वैशंपायन उवाच ततः कृष्णस्य तद्वाक्यं धर्मार्थसहितं हितम् श्रुत्वा शांतनवो भीष्मः प्रत्युवाच कृताञ्जलिः

Vaiśampāyana said: On hearing Kṛṣṇā's words, full of dharma and artha, Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, joined his hands in salutation and spoke these words to him.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: कृष्ण के धर्म और अर्थ से भरे शब्दों को सुनकर शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने नमस्कार करते हुए हाथ जोड़े और उनसे ये शब्द बोले।

लोकनाथ महाबाहो शिव नारायणाच्युत तव वाक्यमभिश्रुत्य हर्षेणास्मि परिप्लुतः

"O lord of the worlds! O mighty-armed one! O Śivā! O Nārāyaṇa! O Acyuta! Having heard your words, I am flooded with delight. You are the lord of speech.

"हे विश्वों के स्वामी! हे महाबाहु! हे शिव! हे नारायण! हे अच्युत! आपके वचन सुनकर मैं प्रसन्नता से भर गया हूं। आप वाणी के स्वामी हैं।

किं चाहमभिधास्यामि वाक्पते तव संनिधौ यदा वाचोगतं सर्वं तव वाचि समाहितम्

What can I say in your presence? Everything that can be said exists in your words.

मैं आपकी उपस्थिति में क्या कह सकता हूँ? जो कुछ भी कहा जा सकता है वह आपके शब्दों में मौजूद है।

यद्धि किंचित्कृतं लोके कर्तव्यं क्रियते च यत् त्वत्तस्तन्निःसृतं देव लोका बुद्धिमया हि ते

O god! Whatever has been done in this world, what should be done, and what is being done, all emanate from you. The worlds are pervaded by your intelligence.

रब्बा बे! इस संसार में जो कुछ भी किया गया है, जो किया जाना चाहिए और जो किया जा रहा है, वह सब आपसे ही उत्पन्न होता है। संसार आपकी बुद्धि से व्याप्त है।

कथयेद्देवलोकं यो देवराजसमीपतः धर्मकामार्थशास्त्राणां सोऽर्थान्ब्रूयात्तवाग्रतः

In the presence of the king of the gods, who can speak about the world of the gods? Before you, only such a person can talk about dharma, kāmā and artha in the sacred texts.

देवताओं के राजा की उपस्थिति में, देवताओं की दुनिया के बारे में कौन बोल सकता है? आपसे पहले, केवल ऐसा व्यक्ति ही पवित्र ग्रंथों में धर्म, काम और अर्थ के बारे में बात कर सकता है।

शराभिघाताद्व्यथितं मनो मे मधुसूदन गात्राणि चावसीदन्ति न च बुद्धिः प्रसीदति

O Madhusūdana! My mind is suffering from the wounds of these arrows. My limbs are weak and my intelligence is unclear.

हे मधुसूदन! मेरा मन इन बाणों के घावों से पीड़ित है। मेरे अंग कमज़ोर हैं और मेरी बुद्धि अस्पष्ट है।

न च मे प्रतिभा काचिदस्ति किंचित्प्रभाषितुम् पीड्यमानस्य गोविन्द विषानलसमैः शरैः

I lack the capacity to talk about anything. O Govinda! These arrows are like poison and the fire and are oppressing me.

मुझमें किसी भी विषय पर बात करने की क्षमता नहीं है। हे गोविंद! ये बाण विष और अग्नि के समान हैं और मुझ पर अत्याचार कर रहे हैं।

बलं मेधाः प्रजरति प्राणाः संत्वरयन्ति च मर्माणि परितप्यन्ते भ्रान्तं चेतस्तथैव च

My great strength is leaving. My breath of life is ebbing away. My inner organs are scorched. My consciousness is distracted.

मेरी बड़ी ताकत जा रही है. मेरे जीवन की साँसें थम रही हैं। मेरे अंदरूनी अंग झुलस गये हैं. मेरी चेतना विचलित है.

दौर्बल्यात्सज्जते वाङ्मे स कथं वक्तुमुत्सहे साधु मे त्वं प्रसीदस्व दाशार्हकुलनन्दन

The weakness is affecting my words. How can I be interested in speaking? O virtuous one! O descendant of the Dāśārha lineage! Show me your favours.

कमजोरी का असर मेरी बातों पर पड़ रहा है. मुझे बोलने में रुचि कैसे हो सकती है? हे धर्मात्मा! हे दशार्ह वंश के वंशज! मुझे अपना एहसान दिखाओ.

तत्क्षमस्व महाबाहो न ब्रूयां किंचिदच्युत त्वत्संनिधौ च सीदेत वाचस्पतिरपि ब्रुवन्

O mighty-armed one! Pardon me. O Acyuta! I will not say anything. In your presence, even Vācaspati would refrain from speaking.

हे महाबाहु! मुझे क्षमा करें। हे अच्युत! मैं कुछ नहीं कहूंगा। आपकी उपस्थिति में वाचस्पति भी बोलने से कतराते थे।

न दिशः संप्रजानामि नाकाशं न च मेदिनीम् केवलं तव वीर्येण तिष्ठामि मधुसूदन

I cannot distinguish the directions, nor the sky or the earth. O Madhusūdana! It is only because of your valour that I am still here.

मैं न तो दिशाओं को पहचान सकता हूं, न ही आकाश या पृथ्वी को। हे मधुसूदन! आपकी वीरता के कारण ही मैं अब तक यहां हूं।

स्वयमेव प्रभो तस्माद्धर्मराजस्य यद्धितम् तद्ब्रवीह्याशु सर्वेषामागमानां त्वमागमः

O lord! You should yourself quickly tell Dharmarāja about what is beneficial. You are the learning that is there in all the sacred texts.

हे भगवान! आपको स्वयं ही धर्मराज को शीघ्र बता देना चाहिए कि क्या लाभदायक है। आप वह विद्या हैं जो सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों में मौजूद है।

कथं त्वयि स्थिते लोके शाश्वते लोककर्तरि प्रब्रूयान्मद्विधः कश्चिद्गुरौ शिष्य इव स्थिते

You are the eternal doer in the worlds. When you are present in the world, how can someone like me speak? That will be like a disciple before a preceptor."

आप लोकों में नित्य कर्ता हैं। जब आप दुनिया में मौजूद हैं तो मेरे जैसा कोई कैसे बोल सकता है? वह गुरु के सामने एक शिष्य के समान होगा।"

वासुदेव उवाच उपपन्नमिदं वाक्यं कौरवाणां धुरंधरे महावीर्ये महासत्त्वे स्थिते सर्वार्थदर्शिनि

Vāsudeva replied, "O one who has borne the great burden of the Kaurava-s! These words are worthy of you. You are immensely valorous and are established in great spirits. You can see the purpose behind everything.

वासुदेव ने उत्तर दिया, "हे कौरवों का महान भार उठाने वाले! ये शब्द आपके योग्य हैं। आप अत्यधिक वीर हैं और महान आत्माओं में स्थापित हैं। आप हर चीज के पीछे उद्देश्य देख सकते हैं।

यच्च मामात्थ गाङ्गेय बाणघातरुजं प्रति गृहाणात्र वरं भीष्म मत्प्रसादकृतं विभो

O Gāṅgeya! You have spoken to me about the pain from the wounds of these storms of arrows. O Bhīṣma! O lord! Through my favours, accept a boon from me.

हे गांगेय! तुमने मुझसे इन तीरों के तूफानों के घावों के दर्द के बारे में बात की है। हे भीष्म! हे भगवान! मेरे उपकार से तुम मुझसे वरदान स्वीकार करो।

न ते ग्लानिर्न ते मूर्छा न दाहो न च ते रुजा प्रभविष्यन्ति गाङ्गेय क्षुत्पिपासे न चाप्युत

O Gāṅgeya! You will not be affected by debility, unconsciousness, fever, pain, hunger and thirst.

हे गांगेय! आप पर दुर्बलता, मूर्च्छा, ज्वर, पीड़ा, भूख-प्यास का प्रभाव नहीं पड़ेगा।

ज्ञानानि च समग्राणि प्रतिभास्यन्ति तेऽनघ न च ते क्वचिदासक्तिर्बुद्धेः प्रादुर्भविष्यति

O unblemished one! All knowledge will manifest itself before you. Your intelligence will be clear and will not be distracted.

हे निष्कलंक! सारा ज्ञान आपके सामने प्रकट हो जायेगा। आपकी बुद्धि स्पष्ट होगी और विचलित नहीं होगी।

सत्त्वस्थं च मनो नित्यं तव भीष्म भविष्यति रजस्तमोभ्यां रहितं घनैर्मुक्त इवोडुराट्

O Bhīṣma! There will always be spirit in your mind. You will like the king of the stars, free of the clouds and without dusk and darkness.

हे भीष्म! आपके मन में हमेशा जोश रहेगा. आपको सितारों का राजा पसंद आएगा, जो बादलों से मुक्त, सांझ और अंधेरे से रहित होगा।

यद्यच्च धर्मसंयुक्तमर्थयुक्तमथापि वा चिन्तयिष्यसि तत्राग्र्या बुद्धिस्तव भविष्यति

Whenever you think about dharma and artha, your intelligence will back this up first.

जब भी आप धर्म और अर्थ के बारे में सोचेंगे तो आपकी बुद्धि सबसे पहले इसका समर्थन करेगी।

इमं च राजशार्दूल भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम् चक्षुर्दिव्यं समाश्रित्य द्रक्ष्यस्यमितविक्रम

O tiger among kings! O infinitely valorous one! By resorting to your divine sight, you will be able to see the four kinds of beings that have been created.

हे राजाओं में व्याघ्र! हे परम शूरवीर! आप अपनी दिव्य दृष्टि का सहारा लेकर निर्मित किये गये चार प्रकार के प्राणियों को देख सकेंगे।

चतुर्विधं प्रजाजालं संयुक्तो ज्ञानचक्षुषा भीष्म द्रक्ष्यसि तत्त्वेन जले मीन इवामले

O Bhīṣma! Through the sight of knowledge, you will be able to see the truth about the four kinds of beings, like a fish in clear water."

हे भीष्म! ज्ञान की दृष्टि के माध्यम से, आप साफ पानी में मछली की तरह, चार प्रकार के प्राणियों के बारे में सच्चाई देख पाएंगे।"

वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्ते व्याससहिताः सर्व एव महर्षयः ऋग्यजुःसामसंयुक्तैर्वचोभिः कृष्णमर्चयन्

Vaiśampāyana said: With Vyāsa, all the maharṣi-s worshipped Kṛṣṇā with hymns and words from the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda and the Samā Veda.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: व्यास के साथ, सभी महर्षियों ने ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद और सामवेद के भजनों और शब्दों के साथ कृष्ण की पूजा की।

ततः सर्वार्तवं दिव्यं पुष्पवर्षं नभस्तलात् पपात यत्र वार्ष्णेयः सगाङ्गेयः सपाण्डवः

In every direction, a divine shower of flowers rained down from the sky and fell down at the spot where Vārṣṇeya, Gāṅgeya and the Pāṇḍava-s were.

हर दिशा में, आकाश से फूलों की दिव्य वर्षा होने लगी और उस स्थान पर गिरी जहाँ वाष्र्णेय, गांगेय और पांडव थे।

वादित्राणि च दिव्यानि जगुश्चाप्सरसां गणाः न चाहितमनिष्टं वा किंचित्तत्र व्यदृश्यत

Celestial instruments were sounded and large numbers of āpsara-s arrived there. Nothing unpleasant was seen anywhere there.

दिव्य यंत्र बजने लगे और बड़ी संख्या में अप्सराएँ वहाँ पहुँच गईं। वहां कहीं भी कुछ भी अप्रिय नजर नहीं आया.

ववौ शिवः सुखो वायुः सर्वगन्धवहः शुचिः शान्तायां दिशि शान्ताश्च प्रावदन्मृगपक्षिणः

An auspicious and pleasant wind began to blow and it carried all the fragrant and sacred scents. The directions were calm and the animals and the birds also became calm.

एक शुभ और सुखद हवा चलने लगी और उसमें सभी सुगंधित और पवित्र सुगंधियाँ आने लगीं। दिशाएँ शांत हो गईं और पशु-पक्षी भी शांत हो गए।

ततो मुहूर्ताद्भगवान्सहस्रांशुर्दिवाकरः दहन्वनमिवैकान्ते प्रतीच्यां प्रत्यदृश्यत

In an instant, the illustrious sun god, with the one thousand rays, was seen in the west, like a fire burning the extremity of a forest.

एक पल में, एक हजार किरणों के साथ शानदार सूर्य देव, पश्चिम में दिखाई दिए, जैसे आग जंगल के छोर को जला रही हो।

ततो महर्षयः सर्वे समुत्थाय जनार्दनम् भीष्ममामन्त्रयां चक्रू राजानं च युधिष्ठिरम्

All the maharṣi-s arose and honoured Janārdana, Bhīṣma and King Yudhiṣṭhira.

सभी महर्षि उठे और जनार्दन, भीष्म और राजा युधिष्ठिर का सम्मान किया।

ततः प्रणाममकरोत्केशवः पाण्डवस्तथा सात्यकिः संजयश्चैव स च शारद्वतः कृपः

Keśava bowed before them, and so did the Pāṇḍava-s, Sātyaki, Sañjaya and Kṛpa Śāradvata.

केशव ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया, और पांडवों, सात्यकि, संजय और कृपाशारद्वत ने भी उन्हें प्रणाम किया।

ततस्ते धर्मनिरताः सम्यक्तैरभिपूजिताः श्वः समेष्याम इत्युक्त्वा यथेष्टं त्वरिता ययुः

When those who were always devoted to dharmawere honoured in the proper way, they said, "We will return tomorrow," and quickly left, as they wished.

जब उन लोगों का जो सदैव धर्म के प्रति समर्पित थे, उचित तरीके से सम्मान किया गया, तो उन्होंने कहा, "हम कल लौटेंगे," और अपनी इच्छानुसार तुरंत चले गए।

तथैवामन्त्र्य गाङ्गेयं केशवस्ते च पाण्डवाः प्रदक्षिणमुपावृत्य रथानारुरुहुः शुभान्

Keśava and the Pāṇḍava-s took their leave of Gāṅgeya. They circumambulated him and ascended their sparkling chariots.

केशव और पांडवों ने गांगेय से विदा ली। उन्होंने उसकी परिक्रमा की और अपने चमचमाते रथों पर चढ़ गये।

ततो रथैः काञ्चनदन्तकूबरै;र्महीधराभैः समदैश्च दन्तिभिः हयैः सुपर्णैरिव चाशुगामिभिः; पदातिभिश्चात्तशरासनादिभिः

The poles of those chariots were decorated with gold and ivory. There were crazy tuskers that looked like mountains. There were horses that were as swift as eagles. There were foot soldiers with bows and arrows.

उन रथों के खंभों को सोने और हाथीदांत से सजाया गया था। वहाँ पागल हाथी थे जो पहाड़ों की तरह दिखते थे। वहाँ ऐसे घोड़े थे जो उकाबों के समान तेज़ थे। वहाँ पैदल सैनिक धनुष-बाण लिये हुए थे।

ययौ रथानां पुरतो हि सा चमू;स्तथैव पश्चादतिमात्रसारिणी पुरश्च पश्चाच्च यथा महानदी; पुरर्क्षवन्तं गिरिमेत्य नर्मदा

Extremely fast, that army advanced in front and to the rear of those chariots. In front and to the rear, it was like the great river Narmadā, separated into two by Mount Ṛkṣavat.

वह सेना अत्यंत तीव्र गति से उन रथों के आगे और पीछे की ओर आगे बढ़ी। आगे और पीछे, यह महान नदी नर्मदा की तरह थी, जो क्ष्वावत पर्वत द्वारा दो भागों में विभाजित हो गई थी।

ततः पुरस्ताद्भगवान्निशाकरः; समुत्थितस्तामभिहर्षयंश्चमूम् दिवाकरापीतरसास्तथौषधीः; पुनः स्वकेनैव गुणेन योजयन्

In the east, the illustrious moon arose, delighting the army. The sun had drunk up the juice from the herbs and it again restored their original qualities.

पूर्व में, सेना को प्रसन्न करते हुए, शानदार चंद्रमा उग आया। सूरज ने जड़ी-बूटियों का रस पी लिया था और उसने फिर से अपने मूल गुणों को बहाल कर दिया था।

ततः पुरं सुरपुरसंनिभद्युति; प्रविश्य ते यदुवृषपाण्डवास्तदा यथोचितान्भवनवरान्समाविश;ञ्श्रमान्विता मृगपतयो गुहा इव

The bulls among the Yadu-s and the Pāṇḍava-s entered the city, which was as radiant as a city of the gods. They were exhausted and entered those supreme and appropriate abodes, like the lord of deer returning to a cave.

यदुओं और पांडवों के बैलों ने उस नगर में प्रवेश किया, जो देवताओं के नगर के समान दीप्तिमान था। वे थक गये और उन सर्वोच्च तथा उचित लोकों में प्रवेश कर गये, जैसे मृगराज गुफा में लौट रहे हों।
