Nārada said: The Aśoka (tree) is for the destruction of grief, the Śāstra is for peace and is auspicious. Having heard it, one attains wisdom; having attained it, one prospers.

दुख के हजारों स्थान, भय के सैकड़ों स्थान, हर दिन मूर्खों में प्रवेश करें, बुद्धिमानों में नहीं।

तस्मादनिष्टनाशार्थमितिहासं निबोध मे
तिष्ठते चेद्वशे बुद्धिर्लभते शोकनाशनम्
Therefore, for the sake of destroying the undesirable, listen to my story. If the mind remains under control, one attains the destruction of sorrow.
अत: अवांछनीयता का नाश करने के लिये मेरी कथा सुनो। यदि मन वश में रहे तो दुखों का नाश हो जाता है।

अनिष्टसंप्रयोगाच्च विप्रयोगात्प्रियस्य च
मनुष्या मानसैर्दुःखैर्युज्यन्ते अल्पबुद्धयः
And from the union with the undesirable and the separation from the desirable, Men of little wisdom are united with mental sorrows.
तथा अवांछनीय के संयोग से तथा वांछनीय के वियोग से अल्पबुद्धि मनुष्य मानसिक दुःखों से युक्त होते हैं।

द्रव्येषु समतीतेषु ये गुणास्तान्न चिन्तयेत्
ताननाद्रियमाणस्य स्नेहबन्धः प्रमुच्यते
When the things are past, one should not think of the qualities that were in them. The bond of affection is released from one who does not care for them.
जब चीजें पुरानी हो जाती हैं तो उनमें जो गुण थे उनके बारे में नहीं सोचना चाहिए। जो उनकी परवाह नहीं करता उससे स्नेह का बंधन छूट जाता है।
Where there is passion, one should see the faults there. One should see the benefit as undesirable, and thus one quickly becomes free from passion.
जहां लगन हो, वहीं दोष देखना चाहिए। व्यक्ति को लाभ को अवांछनीय के रूप में देखना चाहिए, और इस प्रकार वह शीघ्र ही वासना से मुक्त हो जाता है।

नार्थो न धर्मो न यशो योऽतीतमनुशोचति
अप्यभावेन युज्येत तच्चास्य न निवर्तते
He who grieves over the past loses wealth, virtue, and fame. Even if he were to be united with non-existence, that would not cease.
जो अतीत पर शोक करता है वह धन, गुण और प्रसिद्धि खो देता है। यदि वह अस्तित्वहीनता के साथ एकाकार भी हो जाए, तो भी वह समाप्त नहीं होगा।

गुणैर्भूतानि युज्यन्ते वियुज्यन्ते तथैव च
सर्वाणि नैतदेकस्य शोकस्थानं हि विद्यते
The elements are united by their qualities and are also separated by them. All of them are like that. This is not the case for one alone. This is not a place for sorrow.
तत्व अपने गुणों से एकजुट होते हैं और उनके द्वारा अलग भी होते हैं। ये सभी ऐसे ही हैं. यह मामला अकेले किसी एक का नहीं है. यह दुःख की जगह नहीं है.

मृतं वा यदि वा नष्टं योऽतीतमनुशोचति
दुःखेन लभते दुःखं द्वावनर्थौ प्रपद्यते
He who grieves over the past, whether it be death or loss, attains sorrow through sorrow, and falls into two misfortunes.
जो अतीत पर शोक करता है, चाहे वह मृत्यु हो या हानि, वह दुःख से दुःख प्राप्त करता है और दो दुर्भाग्य में पड़ जाता है।

नाश्रु कुर्वन्ति ये बुद्ध्या दृष्ट्वा लोकेषु संततिम्
सम्यक्प्रपश्यतः सर्वं नाश्रुकर्मोपपद्यते
Those who, with wisdom, do not shed tears when they see the continuity in the world For those who see everything correctly, the act of shedding tears does not arise.
जो लोग ज्ञान के साथ संसार में निरंतरता को देखकर आंसू नहीं बहाते, जो लोग हर चीज को सही ढंग से देखते हैं, उनके लिए आंसू बहाने की नौबत ही नहीं आती।
When physical or mental suffering has arisen, if one is unable to make an effort to remove it, one should not think about it.
शारीरिक या मानसिक कष्ट उत्पन्न होने पर यदि कोई उसे दूर करने का प्रयास नहीं कर पाता तो उसके बारे में नहीं सोचना चाहिए।

भैषज्यमेतद्दुःखस्य यदेतन्नानुचिन्तयेत्
चिन्त्यमानं हि न व्येति भूयश्चापि प्रवर्धते
This is the medicine for suffering: not to think about it. For when one thinks about it, it does not go away, but increases.
यह दुख की दवा है: इसके बारे में न सोचना। क्योंकि जब कोई उसके विषय में सोचता है, तो वह दूर नहीं होती, वरन बढ़ती है।

प्रज्ञया मानसं दुःखं हन्याच्छारीरमौषधैः
एतद्विज्ञानसामर्थ्यं न बालैः समतामियात्
By wisdom one should destroy mental suffering, by medicine one should destroy physical suffering. This is the power of knowledge, which is not equal to that of fools.
बुद्धि से मानसिक दुःख का नाश करना चाहिए, औषधि से शारीरिक दुःख का नाश करना चाहिए। यह ज्ञान की शक्ति है, जो मूर्खों के बराबर नहीं है।

अनित्यं यौवनं रूपं जीवितं द्रव्यसंचयः
आरोग्यं प्रियसंवासो गृध्येत्तत्र न पण्डितः
Youth, beauty, life, wealth, health, and the company of loved ones are impermanent. The wise do not crave them.
यौवन, सौंदर्य, जीवन, धन, स्वास्थ्य और प्रियजनों का साथ अनित्य है। बुद्धिमान लोग उनकी लालसा नहीं करते।

न जानपदिकं दुःखमेकः शोचितुमर्हति
अशोचन्प्रतिकुर्वीत यदि पश्येदुपक्रमम्
One should not grieve alone for the suffering of the people. If one sees an attack, one should act to prevent it, without grieving.
लोगों के दुख के लिए अकेले शोक नहीं मनाना चाहिए। यदि कोई हमला देखता है, तो उसे शोक किए बिना उसे रोकने के लिए कार्य करना चाहिए।
There is no doubt that in life there is much more suffering than happiness. And because of attachment to the objects of the senses, there is delusion and death, which is unpleasant.
इसमें कोई शक नहीं कि जिंदगी में खुशियों से कहीं ज्यादा दुख है। और इन्द्रियों के विषयों में आसक्ति के कारण मोह और मृत्यु होती है, जो अप्रिय है।

परित्यजति यो दुःखं सुखं वाप्युभयं नरः
अभ्येति ब्रह्म सोऽत्यन्तं न तं शोचन्ति पण्डिताः
The man who abandons both happiness and suffering, he attains the supreme Brahman. The wise do not grieve for him.
जो मनुष्य सुख और दुःख दोनों का त्याग कर देता है, वह परम ब्रह्म को प्राप्त हो जाता है। बुद्धिमान लोग उसके लिये शोक नहीं करते।

दुःखमर्था हि त्यज्यन्ते पालने न च ते सुखाः
दुःखेन चाधिगम्यन्ते नाशमेषां न चिन्तयेत्
Wealth is to be given up because of suffering, and it does not bring happiness when it is protected. It is obtained through suffering, and one should not think about its destruction.
दुःख के कारण धन का त्याग करना पड़ता है और उसकी रक्षा करने से सुख नहीं मिलता। यह कष्ट से प्राप्त होता है और इसके विनाश के बारे में नहीं सोचना चाहिए।
There is no end to thirst, but contentment is the highest happiness. Therefore, the wise see contentment alone as wealth here.
प्यास का कोई अंत नहीं है, लेकिन संतोष ही सबसे बड़ा सुख है। इसलिए, बुद्धिमान लोग यहाँ संतोष को ही धन के रूप में देखते हैं।

निमेषमात्रमपि हि वयो गच्छन्न तिष्ठति
स्वशरीरेष्वनित्येषु नित्यं किमनुचिन्तयेत्
For even a moment of life is not stable, What is the use of thinking about this impermanent body?
क्योंकि जीवन का एक क्षण भी स्थिर नहीं है, इस अनित्य शरीर के बारे में सोचने से क्या लाभ?

भूतेष्वभावं संचिन्त्य ये बुद्ध्वा तमसः परम्
न शोचन्ति गताध्वानः पश्यन्तः परमां गतिम्
Those who, having contemplated the non-existence of the elements, and having understood that which is beyond darkness, Do not grieve, having gone beyond the path, seeing the highest goal,
जो लोग तत्वों के अस्तित्व पर विचार करके और अंधकार से परे जो है उसे समझकर, पथ से परे जाकर, उच्चतम लक्ष्य को देखकर शोक नहीं करते हैं,
If he sees a means of deliverance from suffering, he should not grieve, but should begin, and be prudent and free from vice.
यदि उसे दुख से मुक्ति का कोई उपाय दिखाई देता है, तो उसे शोक नहीं करना चाहिए, बल्कि शुरुआत करनी चाहिए, और विवेकपूर्ण और दोषों से मुक्त होना चाहिए।

In sound, touch, form, smell, and taste, There is nothing superior to enjoyment, for the rich or the poor.
शब्द, स्पर्श, रूप, गंध और स्वाद में, अमीर या गरीब के लिए आनंद से बढ़कर कुछ भी नहीं है।

प्राक्संप्रयोगाद्भूतानां नास्ति दुःखमनामयम्
विप्रयोगात्तु सर्वस्य न शोचेत्प्रकृतिस्थितः
Before the union of the elements, there is no disease or suffering. But when there is separation from all, one should not grieve, remaining in the natural state.
तत्वों के मिलन से पहले कोई रोग या कष्ट नहीं होता। परंतु जब सबसे वियोग हो तो स्वाभाविक अवस्था में रहकर शोक नहीं करना चाहिए।

धृत्या शिश्नोदरं रक्षेत्पाणिपादं च चक्षुषा
चक्षुःश्रोत्रे च मनसा मनो वाचं च विद्यया
One should protect the penis and the belly with patience, the hands and feet with the eyes, the eyes and ears with the mind, and the mind with knowledge.
मनुष्य को धैर्य से लिंग और पेट की, आँखों से हाथों और पैरों की, मन से आँखों और कानों की और ज्ञान से मन की रक्षा करनी चाहिए।

प्रणयं प्रतिसंहृत्य संस्तुतेष्वितरेषु च
विचरेदसमुन्नद्धः स सुखी स च पण्डितः
One who has withdrawn his affection for those who are praised and for those who are not, and who does not become elated, is happy and wise.
जिसकी प्रशंसा की जाती है और जिसकी प्रशंसा नहीं की जाती है, उनके प्रति जिसने अपना स्नेह वापस ले लिया है और जो प्रसन्न नहीं होता है, वह सुखी और बुद्धिमान है।
One who is content with the Self, who is seated in the joy of the Self, who is independent, who is free from attachment, and who wanders with the Self as his only companion, he would be happy.
जो स्वयं से संतुष्ट है, जो स्वयं के आनंद में बैठा है, जो स्वतंत्र है, जो आसक्ति से मुक्त है और जो स्वयं को ही अपना एकमात्र साथी मानकर विचरण करता है, वह सुखी होगा।
