भीष्म उवाच अत्र कर्मान्तवचनं कीर्तयन्ति पुराविदः प्रत्यक्षावेव धर्मार्थौ क्षत्रियस्य विजानतः तत्र न व्यवधातव्यं परोक्षा धर्मयापना

Bhīṣma said, "On this kind of deed, those who are knowledgeable about ancient accounts recite definitive words. For a kṣatriya who knows, dharma and artha are immediately evident and one cannot separate them. But some working of dharma is indirect.

अधर्मो धर्म इत्येतद्यथा वृकपदं तथा धर्माधर्मफले जातु न ददर्शेह कश्चन

"This is adharma." "That is dharma." Such statements are like the footprints of a wolf. The fruits of dharma and adharma can never be seen.

"यह अधर्म है।" "वही धर्म है।" ऐसे बयान भेड़िये के पैरों के निशान की तरह हैं. धर्म और अधर्म का फल कभी देखा नहीं जा सकता।

बुभूषेद्बलवानेव सर्वं बलवतो वशे श्रियं बलममात्यांश्च बलवानिह विन्दति

A strong person can use his strength to bring everything under his subjugation and prosper.

एक ताकतवर व्यक्ति अपनी ताकत का इस्तेमाल हर चीज को अपने वश में करने और समृद्धि लाने के लिए कर सकता है।

यो ह्यनाढ्यः स पतितस्तदुच्छिष्टं यदल्पकम् बह्वपथ्यं बलवति न किंचित्त्रायते भयात्

A strong person obtains Śrī, an army and advisers. One without wealth falls and is like a little bit of leftover food. However, even for a strong person, there are many inauspicious things and these ensure that he is not saved from fear.

एक शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति को श्री, सेना और सलाहकार प्राप्त होते हैं। जिसके पास धन नहीं है उसका पतन हो जाता है और वह बचे हुए थोड़े से भोजन के समान हो जाता है। हालाँकि, एक मजबूत व्यक्ति के लिए भी, कई अशुभ चीजें होती हैं और ये सुनिश्चित करती हैं कि वह भय से बचा नहीं है।

उभौ सत्याधिकारौ तौ त्रायेते महतो भयात् अति धर्माद्बलं मन्ये बलाद्धर्मः प्रवर्तते

It is only those two true foundations that save him from great fear. I think that strength is superior to dharma. Dharma results from strength.

बले प्रतिष्ठितो धर्मो धरण्यामिव जङ्गमः धूमो वायोरिव वशं बलं धर्मोऽनुवर्तते

Dharma is established on strength, like mobile objects on the surface of the earth. Just as smoke is controlled by the wind, dharma follows strength.

धर्म पृथ्वी की सतह पर गतिशील वस्तुओं की तरह शक्ति पर स्थापित होता है। जिस प्रकार धुआं हवा द्वारा नियंत्रित होता है, उसी प्रकार धर्म शक्ति का अनुसरण करता है।

अनीश्वरे बलं धर्मो द्रुमं वल्लीव संश्रिता वश्यो बलवतां धर्मः सुखं भोगवतामिव नास्त्यसाध्यं बलवतां सर्वं बलवतां शुचि

Just as a creeper depends on a tree, dharma provides strength to a weak person. Dharma is under the control of those who are strong, just as happiness is enjoyed by those who possess objects of pleasure. There is nothing that a strong person is not successful at. For the strong, everything is pure.

जिस प्रकार एक लता एक वृक्ष पर निर्भर रहती है, उसी प्रकार धर्म एक कमजोर व्यक्ति को शक्ति प्रदान करता है। धर्म उन लोगों के नियंत्रण में है जो बलवान हैं, जैसे सुख का आनंद वे लोग उठाते हैं जिनके पास सुख की वस्तुएं हैं। ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं है जिसमें एक मजबूत व्यक्ति सफल न हो। बलवान के लिए सब कुछ शुद्ध है।

दुराचारः क्षीणबलः परिमाणं नियच्छति अथ तस्मादुद्विजते सर्वो लोको वृकादिव

If a wicked person is weak in strength, his stature is reduced. Therefore, everyone is alarmed at him, as if he is a wolf.

यदि कोई दुष्ट व्यक्ति शक्ति में कमजोर हो तो उसका कद छोटा हो जाता है। इसलिए, हर कोई उससे घबरा जाता है, मानो वह कोई भेड़िया हो।

अपध्वस्तो ह्यवमतो दुःखं जीवति जीवितम् जीवितं यदवक्षिप्तं यथैव मरणं तथा

He is censured and dishonoured and lives a life of unhappiness. A life of humiliation is just like death.

वह निन्दित और अपमानित होता है और दुःख का जीवन जीता है। अपमान का जीवन मृत्यु के समान है।

यदेनमाहुः पापेन चारित्रेण विनिक्षतम् स भृशं तप्यतेऽनेन वाक्शल्येन परिक्षतः

When people say that he has been cast aside because of his wicked character, he is severely tormented and is wounded by words that are like stakes.

जब लोग कहते हैं कि उसके दुष्ट चरित्र के कारण उसे अलग कर दिया गया है, तो उसे गंभीर पीड़ा होती है और वह काठ के समान शब्दों से घायल हो जाता है।

अत्रैतदाहुराचार्याः पापस्य परिमोक्षणे त्रयीं विद्यां निषेवेत तथोपासीत स द्विजान्

On this, preceptors have spoken about ways of freeing oneself from sins. He must serve the three kinds of learning and tend to brāhmana-s.

इस पर गुरुओं ने पापों से मुक्ति के उपाय बताए हैं। उसे तीन प्रकार की विद्याओं की सेवा करनी चाहिए और ब्राह्मणों की ओर प्रवृत्त होना चाहिए।

प्रसादयेन्मधुरया वाचाप्यथ च कर्मणा महामनाश्चैव भवेद्विवहेच्च महाकुले

He must seek their favours through sweet words and deeds. He must be great-minded and marry into a noble family.

उसे मीठे शब्दों और कार्यों के माध्यम से उनका पक्ष लेना चाहिए। वह महान विचारधारा वाला होना चाहिए और एक कुलीन परिवार में शादी करनी चाहिए।

इत्यस्मीति वदेदेवं परेषां कीर्तयन्गुणान् जपेदुदकशीलः स्यात्पेशलो नातिजल्पनः

He must recount the good qualities of others and say that he will be like them. He must meditate, perform the water-rites, be gentle and not talk a lot.

उसे दूसरों के अच्छे गुणों को गिनाना चाहिए और कहना चाहिए कि वह उनके जैसा बनेगा। उसे ध्यान करना चाहिए, जल-संस्कार करना चाहिए, नम्र होना चाहिए और अधिक बातचीत नहीं करनी चाहिए।

ब्रह्मक्षत्रं संप्रविशेद्बहु कृत्वा सुदुष्करम् उच्यमानोऽपि लोकेन बहु तत्तदचिन्तयन्

Having performed many extremely difficult deeds, he should penetrate the ranks of brāhmaṇa and kṣatriya-s. Even if many people reprimand him because of this, he should not pay any attention to it.

अनेक अत्यंत कठिन कर्म करके उसे ब्राह्मण और क्षत्रिय की श्रेणी में प्रवेश करना चाहिए। भले ही इस बात को लेकर कई लोग उसे डांटें भी, लेकिन उसे इस पर ध्यान नहीं देना चाहिए।

अपापो ह्येवमाचारः क्षिप्रं बहुमतो भवेत् सुखं वित्तं च भुञ्जीत वृत्तेनैतेन गोपयेत् लोके च लभते पूजां परत्र च महत्फलम्

If he does not commit wicked acts, through such conduct he will quickly become greatly respected. He will enjoy happiness and riches and must protect himself through his conduct. He will obtain worship in this world and great fruits in the hereafter.

यदि वह दुष्ट कार्य नहीं करता, तो ऐसे आचरण से वह शीघ्र ही बहुत सम्मानित हो जाएगा। वह सुख और धन का आनंद उठाएगा और उसे अपने आचरण से अपनी रक्षा करनी होगी। उसे इस लोक में पूजा और परलोक में उत्तम फल प्राप्त होगा।
