ब्राह्मण उवाच अतिभारोद्यतस्यैव भारापनयनं महत् पराश्वासकरं वाक्यमिदं मे भवतः श्रुतम्

The Brāhman said: The removal of a heavy burden is a great thing, And this word of yours is a great comfort to me.

ब्राह्मण ने कहा: भारी बोझ का हट जाना बहुत बड़ी बात है, और तुम्हारे इस वचन से मुझे बड़ी शान्ति मिलती है।

अध्वक्लान्तस्य शयनं स्थानक्लान्तस्य चासनम् तृषितस्य च पानीयं क्षुधार्तस्य च भोजनम्

A bed for one who is tired from traveling, a seat for one who is tired from standing, water for one who is thirsty, food for one who is hungry,

यात्रा से थके हुए के लिए बिस्तर, खड़े-खड़े थके हुए के लिए आसन, प्यासे के लिए पानी, भूखे के लिए भोजन,

ईप्सितस्येव संप्राप्तिरन्नस्य समयेऽतिथेः एषितस्यात्मनः काले वृद्धस्येव सुतो यथा

The arrival of a guest at the time of eating is like the attainment of what is desired. The arrival of a son at the time of old age is like the attainment of what is desired.

भोजन के समय किसी अतिथि का आगमन मनोवांछित वस्तु की प्राप्ति के समान होता है। बुढ़ापे के समय पुत्र का आगमन अभीष्ट प्राप्ति के समान है।

मनसा चिन्तितस्येव प्रीतिस्निग्धस्य दर्शनम् प्रह्रादयति मां वाक्यं भवता यदुदीरितम्

The sight of you, who are so kind and affectionate, is like the fulfillment of a wish. The words you have spoken are gladdening to me.

आप, जो इतने दयालु और स्नेही हैं, का दर्शन किसी इच्छा की पूर्ति के समान है। आपने जो शब्द कहे हैं, उनसे मुझे प्रसन्नता हुई है।

दत्तचक्षुरिवाकाशे पश्यामि विमृशामि च प्रज्ञानवचनाद्योऽयमुपदेशो हि मे कृतः बाढमेवं करिष्यामि यथा मां भाषते भवान्

I see and reflect as if I were given eyes in the sky. This is the instruction given to me by the one who speaks with wisdom. Indeed, I shall do as you tell me.

मैं ऐसे देखता और प्रतिबिंबित करता हूं मानो मुझे आकाश में आंखें दी गई हों। जो ज्ञान से बोलता है, उस ने मुझे यही शिक्षा दी है। सचमुच, जैसा तू कहेगा मैं वैसा ही करूंगा।

इहेमां रजनीं साधो निवसस्व मया सह प्रभाते यास्यति भवान्पर्याश्वस्तः सुखोषितः असौ हि भगवान्सूर्यो मन्दरश्मिरवाङ्मुखः

"O good man, please stay here tonight with me. In the morning, you will leave, refreshed and well-rested." "The sun, the Blessed One, has set, his rays feeble, his face turned away."

"हे भले आदमी, कृपया आज रात मेरे साथ यहीं रुकें। सुबह आप तरोताजा और स्वस्थ होकर चले जायेंगे।" "सूर्य, धन्य, अस्त हो गया है, उसकी किरणें क्षीण हो गई हैं, उसका चेहरा मुड़ गया है।"

भीष्म उवाच ततस्तेन कृतातिथ्यः सोऽतिथिः शत्रुसूदन उवास किल तां रात्रिं सह तेन द्विजेन वै

Bhishma said: Then, O destroyer of enemies, that guest, who had been hospitably received by him, lived with that brahmin for that night.

भीष्म ने कहा: फिर, हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले, वह अतिथि, जिसका उनके द्वारा आतिथ्य सत्कार किया गया था, उस रात उस ब्राह्मण के साथ रहा।

तत्तच्च धर्मसंयुक्तं तयोः कथयतोस्तदा व्यतीता सा निशा कृत्स्ना सुखेन दिवसोपमा

And as they spoke, they were united with the Dharma. The whole night passed like a day, with happiness.

और जैसे ही उन्होंने बात की, वे धर्म के साथ एकजुट हो गये। पूरी रात खुशी से दिन की तरह बीत गई.

ततः प्रभातसमये सोऽतिथिस्तेन पूजितः ब्राह्मणेन यथाशक्त्या स्वकार्यमभिकाङ्क्षता

Then, at dawn, that guest, honored by that brahmin according to his ability, desiring his own purpose,

फिर प्रात:काल होने पर उस ब्राह्मण ने अपनी सामर्थ्य के अनुसार उस अतिथि का अपने प्रयोजन की इच्छा से आदर सत्कार किया।

ततः स विप्रः कृतधर्मनिश्चयः; कृताभ्यनुज्ञः स्वजनेन धर्मवित् यथोपदिष्टं भुजगेन्द्रसंश्रयं; जगाम काले सुकृतैकनिश्चयः

Then the brahmin, having made up his mind to perform the prescribed duties, and having obtained the consent of his family, which was learned in the Law, went at the proper time to the abode of the king of serpents, determined solely on doing what was enjoined.

तब ब्राह्मण ने निर्धारित कर्तव्यों का पालन करने का मन बना लिया, और अपने परिवार की सहमति प्राप्त कर ली, जो कानून में सीखी गई थी, उचित समय पर नागों के राजा के निवास पर गया, और केवल वही करने का निश्चय किया जो उसे आदेश दिया गया था।
