भीष्म उवाच अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् संवादं भरतश्रेष्ठ शल्मलेः पवनस्य च

Bhīṣma said: On this, an ancient history is recounted. O best among the Bhārata lineage! This is a conversation between a śālmali tree and the wind.

भीष्म ने कहा: इसमें एक प्राचीन इतिहास का वर्णन है। हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! यह शाल्मली वृक्ष और हवा के बीच का संवाद है।

हिमवन्तं समासाद्य महानासीद्वनस्पतिः वर्षपूगाभिसंवृद्धः शाखास्कन्धपलाशवान्

There was a gigantic tree on the slopes of the Himālaya-s. It had grown for many years and possessed a trunk, branches and foliage.

हिमालय की ढलान पर एक विशाल वृक्ष था। यह कई वर्षों तक विकसित हुआ था और इसमें एक तना, शाखाएँ और पत्ते थे।

तत्र स्म मत्ता मातङ्गा धर्मार्ताः श्रमकर्शिताः विश्रमन्ति महाबाहो तथान्या मृगजातयः

O mighty-armed one! Crazy elephants, afflicted by heat and oppressed by exhaustion, would rest there. So would other kinds of animals.s

हे महाबाहु! गर्मी से व्याकुल और थकावट से व्याकुल पागल हाथी वहाँ विश्राम करते थे। इसी प्रकार अन्य प्रकार के जानवर भी होंगे

नल्वमात्रपरीणाहो घनच्छायो वनस्पतिः शुकशारिकसंघुष्टः फलवान्पुष्पवानपि

The tree was dense with foliage and was a nalva in circumference. It was covered with fruits and flowers and frequented by parrots and śārikā birds.

वृक्ष पत्तों से घना था और परिधि में नालवा था। यह फलों और फूलों से ढका हुआ था और तोते और सारिका पक्षी अक्सर आते थे।

सार्थिका वणिजश्चापि तापसाश्च वनौकसः वसन्ति वासान्मार्गस्थाः सुरम्ये तरुसत्तमे

This was beautiful and supreme among trees. Merchants in search of riches, ascetics, residents of the forest and travellers along the path would rest under it.

यह वृक्षों में सुन्दर एवं सर्वोच्च था। धन की तलाश में निकले व्यापारी, तपस्वी, जंगल के निवासी और रास्ते में आने वाले यात्री इसके नीचे विश्राम करते थे।

तस्या ता विपुलाः शाखा दृष्ट्वा स्कन्धांश्च सर्वतः अभिगम्याब्रवीदेनं नारदो भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Nārada saw the large trunk and the branches that extended in every direction. He approached and said,

हे भरत वंश में बैल! नारद ने बड़े तने और हर दिशा में फैली शाखाओं को देखा। वह पास आया और बोला,

अहो नु रमणीयस्त्वमहो चासि मनोरमः प्रीयामहे त्वया नित्यं तरुप्रवर शल्मले

"You are beautiful. You are handsome. O śālmali! O best among trees! You always please us.

"तुम सुंदर हो। तुम रूपवान हो। हे शाल्मलि! हे वृक्षों में श्रेष्ठ! तुम सदैव हमें प्रसन्न करते हो।"

सदैव शकुनास्तात मृगाश्चाधस्तथा गजाः वसन्ति तव संहृष्टा मनोहरतरास्तथा

O son! Birds, animals and elephants have always cheerfully resided under your delicate shade.

हे वत्स आपकी कोमल छाया में पक्षी, जानवर और हाथी सदैव प्रसन्न रहते हैं।

तव शाखा महाशाख स्कन्धं च विपुलं तथा न वै प्रभग्नान्पश्यामि मारुतेन कथंचन

Your branches, larger branches and trunk are gigantic. Under no circumstance do I see any of these being shattered by the wind.

आपकी शाखाएँ, बड़ी शाखाएँ और तना विशाल हैं। मैं किसी भी परिस्थिति में इनमें से किसी को भी हवा से बिखरते हुए नहीं देखता।

किं नु ते मारुतस्तात प्रीतिमानथ वा सुहृत् त्वां रक्षति सदा येन वनेऽस्मिन्पवनो ध्रुवम्

O son! Is the wind your affectionate well-wisher? It is certain that the wind always protects you in this forest.

हे वत्स क्या पवन तुम्हारा स्नेही शुभचिंतक है? यह निश्चित है कि इस जंगल में हवा सदैव आपकी रक्षा करती है।

विवान्हि पवनः स्थानाद्वृक्षानुच्चावचानपि पर्वतानां च शिखराण्याचालयति वेगवान्

The wind uproots large and small trees from their places. Its force dislodges the peaks of mountains.

हवा छोटे-बड़े पेड़ों को उनकी जगह से उखाड़ देती है। इसकी शक्ति पर्वतों की चोटियों को उखाड़ देती है।

शोषयत्येव पातालं विवान्गन्धवहः शुचिः ह्रदांश्च सरितश्चैव सागरांश्च तथैव ह

With its fragrant and sacred scent, the wind even dries up the nether regions and also the lakes, the rivers and the oceans.

अपनी सुगंधित और पवित्र सुगंध से हवा पाताल लोक, झीलों, नदियों और महासागरों को भी सुखा देती है।

त्वां संरक्षेत पवनः सखित्वेन न संशयः तस्माद्बहलशाखोऽसि पर्णवान्पुष्पवानपि

There is no doubt that the wind protects you as a friend. That is the reason you have these many branches, leaves and flowers.

इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि हवा एक मित्र के रूप में आपकी रक्षा करती है। यही कारण है कि आपकी इतनी शाखाएँ, पत्तियाँ और फूल हैं।

इदं च रमणीयं ते प्रतिभाति वनस्पते यदिमे विहगास्तात रमन्ते मुदितास्त्वयि

O tree! O son! It is seen to be beautiful that these birds sport and find pleasure in you.

हे वृक्ष! हे वत्स यह सुन्दर प्रतीत होता है कि ये पक्षी अठखेलियाँ करते हैं और आपमें आनन्द पाते हैं।

एषां पृथक्समस्तानां श्रूयते मधुरः स्वरः पुष्पसंमोदने काले वाशतां सुमनोहरम्

Their delicate voices can be separately heard. When it is the time for flowering, one can hear these extremely beautiful sounds.

उनकी नाज़ुक आवाज़ें अलग से सुनी जा सकती हैं। जब फूल आने का समय होता है तो ये बेहद खूबसूरत आवाजें सुनाई देती हैं।

तथेमे मुदिता नागाः स्वयूथकुलशोभिनः घर्मार्तास्त्वां समासाद्य सुखं विन्दन्ति शल्मले

The elephants, the adornments of their herds, also take delight. O śālmali! They are afflicted by the heat and find joy on seeking refuge with you.

हाथी, जो उनके झुण्ड के आभूषण हैं, भी प्रसन्न होते हैं। हे शाल्मलि! वे गर्मी से पीड़ित हैं और आपकी शरण लेने से प्रसन्न होते हैं।

तथैव मृगजातीभिरन्याभिरुपशोभसे तथा सार्थाधिवासैश्च शोभसे मेरुवद्द्रुम

In that way, other kinds of animals are also radiant near you. Those who are in search of riches seek refuge. O tree! You are as resplendent as Mount Meru.

इस प्रकार अन्य प्रकार के जानवर भी आपके निकट दीप्तिमान रहते हैं। जो धन की खोज में हैं, वे शरण ढूंढ़ते हैं। हे वृक्ष! आप मेरु पर्वत के समान देदीप्यमान हैं।

ब्राह्मणैश्च तपःसिद्धैस्तापसैः श्रमणैरपि त्रिविष्टपसमं मन्ये तवायतनमेव ह

There are brāhmana-s, successful ascetics, hermits and mendicants. I think that your shelter is like heaven. The wind goes everywhere and is fierce.

वहाँ ब्राह्मण, सफल तपस्वी, तपस्वी और भिक्षुक हैं। मुझे लगता है कि आपका आश्रय स्वर्ग के समान है. हवा हर जगह जाती है और भयंकर होती है।

बन्धुत्वादथ वा सख्याच्छल्मले नात्र संशयः पालयत्येव सततं भीमः सर्वत्रगोऽनिलः

O śālmali! There is no doubt that it protects you because you are a relative or a friend.

हे शाल्मलि! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि यह आपकी रक्षा करता है क्योंकि आप एक रिश्तेदार या मित्र हैं।

न्यग्भावं परमं वायोः शल्मले त्वमुपागतः तवाहमस्मीति सदा येन रक्षति मारुतः

O śālmali! When the wind approaches you, perhaps you bow down supremely and say, "I belong to you." That is the reason the wind always protects you.

हे शाल्मलि! जब हवा तुम्हारे पास आती है, तो शायद तुम अत्यधिक झुक जाते हो और कहते हो, "मैं तुम्हारा हूँ।" यही कारण है कि वायु सदैव आपकी रक्षा करती है।

न तं पश्याम्यहं वृक्षं पर्वतं वापि तं दृढम् यो न वायुबलाद्भग्नः पृथिव्यामिति मे मतिः

I have not seen a tree or a firm mountain that has not been shattered by the wind. It is my view that there is nothing like this on earth.

मैंने कोई वृक्ष या दृढ़ पर्वत नहीं देखा जो हवा से टूट न गया हो। मेरा मानना ​​है कि पृथ्वी पर ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है।

त्वं पुनः कारणैर्नूनं शल्मले रक्ष्यसे सदा वायुना सपरीवारस्तेन तिष्ठस्यसंशयम्

O śālmali! But then again, for some reason, you and your family are always protected by the wind. That is the reason you stand, free from fear."

हे शाल्मलि! लेकिन फिर, किसी कारण से, आप और आपका परिवार हमेशा हवा से सुरक्षित रहते हैं। यही कारण है कि आप डर से मुक्त होकर खड़े हैं।”

शल्मलिरुवाच न मे वायुः सखा ब्रह्मन्न बन्धुर्न च मे सुहृत् परमेष्ठी तथा नैव येन रक्षति मानिलः

The śālmali replied, "O brāhmaṇa! The wind is not my friend, my relative, or my well-wisher. Nor is the wind my supreme lord that it should protect me.

शाल्मली ने उत्तर दिया, "हे ब्राह्मण! हवा मेरी मित्र, रिश्तेदार या मेरी शुभचिंतक नहीं है। न ही हवा मेरी सर्वोच्च स्वामी है कि वह मेरी रक्षा करे।"

मम तेजोबलं वायोर्भीममपि हि नारद कलामष्टादशीं प्राणैर्न मे प्राप्नोति मारुतः

O Nārada! My energy and strength are more terrible than that of the wind. The wind cannot even attain one-eighteenth of my force of life.

हे नारद! मेरी शक्ति और शक्ति वायु से भी अधिक भयानक है। वायु मेरी जीवन-शक्ति का अठारहवाँ भाग भी प्राप्त नहीं कर सकती।

आगच्छन्परमो वायुर्मया विष्टम्भितो बलात् रुजन्द्रुमान्पर्वतांश्च यच्चान्यदपि किंचन

When the strong wind arrives and destroys trees, mountains and everything else, I resist it with my force.

जब तेज़ हवा आती है और पेड़ों, पहाड़ों और बाकी सभी चीज़ों को नष्ट कर देती है, तो मैं अपनी ताकत से उसका विरोध करता हूँ।

स मया बहुशो भग्नः प्रभञ्जन्वै प्रभञ्जनः तस्मान्न बिभ्ये देवर्षे क्रुद्धादपि समीरणात्

The wind does the shattering, but has been shattered by me many times. O devarṣi! That is the reason I am not terrified of even an enraged wind."

हवाएं तो तोड़ती हैं, पर मैं तो कई बार टूटा हूं। हे देवर्षि! यही कारण है कि मैं क्रोधित वायु से भी नहीं डरता।”

नारद उवाच शल्मले विपरीतं ते दर्शनं नात्र संशयः न हि वायोर्बलेनास्ति भूतं तुल्यबलं क्वचित्

Nārada said, "O śālmali! There is no doubt that you look at this in a contrary way. There is nothing anywhere that has a strength that is equal to the wind's strength.

नारद ने कहा, "हे शाल्मली! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि आप इसे विपरीत तरीके से देखते हैं। कहीं भी ऐसी कोई चीज़ नहीं है जिसमें हवा की ताकत के बराबर ताकत हो।

इन्द्रो यमो वैश्रवणो वरुणश्च जलेश्वरः न तेऽपि तुल्या मरुतः किं पुनस्त्वं वनस्पते

Indra, Yāma, Vaiśravaṇa and Vāruṇa, the lord of the waters, are not the wind's equal, not to speak of a tree.

इंद्र, यम, वैश्रवण और जल के स्वामी वरुण, वायु के बराबर नहीं हैं, वृक्ष की तो बात ही छोड़ दें।

यद्धि किंचिदिह प्राणि शल्मले चेष्टते भुवि सर्वत्र भगवान्वायुश्चेष्टाप्राणकरः प्रभुः

O śālmali! When any living being moves on this earth, everywhere, it is the illustrious wind, the lord, who makes the breath of life move.

हे शाल्मलि! जब कोई भी जीवित प्राणी इस पृथ्वी पर, हर जगह गति करता है, तो यह शानदार हवा, भगवान है, जो जीवन की सांस को गति देता है।

एष चेष्टयते सम्यक्प्राणिनः सम्यगायतः असम्यगायतो भूयश्चेष्टते विकृतो नृषु

When it exerts itself properly, it reassures all living beings. When it is not properly exerted, men move in perverse ways.

जब यह स्वयं को उचित रूप से कार्यान्वित करता है, तो यह सभी जीवित प्राणियों को आश्वस्त करता है। जब इसका समुचित प्रयोग नहीं किया जाता, तो मनुष्य विकृत तरीकों से आगे बढ़ जाते हैं।

स त्वमेवंविधं वायुं सर्वसत्त्वभृतां वरम् न पूजयसि पूज्यं तं किमन्यद्बुद्धिलाघवात्

This is the nature of the wind and it is the supreme upholder of all life. You do not worship someone who should be worshipped. What can this be, other than lack of intelligence?

यह वायु का स्वभाव है और यह समस्त जीवन का सर्वोच्च पोषक है। जिसकी पूजा करनी चाहिए उसकी तुम पूजा नहीं करते। यह बुद्धि की कमी के अलावा और क्या हो सकता है?

असारश्चासि दुर्बुद्धे केवलं बहु भाषसे क्रोधादिभिरवच्छन्नो मिथ्या वदसि शल्मले

You have no substance. You are evil in your intelligence. You only speak a lot. O śālmali! Since you have spoken in this false way, I am enraged with you.

आपमें कोई दम नहीं है. तुम बुद्धि में बुरे हो. आप तो बहुत बोलते हैं. हे शाल्मलि! चूँकि तुमने यह झूठी बात कही है, इसलिये मैं तुम पर क्रोधित हो गया हूँ।

मम रोषः समुत्पन्नस्त्वय्येवं संप्रभाषति ब्रवीम्येष स्वयं वायोस्तव दुर्भाषितं बहु

My anger has been roused at what you have said. I will myself tell the wind about the many wicked words you have spoken.

आपने जो कहा उससे मेरा क्रोध भड़क उठा है। मैं आप ही पवन को बताऊंगा कि तू ने कितने दुष्ट वचन कहे हैं।

चन्दनैः स्पन्दनैः शालैः सरलैर्देवदारुभिः वेतसैर्बन्धनैश्चापि ये चान्ये बलवत्तराः

There are other trees that are stronger still—sandalwood, spāndana, śala, sārāla, devadāru, cane and reeds.

ऐसे अन्य पेड़ हैं जो अभी भी मजबूत हैं - चंदन, स्पंदन, शाल, सरल, देवदारु, बेंत और नरकट।

तैश्चापि नैवं दुर्बुद्धे क्षिप्तो वायुः कृतात्मभिः ते हि जानन्ति वायोश्च बलमात्मन एव च

They are cleansed in their souls and do not evil-mindedly speak about the wind in this way. They know their own strengths and that of the wind.

वे अपनी आत्मा में शुद्ध हैं और इस प्रकार दुष्ट मन से हवा के बारे में बात नहीं करते हैं। वे अपनी और हवा की ताकत जानते हैं।

तस्मात्ते वै नमस्यन्ति श्वसनं द्रुमसत्तमाः त्वं तु मोहान्न जानीषे वायोर्बलमनन्तकम्

That is the reason those supreme trees bow down before the wind. You are deluded and do not know about the wind's infinite strength."

यही कारण है कि वे श्रेष्ठ वृक्ष हवा के सामने झुक जाते हैं। तुम भ्रमित हो और वायु की अनन्त शक्ति को नहीं जानते।"
