Shantiparvan · v1

Yudhisthira said: O bull among the Bharata lineage! Having attained great prosperity or wealth, or having attained a long life, how can one transcend death?

Shantiparvan · v2

By great austerities, by great deeds, by learning, or by the use of elixirs, who does not attain the end of old age and death?

Shantiparvan · v3

Bhishma said: Here, I will relate an ancient legend, The conversation between the mendicant Panchasikha and Janaka.

Shantiparvan · v4

King Janaka of Videha, the great sage, the best knower of the Vedas, asked Pañcaśikha to resolve his doubts about Dharma and Artha.

Shantiparvan · v5

By what conduct, O Blessed One, can one escape old age and death? By asceticism, or by wisdom, or by action, or by learning?

Shantiparvan · v6

Thus addressed, he, who knew the truth, replied to Vaideha: There is no cessation of these two, nor is there any non-cessation at all.

Shantiparvan · v7

For the days do not cease, nor the months, nor the nights, And he, being impermanent, goes on a long journey.

Shantiparvan · v8

The destruction of all beings is always carried away by the stream. When one is being carried away and sinking in the ocean of time, without a raft, in the great whirlpool of old age and death, no one comes to the rescue.

Shantiparvan · v9

He will not be anyone's, nor will he be anyone's. This meeting on the path is only with wives, other relatives. This is not an eternal association, for it has never been obtained by anyone.

Shantiparvan · v10

They are thrown again and again by that very one, hissing again and again. Born and born again by time, like clouds by the wind.

Shantiparvan · v11

Old age and death are the devourers of beings, like wolves. Of the strong and the weak, of the short and the tall,

Shantiparvan · v12

When the elements are thus, and the elements are always unstable, How can one be happy when they are born, and how can one be sad when they die?

Shantiparvan · v13

From where have I come? Who am I? Where shall I go? To whom do I belong? Where do I stand? Where shall I be? Why do you grieve?

Shantiparvan · v14

There is no one who sees heaven or hell. One should give and perform sacrifices without transgressing the scriptures.
