वैशंपायन उवाच अर्जुनस्य वचः श्रुत्वा नकुलो वाक्यमब्रवीत् राजानमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य सर्वधर्मभृतां वरम्

Vaiśampāyana said: On hearing Arjuna's words, Nākula glanced towards the king, who was supreme among those who upheld all forms of dharma.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: अर्जुन के शब्दों को सुनकर, नकुल ने राजा की ओर देखा, जो सभी प्रकार के धर्म को कायम रखने वालों में सर्वोच्च थे।

अनुरुध्य महाप्राज्ञो भ्रातुश्चित्तमरिंदमः व्यूढोरस्को महाबाहुस्ताम्रास्यो मितभाषिता

The immensely wise one was broad in the chest and mighty-armed. His eyes were coppery red and he was temperate in speech. The scorcher of enemies spoke these words to his brother.

अत्यंत बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति की छाती चौड़ी थी और वह शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाला था। उसकी आंखें तांबे जैसी लाल थीं और वह बोलने में संयमी था। शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले ने अपने भाई से ये बातें कहीं।

विशाखयूपे देवानां सर्वेषामग्नयश्चिताः तस्माद्विद्धि महाराज देवान्कर्मपथि स्थितान्

"The gods established their fires in Viśākhayūpa. O great king! Know that the gods decided to base themselves on action.

"देवताओं ने विशाखयूप में अपनी अग्नि स्थापित की। हे महान राजा! जान लें कि देवताओं ने खुद को कर्म पर आधारित करने का फैसला किया है।

अनास्तिकानास्तिकानां प्राणदाः पितरश्च ये तेऽपि कर्मैव कुर्वन्ति विधिं पश्यस्व पार्थिव वेदवादापविद्धांस्तु तान्विद्धि भृशनास्तिकान्

O king! The ancestors gave life to both believers and non-believers. However, consider that they performed deeds in accordance with the prescribed rites. Know that those who censure the Veda-s have been dislodged and are extreme non-believers.

हे राजा! पूर्वजों ने विश्वासियों और अविश्वासियों दोनों को जीवन दिया। हालाँकि, इस बात पर विचार करें कि उन्होंने निर्धारित संस्कारों के अनुसार कार्य किया। जो लोग वेदों की निन्दा करते हैं, वे धर्मच्युत हो गये हैं और घोर अविश्वासी हैं, यह जान लो।

न हि वेदोक्तमुत्सृज्य विप्रः सर्वेषु कर्मसु देवयानेन नाकस्य पृष्ठमाप्नोति भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! A brāhmaṇa who abandons what is stated in the Veda-s, despite all his action, does not attain the path of the gods and the vault of heaven.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! जो ब्राह्मण अपने सभी कार्यों के बावजूद वेदों में कही गई बातों को त्याग देता है, उसे देवताओं का मार्ग और स्वर्ग की प्राप्ति नहीं होती है।

अत्याश्रमानयं सर्वानित्याहुर्वेदनिश्चयाः ब्राह्मणाः श्रुतिसंपन्नास्तान्निबोध जनाधिप

O lord of men! There are brāhmana-s who are learned and have carefully determined everything stated in the Veda-s. Listen. They say that this is the best stage of life.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! ऐसे ब्राह्मण हैं जो विद्वान हैं और उन्होंने वेदों में कही गई हर बात का सावधानीपूर्वक निर्धारण किया है। सुनना। उनका कहना है कि ये जिंदगी का सबसे बेहतरीन पड़ाव है.

वित्तानि धर्मलब्धानि क्रतुमुख्येष्ववासृजन् कृतात्मसु महाराज स वै त्यागी स्मृतो नरः

Wealth must be acquired in accordance with dharma and must be given away in the best of sacrifices. O great king! A man who thus perfects his soul is said to be one who truly renounces.

धन धर्म के अनुसार अर्जित किया जाना चाहिए और सर्वोत्तम यज्ञों में दान किया जाना चाहिए। हे महान राजा! जो व्यक्ति इस प्रकार अपनी आत्मा को पूर्ण बनाता है, उसे वास्तव में त्याग करने वाला कहा जाता है।

अनवेक्ष्य सुखादानं तथैवोर्ध्वं प्रतिष्ठितः आत्मत्यागी महाराज स त्यागी तामसः प्रभो

However, a person who ignores this source of happiness is established on a higher plane, in the sense that he abandons his own self. O great king! O lord! That is a tamasā kind of renouncing.

हालाँकि, जो व्यक्ति खुशी के इस स्रोत की उपेक्षा करता है, वह उच्च स्तर पर स्थापित हो जाता है, इस अर्थ में कि वह स्वयं को त्याग देता है। हे महान राजा! हे भगवान! वह एक प्रकार का तमसा त्याग है ।

अनिकेतः परिपतन्वृक्षमूलाश्रयो मुनिः अपाचकः सदा योगी स त्यागी पार्थ भिक्षुकः

There may be a sage who does not have an abode. He roams around and finds refuge at the root of a tree. He does not cook and is always engaged in yoga. O Pārtha! He is one who renounces, but is a mendicant.

ऐसा कोई साधु हो सकता है जिसका कोई ठिकाना न हो। वह इधर-उधर घूमता है और एक पेड़ की जड़ में शरण पाता है। वह खाना नहीं बनाते और हमेशा योगा में लगे रहते हैं. हे पार्थ! वह त्याग करने वाला है, परंतु भिक्षुक है।

क्रोधहर्षावनादृत्य पैशुन्यं च विशां पते विप्रो वेदानधीते यः स त्यागी गुरुपूजकः

O lord of the earth! There may be a brāhmaṇa who disregards anger and delight and does not indulge in passions. He studies the Veda-s. But such a person who renounces only serves his preceptor.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! ऐसा कोई ब्राह्मण हो सकता है जो क्रोध और प्रसन्नता की उपेक्षा करता हो और वासनाओं में लिप्त नहीं होता हो। वह वेदों का अध्ययन करता है। परंतु त्याग करने वाला व्यक्ति केवल अपने गुरु की सेवा करता है।

आश्रमांस्तुलया सर्वान्धृतानाहुर्मनीषिणः एकतस्ते त्रयो राजन्गृहस्थाश्रम एकतः

O king! The learned ones have considered all the āśrama-s on a scale and have said that three of them on one side are equal to the stage of being a householder on the other.

हे राजा! विद्वानों ने सभी आश्रमों को एक पैमाने पर माना है और कहा है कि उनमें से एक तरफ के तीन आश्रम दूसरी तरफ गृहस्थ होने की अवस्था के बराबर हैं।

समीक्षते तु योऽर्थं वै कामं स्वर्गं च भारत अयं पन्था महर्षीणामियं लोकविदां गतिः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having considered, the maharṣi-s, who know about the objectives of the worlds, determined that this was the path towards artha, kāmā and heaven.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! विचार करने के बाद, महर्षियों ने, जो संसार के उद्देश्यों को जानते हैं, यह निर्धारित किया कि यह अर्थ, काम और स्वर्ग की ओर जाने का मार्ग है।

इति यः कुरुते भावं स त्यागी भरतर्षभ न यः परित्यज्य गृहान्वनमेति विमूढवत्

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Someone who acts in accordance with these sentiments is one who truly renounces. Like a foolish person, he does not abandon his house and head for the forest.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जो व्यक्ति इन भावनाओं के अनुरूप कार्य करता है वही वास्तव में त्याग करता है। वह मूर्ख व्यक्ति की तरह अपना घर छोड़कर जंगल की ओर नहीं जाता।

यदा कामान्समीक्षेत धर्मवैतंसिकोऽनृजुः अथैनं मृत्युपाशेन कण्ठे बध्नाति मृत्युराट्

There are also those false ones, who are like bird-catchers trying to catch dharma. But because they cannot get rid of desire, the king of death binds them around the neck with the noose of death.

ऐसे झूठे लोग भी हैं, जो पक्षी पकड़ने वालों की तरह धर्म को पकड़ने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। परन्तु चूँकि वे इच्छा से छुटकारा नहीं पा सकते, इसलिए मृत्यु का राजा उनके गले में मृत्यु का पाश डाल देता है।

अभिमानकृतं कर्म नैतत्फलवदुच्यते त्यागयुक्तं महाराज सर्वमेव महाफलम्

It is said that action done through pride does not lead to fruits.

ऐसा कहा जाता है कि अभिमान से किए गए कार्य का फल नहीं मिलता है।

शमो दमस्तपो दानं सत्यं शौचमथार्जवम् यज्ञो धृतिश्च धर्मश्च नित्यमार्षो विधिः स्मृतः

Tranquility, self-control, austerities, generosity, truthfulness, cleanliness, honesty, sacrifices, fortitude and dharma are always spoken of as the rites followed by riṣi-s.

शांति, आत्म-नियंत्रण, तपस्या, उदारता, सच्चाई, स्वच्छता, ईमानदारी, बलिदान, धैर्य और धर्म को हमेशा ऋषियों द्वारा अपनाए जाने वाले संस्कारों के रूप में बताया जाता है।

पितृदेवातिथिकृते समारम्भोऽत्र शस्यते अत्रैव हि महाराज त्रिवर्गः केवलं फलम्

Acts undertaken for the sake of gods, ancestors and guests are praised. O great king! In this mode of life, the three fruits are obtained.

देवताओं, पितरों तथा अतिथियों के निमित्त किये गये कार्यों की प्रशंसा | हे महान राजा! इस जीवन शैली में तीन फल प्राप्त होते हैं।

एतस्मिन्वर्तमानस्य विधौ विप्रनिषेविते त्यागिनः प्रसृतस्येह नोच्छित्तिर्विद्यते क्वचित्

One who follows this, observed by the brāhmana-s, and does not deviate, is one who renounces and never confronts catastrophe in anything.

जो व्यक्ति ब्राह्मणों द्वारा पालन किये गये इस नियम का पालन करता है और विचलित नहीं होता, वह त्याग करने वाला होता है और उसे कभी भी किसी भी चीज में विपत्ति का सामना नहीं करना पड़ता है।

असृजद्धि प्रजा राजन्प्रजापतिरकल्मषः मां यक्ष्यन्तीति शान्तात्मा यज्ञैर्विविधदक्षिणैः

O king! The unblemished Prajāpati created beings. The one who is tranquil in his soul thought that they would worship him with sacrifices and perform sacrifices, with many kinds of gifts.

हे राजा! निष्कलंक प्रजापति ने प्राणियों की रचना की। जो मन में शान्त है, उसने सोचा कि वे यज्ञ करके उसकी पूजा करेंगे, नाना प्रकार के दान देकर यज्ञ करेंगे।

वीरुधश्चैव वृक्षांश्च यज्ञार्थं च तथौषधीः पशूंश्चैव तथा मेध्यान्यज्ञार्थानि हवींषि च

Creepers, trees, herbs, animals fit to be sacrificed and oblations and other objects required for sacrifices were also created for the sake of sacrifices.

लताएँ, पेड़, जड़ी-बूटियाँ, बलि देने योग्य जानवर और बलि के लिए आवश्यक हव्य और अन्य वस्तुएँ भी बलि के लिए बनाई गईं।

गृहस्थाश्रमिणस्तच्च यज्ञकर्म विरोधकम् तस्माद्गार्हस्थ्यमेवेह दुष्करं दुर्लभं तथा

The task of performing a sacrifice constrains those who are in the householder stage. That is the reason the status of being a householder is a difficult task to perform and is not easy to obtain.

गृहस्थ अवस्था वालों को यज्ञ का कार्य विवश करता है। यही कारण है कि गृहस्थ होने का दर्जा निभाना एक कठिन कार्य है और इसे प्राप्त करना आसान नहीं है।

तत्संप्राप्य गृहस्था ये पशुधान्यसमन्विताः न यजन्ते महाराज शाश्वतं तेषु किल्बिषम्

O great king! There are householders who possess animals and grain, but do not sacrifice. Eternal sin awaits them.

हे महान राजा! ऐसे गृहस्थ भी होते हैं जिनके पास पशु और अनाज तो होता है, लेकिन वे बलि नहीं चढ़ाते। शाश्वत पाप उनका इंतजार कर रहा है।

स्वाध्याययज्ञा ऋषयो ज्ञानयज्ञास्तथापरे अथापरे महायज्ञान्मनसैव वितन्वते

Some riṣi-s say that studying is a sacrifice, others that knowledge is a sacrifice.There are others who perform great sacrifices in their minds.

कुछ ऋषि कहते हैं कि अध्ययन करना एक यज्ञ है, अन्य कहते हैं कि ज्ञान एक यज्ञ है। कुछ ऐसे भी हैं जो अपने मन में महान यज्ञ करते हैं।

एवं दानसमाधानं मार्गमातिष्ठतो नृप द्विजातेर्ब्रह्मभूतस्य स्पृहयन्ति दिवौकसः

O king! There are brāhmana-s who become one with the brāhman by adhering to the path that involves the act of giving. The residents of heaven envy them.

हे राजा! ऐसे ब्राह्मण हैं जो उस मार्ग का पालन करके ब्राह्मण के साथ एक हो जाते हैं जिसमें देने का कार्य शामिल है। स्वर्गवासी उनसे ईर्ष्या करते हैं।

स रत्नानि विचित्राणि संभृतानि ततस्ततः मखेष्वनभिसंत्यज्य नास्तिक्यमभिजल्पसि कुटुम्बमास्थिते त्यागं न पश्यामि नराधिप

O lord of men! There are many kinds of jewels that have been collected. By not giving them away in a sacrifice, you are thinking like a nonbeliever.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! अनेक प्रकार के रत्न एकत्रित किये गये हैं। उन्हें बलिदान में न देकर आप एक अविश्वासी की तरह सोच रहे हैं।

राजसूयाश्वमेधेषु सर्वमेधेषु वा पुनः य चान्ये क्रतवस्तात ब्राह्मणैरभिपूजिताः तैर्यजस्व महाराज शक्रो देवपतिर्यथा

For someone who has a family, I do not see any renouncement except through aśvamedha, rājasūya or sarvamedha. O father! There are also other sacrifices revered by brāhmana-s. O great king! Perform those, like Śākra, the lord of the gods.

जिसके पास परिवार है, उसके लिए मैं अश्वमेध, राजसूय या सर्वमेध के अलावा कोई त्याग नहीं देखता। हे पिता! ब्राह्मणों द्वारा पूजनीय अन्य बलिदान भी हैं। हे महान राजा! देवताओं के स्वामी, शक्र की तरह उनका पालन करें ।

राज्ञः प्रमाददोषेण दस्युभिः परिमुष्यताम् अशरण्यः प्रजानां यः स राजा कलिरुच्यते

When a king commits the sin of being distracted, bandits plunder. When the subjects have no refuge, the king is said to be overcome by kālī.

जब कोई राजा विचलित होने का पाप करता है तो डाकू लूटपाट करते हैं। जब प्रजा को कोई शरण नहीं मिलती, तो ऐसा कहा जाता है कि राजा काली द्वारा पराजित हो जाता है।

अश्वान्गाश्चैव दासीश्च करेणूश्च स्वलंकृताः ग्रामाञ्जनपदांश्चैव क्षेत्राणि च गृहाणि च

Horses, cattle, servant maids, adorned she-elephants, villages, countries, fields and houses -

घोड़े, मवेशी, नौकर-चाकरियाँ, सजी-धजी हथिनियाँ, गाँव, देश, खेत और घर -

अप्रदाय द्विजातिभ्यो मात्सर्याविष्टचेतसः वयं ते राजकलयो भविष्यामो विशां पते

O lord of the earth! If we do not give these away to brāhmana-s, our consciousness will be destroyed by selfishness and we will be like kings overcome by kālī.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यदि हम इन्हें ब्राह्मणों को नहीं देते हैं, तो हमारी चेतना स्वार्थ से नष्ट हो जाएगी और हम कलि से पराजित राजाओं की तरह हो जाएंगे।

अदातारोऽशरण्याश्च राजकिल्बिषभागिनः दुःखानामेव भोक्तारो न सुखानां कदाचन

Kings who do not give and do not offer refuge obtain their share of sin. They enjoy unhappiness, never happiness.

जो राजा शरण नहीं देते और शरण नहीं देते वे पाप का भागी बनते हैं। वे दुःख का आनंद लेते हैं, सुख का कभी नहीं।

अनिष्ट्वा च महायज्ञैरकृत्वा च पितृस्वधाम् तीर्थेष्वनभिसंत्यज्य प्रव्रजिष्यसि चेदथ

If you do not perform a great sacrifice, if you do not sacrifice to the ancestors, if you do not bathe in the waters of tīrtha-s and instead depart,

यदि तुम महान यज्ञ नहीं करते हो, यदि तुम पितरों को तर्पण नहीं देते हो, यदि तुम तीर्थों के जल में स्नान नहीं करते हो और चले जाते हो,

छिन्नाभ्रमिव गन्तासि विलयं मारुतेरितम् लोकयोरुभयोर्भ्रष्टो ह्यन्तराले व्यवस्थितः

to roam around, you will face destruction, like a cloud that is dispersed and blown away by the wind. You will be dislodged from both the worlds and be stationed between them.

चारों ओर घूमने के लिए, तुम्हें बादल की तरह विनाश का सामना करना पड़ेगा जो तितर-बितर हो जाता है और हवा से उड़ जाता है। तुम दोनों दुनियाओं से बेदखल हो जाओगे और उनके बीच स्थित हो जाओगे।

अन्तर्बहिश्च यत्किंचिन्मनोव्यासङ्गकारकम् परित्यज्य भवेत्त्यागी न यो हित्वा प्रतिष्ठते

One who casts aside all attachment in his mind, internal and external, is one who truly renounces, not one who simply goes away.

जो अपने मन में, आंतरिक और बाह्य, सभी प्रकार के लगाव को त्याग देता है, वह वास्तव में त्याग करता है, वह नहीं जो बस चला जाता है।

एतस्मिन्वर्तमानस्य विधौ विप्रनिषेविते ब्राह्मणस्य महाराज नोच्छित्तिर्विद्यते क्वचित्

O great king! A brāhmaṇa who follows these rites prescribed for brāhmaṇas is never dislodged.

हे महान राजा! जो ब्राह्मण ब्राह्मणों के लिए निर्धारित इन संस्कारों का पालन करता है, वह कभी निराश नहीं होता।

निहत्य शत्रूंस्तरसा समृद्धा;न्शक्रो यथा दैत्यबलानि संख्ये कः पार्थ शोचेन्निरतः स्वधर्मे; पूर्वैः स्मृते पार्थिव शिष्टजुष्टे

The prosperous enemies have been swiftly slain in the battle, like the army of the daitya-s against Śākra. O Pārtha! Devoted to your own dharma, why should you grieve? O king! This is what has earlier been recommended in the sacred texts and practised by the righteous.

युद्ध में समृद्ध शत्रु तेजी से मारे गए, जैसे शक्र के विरुद्ध दैत्यों की सेना। हे पार्थ! अपने धर्म के प्रति समर्पित होकर तुम्हें शोक क्यों करना चाहिए? हे राजा! यह वही है जिसकी पहले पवित्र ग्रंथों में अनुशंसा की गई थी और धर्मी लोगों द्वारा इसका अभ्यास किया गया था।

क्षात्रेण धर्मेण पराक्रमेण; जित्वा महीं मन्त्रविद्भ्यः प्रदाय नाकस्य पृष्ठेऽसि नरेन्द्र गन्ता; न शोचितव्यं भवताद्य पार्थ

You have conquered the earth through the valour and dharma of kṣatriya-s. O Indra among men! You know about mantra-s! Give it away and you will ascend the vault of heaven. O Pārtha! You should not sorrow now."

तुमने क्षत्रियों के पराक्रम और धर्म से पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है। हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! आप मंत्रों के बारे में जानते हैं! इसे दे दो और तुम स्वर्ग की तिजोरी पर चढ़ जाओगे। हे पार्थ! तुम्हें अब दुःख नहीं करना चाहिए।”
