भीष्म उवाच अथ तेन नरश्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणेन तपस्विना निराहारेण वसता दुःखितास्ते भुजंगमाः

Bhishma said: Then, O best of men, by that ascetic brahmin, while living without food, those serpents were afflicted.

भीष्म ने कहा: तब हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ, उस तपस्वी ब्राह्मण द्वारा निराहार रहने से उन नागों को कष्ट हुआ।

सर्वे संभूय सहितास्तस्य नागस्य बान्धवाः भ्रातरस्तनया भार्या ययुस्तं ब्राह्मणं प्रति

All the relatives of that nāga, brothers, sons, and wife, having come together, went to that brāhmaṇa.

उस नागा के सभी रिश्तेदार, भाई, पुत्र और पत्नी एकत्र होकर उस ब्राह्मण के पास गए।

तेऽपश्यन्पुलिने तं वै विविक्ते नियतव्रतम् समासीनं निराहारं द्विजं जप्यपरायणम्

They saw him on the bank, in a secluded place, of controlled vows, sitting without food, a brahmin devoted to muttering prayers.

उन्होंने उसे तट पर एक एकांत स्थान पर, संयमित व्रतधारी, बिना भोजन के बैठा हुआ, एक ब्राह्मण, जो प्रार्थना करने में समर्पित था, देखा।

ते सर्वे समभिक्रम्य विप्रमभ्यर्च्य चासकृत् ऊचुर्वाक्यमसंदिग्धमातिथेयस्य बान्धवाः

All of them approached him, honored the brahmin repeatedly, and spoke these words to the relatives of the guest, without any doubt.

वे सब उसके पास आये, बार-बार ब्राह्मण का आदर-सत्कार किया और बिना किसी सन्देह के अतिथि के सम्बन्धियों से ये बातें कहीं।

षष्ठो हि दिवसस्तेऽद्य प्राप्तस्येह तपोधन न चाभिलषसे किंचिदाहारं धर्मवत्सल

O you who are rich in austerities, today is the sixth day since you came here, And you, who are devoted to righteousness, do not desire any food.

हे तपस्या में धनवान, तुम्हें यहाँ आए आज छठा दिन हो गया है, और तुम, जो धर्म में समर्पित हो, किसी भी भोजन की इच्छा नहीं रखते।

अस्मानभिगतश्चासि वयं च त्वामुपस्थिताः कार्यं चातिथ्यमस्माभिर्वयं सर्वे कुटुम्बिनः

You have come to us, and we have come to you. It is our duty to be hospitable, for we are all householders.

आप हमारे पास आए हैं, और हम आपके पास आए हैं। सत्कार करना हमारा कर्तव्य है, क्योंकि हम सब गृहस्थ हैं।

मूलं फलं वा पर्णं वा पयो वा द्विजसत्तम आहारहेतोरन्नं वा भोक्तुमर्हसि ब्राह्मण

O best of Brahmins, you may eat the root, fruit, leaf, or milk, or food for the sake of sustenance.

हे ब्राह्मण श्रेष्ठ, आप जीविका के लिए जड़, फल, पत्ती, दूध या भोजन खा सकते हैं।

त्यक्ताहारेण भवता वने निवसता सता बालवृद्धमिदं सर्वं पीड्यते धर्मसंकटात्

You, who have given up food and are living in the forest, all this, the young and the old, is oppressed by the narrowness of the Dharma.

आप जो अन्न त्याग कर वन में रह रहे हैं, ये सभी युवा और वृद्ध धर्म की संकीर्णता से पीड़ित हैं।

न हि नो भ्रूणहा कश्चिद्राजापथ्योऽनृतोऽपि वा पूर्वाशी वा कुले ह्यस्मिन्देवतातिथिबन्धुषु

No one in our family has ever been a child-killer, a thief, a liar, or a person who eats before his guests and relatives.

हमारे परिवार में कोई भी कभी भी बच्चों का हत्यारा, चोर, झूठा या मेहमानों और रिश्तेदारों के सामने खाना खाने वाला व्यक्ति नहीं रहा।

ब्राह्मण उवाच उपदेशेन युष्माकमाहारोऽयं मया वृतः द्विरूनं दशरात्रं वै नागस्यागमनं प्रति

The Brāhmaṇa said: This food has been chosen by me on your advice. For nine nights less two, the Nāga will come.

ब्राह्मण ने कहा: यह भोजन मैंने आपकी सलाह पर चुना है। दो रातें कम नौ रातों के लिए नागा आएंगे।

यद्यष्टरात्रे निर्याते नागमिष्यति पन्नगः तदाहारं करिष्यामि तन्निमित्तमिदं व्रतम्

If the snake does not return after eight nights, I will eat it. This is the reason for this vow.

यदि आठ रातों के बाद भी साँप वापस नहीं आया तो मैं उसे खा लूँगा। यही इस व्रत का कारण है.

कर्तव्यो न च संतापो गम्यतां च यथागतम् तन्निमित्तं व्रतं मह्यं नैतद्भेत्तुमिहार्हथ

Do not be distressed. Go back the way you came. For this reason, I have taken a vow. You should not break it.

परेशान मत होइए. जिस रास्ते से आये हो उसी रास्ते से वापस जाओ. इसी कारण मैंने प्रतिज्ञा की है। आपको इसे नहीं तोड़ना चाहिए.

भीष्म उवाच तेन ते समनुज्ञाता ब्राह्मणेन भुजंगमाः स्वमेव भवनं जग्मुरकृतार्था नरर्षभ

Bhishma said: O bull among men, those snakes were permitted by the brahmin to go to their own abode, but they did not accomplish their purpose.

भीष्म ने कहा: हे नरश्रेष्ठ, उन साँपों को ब्राह्मण ने अपने निवास स्थान पर जाने की अनुमति दी थी, लेकिन उन्होंने अपना उद्देश्य पूरा नहीं किया।
