करालजनक उवाच नानात्वैकत्वमित्युक्तं त्वयैतदृषिसत्तम पश्यामि चाभिसंदिग्धमेतयोर्वै निदर्शनम्

Karālajanaka said: O best of sages, you have spoken about the duality and unity of this. I see the illustration of these two as ambiguous.

करालजनक ने कहा: हे ऋषियों में श्रेष्ठ, आपने इसके द्वैत और एकता के बारे में बात की है। मुझे इन दोनों का चित्रण अस्पष्ट लगता है।

तथाप्रबुद्धबुद्धाभ्यां बुध्यमानस्य चानघ स्थूलबुद्ध्या न पश्यामि तत्त्वमेतन्न संशयः

O sinless one, I do not see the truth with my gross intellect, whether of the Buddha who has awakened, or of the Buddha who is awakening.

हे निष्पाप, मैं अपनी स्थूल बुद्धि से सत्य नहीं देखता, चाहे जागृत बुद्ध का, या जागृत बुद्ध का।

योगकृत्यं तु योगानां ध्यानमेव परं बलम् तच्चापि द्विविधं ध्यानमाहुर्वेदविदो जनाः

The supreme strength of the yogas is meditation, which is the duty of the yogis. And that meditation is said to be of two kinds by the people who know the Vedas.

योगों की सर्वोच्च शक्ति ध्यान है, जो योगियों का कर्तव्य है। और वह ध्यान वेदों को जानने वाले लोग दो प्रकार का कहते हैं।

एकाग्रता च मनसः प्राणायामस्तथैव च प्राणायामस्तु सगुणो निर्गुणो मनसस्तथा

One-pointedness of mind and also prāṇāyāma, Prāṇāyāma is with qualities and also without qualities, and so is the mind.

मन की एकाग्रता और प्राणायाम भी, प्राणायाम गुणों के साथ भी है और गुणों के बिना भी है, और मन भी ऐसा ही है।

मूत्रोत्सर्गे पुरीषे च भोजने च नराधिप त्रिकालं नाभियुञ्जीत शेषं युञ्जीत तत्परः

O king, one should not be engaged in the three times of urination, defecation, and eating. One should be engaged in the rest of the time, being devoted to it.

हे राजन, मनुष्य को मल-मूत्र, शौच और भोजन इन तीन समयों में प्रवृत्त नहीं होना चाहिए। शेष समय में समर्पित रहकर उसी में लगे रहना चाहिए।

The sage, having withdrawn the senses from their objects by the mind, or by ten, twelve, or twenty-four, then beyond that,

विमुक्तः सर्वसङ्गेभ्यो लघ्वाहारो जितेन्द्रियः पूर्वरात्रे परे चैव धारयेत मनोऽऽत्मनि

Freed from all attachments, eating little, with senses controlled, In the first and last watches of the night, he should keep his mind in the Self.

उसे समस्त आसक्तियों से मुक्त होकर, अल्प भोजन करके, इन्द्रियों को वश में करके रात्रि के प्रथम तथा अन्तिम प्रहर में अपने मन को आत्मा में ही रखना चाहिए।

He does not hear, does not smell, does not taste, does not see, does not know touch, does not conceive with the mind.

वह न सुनता है, न सूँघता है, न स्वाद लेता है, न देखता है, न स्पर्श जानता है, न मन से कल्पना करता है।

न चाभिमन्यते किंचिन्न च बुध्यति काष्ठवत् तदा प्रकृतिमापन्नं युक्तमाहुर्मनीषिणः

He does not think of anything, he does not understand anything, like a piece of wood. Then, when he has attained his natural state, the wise call him "united".

वह लकड़ी के टुकड़े की तरह न कुछ सोचता है, न कुछ समझता है। फिर, जब वह अपनी स्वाभाविक अवस्था को प्राप्त कर लेता है, तो बुद्धिमान लोग उसे "एकजुट" कहते हैं।

निवाते च यथा दीप्यन्दीपस्तद्वत्स दृश्यते निरिङ्गश्चाचलश्चोर्ध्वं न तिर्यग्गतिमाप्नुयात्

Just as a lamp burns in a windless place, so you are seen. And you are without a support, immovable, and do not move horizontally or vertically.

जैसे वायुहीन स्थान में दीपक जलता है, वैसे ही आप दिखाई देते हैं। और आप बिना सहारे के हैं, अचल हैं, और क्षैतिज या लंबवत रूप से नहीं चलते हैं।

Then one should see that one, seeing whom it is said, "The inner self is in the heart." O son, he should be known by those like me as the knower.

विधूम इव सप्तार्चिरादित्य इव रश्मिमान् वैद्युतोऽग्निरिवाकाशे दृश्यतेऽऽत्मा तथात्मनि

Just as the sun with its seven rays is seen in the sky, so the Self is seen in the Self. Just as a firebrand is seen in the sky, so the Self is seen in the Self.

जैसे सूर्य अपनी सात किरणों के साथ आकाश में दिखाई देता है, वैसे ही आत्मा में आत्मा दिखाई देती है। जैसे आकाश में अग्नि दिखाई देती है, वैसे ही आत्मा में आत्मा दिखाई देती है।

यं पश्यन्ति महात्मानो धृतिमन्तो मनीषिणः ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मयोनिष्ठा ह्ययोनिममृतात्मकम्

The great ones, the patient ones, the wise ones, the Brahmins who are the source of the Vedas, see him who is without a source and whose Self is immortal.

श्रेष्ठ लोग, धैर्यवान, बुद्धिमान, वेदों के स्रोत ब्राह्मण, उसे देखते हैं जो स्रोत के बिना है और जिसका आत्मा अमर है।

तदेवाहुरणुभ्योऽणु तन्महद्भ्यो महत्तरम् तदन्तः सर्वभूतेषु ध्रुवं तिष्ठन्न दृश्यते

They say that it is smaller than the smallest and greater than the greatest. It abides within all beings, but is not seen.

वे कहते हैं कि यह छोटे से भी छोटा है और सबसे बड़े से भी बड़ा है। यह सभी प्राणियों के भीतर विद्यमान है, परंतु दिखाई नहीं देता।

बुद्धिद्रव्येण दृश्येत मनोदीपेन लोककृत् महतस्तमसस्तात पारे तिष्ठन्नतामसः

The creator of the world is seen by the light of the mind, with the substance of intelligence. O father, he stands on the other side of the great darkness, free from darkness.

संसार के रचयिता को मन के प्रकाश से, बुद्धि के तत्व से देखा जाता है। हे पिता, वह अंधकार से मुक्त होकर महान अंधकार के दूसरी ओर खड़ा है।

स तमोनुद इत्युक्तस्तत्त्वज्ञैर्वेदपारगैः विमलो वितमस्कश्च निर्लिङ्गोऽलिङ्गसंज्ञितः

He is called Tamonuda by those who know the truth and are masters of the Vedas. He is Vimal, Vitaska, Nirlinga, and called Alinga.

सत्य को जानने वाले और वेदों के ज्ञाता लोग उन्हें तमोनुदा कहते हैं। वह विमल, वितस्क, निर्लिंग और अलिंग कहलाता है।

योगमेतद्धि योगानां मन्ये योगस्य लक्षणम् एवं पश्यं प्रपश्यन्ति आत्मानमजरं परम्

I think this is the yoga of all yogas, the characteristic of yoga. Thus seeing, they see the imperishable Self.

मुझे लगता है कि यह सभी योगों में योग है, योग की विशेषता है। इस प्रकार देखकर, वे अविनाशी आत्मा को देखते हैं।

I have told you the truth about this much of the Yoga-darsana. I shall now explain the Sankhya-jnana, the view of the Parisaṃkhyā.

The proponents of the theory of Prakriti say that the unmanifest is the supreme Prakriti. O best of kings, from that, the great one arose, the second.

प्रकृति सिद्धांत के समर्थकों का कहना है कि अव्यक्त ही सर्वोच्च प्रकृति है। हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ, उसी से महान् द्वितीय उत्पन्न हुआ।

अहंकारस्तु महतस्तृतीयमिति नः श्रुतम् पञ्च भूतान्यहंकारादाहुः सांख्यानुदर्शिनः

We have heard that the ego is the third from the great one. The Sankhya philosophers say that the five elements are from the ego.

हमने सुना है कि अहंकार महान से तीसरा है। सांख्य दार्शनिक कहते हैं कि पाँच तत्व अहंकार से हैं।

एताः प्रकृतयस्त्वष्टौ विकाराश्चापि षोडश पञ्च चैव विशेषा वै तथा पञ्चेन्द्रियाणि च

These are the eight primordial natures and the sixteen modifications, and the five specificities, and also the five senses,

ये आठ मौलिक प्रकृतियाँ और सोलह संशोधन, और पाँच विशिष्टताएँ, और पाँच इंद्रियाँ भी हैं,

एतावदेव तत्त्वानां सांख्यमाहुर्मनीषिणः सांख्ये विधिविधानज्ञा नित्यं सांख्यपथे रताः

The wise say that this alone is the truth of the Sankhya. Those who know the rules of the Sankhya, always devoted to the path of the Sankhya,

ज्ञानीजन कहते हैं कि यही सांख्य का सत्य है। जो लोग सांख्य के नियमों को जानते हैं, वे सदैव सांख्य के मार्ग पर समर्पित रहते हैं।

यस्माद्यदभिजायेत तत्तत्रैव प्रलीयते लीयन्ते प्रतिलोमानि सृज्यन्ते चान्तरात्मना

Whatever is born from that, dissolves into that itself. The reverse (of the dissolution) is created by the inner Self.

जो उससे उत्पन्न होता है, वह उसी में विलीन हो जाता है। विपरीत (विघटन का) आंतरिक स्व द्वारा निर्मित होता है।

अनुलोमेन जायन्ते लीयन्ते प्रतिलोमतः गुणा गुणेषु सततं सागरस्योर्मयो यथा

They are born in the order of the qualities and dissolve in the reverse order. The qualities are always in the qualities, like the waves of the ocean.

वे गुणों के क्रम में पैदा होते हैं और विपरीत क्रम में विलीन हो जाते हैं। गुण तो सदा गुणों में ही रहते हैं, जैसे समुद्र की लहरें।

सर्गप्रलय एतावान्प्रकृतेर्नृपसत्तम एकत्वं प्रलये चास्य बहुत्वं च यदासृजत् एवमेव च राजेन्द्र विज्ञेयं ज्ञेयचिन्तकैः

O best of kings, this is the extent of the creation and dissolution of Prakṛti. When it is one in dissolution and many when it creates. O Indra among kings, this is how it should be known by those who contemplate the knowable.

हे राजाओं में श्रेष्ठ, प्रकृति की उत्पत्ति और प्रलय की यही सीमा है। जब वह विघटन में एक होता है और जब सृजन करता है तो अनेक होता है। हे राजाओं में इंद्र, ज्ञेय का चिंतन करने वालों को इसे इसी प्रकार जानना चाहिए।

अधिष्ठातारमव्यक्तमस्याप्येतन्निदर्शनम् एकत्वं च बहुत्वं च प्रकृतेरनु तत्त्ववान् एकत्वं प्रलये चास्य बहुत्वं च प्रवर्तनात्

The presiding deity of this is the unmanifest. This is an example of it. The one who is the knower of the truth of Prakṛti is both one and many. Its oneness is at the time of dissolution, and its manyness is due to its activity.

इसका अधिष्ठाता अव्यक्त है। यह इसका एक उदाहरण है. जो प्रकृति के सत्य को जानता है वह एक भी है और अनेक भी है। इसकी एकता विघटन के समय होती है, और इसकी अनेकता इसकी गतिविधि के कारण होती है।

बहुधात्मा प्रकुर्वीत प्रकृतिं प्रसवात्मिकाम् तच्च क्षेत्रं महानात्मा पञ्चविंशोऽधितिष्ठति

The many-natured one should create the nature that is the source of birth. And that field is presided over by the great-natured one, the twenty-fifth.

बहु-प्रकृति वाले को उस प्रकृति का निर्माण करना चाहिए जो जन्म का स्रोत है। और उस क्षेत्र की अध्यक्षता महान स्वभाव वाले, पच्चीसवें व्यक्ति द्वारा की जाती है।

अधिष्ठातेति राजेन्द्र प्रोच्यते यतिसत्तमैः अधिष्ठानादधिष्ठाता क्षेत्राणामिति नः श्रुतम्

The best of ascetics call him the "Lord" (Adhishthata), O King. We have heard that he is the Lord because he presides over the fields.

हे राजन, सर्वश्रेष्ठ तपस्वी उन्हें "भगवान" (अधिष्ठाता) कहते हैं। हम ने सुना है, कि वह यहोवा है, क्योंकि वह खेतोंपर प्रभुता करता है।

क्षेत्रं जानाति चाव्यक्तं क्षेत्रज्ञ इति चोच्यते अव्यक्तिके पुरे शेते पुरुषश्चेति कथ्यते

He is called the knower of the field because he knows the unmanifest field. He is called the Purusha because he lies in the city of the unmanifest.

उसे क्षेत्र का ज्ञाता कहा जाता है क्योंकि वह अव्यक्त क्षेत्र को जानता है। उसे पुरुष कहा जाता है क्योंकि वह अव्यक्त के शहर में रहता है।

The field is one thing, the knower of the field is said to be another. The field is said to be the unmanifest, the knower is the twenty-fifth.

क्षेत्र एक बात है, क्षेत्र का ज्ञाता कुछ और कहा जाता है। क्षेत्र अव्यक्त कहा गया है, ज्ञाता पच्चीसवां है।

अन्यदेव च ज्ञानं स्यादन्यज्ज्ञेयं तदुच्यते ज्ञानमव्यक्तमित्युक्तं ज्ञेयो वै पञ्चविंशकः

Knowledge is one thing, the knowable is another. This is said to be the knowable. Knowledge is said to be unmanifest, the knowable is the twenty-fifth.

ज्ञान एक चीज़ है, जानने योग्य दूसरी चीज़ है। इसे ज्ञेय कहा गया है। ज्ञान को अव्यक्त कहा गया है, जानने योग्य पच्चीसवां है।

अव्यक्तं क्षेत्रमित्युक्तं तथा सत्त्वं तथेश्वरम् अनीश्वरमतत्त्वं च तत्त्वं तत्पञ्चविंशकम्

The unmanifest is said to be the field, and so is sattva, and so is the Lord. The non-Lord, the non-truth, and the truth, that is the twenty-five.

अव्यक्त को क्षेत्र कहा गया है, सत्त्व को भी और भगवान को भी। अ-भगवान्, अ-सत्य और सत्य ये पच्चीस हैं।

सांख्यदर्शनमेतावत्परिसंख्यानदर्शनम् सांख्यं प्रकुरुते चैव प्रकृतिं च प्रचक्षते

This is the entire Sāṃkhya philosophy, the philosophy of enumeration. Sāṃkhya teaches and describes prakrti.

यह संपूर्ण सांख्य दर्शन, गणना का दर्शन है। सांख्य प्रकृति की शिक्षा और वर्णन करता है।

तत्त्वानि च चतुर्विंशत्परिसंख्याय तत्त्वतः सांख्याः सह प्रकृत्या तु निस्तत्त्वः पञ्चविंशकः

The twenty-four principles are enumerated in truth, The Sankhyas, along with Prakriti, are twenty-five without principles.

सत्य में चौबीस सिद्धांत गिनाये गये हैं, सांख्य प्रकृति सहित पच्चीस सिद्धांत रहित हैं।

पञ्चविंशोऽप्रबुद्धात्मा बुध्यमान इति स्मृतः यदा तु बुध्यतेऽऽत्मानं तदा भवति केवलः

The twenty-fifth is said to be the one who is not awakened, but is awakening. But when he awakens to the Self, then he becomes the sole one.

पच्चीसवाँ वह कहा जाता है जो जागा हुआ नहीं है, बल्कि जागा हुआ है। परंतु जब वह स्वयं के प्रति जागृत हो जाता है, तब वह एकमात्र हो जाता है।

सम्यग्दर्शनमेतावद्भाषितं तव तत्त्वतः एवमेतद्विजानन्तः साम्यतां प्रतियान्त्युत

You have spoken the truth about the right view. Those who know this attain equality.

आपने सम्यक् दृष्टिकोण की सत्य बात कही है। जो लोग इसे जानते हैं उन्हें समता प्राप्त होती है।

सम्यङ्निदर्शनं नाम प्रत्यक्षं प्रकृतेस्तथा गुणतत्त्वान्यथैतानि निर्गुणोऽन्यस्तथा भवेत्

The right view is direct perception of Prakriti and the qualities. And these are the principles of the qualities. The one without qualities is different from them.

प्रकृति और गुणों का प्रत्यक्ष बोध ही सम्यक दृष्टि है। और ये गुणों के सिद्धांत हैं. जिसमें गुण नहीं वह उनसे भिन्न है।

न त्वेवं वर्तमानानामावृत्तिर्विद्यते पुनः विद्यतेऽक्षरभावत्वादपरस्परमव्ययम्

But there is no return for those who are present in this way. There is no destruction of each other because of the state of being imperishable.

लेकिन जो लोग इस तरह मौजूद हैं उनके लिए कोई वापसी नहीं है। अविनाशी स्थिति के कारण एक दूसरे का विनाश नहीं होता।

पश्येरन्नेकमतयो न सम्यक्तेषु दर्शनम् तेऽव्यक्तं प्रतिपद्यन्ते पुनः पुनररिंदम

Those who have different views do not see them correctly. O subduer of enemies, they again and again attain the unmanifest.

जो लोग अलग-अलग विचार रखते हैं वे उन्हें सही ढंग से नहीं देख पाते। हे शत्रुओं को वश में करने वाले, वे बार-बार अव्यक्त को प्राप्त करते हैं।

सर्वमेतद्विजानन्तो न सर्वस्य प्रबोधनात् व्यक्तीभूता भविष्यन्ति व्यक्तस्य वशवर्तिनः

Knowing all this, they will not awaken all beings, but will become manifest for those who are ready to be guided.

यह सब जानकर, वे सभी प्राणियों को जागृत नहीं करेंगे, बल्कि उन लोगों के लिए प्रकट होंगे जो मार्गदर्शन के लिए तैयार हैं।

All is unmanifest, it is said. The twenty-fifth is not all. Those who know him have no fear.
