भीष्म उवाच तस्यां निशायां व्युष्टायां गते तस्मिन्द्विजोत्तमे निष्क्रम्य गौतमोऽगच्छत्समुद्रं प्रति भारत

Bhīṣma said: When night was over, that supreme among brāhmana-s departed. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Gautama also left and headed in the direction of the ocean.

भीष्म ने कहा: जब रात हो गई, तो ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ वह चला गया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! गौतम भी चले गये और समुद्र की ओर चले गये।

सामुद्रकान्स वणिजस्ततोऽपश्यत्स्थितान्पथि स तेन सार्थेन सह प्रययौ सागरं प्रति

Along the road, he saw some traders advancing towards the ocean. In the company of their caravan, he went towards the ocean.

रास्ते में उसने कुछ व्यापारियों को समुद्र की ओर बढ़ते देखा। वह उनके कारवां के साथ सागर की ओर चला गया।

स तु सार्थो महाराज कस्मिंश्चिद्गिरिगह्वरे मत्तेन द्विरदेनाथ निहतः प्रायशोऽभवत्

O great king! However, in a mountainous cavern, that caravan was attacked by a crazy elephant and most of them were killed.

हे महान राजा! हालाँकि, एक पहाड़ी गुफा में, उस कारवां पर एक पागल हाथी ने हमला किया और उनमें से अधिकांश मारे गए।

स कथंचित्ततस्तस्मात्सार्थान्मुक्तो द्विजस्तदा कांदिग्भूतो जीवितार्थी प्रदुद्रावोत्तरां दिशम्

In some way, the brāhmaṇa managed to escape. Not knowing the directions but wishing to save his life, he fled in the northern direction.

किसी तरह ब्राह्मण भागने में सफल हो गया। दिशाओं का ज्ञान न होने पर भी वह अपनी जान बचाने की इच्छा से उत्तर दिशा की ओर भाग गया।

स सर्वतः परिभ्रष्टः सार्थाद्देशात्तथार्थतः एकाकी व्यद्रवत्तत्र वने किंपुरुषो यथा

He lost everything—the caravan, the directions, the riches. He fled alone through the forest, like a kimpuruṣa.

उसने सब कुछ खो दिया - कारवां, दिशाएँ, धन। वह किंपुरुष की तरह जंगल से अकेले भाग गया।

स पन्थानमथासाद्य समुद्राभिसरं तदा आससाद वनं रम्यं महत्पुष्पितपादपम्

He eventually managed to reach a road that led in the direction of the ocean and then reached a beautiful forest that was full of large blossoming trees.

अंततः वह उस सड़क तक पहुँचने में कामयाब हो गया जो समुद्र की दिशा में जाती थी और फिर एक खूबसूरत जंगल में पहुँच गया जो बड़े-बड़े फूलों वाले पेड़ों से भरा हुआ था।

सर्वर्तुकैराम्रवनैः पुष्पितैरुपशोभितम् नन्दनोद्देशसदृशं यक्षकिंनरसेवितम्

There were beautiful and flowering mango trees in every direction. That spot was like Nandana and was inhabited by yakṣa-s and kinnara-s.

हर दिशा में सुंदर और फूल वाले आम के पेड़ थे। वह स्थान नंदना जैसा था और वहां यक्ष और किन्नर रहते थे।

शालतालधवाश्वत्थत्वचागुरुवनैस्तथा चन्दनस्य च मुख्यस्य पादपैरुपशोभितम् गिरिप्रस्थेषु रम्येषु शुभेषु सुसुगन्धिषु

There were groves of śala, tāla, dhāva, aśvattha and sandalwood trees. The best among trees were full of flowers. The beautiful valley in the mountains was extremely fragrant with auspicious scents.

वहां शल, ताल, धव, अश्वत्थ और चंदन के वृक्षों के उपवन थे। वृक्षों में सर्वोत्तम पुष्पों से लदे हुए थे। पर्वतों की सुन्दर घाटी मंगलमय सुगंधों से अत्यंत सुगंधित थी।

समन्ततो द्विजश्रेष्ठा वल्गु कूजन्ति तत्र वै मनुष्यवदनास्त्वन्ये भारुण्डा इति विश्रुताः भूलिङ्गशकुनाश्चान्ये समुद्रं सर्वतोऽभवन्

Excellent birds warbled and chirped in every direction. There were the famous bhāruṇḍa birds, with faces like that of men. In every direction, there were bhūliṅga-s and other birds that frequented the ocean.

उत्कृष्ट पक्षी हर दिशा में चहचहाते और चहचहाते थे। वहाँ प्रसिद्ध भरुण्ड पक्षी थे, जिनके चेहरे मनुष्यों जैसे थे। हर दिशा में भूलिंग और अन्य पक्षी थे जो समुद्र में भ्रमण करते थे।

स तान्यतिमनोज्ञानि विहंगाभिरुतानि वै शृण्वन्सुरमणीयानि विप्रोऽगच्छत गौतमः

Listening to the extremely melodious and pleasant sounds of the birds, the brāhmaṇa, Gautama, moved along.

पक्षियों की अत्यंत मधुर और सुखद ध्वनि सुनकर गौतम ब्राह्मण आगे बढ़े।

ततोऽपश्यत्सुरम्ये स सुवर्णसिकताचिते देशभागे समे चित्रे स्वर्गोद्देशसमप्रभे

He then saw a lovely region that was spread with golden sand. It was wonderful and the region had a complexion like that of heaven.

फिर उसने एक सुन्दर प्रदेश देखा जो सुनहरी रेत से फैला हुआ था। यह अद्भुत था और इस क्षेत्र की छटा स्वर्ग के समान थी।

श्रिया जुष्टं महावृक्षं न्यग्रोधं परिमण्डलम् शाखाभिरनुरूपाभिर्भूषितं छत्रसंनिभम्

There was a giant and handsome banyan tree and it was rounded. It was adorned with beautiful branches and was like an umbrella.

वहाँ एक विशाल और सुंदर बरगद का पेड़ था और वह गोलाकार था। वह सुन्दर शाखाओं से सुशोभित था और छत्र के समान था।

तस्य मूलं सुसंसिक्तं वरचन्दनवारिणा दिव्यपुष्पान्वितं श्रीमत्पितामहसदोपमम्

Its root was sprinkled extremely well with water mixed with the best of sandalwood. Covered with divine flowers, it was as handsome as the grandfather's throne.

इसकी जड़ को उत्तम चंदन मिश्रित जल से अत्यंत अच्छी तरह से सींचा गया। दिव्य पुष्पों से आच्छादित वह पितामह के सिंहासन के समान शोभायमान था।

तं दृष्ट्वा गौतमः प्रीतो मुनिकान्तमनुत्तमम् मेध्यं सुरगृहप्रख्यं पुष्पितैः पादपैर्वृतम् तमागम्य मुदा युक्तस्तस्याधस्तादुपाविशत्

It was supreme and loved by the sages. On seeing it, Gautama was delighted. Surrounded by flowering trees, it looked like the house of a god. He joyfully approached it and seated himself under its branches.

यह सर्वोच्च था और ऋषियों को प्रिय था। यह देखकर गौतम प्रसन्न हो गये। फूलों के पेड़ों से घिरा यह स्थान किसी देवता के घर जैसा लग रहा था। वह ख़ुशी से उसके पास आया और उसकी शाखाओं के नीचे बैठ गया।

तत्रासीनस्य कौरव्य गौतमस्य सुखः शिवः पुष्पाणि समुपस्पृश्य प्रववावनिलः शुचिः ह्लादयन्सर्वगात्राणि गौतमस्य तदा नृप

O Kauravya! As Gautama was seated there, a pleasant and auspicious breeze began to blow. O king! That sacred breeze touched all the flowers and removed all the exhaustion from Gautama's heart and limbs.

हे कौरव्य! जैसे ही गौतम वहां बैठे, एक सुखद और शुभ हवा बहने लगी। हे राजा! उस पवित्र हवा ने सभी फूलों को छू लिया और गौतम के हृदय और अंगों की सारी थकावट दूर कर दी।

स तु विप्रः परिश्रान्तः स्पृष्टः पुण्येन वायुना सुखमासाद्य सुष्वाप भास्करश्चास्तमभ्यगात्

The brāhmaṇa was touched by the auspicious breeze. He slept happily and the sun set.

ब्राह्मण को शुभ वायु का स्पर्श हुआ। वह ख़ुशी से सो गया और सूरज डूब गया।

ततोऽस्तं भास्करे याते संध्याकाल उपस्थिते आजगाम स्वभवनं ब्रह्मलोकात्खगोत्तमः

When the sun set, twilight manifested. The best of birds returned to his own residence from the world of Brahmā.

जब सूर्य अस्त हुआ तो धुंधलका प्रकट हुआ। पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ ब्रह्मा के लोक से अपने निवास को लौट आया।

नाडीजङ्घ इति ख्यातो दयितो ब्रह्मणः सखा बकराजो महाप्राज्ञः कश्यपस्यात्मसंभवः

The king of cranes was known by the name of Nāḍījaṅgha. He was supreme among birds and was Brahmā's beloved friend. The immensely wise one was descended from Kāśyapa.

सारसों के राजा को नांदिजंघ के नाम से जाना जाता था। वह पक्षियों में श्रेष्ठ था और ब्रह्मा का प्रिय मित्र था। अत्यंत बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति कश्यप के वंशज थे।

राजधर्मेति विख्यातो बभूवाप्रतिमो भुवि देवकन्यासुतः श्रीमान्विद्वान्देवपतिप्रभः

He returned to his abode. Unsurpassed on earth, he was also known by the name of Rājadharma. He was the son of a celestial maiden. He was handsome and learned and was like the lord of the gods in his complexion.

वह अपने निवास स्थान पर लौट आया। पृथ्वी पर अद्वितीय, उन्हें राजधर्मा के नाम से भी जाना जाता था। वह एक दिव्य युवती का पुत्र था। वह सुन्दर और विद्वान था तथा उसका रंग-रूप देवताओं के स्वामी के समान था।

मृष्टहाटकसंछन्नो भूषणैरर्कसंनिभैः भूषितः सर्वगात्रेषु देवगर्भः श्रिया ज्वलन्

He was covered in golden plumage and his ornaments were like the sun. Blazing in prosperity, he was adorned all over his body. He was descended from the gods.

वह सुनहरे पंखों से ढका हुआ था और उसके आभूषण सूर्य के समान थे। समृद्धि से चमकते हुए, वह अपने पूरे शरीर पर सुशोभित था। वह देवताओं के वंशज थे।

तमागतं द्विजं दृष्ट्वा विस्मितो गौतमोऽभवत् क्षुत्पिपासापरीतात्मा हिंसार्थी चाप्यवैक्षत

On seeing the bird arrive, Gautama was astounded. He was overcome by hunger and thirst and glanced at it, desirous of causing injury.

पक्षी को आते देख गौतम आश्चर्यचकित रह गये। वह भूख और प्यास से व्याकुल हो गया और उसे हानि पहुँचाने की इच्छा से उसकी ओर देखने लगा।

राजधर्मोवाच स्वागतं भवते विप्र दिष्ट्या प्राप्तोऽसि मे गृहम् अस्तं च सविता यातः संध्येयं समुपस्थिता

Rājadharma said, "O brāhmaṇa! Welcome. It is through good fortune that you have come to my house. The sun has set and twilight has presented itself.

राजधर्मा ने कहा, "हे ब्राह्मण! आपका स्वागत है। यह सौभाग्य है कि आप मेरे घर आए हैं। सूर्य अस्त हो गया है और गोधूलि ने अपने आप को प्रस्तुत कर दिया है।"

मम त्वं निलयं प्राप्तः प्रियातिथिरनिन्दितः पूजितो यास्यसि प्रातर्विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा

You have come to my residence as a beloved and unblemished guest. In accordance with the prescribed rites, you will be worshipped. Leave in the morning."

आप मेरे निवास पर एक प्रिय एवं निष्कलंक अतिथि के रूप में आये हैं। विधि-विधान से तुम्हारी पूजा की जायेगी। सुबह चले जाना।”
