लोमश उवाच समुद्रं ते समाश्रित्य वारुणं निधिमम्भसाम् कालेयाः संप्रवर्तन्त त्रैलोक्यस्य विनाशने

Lomaśa said: "When they had sought refuge in the ocean that was Vāruṇa's abode, the Kāleya-s began to act for the destruction of the three worlds.

लोमश ने कहा: "जब उन्होंने वरुण के निवास स्थान महासागर में शरण ली, तो कालेय ने तीनों लोकों के विनाश के लिए कार्य करना शुरू कर दिया।

ते रात्रौ समभिक्रुद्धा भक्षयन्ति सदा मुनीन् आश्रमेषु च ये सन्ति पुन्येष्वायतनेषु च

In their wrath, in the night, they always devoured sages and virtuous ones in hermitages and sacred places.

अपने क्रोध के कारण वे रात्रि में सदैव आश्रमों तथा पवित्र स्थानों में साधु-संतों तथा सज्जनों को भस्म कर देते थे।

वसिष्ठस्याश्रमे विप्रा भक्षितास्तैर्दुरात्मभिः अशीतिशतमष्टौ च नव चान्ये तपस्विनः

In Vāsiṣṭha's hermitage, the evil-souled ones devoured one hundred and eightyeight brāhmana-s and nine other ascetics.

वसिष्ठ के आश्रम में, दुष्टात्माओं ने एक सौ अट्ठाईस ब्राह्मणों और नौ अन्य तपस्वियों को खा लिया।

च्यवनस्याश्रमं गत्वा पुण्यं द्विजनिषेवितम् फलमूलाशनानां हि मुनीनां भक्षितं शतम्

On going to Cyavana's sacred hermitage, frequented by brāhmana-s, they devoured one hundred sages who lived on fruit and roots.

च्यवन के पवित्र आश्रम में, जहाँ ब्राह्मण अक्सर आते रहते थे, जाकर उन्होंने फल और मूल खाकर जीने वाले एक सौ ऋषियों को खा लिया।

एवं रात्रौ स्म कुर्वन्ति विविशुश्चार्णवं दिवा भरद्वाजाश्रमे चैव नियता ब्रह्मचारिणः वाय्वाहाराम्बुभक्षाश्च विंशतिः संनिपातिताः

They thus acted during the night. During the day, they entered the ocean. In Bhāradvāja's hermitage, they destroyed twenty brahmacharis who lived on air and water.

उन्होंने इस प्रकार रात के दौरान कार्य किया। दिन के दौरान, वे समुद्र में प्रवेश कर गये। भारद्वाज के आश्रम में, उन्होंने हवा और पानी पर रहने वाले बीस ब्रह्मचारियों को नष्ट कर दिया।

एवं क्रमेण सर्वांस्तानाश्रमान्दानवास्तदा निशायां परिधावन्ति मत्ता भुजबलाश्रयात् कालोपसृष्टाः कालेया घ्नन्तो द्विजगणान्बहून्

In this way, one after another, the dānava-s destroyed all the hermitages. Intoxicated by the strength of their arms and overcome by destiny, the Kāleya-s chased and killed many masses of brāhmana-s in the night.

इस प्रकार एक के बाद एक दानवों ने सभी आश्रमों को नष्ट कर दिया। अपनी भुजाओं के बल के नशे में और भाग्य से पराजित होकर, कालेयों ने रात में कई ब्राह्मणों का पीछा किया और उन्हें मार डाला।

न चैनानन्वबुध्यन्त मनुजा मनुजोत्तम एवं प्रवृत्तान्दैत्यांस्तांस्तापसेषु तपस्विषु

O supreme among men! Nevertheless, though the daitya-s acted in this way towards hermits and ascetics, men did not know this.

हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! फिर भी, यद्यपि दैत्यों ने साधु-संन्यासियों के प्रति इस प्रकार का व्यवहार किया, परंतु मनुष्यों को यह पता नहीं था।

प्रभाते समदृश्यन्त नियताहारकर्शिताः महीतलस्था मुनयः शरीरैर्गतजीवितैः

In the morning, the bodies of sages, emaciated from restrained diets, would be seen, lifeless on the ground.

सुबह-सुबह संयमित आहार-विहार से क्षीण ऋषि-मुनियों के शरीर जमीन पर बेजान नजर आते थे।

क्षीणमांसैर्विरुधिरैर्विमज्जान्त्रैर्विसंधिभिः आकीर्णैराचिता भूमिः शङ्खानामिव राशिभिः

The earth was full of bodies without flesh, without blood, without marrow and without entrails, with masses of bones strewn like conch shells.

पृथ्वी बिना मांस, बिना खून, बिना मज्जा और बिना अंतड़ियों के शवों से भरी हुई थी, और शंख के समान हड्डियों के ढेर बिखरे हुए थे।

कलशैर्विप्रविद्धैश्च स्रुवैर्भग्नैस्तथैव च विकीर्णैरग्निहोत्रैश्च भूर्बभूव समावृता

The earth was covered with broken sacrificial pots and ladles and the remains of agnihotra sacrifices.

पृथ्वी टूटे हुए यज्ञपात्रों, करछुलों तथा अग्निहोत्र यज्ञों के अवशेषों से पटी हुई थी।

निःस्वाध्यायवषट्कारं नष्टयज्ञोत्सवक्रियम् जगदासीन्निरुत्साहं कालेयभयपीडितम्

Oppressed by the fear of the Kāleya-s, the world lost all enterprise. Studying of the Veda-s and the uttering of exclamations at the time of making oblations ceased. Sacrifices and rituals were destroyed.

कालिया-स के भय से पीड़ित होकर, दुनिया ने सभी उद्यम खो दिए। वेदों का अध्ययन और आहुति देते समय उद्घोष का उच्चारण बंद हो गया। यज्ञ एवं अनुष्ठान नष्ट कर दिये गये।

एवं प्रक्षीयमाणाश्च मानवा मनुजेश्वर आत्मत्राणपरा भीताः प्राद्रवन्त दिशो भयात्

O lord of men! When men began to decay in this fashion, they were scared and in an attempt to save themselves, fled in all the directions.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! जब मनुष्य इस प्रकार पतन करने लगे तो वे भयभीत हो गये और स्वयं को बचाने के प्रयास में सभी दिशाओं में भागने लगे।

केचिद्गुहाः प्रविविशुर्निर्झरांश्चापरे श्रिताः अपरे मरणोद्विग्ना भयात्प्रानान्समुत्सृजन्

Some entered caves and others hid behind waterfalls. Still others were so anxious about death that they lost their lives out of fear.

कुछ गुफाओं में घुस गए और कुछ झरनों के पीछे छिप गए। फिर भी अन्य लोग मृत्यु के बारे में इतने चिंतित थे कि उन्होंने डर के मारे अपनी जान गँवा दी।

केचिदत्र महेष्वासाः शूराः परमदर्पिताः मार्गमाणाः परं यत्नं दानवानां प्रचक्रिरे

There were those who were brave and great archers. In great pride and with great care, they tried to hunt down the dānava-s.

वहाँ वे लोग थे जो वीर और महान धनुर्धर थे। बड़े गर्व के साथ और बड़ी सावधानी से, उन्होंने दानवों का शिकार करने की कोशिश की।

न चैतानधिजग्मुस्ते समुद्रं समुपाश्रितान् श्रमं जग्मुश्च परममाजग्मुः क्षयमेव च

But they could not find them, because they had sought shelter in the ocean. Failing to find them, they were destroyed because of the exhaustion.

परन्तु वे उन्हें न पा सके, क्योंकि उन्होंने समुद्र में शरण ली थी। उन्हें ढूंढने में असफल रहने पर थकावट के कारण वे नष्ट हो गये।

जगत्युपशमं याते नष्टयज्ञोत्सवक्रिये आजग्मुः परमामार्तिं त्रिदशा मनुजेश्वर

O lord of men! The world neared destruction and all sacrifices and rituals were destroyed. The thirty gods were extremely distressed.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! दुनिया विनाश के करीब पहुंच गई और सभी बलिदान और अनुष्ठान नष्ट हो गए। तीसों देवता अत्यंत दुःखी हुए।

समेत्य समहेन्द्राश्च भयान्मन्त्रं प्रचक्रिरे नारायणं पुरस्कृत्य वैकुण्ठमपराजितम्

With the great Indra, they assembled and consulted each other out of fear. They worshipped the unvanquished Vaikuṇṭha Nārāyaṇa and sought refuge with him.

महान इंद्र के साथ, वे इकट्ठे हुए और डर के मारे एक-दूसरे से सलाह ली। उन्होंने अजेय वैकुंठ नारायण की पूजा की और उनकी शरण मांगी।

ततो देवाः समेतास्ते तदोचुर्मधुसूदनम् त्वं नः स्रष्टा च पाता च भर्ता च जगतः प्रभो त्वया सृष्टमिदं सर्वं यच्चेङ्गं यच्च नेङ्गति

Then the assembled gods spoke to Madhusūdana, "O lord! You are the creator, the sustainer and the protector. You are the world. You are the creator of everything, with limbs and without limbs.

तब इकट्ठे हुए देवताओं ने मधुसूदन से कहा, "हे भगवान! आप निर्माता, पालनकर्ता और संरक्षक हैं। आप दुनिया हैं। आप अंगों के साथ और बिना अंगों के हर चीज के निर्माता हैं।

त्वया भूमिः पुरा नष्टा समुद्रात्पुष्करेक्षण वाराहं रूपमास्थाय जगदर्थे समुद्धृता

O lotus-eyed one! In earlier times, when the earth was destroyed, for the welfare of the world, you raised it up, in the form of a boar.

हे कमलनयन! पूर्वकाल में जब पृथ्वी नष्ट हो गई थी तब जगत् के कल्याण के लिए आपने सूअर के रूप में उसे खड़ा किया था।

आदिदैत्यो महावीर्यो हिरण्यकशिपुस्त्वया नारसिंहं वपुः कृत्वा सूदितः पुरुषोत्तम

O supreme among beings! In ancient times, you destroyed the extremely valorous and ancient daitya Hiraṇyakaśipu in the form of nārasiṃha.

हे प्राणियों में श्रेष्ठ! प्राचीन काल में आपने नृसिंह के रूप में अत्यंत पराक्रमी एवं प्राचीन दैत्य हिरण्यकश्यप को नष्ट कर दिया था।

अवध्यः सर्वभूतानां बलिश्चापि महासुरः वामनं वपुराश्रित्य त्रैलोक्याद्भ्रंशितस्त्वया

The great āsura Bali was incapable of being killed by all beings. In the form of a dwarf, you expelled him from the three worlds.

महान असुर बाली सभी प्राणियों द्वारा मारे जाने में असमर्थ था। बौने के रूप में आपने उसे तीनों लोकों से निष्कासित कर दिया।

असुरश्च महेष्वासो जम्भ इत्यभिविश्रुतः यज्ञक्षोभकरः क्रूरस्त्वयैव विनिपातितः

The āsura who was a great archer was famous by the name of Jambha. He was cruel and the obstructor of sacrifices and you ensured his destruction.

वह असुर महान धनुर्धर था और जम्भ नाम से प्रसिद्ध था। वह क्रूर और यज्ञों में बाधा डालने वाला था और आपने उसका विनाश सुनिश्चित कर दिया।

एवमादीनि कर्माणि येषां संख्या न विद्यते अस्माकं भयभीतानां त्वं गतिर्मधुसूदन

Such are your deeds and they are too many to count. O Madhusūdana! We are scared and frightened and you are our refuge.

तुम्हारे कर्म ऐसे हैं और उनकी गणना करना बहुत कठिन है। हे मधुसूदन! हम डरे और सहमे हुए हैं और आप ही हमारा आश्रय हैं।

तस्मात्त्वां देव देवेश लोकार्थं ज्ञापयामहे रक्ष लोकांश्च देवांश्च शक्रं च महतो भयात्

O god! O lord of the gods! It is for this reason and for the welfare of the world that we are bringing this to your notice. Protect the worlds, the gods and Śākra from this great fear.""

रब्बा बे! हे देवताओं के स्वामी! इसी कारण से और विश्व कल्याण के लिए हम इसे आपके ध्यान में ला रहे हैं। इस महान भय से लोकों, देवताओं और शक्र की रक्षा करें।"
