Anushasanaparvan · v1

Yudhisthira said: I wish to hear in full the virtues of non-violence, of the Dharma, and of the devotees. Please tell me that, O Grandfather.

Anushasanaparvan · v2

Bhishma said: The hunter, having left the village of the king of Kashi, took a poisoned arrow and went hunting for a deer.

Anushasanaparvan · v3

There, a hunter greedy for meat, in a great forest, having seen a deer not far away, drew his bow.

Anushasanaparvan · v4

With that arrow of the sign of the fickle, which was not to be warded off, a great forest tree was pierced by one who wanted to kill a deer.

Anushasanaparvan · v5

The tree, struck by the arrow poisoned with virulent poison, abandoned its fruits and leaves and dried up.

Anushasanaparvan · v6

The parrot, who had lived for a long time in the hollows of that tree, did not leave it, out of devotion to that tree.

Anushasanaparvan · v7

He was motionless, not eating, sick, and his speech was weak. The righteous one, grateful, withered away with the tree.

Anushasanaparvan · v8

Seeing that great being, whose conduct was superhuman, and knowing that he was indifferent to pain and pleasure, the Lord of the Dead was amazed.

Anushasanaparvan · v9

Then Sakra, having become thoughtful, said: "How is it that this Brāhman, though born in the animal world, has taken up a course of non-violence which is not to be expected?"

Anushasanaparvan · v10

Or rather, it is not surprising, for Vasava thought: "All is seen everywhere by all beings here.

Anushasanaparvan · v11

Then, assuming a human form in the guise of a brahmin, Shakra descended to earth and said to the bird:

Anushasanaparvan · v12

O Śuka, best of birds, you are the son of Dakṣa's daughter. I ask you, why do you not abandon this dry tree?

Anushasanaparvan · v13

Then, when asked, Shuka bowed his head and said: "Welcome, O King of the Gods! You are known to me through my austerities."

Anushasanaparvan · v14

Then the one with ten hundred eyes said, "Well done, well done!" And thus, "Ah, wisdom!" He was then honored with austerities.

Anushasanaparvan · v15

Knowing that he was a good doer of deeds, that parrot, the supreme upholder of dharma, the destroyer of Bala's army asked him about that attainment.

Anushasanaparvan · v16

Why do you resort to this tree, which is leafless, fruitless, dry, and without shelter for birds, when there is this great forest?

Anushasanaparvan · v17

There are many other trees in this great forest, with branches covered with leaves, good, with plenty of room to move about.

Anushasanaparvan · v18

One whose life is over, who is powerless, whose essence is exhausted, whose glory is destroyed, The wise one, having considered with wisdom, should abandon this unsteady tree.

Anushasanaparvan · v19

Hearing what was spoken by Indra, the righteous Shukra sighed deeply and sadly spoke these words:

Anushasanaparvan · v20

O Lord of Shachi, the gods are not to be transgressed. Where there is existence, there is existence. Know this, O Lord of the Gods.

Anushasanaparvan · v21

In this tree I was born, endowed with good qualities, and in my childhood I was protected and not harmed by enemies.

Anushasanaparvan · v22

O sinless one, why do you produce in me the fruitlessness of compassion? For one who is devoted to non-violence, who is attached to his devotee, and who follows him,

Anushasanaparvan · v23

Compassion is a great characteristic of the Dharma for the virtuous. And compassion for the virtuous always bestows joy.

Anushasanaparvan · v24

You alone are asked by all the gods about doubts in Dharma. Therefore, O god, you are established as the lord of the gods.

Anushasanaparvan · v25

O Thousand-eyed One, you should not abandon me here, after having shown me your affection. How can I abandon this capable one, whom I have been supporting?

Anushasanaparvan · v26

The chastiser of Paka, pleased by his gentle words, spoke to the parrot, pleased by his knowledge of dharma and non-violence.

Anushasanaparvan · v27

Then the parrot asked for a boon, saying, "Grant me a boon." He asked for the boon of always being compassionate and being born from that tree.

Anushasanaparvan · v28

And Śakra, having known the firm morality of the parrot, was pleased and quickly sprinkled the tree with nectar.

Anushasanaparvan · v29

Then the fruits, leaves, and branches became delightful. Due to the firm devotion of the parrot, the tree became prosperous.

Anushasanaparvan · v30

And Śuka, by that act of non-violence, at the end of his life, O great king, attained the world of Indra.

Anushasanaparvan · v31

In the same way, O Lord of men, he who has devotion and is devoted to you, attains the accomplishment of all his aims, just as a tree attains it by reaching the top of a mountain.
