युधिष्ठिर उवाच हताः पुत्राश्च पौत्राश्च भ्रातरः पितरस्तथा श्वशुरा गुरवश्चैव मातुलाः सपितामहाः

Yudhiṣṭhira said, "Slain are the sons, grandsons, brothers, fathers, fathers-in-law, preceptors, maternal uncles, grandfathers,

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा, "बेटे, पोते, भाई, पिता, ससुर, गुरु, मामा, दादा, मारे गए हैं।"

क्षत्रियाश्च महात्मानः संबन्धिसुहृदस्तथा वयस्या ज्ञातयश्चैव भ्रातरश्च पितामह

great-souled kṣatriya-s, kin, well-wishers, friends, relatives, O grandfather

महान आत्मा वाले क्षत्रिय, परिजन, शुभचिंतक, मित्र, रिश्तेदार, हे पितामह

बहवश्च मनुष्येन्द्रा नानादेशसमागताः घातिता राज्यलुब्धेन मयैकेन पितामह

these and many kings who had assembled from many countries - all because of my freed for the kingdom, O grandfather.

ये और कई राजा जो कई देशों से इकट्ठे हुए थे - हे पितामह, मेरे राज्य के लिए स्वतंत्र होने के कारण।

तांस्तादृशानहं हत्वा धर्मनित्यान्महीक्षितः असकृत्सोमपान्वीरान्किं प्राप्स्यामि तपोधन

O grandfather! They have been killed by me alone. O one rich in austerities! Those lords of the earth were always established in dharma. They performed good deeds and drank somā. Having caused such people to be killed, what will I obtain?

हे दादा! वे मेरे ही द्वारा मारे गये हैं। हे तपस्या के धनी! वे पृथ्वी के स्वामी सदैव धर्म में स्थित रहते थे। उन्होंने अच्छे कर्म किये और सोम का पान किया। ऐसे लोगों को मरवाकर मुझे क्या मिलेगा?

दह्याम्यनिशमद्याहं चिन्तयानः पुनः पुनः हीनां पार्थिवसिंहैस्तैः श्रीमद्भिः पृथिवीमिमाम्

Thinking repeatedly about this, I am incessantly being burnt. Those kings were prosperous and like lions. The earth is without them now.

यह बात बार-बार सोच-सोचकर मैं निरंतर जलता जा रहा हूं। वे राजा समृद्ध और सिंह के समान थे। पृथ्वी अब उनके बिना है.

दृष्ट्वा ज्ञातिवधं घोरं हतांश्च शतशः परान् कोटिशश्च नरानन्यान्परितप्ये पितामह

O grandfather! On seeing this terrible slaughter of relatives, the slaying of hundreds of the enemy and other men in crores, I am being tormented.

हे दादा! स्वजनों का यह भयानक संहार, सैकड़ों शत्रुओं तथा करोड़ों अन्य मनुष्यों का वध देखकर मुझे बड़ी पीड़ा हो रही है।

का नु तासां वरस्त्रीणामवस्थाद्य भविष्यति विहीनानां स्वतनयैः पतिभिर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा

What will be the plight of those beautiful women? They have been deprived of their sons, husbands and brothers.

उन सुंदरियों की क्या दुर्दशा होगी? वे अपने पुत्रों, पतियों और भाइयों से वंचित हो गई हैं।

अस्मानन्तकरान्घोरान्पाण्डवान्वृष्णिसंहितान् आक्रोशन्त्यः कृशा दीना निपतन्त्यश्च भूतले

They are censuring us, the Pāṇḍava-s and the Vṛṣṇi-s, as the perpetrators of terrible deeds. They are wan and distressed and are falling down on the surface of the ground.

वे हमें, पांडवों और वृष्णियों को भयानक कर्म करने वालों के रूप में निन्दा कर रहे हैं। वे क्षीण और व्यथित हैं और भूमि पर गिर रहे हैं।

अपश्यन्त्यः पितॄन्भ्रातॄन्पतीन्पुत्रांश्च योषितः त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्प्रियान्सर्वा गमिष्यन्ति यमक्षयम्

On seeing their fathers, brothers, husbands and sons, all those women are ready to give up their beloved lives and go to Yāma's eternal abode.

अपने पिता, भाइयों, पतियों और पुत्रों को देखकर, वे सभी स्त्रियाँ अपने प्रिय जीवन को त्यागकर यम के शाश्वत निवास में जाने के लिए तैयार हो जाती हैं।

वत्सलत्वाद्द्विजश्रेष्ठ तत्र मे नास्ति संशयः व्यक्तं सौक्ष्म्याच्च धर्मस्य प्राप्स्यामः स्त्रीवधं वयम्

O best among brāhmana-s! They are driven by affection. I have no doubt about this. It is evident that because of the subtlety of dharma, we will become the slayers of women.

हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! वे स्नेह से प्रेरित होते हैं। मुझे इस बारे में कोई संदेह नहीं है. यह स्पष्ट है कि धर्म की सूक्ष्मता के कारण हम स्त्रियों के हत्यारे बन जायेंगे।

ते वयं सुहृदो हत्वा कृत्वा पापमनन्तकम् नरके निपतिष्यामो ह्यधःशिरस एव च

We committed an eternal sin by killing our well-wishers. We will be cast into hell, with our heads hanging downwards.

हमने अपने शुभचिंतकों की हत्या करके शाश्वत पाप किया है।' हमें सिर नीचे की ओर झुकाकर नरक में डाल दिया जाएगा।

शरीराणि विमोक्ष्यामस्तपसोग्रेण सत्तम आश्रमांश्च विशेषांस्त्वं ममाचक्ष्व पितामह

O supreme one! We will perform terrible austerities and free ourselves of our bodies. O grandfather! In particular, tell me about the state of life I should resort to now."

हे सर्वोच्च! हम घोर तपस्या करेंगे और अपने शरीर को मुक्त करायेंगे। हे दादा! विशेष रूप से, मुझे जीवन की उस स्थिति के बारे में बताएं जिसका मुझे अब सहारा लेना चाहिए।"
