Bhishma said: Having heard these words, the one with a purified soul, having made a decision, Having relied on his own self, and having seen his own self by himself,
भीष्म ने कहा: इन शब्दों को सुनकर, शुद्ध आत्मा वाले ने निर्णय लिया है, अपने आप पर भरोसा किया है और अपने आप को स्वयं देखा है।
With herons, with cranes, with various jīva-jīvakas, With peacocks of variegated colors, shining with hundreds of tails, With flocks of royal swans, and with delighted parrots,
बगुलों के साथ, सारस के साथ, विभिन्न जीव-जीवकों के साथ, विविध रंगों वाले मोरों के साथ, सैकड़ों पूँछों से चमकते हुए, शाही हंसों के झुंडों के साथ, और प्रसन्न तोतों के साथ,
The king of birds, Garuḍa, always goes there, And the four guardians of the world, the gods, and the groups of sages, Always come there for the welfare of the world.
पक्षियों के राजा, गरुड़, हमेशा वहाँ जाते हैं, और दुनिया के चार संरक्षक, देवता और ऋषियों के समूह, हमेशा दुनिया के कल्याण के लिए वहाँ आते हैं।
Then the Lord Vishnu saw the entire host of gods, their senses and minds agitated, thrown into confusion with the asuras and rakshasas. Thinking, "What good deed should be done here?"
तब भगवान विष्णु ने देवताओं की पूरी सेना को देखा, उनकी इंद्रियाँ और मन उत्तेजित थे, असुरों और राक्षसों के साथ भ्रम में थे। सोच रहा था, "यहाँ कौन सा अच्छा काम करना चाहिए?"

स नामृष्यत तं क्षेपमवैक्षत च पावकिम्
स प्रहस्य विशुद्धात्मा शक्तिं प्रज्वलितां तदा
कम्पयामास सव्येन पाणिना पुरुषोत्तमः
He did not tolerate that insult and looked at the son of Pavaka. The Supreme Being, with a pure soul, laughed and then with his left hand, shook the blazing spear.
उनसे वह अपमान सहन नहीं हुआ और उन्होंने पावक पुत्र की ओर देखा। पवित्र आत्मा वाले परमपुरुष हँसे और फिर अपने बाएँ हाथ से धधकते हुए भाले को हिलाया।
Where, having gone to the northern direction, the invincible bull-bannered one, O son, always performed austerities at the side of the king of mountains.
हे पुत्र, उत्तर दिशा में जाकर वह अजेय वृषभधारी सदा पर्वतों के राजा के पास तपस्या करता रहता था।

पावकेन परिक्षिप्तो दीप्यता तस्य चाश्रमः
आदित्यबन्धनं नाम दुर्धर्षमकृतात्मभिः
The hermitage of that (sage) was surrounded by fire and was burning. It was called "the binding of the sun", difficult to be approached by those who have not purified their souls.
उस (ऋषि) का आश्रम आग से घिरा हुआ था और जल रहा था। इसे "सूर्य का बंधन" कहा जाता था, उन लोगों के लिए इस तक पहुंचना कठिन था जिन्होंने अपनी आत्मा को शुद्ध नहीं किया है।

न तत्र शक्यते गन्तुं यक्षराक्षसदानवैः
दशयोजनविस्तारमग्निज्वालासमावृतम्
It cannot be reached by yakshas, rakshasas, or danavas. It is ten yojanas wide and surrounded by a blazing fire.
इस तक यक्ष, राक्षस या दानव नहीं पहुंच सकते। यह दस योजन चौड़ा है और धधकती आग से घिरा हुआ है।

The glorious, powerful Fire God himself stands there, pacifying all obstacles for the wise Mahadeva.
बुद्धिमान महादेव के लिए सभी बाधाओं को शांत करते हुए, गौरवशाली, शक्तिशाली अग्नि देवता स्वयं वहां खड़े हैं।

दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं हि पादेनैकेन तिष्ठतः
देवान्संतापयंस्तत्र महादेवो धृतव्रतः
The great god, who was firm in his vows, stood on one foot for a thousand divine years, tormenting the gods.
महान देवता, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा में दृढ़ थे, देवताओं को पीड़ा देते हुए एक हजार दिव्य वर्षों तक एक पैर पर खड़े रहे।
Having taken up the northern direction, the wise son of Parāśara, the great ascetic Vyāsa, on a secluded mountain slope, taught the Vedas to his disciples.
उत्तर दिशा की ओर बढ़ते हुए, पराशर के बुद्धिमान पुत्र, महान तपस्वी व्यास ने एक एकांत पहाड़ी ढलान पर अपने शिष्यों को वेदों की शिक्षा दी।

सुमन्तुं च महाभागं वैशंपायनमेव च
जैमिनिं च महाप्राज्ञं पैलं चापि तपस्विनम्
Sumantu, the highly fortunate Vaishmapayana, the highly intelligent Jaimini, and the ascetic Paila,
सुमन्तु, अत्यंत भाग्यशाली वैश्मापायन, अत्यंत बुद्धिमान जैमिनी, और तपस्वी पैल,
Surrounded by these disciples, the great ascetic Vyasa was seated. There he saw the auspicious hermitage of his excellent father, like the sun in the sky, the pure-souled son of Aranemi.
इन शिष्यों से घिरे हुए, महान तपस्वी व्यास बैठे थे। वहाँ उसने अपने उत्कृष्ट पिता, आकाश में सूर्य के समान, पवित्र आत्मा वाले अरनेमि के पुत्र का शुभ आश्रम देखा।
Having heard the words of his disciples, Vyasa, the knower of the truth of the meaning of the Vedas, the intelligent son of Parashara, the thinker of the welfare of the next world, spoke to his disciples, the one with the nature of Dharma, words that were righteous and conducive to welfare.
अपने शिष्यों की बातें सुनकर, वेदों के अर्थ के सत्य को जानने वाले, पराशर के बुद्धिमान पुत्र, परलोक के कल्याण के विचारक व्यास ने अपने शिष्यों से, धर्म के स्वभाव वाले, धार्मिक और कल्याण के लिए अनुकूल शब्द बोले।

ब्राह्मणाय सदा देयं ब्रह्म शुश्रूषवे भवेत्
ब्रह्मलोके निवासं यो ध्रुवं समभिकाङ्क्षति
It should always be given to a brahmin who is devoted to the study of the Vedas. He who certainly desires to dwell in the world of Brahma,
इसे सदैव वेदों के अध्ययन में समर्पित ब्राह्मण को ही देना चाहिए। जो निश्चय ही ब्रह्मलोक में निवास करना चाहता है,
May you all be prosperous. May this Veda be expanded. It should not be given to a non-disciple, to one without vows, or to one who has not purified himself.
आप सभी समृद्ध रहें. इस वेद का विस्तार हो। इसे किसी गैर-शिष्य को, बिना प्रतिज्ञा वाले को या जिसने खुद को शुद्ध नहीं किया है उसे नहीं दिया जाना चाहिए।
