भीष्म उवाच भूतानां गुणसंख्यानं भूयः पुत्र निशामय द्वैपायनमुखाद्भ्रष्टं श्लाघया परयानघ

Bhīṣma said: O son! Listen once again to an enumeration of the qualities in beings. O unblemished one! These are praiseworthy words, uttered from Dvaipāyana's mouth.

भीष्म ने कहा: हे पुत्र! प्राणियों में गुणों की एक गणना एक बार फिर सुनो। हे निष्कलंक! ये द्वैपायन के मुख से निकले प्रशंसनीय शब्द हैं।

दीप्तानलनिभः प्राह भगवान्धूम्रवर्चसे ततोऽहमपि वक्ष्यामि भूयः पुत्र निदर्शनम्

The words spoken by the illustrious one are like a blazing fire, with flames that have no smoke. O son! I am recounting these examples to you yet again.

उस प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्ति द्वारा कहे गए शब्द धधकती आग की तरह हैं, ऐसी लपटों के साथ जिनमें धुआं नहीं होता। हे वत्स मैं ये उदाहरण आपको फिर से बता रहा हूं।

भूमेः स्थैर्यं पृथुत्वं च काठिन्यं प्रसवात्मता गन्धो गुरुत्वं शक्तिश्च संघातः स्थापना धृतिः

The earth has qualities of stability, gravity, hardness, productiveness, smell, heaviness, capacity, accumulation, establishment and fortitude.

पृथ्वी में स्थिरता, गुरुत्व, कठोरता, उत्पादकता, गंध, भारीपन, क्षमता, संचय, स्थापना और दृढ़ता के गुण हैं।

अपां शैत्यं रसः क्लेदो द्रवत्वं स्नेहसौम्यता जिह्वा विष्यन्दिनी चैव भौमाप्यास्रवणं तथा

The water has qualities of being cool, juices, moisture, liquidity, softness, tranquility, taste, flowing and wetness in earthy objects.

जल में शीतलता, रस, नमी, तरलता, कोमलता, शांति, स्वाद, प्रवाह और मिट्टी की वस्तुओं में गीलापन जैसे गुण होते हैं।

अग्नेर्दुर्धर्षता तेजस्तापः पाकः प्रकाशनम् शौचं रागो लघुस्तैक्ष्ण्यं दशमं चोर्ध्वभागिता

The qualities of fire are difficulty of resisting, energy, heat, capacity to cook, radiance, purification, affection, lightness, sharpness and the ability to rise upwards, as the tenth.

अग्नि के दसवें गुण हैं प्रतिरोध करने में कठिनाई, ऊर्जा, गर्मी, पकाने की क्षमता, चमक, शुद्धि, स्नेह, हल्कापन, तीक्ष्णता और ऊपर की ओर उठने की क्षमता।

वायोरनियमः स्पर्शो वादस्थानं स्वतन्त्रता बलं शैघ्र्यं च मोहश्च चेष्टा कर्मकृता भवः

The qualities of the wind are control, touch, the location of speech, independence, strength, speed, confusion, effort and the performance of tasks.

वायु के गुण हैं नियंत्रण, स्पर्श, वाणी का स्थान, स्वतंत्रता, शक्ति, गति, भ्रम, प्रयत्न और कार्य सम्पादन।

आकाशस्य गुणः शब्दो व्यापित्वं छिद्रतापि च अनाश्रयमनालम्बमव्यक्तमविकारिता

The qualities of space are sound, expanse, ability to pervade, the lack of a foundation, the lack of a refuge, not being manifest,

अंतरिक्ष के गुण हैं ध्वनि, विस्तार, व्याप्त होने की क्षमता, आधार का अभाव, आश्रय का अभाव, प्रकट न होना,

अप्रतीघातता चैव भूतत्वं विकृतानि च गुणाः पञ्चाशतं प्रोक्ताः पञ्चभूतात्मभाविताः

not being transformed, the ability of not being resisted and the ability to cause transformations in beings. Created by the five elements, it is said to possess fifty qualities.

रूपांतरित न होना, विरोध न करने की क्षमता और प्राणियों में परिवर्तन लाने की क्षमता। पाँच तत्वों द्वारा निर्मित, इसमें पचास गुण होते हैं।

चलोपपत्तिर्व्यक्तिश्च विसर्गः कल्पना क्षमा सदसच्चाशुता चैव मनसो नव वै गुणाः

Fickleness, argumentation, expression, detachment, imagination, forgiveness, propensity towards good, propensity towards evil and lack of readiness—these are the nine qualities of the mind.

चंचलता, तर्क-वितर्क, अभिव्यक्ति, वैराग्य, कल्पना, क्षमा, अच्छाई की ओर प्रवृत्ति, बुराई की ओर प्रवृत्ति और तत्परता की कमी- ये मन के नौ गुण हैं।

इष्टानिष्टविकल्पश्च व्यवसायः समाधिता संशयः प्रतिपत्तिश्च बुद्धौ पञ्चेह ये गुणाः

Thinking good and evil, enterprise, concentration, doubt and observation—these are the five qualities of intelligence.

अच्छा और बुरा सोचना, उद्यम, एकाग्रता, संदेह और अवलोकन- ये बुद्धि के पांच गुण हैं।

युधिष्ठिर उवाच कथं पञ्चगुणा बुद्धिः कथं पञ्चेन्द्रिया गुणाः एतन्मे सर्वमाचक्ष्व सूक्ष्मज्ञानं पितामह

Yudhiṣṭhira asked: How can intelligence have five qualities? How can the senses possess qualities? O grandfather! Tell me everything about this subtle knowledge.

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा: बुद्धि में पाँच गुण कैसे हो सकते हैं? इंद्रियों में गुण कैसे हो सकते हैं? हे दादा! इस सूक्ष्म ज्ञान के विषय में सब कुछ बताइये।

भीष्म उवाच आहुः षष्टिं भूतगुणान्वै; भूतविशिष्टा नित्यविषक्ताः भूतविषक्ताश्चाक्षरसृष्टाः; पुत्र न नित्यं तदिह वदन्ति

Bhīṣma replied: There are said to be sixty qualities in beings. Beings are always attached to those qualities. Beings, and what they are attached to, have been created by Akṣara. O son! That is what has always been spoken about in this world.

भीष्म ने उत्तर दिया: कहा जाता है कि प्राणियों में साठ गुण होते हैं। प्राणी सदैव उन गुणों से जुड़े रहते हैं। प्राणी, और जिससे वे जुड़े हुए हैं, अक्षर द्वारा निर्मित किया गया है। हे वत्स इस दुनिया में हमेशा इसी के बारे में बात की जाती रही है।

तत्पुत्र चिन्ताकलितं यदुक्त;मनागतं वै तव संप्रतीह भूतार्थतत्त्वं तदवाप्य सर्वं; भूतप्रभावाद्भव शान्तबुद्धिः

O son! Everything present in this world is said to have been thought in his mind and created. That is the truth about the origin of all beings and about the origin and destruction of beings. Therefore, obtain tranquility in your intelligence.

हे वत्स ऐसा कहा जाता है कि इस दुनिया में मौजूद हर चीज़ को उसके दिमाग में सोचा और बनाया गया है। यही सभी प्राणियों की उत्पत्ति तथा प्राणियों की उत्पत्ति व विनाश के विषय में सत्य है। अत: अपनी बुद्धि में शांति प्राप्त करो।
