Yudhiṣṭhira said: These lords of the earth are lying down on the surface of the ground. Those immensely strong ones have lost their lives in the midst of the armies.
युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: ये पृथ्वी के स्वामी भूमि की सतह पर लेटे हुए हैं। उन अत्यंत बलवानों ने सेनाओं के बीच में अपने प्राण खो दिये हैं।

Each of them was terrible in strength, endowed with the might of ten thousand elephants. In the battle, they have been slain by men who were their equals in energy and strength.

मृता इति च शब्दोऽयं वर्तत्येषु गतासुषु
O immensely wise one! Yet they are lying down here, bereft of their lives. When they have lost their lives, the word 'dead' is used about them.
हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! फिर भी वे अपने प्राणों से वंचित होकर यहां पड़े हुए हैं। जब उनकी जान चली जाती है तो उनके बारे में 'मृत' शब्द का प्रयोग किया जाता है।

तत्र मे संशयो जातः कुतः संज्ञा मृता इति
These dead kings were generally fierce in their valour. I have a doubt in this connection. Where do senses and death come from?
ये मृत राजा आम तौर पर अपनी वीरता में भयंकर थे। इस संबंध में मुझे संदेह है. इंद्रियाँ और मृत्यु कहाँ से आती हैं?
Who dies? Where does death come from? Why do subjects on earth confront death and are borne away by it? O one who is like the immortals! O grandfather! Tell me this.

पुरा कृतयुगे तात राजासीदविकम्पकः
स शत्रुवशमापन्नः संग्रामे क्षीणवाहनः
Bhīṣma replied: O son! In ancient times, in kṛta yuga, there was a king named Avikampaka. With his mounts having been destroyed in a battle, he came under the subjugation of the enemy.
भीष्म ने उत्तर दिया: हे पुत्र! प्राचीन काल में, कृत युग में, अविकम्पक नाम का एक राजा था। युद्ध में उसकी सेना नष्ट हो जाने के कारण वह शत्रु के अधीन हो गया।

His son was named Harī and he was Nārāyaṇa's equal in strength. However, with his army and his followers, he was slain in the battle by the enemy.

शत्रुभिर्ग्रहणं संख्ये पुत्रस्य मरणं तथा
The lord of men told him everything that had happened, about his being captured in the battle by the enemy and about his son's death.
मनुष्यों के स्वामी ने उसे वह सब कुछ बताया जो घटित हुआ था, शत्रु द्वारा युद्ध में पकड़े जाने और उसके पुत्र की मृत्यु के बारे में।
Engaged in the creation of subjects, the immensely energetic grandfather created a large number of subjects. They became extremely old, but did not die, and generated offspring.

निरुच्छ्वासमिवोन्नद्धं त्रैलोक्यमभवन्नृप
O unblemished one! There was not the slightest bit of space that was not covered with living beings. O king! The three worlds were covered with them and were unable to breathe.
हे निष्कलंक! ऐसी कोई भी जगह नहीं थी जो जीवित प्राणियों से ढकी न हो। हे राजा! तीनों लोक उनसे आच्छादित थे और सांस लेने में असमर्थ थे।

तस्य चिन्ता समुत्पन्ना संहारं प्रति भूपते
चिन्तयन्नाध्यगच्छच्च संहारे हेतुकारणम्
O lord of the earth! He then began to think about how they might be destroyed. However, though he thought about it, he could not determine any reason for the destruction.
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! फिर वह सोचने लगा कि उन्हें कैसे नष्ट किया जाए। हालाँकि, हालाँकि उसने इसके बारे में सोचा, लेकिन वह विनाश का कोई कारण निर्धारित नहीं कर सका।

O king! The fire that resulted from the illustrious one's anger burnt down heaven, earth, the firmament and the universe, with its mobile and immobile objects.
हे राजा! महामहिम के क्रोध से उत्पन्न आग ने स्वर्ग, पृथ्वी, आकाश और ब्रह्मांड को अपने जंगम और अचल वस्तुओं सहित जला दिया।

तत्रादह्यन्त भूतानि जङ्गमानि ध्रुवाणि च
महता कोपवेगेन कुपिते प्रपितामहे
When the great grandfather was enraged with the force of that great anger, living beings and immobile objects were certainly destroyed.
जब पितामह उस महान क्रोध के बल से क्रोधित हुए, तो जीवित प्राणी और स्थावर वस्तुएँ निश्चित रूप से नष्ट हो गईं।
Then the god Sthāṇu Śivā, the destroyer of enemy heroes and the lord of the Veda-s, the one who has tawny and matted hair, wanted to ensure a refuge for the universe and went to Brahmā.
तब भगवान स्थाणु शिव, शत्रु नायकों का नाश करने वाले और वेदों के स्वामी, जिनके बाल भूरे और उलझे हुए हैं, ब्रह्मांड के लिए आश्रय सुनिश्चित करना चाहते थे और ब्रह्मा के पास गए।
"It is my view that you should get a boon from me. What is your desire? I will accomplish it today. O Śambhu! I am the doer. I will ensure your pleasure and your growth.""
"मेरा विचार है कि तुम्हें मुझसे वरदान प्राप्त करना चाहिए। तुम्हारी इच्छा क्या है? मैं आज उसे पूरा करूंगा। हे शंभु! मैं कर्ता हूं। मैं तुम्हारी खुशी और तुम्हारी वृद्धि सुनिश्चित करूंगा।"
