वैशंपायन उवाच अव्याहरति कौन्तेये धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे भ्रातॄणां ब्रुवतां तांस्तान्विविधान्वेदनिश्चयान्

Vaiśampāyana said: Kuntī's son, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, did not speak, while his brothers spoke many things about what the Veda-s had said.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: कुंती के पुत्र धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कुछ नहीं बोले, जबकि उनके भाइयों ने वेदों में कही गई बातों के बारे में बहुत सी बातें कहीं।

महाभिजनसंपन्ना श्रीमत्यायतलोचना अभ्यभाषत राजेन्द्रं द्रौपदी योषितां वरा

Draupadī, supreme among women, was beautiful. She had large eyes and was descended from an extremely noble family. She addressed the Indra among kings.

स्त्रियों में श्रेष्ठ द्रौपदी सुन्दरी थी। उसकी आँखें बड़ी थीं और वह एक अत्यंत कुलीन परिवार से आती थी। उसने राजाओं के बीच इन्द्र को सम्बोधित किया।

आसीनमृषभं राज्ञां भ्रातृभिः परिवारितम् सिंहशार्दूलसदृशैर्वारणैरिव यूथपम्

The king was seated like a bull, surrounded by his brothers. They were like lions and tigers and he was like the leader of a herd of elephants.

राजा बैल की भाँति अपने भाइयों से घिरा हुआ बैठा था। वे सिंह और बाघ के समान थे और वह हाथियों के झुण्ड के नेता के समान था।

अभिमानवती नित्यं विशेषेण युधिष्ठिरे लालिता सततं राज्ञा धर्मज्ञा धर्मदर्शिनी

She knew about dharma and could discern the nature of dharma. Though she was always cherished by the king, she was always somewhat haughty, especially towards Yudhiṣṭhira.

वह धर्म के बारे में जानती थी और धर्म की प्रकृति को समझ सकती थी। हालाँकि राजा उसे हमेशा प्यार करते थे, फिर भी वह हमेशा कुछ हद तक घमंडी रहती थी, खासकर युधिष्ठिर के प्रति।

आमन्त्र्य विपुलश्रोणी साम्ना परमवल्गुना भर्तारमभिसंप्रेक्ष्य ततो वचनमब्रवीत्

Having been invited, the wide-hipped and extremely beautiful one glanced towards her husband and spoke these gentle words.

आमंत्रित होने पर, चौड़े कूल्हों वाली और बेहद खूबसूरत महिला ने अपने पति की ओर देखा और ये कोमल शब्द बोले।

इमे ते भ्रातरः पार्थ शुष्यन्त स्तोकका इव वावाश्यमानास्तिष्ठन्ति न चैनानभिनन्दसे

"O Pārtha! These brothers of yours are as parched as stoka birds. They are stationed here and are warbling, but you do not pay them any attention.

"हे पार्थ! तुम्हारे ये भाई स्टोका पक्षियों के समान सूखे हुए हैं। वे यहाँ तैनात हैं और युद्ध कर रहे हैं, लेकिन तुम उन पर कोई ध्यान नहीं देते।

नन्दयैतान्महाराज मत्तानिव महाद्विपान् उपपन्नेन वाक्येन सततं दुःखभागिनः

O great king! They are like crazy and large elephants. Gladden them with appropriate words. They have always suffered from sorrows.

हे महान राजा! वे पागल और बड़े हाथियों की तरह हैं। उचित शब्दों से उन्हें प्रसन्न करें। वे सदैव दुःखों से पीड़ित रहते हैं।

कथं द्वैतवने राजन्पूर्वमुक्त्वा तथा वचः भ्रातॄनेतान्स्म सहिताञ्शीतवातातपार्दितान्

O king! Earlier, you were with your brothers in Dvaitavana and they were oppressed by the cold, the wind and the heat. Why did you speak such words to them?

हे राजा! पहले आप अपने भाइयों के साथ द्वैतवन में थे और वे सर्दी, हवा और गर्मी से पीड़ित थे। आपने उनसे ऐसे शब्द क्यों बोले?

वयं दुर्योधनं हत्वा मृधे भोक्ष्याम मेदिनीम् संपूर्णां सर्वकामानामाहवे विजयैषिणः

"Desiring victory in the encounter, we will slay Duryodhana in the battle and enjoy the entire earth, which is capable of granting every object of desire.

"मुकाबले में जीत की इच्छा रखते हुए, हम युद्ध में दुर्योधन को मार डालेंगे और पूरी पृथ्वी का आनंद लेंगे, जो हर इच्छा को पूरा करने में सक्षम है।

विरथांश्च रथान्कृत्वा निहत्य च महागजान् संस्तीर्य च रथैर्भूमिं ससादिभिररिंदमाः

O scorchers of enemies! We will deprive the rāṭha-s of their chariots and kill the mighty elephants. We will strew the field of battle with chariots.

हे शत्रुओं को झुलसाने वाले! हम रथियों को उनके रथों से वंचित कर देंगे और शक्तिशाली हाथियों को मार डालेंगे। हम युद्ध के मैदान को रथों से भर देंगे।

यजतां विविधैर्यज्ञैः समृद्धैराप्तदक्षिणैः वनवासकृतं दुःखं भविष्यति सुखाय नः

We will perform many grand sacrifices, at which a lot of gifts will be given away. Our sorrow of dwelling in the forest will become happiness."

हम बहुत से बड़े-बड़े यज्ञ करेंगे, जिनमें बहुत-से उपहार दिये जायेंगे। जंगल में रहने का हमारा दुःख सुख बन जायेगा।”

इत्येतानेवमुक्त्वा त्वं स्वयं धर्मभृतां वर कथमद्य पुनर्वीर विनिहंसि मनांस्युत

O supreme among those who uphold dharma! These were the words you yourself spoke then. O brave one! How can you then shatter their minds now?

हे धर्म का पालन करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! ये वे शब्द थे जो आपने स्वयं तब कहे थे। हे वीर! तो फिर अब आप उनके दिमाग को कैसे चकनाचूर कर सकते हैं?

न क्लीबो वसुधां भुङ्क्ते न क्लीबो धनमश्नुते न क्लीबस्य गृहे पुत्रा मत्स्याः पङ्क इवासते

A eunuch cannot enjoy the earth. A eunuch cannot obtain wealth. There cannot be sons in a eunuch's house, just as fish cannot exist in mud.

एक नपुंसक पृथ्वी का आनंद नहीं उठा सकता। किन्नर को धन की प्राप्ति नहीं हो सकती। जिस प्रकार कीचड़ में मछली नहीं रह सकती, उसी प्रकार किन्नर के घर में पुत्र नहीं हो सकते।

नादण्डः क्षत्रियो भाति नादण्डो भूतिमश्नुते नादण्डस्य प्रजा राज्ञः सुखमेधन्ति भारत

A kṣatriya without the staff of punishment does not shine. There is no prosperity without the staff of punishment. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Without the staff of punishment, a king's subjects do not obtain happiness.

दण्ड की छड़ी के बिना क्षत्रिय की चमक नहीं होती। दण्ड की लाठी के बिना कोई समृद्धि नहीं है। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! दण्ड के बिना राजा की प्रजा को सुख नहीं मिलता।

मित्रता सर्वभूतेषु दानमध्ययनं तपः ब्राह्मणस्यैष धर्मः स्यान्न राज्ञो राजसत्तम

O supreme among kings! Friendship towards all beings, donations, studying and austerities are dharma for a brāhmaṇa, not for a king.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! सभी प्राणियों के प्रति मित्रता, दान, अध्ययन और तपस्या ब्राह्मण के लिए धर्म हैं, राजा के लिए नहीं।

असतां प्रतिषेधश्च सतां च परिपालनम् एष राज्ञां परो धर्मः समरे चापलायनम्

The wicked must be countered. The virtuous must be protected. Together with not running away from a battle, this is the supreme dharma for kings.

दुष्टों का प्रतिकार किया जाना चाहिए। सद्गुणी की रक्षा होनी चाहिए। साथ ही युद्ध से न भागना यह राजाओं का परम धर्म है।

यस्मिन्क्षमा च क्रोधश्च दानादाने भयाभये निग्रहानुग्रहौ चोभौ स वै धर्मविदुच्यते

A person who possesses both forgiveness and anger, who gives and also takes, who frightens and also grants freedom from fear and who chastises and also rewards— such a person is said to know dharma.

जिस व्यक्ति में क्षमा और क्रोध दोनों हैं, जो देता भी है और लेता भी है, जो डराता भी है और भय से मुक्ति भी देता है तथा जो ताड़ना भी देता है और पुरस्कार भी देता है - ऐसा व्यक्ति धर्म को जानने वाला कहा जाता है।

न श्रुतेन न दानेन न सान्त्वेन न चेज्यया त्वयेयं पृथिवी लब्धा नोत्कोचेन तथाप्युत

You have not obtained the earth through learning, donations, conciliation, sacrifices or bribery, but through your own power.

तुमने यह पृथ्वी विद्या, दान, मेल-मिलाप, यज्ञ या रिश्वत से नहीं, बल्कि अपनी शक्ति से प्राप्त की है।

यत्तद्बलममित्राणां तथा वीरसमुद्यतम् हस्त्यश्वरथसंपन्नं त्रिभिरङ्गैर्महत्तरम्

The forces of the enemy had brave ones who were ready to strike, with elephants, horses and chariots. It was larger in three parts.

शत्रु की सेना में हाथी, घोड़े और रथों के साथ वीर लोग हमला करने के लिए तैयार थे। यह तीन भागों में बड़ा था।

रक्षितं द्रोणकर्णाभ्यामश्वत्थाम्ना कृपेण च तत्त्वया निहतं वीर तस्माद्भुङ्क्ष्व वसुंधराम्

It was protected by Droṇa, Karṇa, Aśvatthāma and Kṛpa. O brave one! It has been destroyed by you. Therefore, enjoy the earth.

इसकी रक्षा द्रोण, कर्ण, अश्वत्थामा और कृप ने की थी। हे वीर! यह आपके द्वारा नष्ट कर दिया गया है. अत: पृथ्वी का आनन्द लो।

जम्बूद्वीपो महाराज नानाजनपदायुतः त्वया पुरुषशार्दूल दण्डेन मृदितः प्रभो

O great king! O tiger among men! O lord! You used a staff to crush Jambūdvīpa, with its many countries.

हे महान राजा! हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! हे भगवान! आपने अनेक देशों सहित जम्बूद्वीप को कुचलने के लिए लाठी का प्रयोग किया।

जम्बूद्वीपेन सदृशः क्रौञ्चद्वीपो नराधिप अपरेण महामेरोर्दण्डेन मृदितस्त्वया

O lord of men! You also used a staff to crush Krauñcadvīpa, equal to Jambūdvīpa and to the west of the great Meru.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपने जंबूद्वीप के बराबर और महान मेरु के पश्चिम में क्रौंचद्वीप को कुचलने के लिए भी एक छड़ी का इस्तेमाल किया था।

क्रौञ्चद्वीपेन सदृशः शाकद्वीपो नराधिप पूर्वेण तु महामेरोर्दण्डेन मृदितस्त्वया

O lord of men! You used a staff to crush Śākadvīpa, equal to Krauñcadvīpa and to the east of the great Meru.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! आपने क्रौंचद्वीप के बराबर और महान मेरु के पूर्व में शाकद्वीप को कुचलने के लिए एक छड़ी का इस्तेमाल किया।

उत्तरेण महामेरोः शाकद्वीपेन संमितः भद्राश्वः पुरुषव्याघ्र दण्डेन मृदितस्त्वया

O tiger among men! To the north of the great Meru is Bhadrāśva, equal to Śākadvīpa. You crushed it with your staff.

हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! महान मेरु के उत्तर में शाकद्वीप के बराबर भद्राश्व है। तूने उसे अपनी लाठी से कुचल डाला।

द्वीपाश्च सान्तरद्वीपा नानाजनपदालयाः विगाह्य सागरं वीर दण्डेन मृदितास्त्वया

There were many countries between one dvīpa and another dvīpa. O brave one! You immersed yourself in the ocean and crushed them with your staff.

एक द्वीप से दूसरे द्वीप के बीच कई देश थे। हे वीर! तूने अपने आप को समुद्र में डुबा दिया और अपनी लाठी से उन्हें कुचल डाला।

एतान्यप्रतिमानि त्वं कृत्वा कर्माणि भारत न प्रीयसे महाराज पूज्यमानो द्विजातिभिः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! These were the immeasurable deeds that were performed by you. O great king! The brāhmana-s honoured you. But despite that, you are not pleased.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! ये आपके द्वारा किये गये अतुलनीय कार्य थे। हे महान राजा! ब्राह्मणों ने आपका सम्मान किया। लेकिन इसके बावजूद भी आप खुश नहीं हैं.

स त्वं भ्रातॄनिमान्दृष्ट्वा प्रतिनन्दस्व भारत ऋषभानिव संमत्तान्गजेन्द्रानूर्जितानिव

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Look at your brothers and delight them. They are like proud bulls and proud kings of elephants.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अपने भाइयों को देखो और उन्हें प्रसन्न करो। वे घमण्डी बैल और हाथियों के घमण्डी राजाओं के समान हैं।

अमरप्रतिमाः सर्वे शत्रुसाहाः परंतपाः एकोऽपि हि सुखायैषां क्षमः स्यादिति मे मतिः

All of you are like the immortals. All of you are scorchers of enemies and are capable of withstanding enemies. It is my view that even a single one of you would have been enough to bring me happiness,

आप सभी अमर के समान हैं। तुम सब शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले हो और शत्रुओं का सामना करने में समर्थ हो। मेरा मानना ​​है कि आपमें से एक भी मुझे खुशी देने के लिए काफी होता,

किं पुनः पुरुषव्याघ्राः पतयो मे नरर्षभाः समस्तानीन्द्रियाणीव शरीरस्य विचेष्टने

not to speak of when all of you tigers and men and bulls among men are my husbands, like the senses enervating the body.

अनृतं माब्रवीच्छ्वश्रूः सर्वज्ञा सर्वदर्शिनी युधिष्ठिरस्त्वां पाञ्चालि सुखे धास्यत्यनुत्तमे

My mother-in-law knows everything and can see everything. Her words cannot be false. She told me, "O Pāñcālī! O excellent one! Yudhiṣṭhira will maintain you in happiness,

मेरी सास सब कुछ जानती है और सब कुछ देख सकती है। उसकी बातें झूठी नहीं हो सकतीं. उसने मुझसे कहा, "हे पांचाली! हे श्रेष्ठ! युधिष्ठिर तुम्हें सुख में रखेंगे,

हत्वा राजसहस्राणि बहून्याशुपराक्रमः तद्व्यर्थं संप्रपश्यामि मोहात्तव जनाधिप

after he has killed many thousands of kings through his valour." O lord of men! Now, because of your confusion, I see that you will make this futile.

जब उसने अपनी वीरता से हजारों राजाओं को मार डाला था।" हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! अब, आपके भ्रम के कारण, मैं देख रहा हूँ कि आप इसे व्यर्थ कर देंगे।

येषामुन्मत्तको ज्येष्ठः सर्वे तस्योपचारिणः तवोन्मादेन राजेन्द्र सोन्मादाः सर्वपाण्डवाः

O Indra among kings! If the eldest brother is mad, all the others follow him. Because you are mad, all the Pāṇḍava-s will become mad.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यदि सबसे बड़ा भाई पागल हो तो बाकी सभी उसके पीछे हो लेते हैं। क्योंकि तुम पागल हो, सभी पांडव पागल हो जायेंगे।

यदि हि स्युरनुन्मत्ता भ्रातरस्ते जनाधिप बद्ध्वा त्वां नास्तिकैः सार्धं प्रशासेयुर्वसुंधराम्

O lord of men! If these brothers of yours were not mad, they should have bound you up with the non-believers and ruled the earth.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! यदि तुम्हारे ये भाई पागल न होते, तो तुम्हें काफिरों के साथ बाँध देते और पृथ्वी पर राज्य करते।

कुरुते मूढमेवं हि यः श्रेयो नाधिगच्छति धूपैरञ्जनयोगैश्च नस्यकर्मभिरेव च भेषजैः स चिकित्स्यः स्याद्य उन्मार्गेण गच्छति

A person who acts stupidly does not obtain anything that is superior. A person who is on the path towards madness should be treated with incense, collyrium, treatment through the nose, medicines and medical remedies.

जो व्यक्ति मूर्खतापूर्ण कार्य करता है उसे कोई श्रेष्ठ वस्तु प्राप्त नहीं होती। जो व्यक्ति पागलपन की ओर अग्रसर हो उसे धूप, काजल, नाक से उपचार, औषधियों तथा वैद्यक उपचार से उपचार करना चाहिए।

साहं सर्वाधमा लोके स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम तथा विनिकृतामित्रैर्याहमिच्छामि जीवितुम्

O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! I am the worst of all women in the world. Though I have been oppressed by the enemy, I still wish to remain alive.

हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! मैं दुनिया की सभी महिलाओं में सबसे खराब हूं। यद्यपि शत्रु ने मुझ पर अत्याचार किया है, फिर भी मैं जीवित रहना चाहता हूँ।

एतेषां यतमानानामुत्पद्यन्ते तु संपदः त्वं तु सर्वां महीं लब्ध्वा कुरुषे स्वयमापदम्

They have struggled and have obtained this prosperity. But after having obtained the entire earth, you are acting so as to bring a disaster on yourself.

उन्होंने संघर्ष करके यह समृद्धि हासिल की है।' परन्तु सारी पृय्वी को प्राप्त करने के बाद तुम अपने ऊपर विपत्ति लाने का उपाय कर रहे हो।

यथास्तां संमतौ राज्ञां पृथिव्यां राजसत्तमौ मान्धाता चाम्बरीषश्च तथा राजन्विराजसे

O king! The kings Mandhata and Ambarīṣa were supreme among kings and were honoured by all the kings on earth. Be as radiant as them.

हे राजा! राजा मांधाता और अंबरीष राजाओं में सर्वोच्च थे और पृथ्वी पर सभी राजाओं द्वारा उनका सम्मान किया जाता था। उनके समान तेजस्वी बनो।

प्रशाधि पृथिवीं देवीं प्रजा धर्मेण पालयन् सपर्वतवनद्वीपां मा राजन्विमना भव

In accordance with dharma, rule the goddess earth, with its mountains, forests and islands, and protect the subjects. O king! Do not be distressed in your mind.

धर्म के अनुसार, देवी पृथ्वी, उसके पर्वतों, वनों और द्वीपों पर शासन करें और प्रजा की रक्षा करें। हे राजा! मन में व्यथित न हों.

यजस्व विविधैर्यज्ञैर्जुह्वन्नग्नीन्प्रयच्छ च पुराणि भोगान्वासांसि द्विजातिभ्यो नृपोत्तम

Perform many sacrifices and offer oblations into the fire. O supreme among kings! Give the brāhmana-s cities, objects of pleasure and garments."

बहुत से यज्ञ करो और अग्नि में आहुति डालो। हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! ब्राह्मणों को नगर, सुख की वस्तुएँ और वस्त्र दो।"
