युधिष्ठिर उवाच वेदाहं तात शास्त्राणि अपराणि पराणि च उभयं वेदवचनं कुरु कर्म त्यजेति च

Yudhiṣṭhira said, "O son! I know about the sacred texts and about this world and the next. The words of the Veda-s ask one to act and also ask one to renounce action.

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा, "हे पुत्र! मैं पवित्र ग्रंथों के बारे में और इस दुनिया और अगले के बारे में जानता हूं। वेदों के शब्द व्यक्ति को कर्म करने के लिए कहते हैं और कर्म का त्याग करने के लिए भी कहते हैं।

आकुलानि च शास्त्राणि हेतुभिश्चित्रितानि च निश्चयश्चैव यन्मात्रो वेदाहं तं यथाविधि

Though the sacred texts give reasons, they cause confusion. I know what has been certainly prescribed, following the rites.

हालाँकि पवित्र ग्रंथ कारण बताते हैं, लेकिन वे भ्रम पैदा करते हैं। मैं जानता हूं कि संस्कारों का पालन करते हुए निश्चित रूप से क्या निर्धारित किया गया है।

त्वं तु केवलमस्त्रज्ञो वीरव्रतमनुष्ठितः शास्त्रार्थं तत्त्वतो गन्तुं न समर्थः कथंचन

You are only skilled in the use of weapons and base yourself on the conduct of heroes. You are incapable of comprehending the true meaning of the sacred texts.

आप केवल अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में ही कुशल हैं और स्वयं को वीरों के आचरण पर आधारित करते हैं। आप पवित्र ग्रंथों का सही अर्थ समझने में असमर्थ हैं।

शास्त्रार्थसूक्ष्मदर्शी यो धर्मनिश्चयकोविदः तेनाप्येवं न वाच्योऽहं यदि धर्मं प्रपश्यसि

Those who are learned can determine the certainty of dharma. Those who know subtleties can appreciate the true purport of the sacred texts. If you had actually seen the nature of dharma, you would not have spoken those words to me.

जो विद्वान हैं वे धर्म की निश्चितता निर्धारित कर सकते हैं। जो लोग बारीकियों को जानते हैं वे पवित्र ग्रंथों के वास्तविक अर्थ की सराहना कर सकते हैं। यदि आपने वास्तव में धर्म का स्वरूप देखा होता, तो आपने मुझसे ये शब्द नहीं कहे होते।

भ्रातृसौहृदमास्थाय यदुक्तं वचनं त्वया न्याय्यं युक्तं च कौन्तेय प्रीतोऽहं तेन तेऽर्जुन

But those words were spoken by you out of fraternal affection towards a brother. O Kaunteya! O Arjuna! Your words are full of reason and I am pleased with you.

परन्तु वे शब्द तुमने एक भाई के प्रति भ्रातृ-स्नेह के कारण कहे थे। हे कौन्तेय! हे अर्जुन! आपके शब्द तर्क से भरे हैं और मैं आपसे प्रसन्न हूं।

युद्धधर्मेषु सर्वेषु क्रियाणां नैपुणेषु च न त्वया सदृशः कश्चित्त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते

In the three worlds, there is no one who is your equal amongst those who know the dharma of fighting and are accomplished in all those acts.

तीनों लोकों में जो लोग युद्ध के धर्म को जानते हैं और उन सभी कार्यों में निपुण हैं, उनमें आपके समान कोई नहीं है।

धर्मसूक्ष्मं तु यद्वाक्यं तत्र दुष्प्रतरं त्वया धनंजय न मे बुद्धिमभिशङ्कितुमर्हसि

But the words that I am speaking about the subtlety of dharma will be difficult for you to understand. O Dhanañjayā! You should not doubt my intelligence.

लेकिन मैं धर्म की सूक्ष्मता के बारे में जो शब्द बोल रहा हूं, उन्हें समझना आपके लिए कठिन होगा। हे धनंजय! आपको मेरी बुद्धि पर संदेह नहीं करना चाहिए.

युद्धशास्त्रविदेव त्वं न वृद्धाः सेवितास्त्वया समासविस्तरविदां न तेषां वेत्सि निश्चयम्

You know about the science of fighting, but you have not served the elders. You do not know about the conclusions of learned ones who have considered these in their entirety.

तुम युद्ध की विद्या तो जानते हो, परन्तु तुमने बड़ों की सेवा नहीं की। जिन विद्वानों ने इन पर समग्रता से विचार किया है, उनके निष्कर्षों के बारे में आप नहीं जानते।

तपस्त्यागो विधिरिति निश्चयस्तात धीमताम् परं परं ज्याय एषां सैषा नैःश्रेयसी गतिः

O son! Austerities, renunciation and ritual action—those intelligent ones who have determined the way to the supreme objective have said that each of these is superior to the preceding one.

हे वत्स तपस्या, त्याग और अनुष्ठान - जिन बुद्धिमान लोगों ने सर्वोच्च उद्देश्य का मार्ग निर्धारित किया है, उन्होंने कहा है कि इनमें से प्रत्येक पिछले एक से श्रेष्ठ है।

न त्वेतन्मन्यसे पार्थ न ज्यायोऽस्ति धनादिति अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यथा नैतत्प्रधानतः

O Pārtha! You are wrong when you think that there is nothing superior to wealth. I will explain to you why it is not the most important.

हे पार्थ! आप गलत हैं जब आप सोचते हैं कि धन से बढ़कर कुछ नहीं है। मैं आपको समझाऊंगा कि यह सबसे महत्वपूर्ण क्यों नहीं है।

तपःस्वाध्यायशीला हि दृश्यन्ते धार्मिका जनाः ऋषयस्तपसा युक्ता येषां लोकाः सनातनाः

People who follow dharma are seen to follow austerities and practice studying. The riṣi-s who attain eternal worlds observe austerities.

जो लोग धर्म का पालन करते हैं उन्हें तपस्या और अध्ययन का अभ्यास करते देखा जाता है। जो ऋषि शाश्वत लोकों को प्राप्त करते हैं वे तपस्या करते हैं।

अजातश्मश्रवो धीरास्तथान्ये वनवासिनः अनन्ता अधना एव स्वाध्यायेन दिवं गताः

There are those who have not grown beards and other wise ones who dwell in the forest. Though they are without riches, because of their studies, they go to the infinite heaven.

ऐसे लोग हैं जिनकी दाढ़ी नहीं बढ़ी है और अन्य बुद्धिमान लोग हैं जो जंगल में रहते हैं। यद्यपि वे धनहीन हैं, फिर भी अपनी पढ़ाई के कारण वे अनंत स्वर्ग में जाते हैं।

उत्तरेण तु पन्थानमार्या विषयनिग्रहात् अबुद्धिजं तमस्त्यक्त्वा लोकांस्त्यागवतां गताः

There are āryā-s who abandon the darkness that comes from lack of intelligence and disassociate themselves from objects. They follow the northern path and go to the worlds meant for those who renounce.

ऐसे आर्य हैं जो बुद्धि की कमी से उत्पन्न अंधकार को त्याग देते हैं और खुद को वस्तुओं से अलग कर लेते हैं। वे उत्तरी मार्ग का अनुसरण करते हैं और उन लोकों में जाते हैं जो त्याग करने वालों के लिए हैं।

दक्षिणेन तु पन्थानं यं भास्वन्तं प्रपश्यसि एते क्रियावतां लोका ये श्मशानानि भेजिरे

You see that the southern path is radiant. This is the world of those who follow action, but is a cremation ground.

आप देखते हैं कि दक्षिणी मार्ग दीप्तिमान है। यह कर्म पर चलने वालों की दुनिया है, लेकिन श्मशान है।

अनिर्देश्या गतिः सा तु यां प्रपश्यन्ति मोक्षिणः तस्मात्त्यागः प्रधानेष्टः स तु दुःखः प्रवेदितुम्

The path seen by those who desire salvation cannot be described. That is the reason renunciation is the most important, though it can only be explained with difficulty.

मोक्ष की इच्छा रखने वालों ने जो मार्ग देखा है उसका वर्णन नहीं किया जा सकता। यही कारण है कि त्याग सबसे महत्वपूर्ण है, हालाँकि इसे केवल कठिनाई से ही समझाया जा सकता है।

अनुसृत्य तु शास्त्राणि कवयः समवस्थिताः अपीह स्यादपीह स्यात्सारासारदिदृक्षया

Wise ones have followed the sacred texts, wishing to determine what is real and what is unreal, what is here and what is there.

बुद्धिमान लोगों ने पवित्र ग्रंथों का अनुसरण किया है, यह निर्धारित करने की इच्छा रखते हुए कि क्या वास्तविक है और क्या असत्य है, यहां क्या है और वहां क्या है।

वेदवादानतिक्रम्य शास्त्राण्यारण्यकानि च विपाट्य कदलीस्कन्धं सारं ददृशिरे न ते

They have gone through the words of the Veda-s and the sacred texts that are the Āraṇyaka-s. They have dissected them like the trunk of a plantain tree, but have not been able to see the essence.

उन्होंने वेदों और आरण्यक ग्रंथों के शब्दों का अध्ययन किया है। उन्होंने उन्हें केले के तने की भाँति विच्छेदित किया है, परन्तु सार नहीं देख सके हैं।

अथैकान्तव्युदासेन शरीरे पञ्चभौतिके इच्छाद्वेषसमायुक्तमात्मानं प्राहुरिङ्गितैः

Some have attentively rejected and have decided that the ātman, in this body with the five elements, has the attributes of desire and aversion.

कुछ लोगों ने ध्यानपूर्वक अस्वीकार कर दिया है और निर्णय लिया है कि पांच तत्वों वाले इस शरीर में आत्मा में इच्छा और घृणा के गुण हैं।

अग्राह्यश्चक्षुषा सोऽपि अनिर्देश्यं च तद्गिरा कर्महेतुपुरस्कारं भूतेषु परिवर्तते

It cannot be seen by the eye. It cannot be expressed through words. Being driven by kārma, it circulates in beings.

इसे आँख से नहीं देखा जा सकता. इसे शब्दों के माध्यम से व्यक्त नहीं किया जा सकता. कर्म से संचालित होने के कारण यह प्राणियों में प्रसारित होता है।

कल्याणगोचरं कृत्वा मनस्तृष्णां निगृह्य च कर्मसंततिमुत्सृज्य स्यान्निरालम्बनः सुखी

After having realized what is most beneficial, withdrawing all thirst from the mind and casting aside all forms of action, one becomes independent and happy.

यह समझने के बाद कि सबसे अधिक लाभकारी क्या है, मन से सारी प्यास हटाकर और सभी प्रकार के कर्मों को त्यागकर, व्यक्ति स्वतंत्र और खुश हो जाता है।

अस्मिन्नेवं सूक्ष्मगम्ये मार्गे सद्भिर्निषेविते कथमर्थमनर्थाढ्यमर्जुन त्वं प्रशंससि

This is the subtle path traversed by virtuous ones. O Arjuna! This being the case, why are you praising wealth, which is harmful?

यह वह सूक्ष्म मार्ग है जिस पर सद्गुणी लोग चलते हैं। हे अर्जुन! ऐसा होने पर, आप धन की प्रशंसा क्यों कर रहे हैं, जो हानिकारक है?

पूर्वशास्त्रविदो ह्येवं जनाः पश्यन्ति भारत क्रियासु निरता नित्यं दाने यज्ञे च कर्मणि

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In earlier times, there were people who could see and were learned in the sacred texts. They were always devoted to constant action, donations, sacrifice and deeds.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! पहले के समय में, ऐसे लोग थे जो पवित्र ग्रंथों को देख सकते थे और सीख सकते थे। वे सदैव सतत कर्म, दान, त्याग और कर्म में समर्पित रहते थे।

भवन्ति सुदुरावर्ता हेतुमन्तोऽपि पण्डिताः दृढपूर्वश्रुता मूढा नैतदस्तीति वादिनः

They were learned and provided reasons and it was difficult to dissuade them. But there are foolish ones who rigidly adhere to those earlier texts. They say that it does not exist.

उन्हें समझाया गया और कारण बताए गए और उन्हें मना करना मुश्किल था। लेकिन ऐसे मूर्ख लोग भी हैं जो कठोरता से उन पहले के ग्रंथों का पालन करते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि इसका अस्तित्व ही नहीं है.

अमृतस्यावमन्तारो वक्तारो जनसंसदि चरन्ति वसुधां कृत्स्नां वावदूका बहुश्रुताः

Those eloquent ones disregard what is immortal. They roam around the entire earth and speak in assemblies. Though they are extremely learned, they talk a lot.

वे वाक्पटु लोग उस चीज़ की उपेक्षा करते हैं जो अमर है। वे सारी पृथ्वी पर घूमते और सभाओं में बोलते हैं। हालाँकि वे बहुत विद्वान हैं, फिर भी वे बहुत बातें करते हैं।

यान्वयं नाभिजानीमः कस्ताञ्ज्ञातुमिहार्हति एवं प्राज्ञान्सतश्चापि महतः शास्त्रवित्तमान्

If we do not recognize them, who else will? But there are extremely wise and intelligent and virtuous ones, wise in the store of the sacred texts.

अगर हम उन्हें नहीं पहचानेंगे तो और कौन पहचानेगा? लेकिन पवित्र ग्रंथों के भंडार में अत्यंत बुद्धिमान और बुद्धिमान और गुणी भी हैं।

तपसा महदाप्नोति बुद्ध्या वै विन्दते महत् त्यागेन सुखमाप्नोति सदा कौन्तेय धर्मवित्

They have great intelligence and perform great austerities. O Kaunteya! They follow dharma and always obtain happiness through renunciation.

उनके पास महान बुद्धि है और वे बड़ी तपस्या करते हैं। हे कौन्तेय! वे धर्म का पालन करते हैं और त्याग से सदैव सुख प्राप्त करते हैं।
