुसार उचित विधि से देवताओं तथा अतिथियों की पूजा में लगे हुए हैं।

न खल्वस्यकृतार्थेन स्त्रीबुद्ध्या मार्दवीकृता मद्वियोगेन सुश्रोणि वियुक्ता धर्मसेतुना

For, his mind is not softened by the thought of a woman, since he has attained his goal. O one with beautiful hips, you are separated from the bridge of Dharma by separation from me.

चूँकि उसका मन किसी स्त्री के विचार से नरम नहीं होता, क्योंकि उसने अपना लक्ष्य प्राप्त कर लिया है। हे सुन्दर नितंबों वाली, तुम मुझसे अलग होकर धर्म के पुल से अलग हो गई हो।

नागभार्योवाच शिष्याणां गुरुशुश्रूषा विप्राणां वेदपारणम् भृत्यानां स्वामिवचनं राज्ञां लोकानुपालनम्

Nāgabhāryā said: The service of the teacher by the disciples, the mastery of the Vedas by the brahmins, The obedience of the servants to the master, the protection of the people by the kings,

नागभार्य ने कहा: शिष्यों द्वारा गुरु की सेवा, ब्राह्मणों द्वारा वेदों की निपुणता, सेवकों द्वारा स्वामी की आज्ञाकारिता, राजाओं द्वारा प्रजा की सुरक्षा,

सर्वभूतपरित्राणं क्षत्रधर्म इहोच्यते वैश्यानां यज्ञसंवृत्तिरातिथेयसमन्विता

The protection of all beings is said to be the duty of a kshatriya. The livelihood of a vaishya is based on sacrifice and hospitality.

समस्त प्राणियों की रक्षा क्षत्रिय का कर्तव्य बताया गया है। वैश्य की आजीविका त्याग और आतिथ्य पर आधारित है।

विप्रक्षत्रियवैश्यानां शुश्रूषा शूद्रकर्म तत् गृहस्थधर्मो नागेन्द्र सर्वभूतहितैषिता

The service of Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas is the duty of a Shudra. The householder's duty, O Lord of Serpents, is the desire for the welfare of all beings.

ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय और वैश्य की सेवा करना शूद्र का कर्तव्य है। हे सर्पों के देवता, गृहस्थ का कर्तव्य सभी प्राणियों के कल्याण की इच्छा है।

नियताहारता नित्यं व्रतचर्या यथाक्रमम् धर्मो हि धर्मसंबन्धादिन्द्रियाणां विशेषणम्

Regularity in diet, always following the prescribed conduct, Dharma is the qualification of the senses due to the connection with Dharma.

आहार-विहार में नियमितता, सदैव निर्धारित आचरण का पालन करना, धर्म से संबंध होने के कारण इंद्रियों की योग्यता धर्म है।

अहं कस्य कुतो वाहं कः को मे ह भवेदिति प्रयोजनमतिर्नित्यमेवं मोक्षाश्रमी भवेत्

Who am I? From where have I come? Who is mine? What will be mine? One who is always intent on the purpose of liberation should be like this.

मैं कौन हूँ? मैं कहाँ से आया हूँ? मेरा कौन है? मेरा क्या होगा? जो मोक्ष के प्रयोजन में सदैव तत्पर रहता है, उसे ऐसा ही होना चाहिए।

पतिव्रतात्वं भार्यायाः परमो धर्म उच्यते तवोपदेशान्नागेन्द्र तच्च तत्त्वेन वेद्मि वै

The highest duty of a wife is to be devoted to her husband. By your instruction, O king of serpents, I know that truth.

पत्नी का सबसे बड़ा कर्तव्य अपने पति के प्रति समर्पित होना है। हे साँपों के राजा, आपकी आज्ञा से मैं उस सत्य को जानता हूँ।

साहं धर्मं विजानन्ती धर्मनित्ये त्वयि स्थिते सत्पथं कथमुत्सृज्य यास्यामि विषमे पथि

Knowing the Dharma, and you being established in the Dharma, How can I abandon the good path and go on a difficult path?

धर्म को जानकर और धर्म में स्थित होकर मैं अच्छे मार्ग को छोड़कर कठिन मार्ग पर कैसे जा सकता हूँ?

देवतानां महाभाग धर्मचर्या न हीयते अतिथीनां च सत्कारे नित्ययुक्तास्म्यतन्द्रिता

O Blessed One, the practice of the Dharma of the gods does not decline. I am always diligent in honoring guests.

हे धन्य, देवताओं के धर्म का अभ्यास कम नहीं होता है। मैं अतिथियों के आदर-सत्कार में सदैव तत्पर रहता हूँ।

सप्ताष्टदिवसास्त्वद्य विप्रस्येहागतस्य वै स च कार्यं न मे ख्याति दर्शनं तव काङ्क्षति

It has been seven or eight days since the brahmin came here. He does not know my purpose, but he desires to see you.

ब्राह्मण को यहाँ आये सात-आठ दिन हो गये। वह मेरा उद्देश्य नहीं जानता, परन्तु वह तुम्हें देखना चाहता है।

गोमत्यास्त्वेष पुलिने त्वद्दर्शनसमुत्सुकः आसीनोऽऽवर्तयन्ब्रह्म ब्राह्मणः संशितव्रतः

On the bank of the river Gomati, a brahmin of firm vows, eager to see you, was sitting and reciting the Vedas.

गोमती नदी के तट पर आपके दर्शन की इच्छा रखने वाला एक दृढ़ व्रतधारी ब्राह्मण बैठा हुआ वेदों का पाठ कर रहा था।

अहं त्वनेन नागेन्द्र सामपूर्वं समाहिता प्रस्थाप्यो मत्सकाशं स संप्राप्तो भुजगोत्तमः

I am the one who, with all the proper preparations, has sent this excellent snake to you.

मैं ही वह व्यक्ति हूँ जिसने पूरी तैयारी के साथ यह उत्तम साँप आपके पास भेजा है।

एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाप्राज्ञ तत्र गन्तुं त्वमर्हसि दातुमर्हसि वा तस्य दर्शनं दर्शनश्रवः

Having heard this, O greatly wise one, it is proper for you to go there. Or you should grant him the sight of your sight.

हे महाबुद्धिमान, यह सुनकर तुम्हारे लिये वहीं जाना उचित है। अथवा आप उसे अपनी दृष्टि का दर्शन प्रदान करें।
