वैशंपायन उवाच प्रवेशने तु पार्थानां जनस्य पुरवासिनः दिदृक्षूणां सहस्राणि समाजग्मुर्बहून्यथ

Vaiśampāyana said: When the Pārtha-s entered, the people, the residents of the city, wished to see them and assembled in many thousands. The royal road and the squares were decorated and beautiful.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब पार्थ-स ने प्रवेश किया, तो लोग, शहर के निवासी, उन्हें देखने की इच्छा रखते थे और हजारों की संख्या में इकट्ठे हो गए। शाही सड़क और चौराहे सजाए गए और सुंदर थे।

स राजमार्गः शुशुभे समलंकृतचत्वरः यथा चन्द्रोदये राजन्वर्धमानो महोदधिः

O king! It was like the giant ocean swelling when the moon rises.

हे राजा! यह वैसा ही था जैसे चंद्रमा के उगने पर विशाल महासागर उमड़ पड़ता है।

गृहाणि राजमार्गे तु रत्नवन्ति बृहन्ति च प्राकम्पन्तेव भारेण स्त्रीणां पूर्णानि भारत

The large houses along the royal road were bejewelled. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Full of women, they seemed to tremble at the weight.

शाही सड़क के किनारे के बड़े घर अलंकृत थे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! महिलाओं से भरी हुई, वे वजन से कांपती हुई लग रही थीं।

ताः शनैरिव सव्रीडं प्रशशंसुर्युधिष्ठिरम् भीमसेनार्जुनौ चैव माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ

Because they were bashful, they softly praised Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, Arjuna and the two Pāṇḍava-s who were Mādrī's sons.

क्योंकि वे शर्मीले थे, उन्होंने धीरे से युधिष्ठिर, भीमसेन, अर्जुन और दो पांडवों की प्रशंसा की जो माद्री के पुत्र थे।

धन्या त्वमसि पाञ्चालि या त्वं पुरुषसत्तमान् उपतिष्ठसि कल्याणि महर्षीनिव गौतमी

"O Pāñcālī! You are blessed and fortunate, since you serve those best among men, like Gautamī tending to the maharṣi-s.

"हे पांचाली! आप धन्य और भाग्यशाली हैं, क्योंकि आप उन सर्वश्रेष्ठ पुरुषों की सेवा करते हैं, जैसे गौतमी महर्षियों की देखभाल करती हैं।

तव कर्माण्यमोघानि व्रतचर्या च भामिनि इति कृष्णां महाराज प्रशशंसुस्तदा स्त्रियः

O beautiful one! You have followed your vows and your deeds have not been fruitless." O great king! At that time, the women praised Kṛṣṇā thus.

हे सुंदर! तुमने अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं का पालन किया है और तुम्हारे कर्म निष्फल नहीं गए हैं।" हे राजन! उस समय, महिलाओं ने कृष्ण की इस प्रकार स्तुति की।

प्रशंसावचनैस्तासां मिथःशब्दैश्च भारत प्रीतिजैश्च तदा शब्दैः पुरमासीत्समाकुलम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Because of the delighted sounds of these words of praise, the city resounded.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! स्तुति के इन शब्दों की आनंदमय ध्वनि से नगर गूँज उठा।

तमतीत्य यथायुक्तं राजमार्गं युधिष्ठिरः अलंकृतं शोभमानमुपायाद्राजवेश्म ह

Having been thus addressed, Yudhiṣṭhira passed through the royal road and arrived at the ornamented and radiant royal palace.

इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर, युधिष्ठिर शाही रास्ते से गुजरे और अलंकृत और दीप्तिमान शाही महल में पहुँचे।

ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वाः पौरजानपदास्तथा ऊचुः कथाः कर्णसुखाः समुपेत्य ततस्ततः

All the ordinary people, the residents of the city and of the countryside, came there from different sides and spoke words that were pleasant to the ear.

नगर और देहात के सब साधारण लोग भिन्न-भिन्न दिशाओं से वहाँ आकर सुनने को प्रिय लगने वाली बातें कहते थे।

दिष्ट्या जयसि राजेन्द्र शत्रूञ्शत्रुनिसूदन दिष्ट्या राज्यं पुनः प्राप्तं धर्मेण च बलेन च

"O Indra among kings! O destroyer of enemies! It is through good fortune that you have defeated the enemy. It is through good fortune that you have regained the kingdom, through dharma and strength.

"हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! सौभाग्य से ही तुमने शत्रु को परास्त किया है। सौभाग्य से ही तुमने राज्य, धर्म और बल से पुनः प्राप्त किया है।"

भव नस्त्वं महाराज राजेह शरदां शतम् प्रजाः पालय धर्मेण यथेन्द्रस्त्रिदिवं नृप

O great king! May you rule over the kingdom for one hundred autumns. O king! Protect the subjects through dharma, as Indra does over the thirty gods."

हे महान राजा! आप एक सौ शरद ऋतु तक राज्य पर शासन करें। हे राजा! धर्म के द्वारा प्रजा की रक्षा करो, जैसे इंद्र तीस देवताओं की रक्षा करता है।"

एवं राजकुलद्वारि मङ्गलैरभिपूजितः आशीर्वादान्द्विजैरुक्तान्प्रतिगृह्य समन्ततः

At the gates of the royal residence, he was worshipped in this auspicious way. In every direction, he received benedictions from the affectionate brāhmana-s.

राज-निवास के द्वार पर इसी शुभ रीति से उनकी पूजा की जाती थी। हर दिशा में उन्हें स्नेही ब्राह्मणों से आशीर्वाद प्राप्त हुआ।

प्रविश्य भवनं राजा देवराजगृहोपमम् श्रुत्वा विजयसंयुक्तं रथात्पश्चादवातरत्

The king entered the palace, which was like the residence of the king of the gods. Hearing those victorious sounds, he descended from his chariot.

राजा ने महल में प्रवेश किया, जो देवताओं के राजा के निवास के समान था। उन विजयी ध्वनियों को सुनकर वह अपने रथ से नीचे उतर आये।

प्रविश्याभ्यन्तरं श्रीमान्दैवतान्यभिगम्य च पूजयामास रत्नैश्च गन्धैर्माल्यैश्च सर्वशः

Entering inside, he approached the prosperous gods and worshipped all of them with jewels and fragrant garlands.

अंदर प्रवेश कर वह समृद्ध देवताओं के पास पहुंचा और रत्नों तथा सुगंधित मालाओं से उन सभी की पूजा की।

निश्चक्राम ततः श्रीमान्पुनरेव महायशाः ददर्श ब्राह्मणांश्चैव सोऽभिरूपानुपस्थितान्

The prosperous and immensely illustrious one again emerged. He saw the handsome brāhmana-s who presented themselves.

एक बार फिर समृद्ध और अत्यंत वैभवशाली व्यक्ति का उदय हुआ। उन्होंने सुन्दर ब्राह्मणों को देखा जो स्वयं प्रस्तुत हुए थे।

स संवृतस्तदा विप्रैराशीर्वादविवक्षुभिः शुशुभे विमलश्चन्द्रस्तारागणवृतो यथा

He was surrounded by those brāhmana-s, who wished to pronounce benedictions over him. He was as resplendent as the sparkling moon, surrounded by a large number of stars.

वह उन ब्राह्मणों से घिरा हुआ था, जो उसे आशीर्वाद देना चाहते थे। वह चमचमाते चंद्रमा के समान देदीप्यमान था, जो असंख्य तारों से घिरा हुआ था।

तान्स संपूजयामास कौन्तेयो विधिवद्द्विजान् धौम्यं गुरुं पुरस्कृत्य ज्येष्ठं पितरमेव च

In the prescribed fashion, Kaunteya honoured the brāhmana-s. With the preceptor Dhaumya and his eldest father at the forefront,

कौन्तेय ने निर्धारित रीति से ब्राह्मणों का सम्मान किया। गुरु धौम्य और उनके सबसे बड़े पिता को सबसे आगे रखते हुए,

सुमनोमोदकै रत्नैर्हिरण्येन च भूरिणा गोभिर्वस्त्रैश्च राजेन्द्र विविधैश्च किमिच्छकैः

he cheerfully worshipped them with sweets, jewels, large quantities of gold, cattle, garments and many other objects that they desired. O Indra among kings!

उसने प्रसन्नतापूर्वक मिठाइयों, गहनों, बड़ी मात्रा में सोना, मवेशी, वस्त्र और कई अन्य वस्तुओं से उनकी पूजा की जो वे चाहते थे। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र!

ततः पुण्याहघोषोऽभूद्दिवं स्तब्ध्वेव भारत सुहृदां हर्षजननः पुण्यः श्रुतिसुखावहः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Auspicious sounds arose and reached up to the sky. These auspicious sounds were pleasant to hear and generated delight among the well-wishers.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मंगल ध्वनियाँ उठीं और आकाश तक जा पहुँचीं। ये मंगल ध्वनियाँ सुनने में सुखद थीं और शुभचिंतकों में प्रसन्नता उत्पन्न करती थीं।

हंसवन्नेदुषां राजन्द्विजानां तत्र भारती शुश्रुवे वेदविदुषां पुष्कलार्थपदाक्षरा

O king! The brāhmana-s were learned in the Veda-s and their chants resounded like the noise made by swans. It was as if Bhāratī could be heard there, with meanings, lines and syllables.

हे राजा! ब्राह्मण वेदों के विद्वान थे और उनके मंत्र हंसों के शोर के समान गूंजते थे। ऐसा लगता था मानो भारती को वहां अर्थों, पंक्तियों और अक्षरों के साथ सुना जा सकता है।

ततो दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषः शङ्खानां च मनोरमः जयं प्रवदतां तत्र स्वनः प्रादुरभून्नृप

There was the roar of drums and the beautiful sound of conch shells. O king! Those sounds were heard and proclaimed the news of victory.

ढोल-नगाड़ों की गड़गड़ाहट और शंखों की सुंदर ध्वनि गूंज रही थी। हे राजा! वे ध्वनियाँ सुनी गईं और विजय का समाचार घोषित किया गया।

निःशब्दे च स्थिते तत्र ततो विप्रजने पुनः राजानं ब्राह्मणच्छद्मा चार्वाको राक्षसोऽब्रवीत्

When the brāhmana-s there became quiet again, the rākṣasa Cārvāka, disguising himself as a brāhmaṇa, spoke to the king.

जब वहां के ब्राह्मण फिर से शांत हो गए, तो राक्षस चार्वाक ने खुद को एक ब्राह्मण के रूप में प्रच्छन्न करके राजा से बात की।

तत्र दुर्योधनसखा भिक्षुरूपेण संवृतः सांख्यः शिखी त्रिदण्डी च धृष्टो विगतसाध्वसः

He was a friend of Duryodhana's and was in the form of a mendicant. He was a sāṃkhya. He had a tuft of hair on his head. He held triple staff in his hand. He was proud and without any fear.

वह दुर्योधन का मित्र था और भिक्षुक के रूप में था। वह एक सांख्य था. उसके सिर पर बालों का गुच्छा था। उन्होंने अपने हाथ में ट्रिपल डंडा पकड़ रखा था. वह स्वाभिमानी और निडर था।

वृतः सर्वैस्तदा विप्रैराशीर्वादविवक्षुभिः परंसहस्रै राजेन्द्र तपोनियमसंस्थितैः

He was surrounded by all those brāhmana-s, who wished to pronounce their benedictions. O Indra among kings! There were thousands of others who had immersed themselves in austerities and rituals.

वह उन सभी ब्राह्मणों से घिरा हुआ था, जो अपना आशीर्वाद देना चाहते थे। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! ऐसे हजारों अन्य लोग थे जिन्होंने खुद को तपस्या और अनुष्ठानों में डुबो दिया था।

स दुष्टः पापमाशंसन्पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् अनामन्त्र्यैव तान्विप्रांस्तमुवाच महीपतिम्

Without taking their permission, the evil and wicked one censured the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s and spoke to the king.

उनकी अनुमति के बिना, दुष्ट और दुष्ट व्यक्ति ने महान आत्मा वाले पांडवों की निंदा की और राजा से बात की।

इमे प्राहुर्द्विजाः सर्वे समारोप्य वचो मयि धिग्भवन्तं कुनृपतिं ज्ञातिघातिनमस्तु वै

"All these brāhmana-s have asked me to speak on their behalf. O wicked king! Shame on you. You have slain your kin.

"इन सभी ब्राह्मणों ने मुझसे उनकी ओर से बोलने के लिए कहा है। हे दुष्ट राजा! तुम्हें शर्म आनी चाहिए। तुमने अपने रिश्तेदारों को मार डाला है।"

किं ते राज्येन कौन्तेय कृत्वेमं ज्ञातिसंक्षयम् घातयित्वा गुरूंश्चैव मृतं श्रेयो न जीवितम्

O Kaunteya! Having caused the destruction of kin, what will you gain from the kingdom? Having slain your elders, it is better to be dead than to be alive."

हे कौन्तेय! स्वजनों का विनाश करके तुम्हें राज्य से क्या लाभ होगा? अपने बड़ों को मार डालने के बाद जीवित रहने की अपेक्षा मर जाना बेहतर है।"

इति ते वै द्विजाः श्रुत्वा तस्य घोरस्य रक्षसः विव्यथुश्चुक्रुशुश्चैव तस्य वाक्यप्रधर्षिताः

On hearing the terrible words of the rākṣasa, the brāhmana-s were distressed. Afflicted by those words, they roared.

राक्षस के भयानक वचन सुनकर ब्राह्मण लोग व्यथित हो गये। उन शब्दों से पीड़ित होकर वे दहाड़ने लगे।

ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे स च राजा युधिष्ठिरः व्रीडिताः परमोद्विग्नास्तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते

O lord of the earth! Together with King Yudhiṣṭhira, all the brāhmana-s were ashamed and greatly anxious and then fell silent.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! राजा युधिष्ठिर सहित सभी ब्राह्मण लज्जित और अत्यंत चिंतित होकर चुप हो गये।

युधिष्ठिर उवाच प्रसीदन्तु भवन्तो मे प्रणतस्याभियाचतः प्रत्यापन्नं व्यसनिनं न मां धिक्कर्तुमर्हथ

Yudhiṣṭhira replied, "I am bowing down before you. Show me your favours. You should not reprimand me. I have just recovered from a catastrophe."

युधिष्ठिर ने उत्तर दिया, "मैं आपके सामने झुक रहा हूं। मुझ पर अपनी कृपा करें। आपको मुझे डांटना नहीं चाहिए। मैं अभी-अभी एक विपत्ति से उबरा हूं।"

वैशंपायन उवाच ततो राजन्ब्राह्मणास्ते सर्व एव विशां पते ऊचुर्नैतद्वचोऽस्माकं श्रीरस्तु तव पार्थिव

Viashampayana said: O king! O lord of the earth! All the brāhmana-s shouted, "O king! These are not our words. May you be prosperous."

विश्म्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! सभी ब्राह्मण चिल्ला उठे, "हे राजा! ये हमारे शब्द नहीं हैं। आप समृद्ध हों।"

जज्ञुश्चैव महात्मानस्ततस्तं ज्ञानचक्षुषा ब्राह्मणा वेदविद्वांसस्तपोभिर्विमलीकृताः

Those brāhmana-s were learned in the Veda-s and had cleansed themselves through austerities. Through the sight of their wisdom, they recognized him.

वे ब्राह्मण वेदों के विद्वान थे और उन्होंने तपस्या के माध्यम से स्वयं को शुद्ध कर लिया था। उन्होंने अपनी बुद्धि की दृष्टि से उसे पहचान लिया।

ब्राह्मणा ऊचुः एष दुर्योधनसखा चार्वाको नाम राक्षसः परिव्राजकरूपेण हितं तस्य चिकीर्षति

The brāhmana-s said, "This is Duryodhana's friend and a rākṣasa named Cārvāka. In the form of a mendicant, he is trying to ensure his welfare.

ब्राह्मणों ने कहा, "यह दुर्योधन का मित्र और चार्वाक नामक राक्षस है। एक भिक्षुक के रूप में, वह अपना कल्याण सुनिश्चित करने का प्रयास कर रहा है।

न वयं ब्रूम धर्मात्मन्व्येतु ते भयमीदृशम् उपतिष्ठतु कल्याणं भवन्तं भ्रातृभिः सह

O one with dharma in your soul! We have not spoken in that way. Do not have any fear on that account. Let good fortune wait on you and your brothers."

हे आपकी आत्मा में धर्म है! हमने उस तरह से बात नहीं की है.' उस कारण कोई भय न रखें. सौभाग्य आपका और आपके भाइयों का इंतजार करे।"

वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्ते ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे हुंकारैः क्रोधमूर्छिताः निर्भर्त्सयन्तः शुचयो निजघ्नुः पापराक्षसम्

Senseless with anger, all the brāhmana-s shouted. They were pure and by censuring the wicked rākṣasa, killed him.

क्रोध से बेसुध होकर सभी ब्राह्मण चिल्लाने लगे। वे पवित्र थे और दुष्ट राक्षस की निंदा करके उसे मार डाला।

स पपात विनिर्दग्धस्तेजसा ब्रह्मवादिनाम् महेन्द्राशनिनिर्दग्धः पादपोऽङ्कुरवानिव

He was burnt and brought down by the energy of the ones who knew about the brāhman. It was like the shoots of a tree charred by the great Indra's vajra.

जो लोग ब्रह्म के बारे में जानते थे, उनकी ऊर्जा से उसे जला दिया गया और नीचे गिरा दिया गया। यह महान इन्द्र के वज्र से जले हुए वृक्ष के अंकुरों के समान था।

पूजिताश्च ययुर्विप्रा राजानमभिनन्द्य तम् राजा च हर्षमापेदे पाण्डवः ससुहृज्जनः

Having been honoured, the brāhmana-s congratulated the king and departed. With his wellwishers, the Pāṇḍava king was delighted.

सम्मानित होकर ब्राह्मणों ने राजा को बधाई दी और चले गये। पांडव राजा अपने शुभचिंतकों से प्रसन्न थे।

वासुदेव उवाच ब्राह्मणास्तात लोकेऽस्मिन्नर्चनीयाः सदा मम एते भूमिचरा देवा वाग्विषाः सुप्रसादकाः

Vāsudeva said, "O father! In this world, brāhmana-s have always been revered by me. They are like gods roaming around on earth. They have poison in their speech, but are also easy to please.

वासुदेव ने कहा, "हे पिता! इस संसार में, ब्राह्मण हमेशा मेरे लिए पूजनीय रहे हैं। वे पृथ्वी पर घूमने वाले देवताओं की तरह हैं। उनकी वाणी में जहर है, लेकिन उन्हें प्रसन्न करना भी आसान है।

पुरा कृतयुगे तात चार्वाको नाम राक्षसः तपस्तेपे महाबाहो बदर्यां बहुवत्सरम्

O father! In ancient times, in kṛta yuga, there was a rākṣasa named Cārvāka. O mighty-armed one! For many years, he tormented himself through austerities in Badarī.

हे पिता! प्राचीन काल में, कृत युग में, चार्वाक नाम का एक राक्षस था। हे महाबाहु! कई वर्षों तक उन्होंने बदरी में तपस्या करके स्वयं को कष्ट दिया।

छन्द्यमानो वरेणाथ ब्रह्मणा स पुनः पुनः अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यो वरयामास भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Brahmā repeatedly offered him boons and he opted for the boon that he should have nothing to fear from all beings.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! ब्रह्मा ने उसे बार-बार वरदान दिए और उसने यह वरदान चुना कि उसे सभी प्राणियों से कोई डर नहीं होना चाहिए।

द्विजावमानादन्यत्र प्रादाद्वरमनुत्तमम् अभयं सर्वभूतेभ्यस्ततस्तस्मै जगत्प्रभुः

The lord of the universe granted him the supreme boon of fearlessness from all beings, as long as he did not disrespect brāhmana-s.

ब्रह्मांड के स्वामी ने उसे सभी प्राणियों से निर्भयता का सर्वोच्च वरदान दिया, जब तक कि उसने ब्राह्मणों का अनादर नहीं किया।

स तु लब्धवरः पापो देवानमितविक्रमः राक्षसस्तापयामास तीव्रकर्मा महाबलः

Having obtained the boon, the rākṣasa, immensely strong, terrible in his deeds and infinitely valorous, began to oppress the gods.

वरदान प्राप्त करने के बाद, अत्यंत बलशाली, भयानक कर्मों वाला और असीम पराक्रमी राक्षस ने देवताओं पर अत्याचार करना शुरू कर दिया।

ततो देवाः समेत्याथ ब्रह्माणमिदमब्रुवन् वधाय रक्षसस्तस्य बलविप्रकृतास्तदा

The gods united and told Brahmā, "His strength is unnatural. Ensure the rākṣasa's death."

देवताओं ने एकजुट होकर ब्रह्मा से कहा, "उसकी ताकत अप्राकृतिक है। राक्षस की मृत्यु सुनिश्चित करें।"

तानुवाचाव्ययो देवो विहितं तत्र वै मया यथास्य भविता मृत्युरचिरेणैव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! He told the gods, "I have already thought of a means, so that he confronts his death soon.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन्होंने देवताओं से कहा, "मैंने पहले से ही एक उपाय सोच लिया है, ताकि वह जल्द ही अपनी मृत्यु का सामना कर सके।

राजा दुर्योधनो नाम सखास्य भविता नृप तस्य स्नेहावबद्धोऽसौ ब्राह्मणानवमंस्यते

O king! He will be a friend to a king named Duryodhana. Because he will be bound down by affection towards him, he will insult brāhmana-s.

हे राजा! वह दुर्योधन नामक राजा का मित्र होगा। चूँकि वह उनके प्रति स्नेह से बंधा होगा, इसलिए वह ब्राह्मणों का अपमान करेगा।

तत्रैनं रुषिता विप्रा विप्रकारप्रधर्षिताः धक्ष्यन्ति वाग्बलाः पापं ततो नाशं गमिष्यति

The brāhmana-s will be incensed at the injury he causes brāhmana-s. Through the strength of their speech, they will destroy the wicked one and he will perish."

उसके द्वारा ब्राह्मणों को पहुंचाई गई चोट से ब्राह्मण क्रोधित हो जाएंगे। वे अपनी वाणी के बल से उस दुष्ट को नष्ट कर देंगे और वह नष्ट हो जाएगा।”

स एष निहतः शेते ब्रह्मदण्डेन राक्षसः चार्वाको नृपतिश्रेष्ठ मा शुचो भरतर्षभ

The rākṣasa has been killed by the curse of brāhmana-s and is lying down. O best among kings! O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Do not sorrow over Cārvāka.

ब्राह्मणों के शाप से राक्षस मारा गया है और लेटा हुआ है। हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ! हे भरत वंश में बैल! चार्वाक के लिये शोक मत करो।

हतास्ते क्षत्रधर्मेण ज्ञातयस्तव पार्थिव स्वर्गताश्च महात्मानो वीराः क्षत्रियपुंगवाः

O king! Know that all of them have been slain because of the dharma of kṣatriya-s. Those bulls among kṣatriya-s were brave and great-souled and have gone to heaven.

हे राजा! यह जान लो कि ये सभी क्षत्रिय धर्म के कारण मारे गये हैं। क्षत्रियों में वे बैल वीर और महात्मा थे और स्वर्ग चले गये।

स त्वमातिष्ठ कल्याणं मा ते भूद्ग्लानिरच्युत शत्रूञ्जहि प्रजा रक्ष द्विजांश्च प्रतिपालय

O one without decay! You must now do what is good. You should not show weakness. Kill the enemy. Protect the subjects. Sustain the brāhmana-s."
