कश्चिद्द्विजातिप्रवरो वेदाध्यायी तपोधनः
तपस्वी धर्मशीलश्च कौशिको नाम भारत
Mārkaṇḍeya said: "O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There was a foremost among brāhmana-s by the name of Kauṣika. He studied the Veda-s and was rich in austerities. He was an ascetic and followed dharma in his conduct.
मार्कंडेय ने कहा: "हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कौशिक नाम के ब्राह्मणों में एक अग्रणी थे। उन्होंने वेदों का अध्ययन किया और तपस्या में समृद्ध थे। वह एक तपस्वी थे और अपने आचरण में धर्म का पालन करते थे।

स वृक्षमूले कस्मिंश्चिद्वेदानुच्चारयन्स्थितः
That supreme among brāhmana-s studied the Veda-s, together with the Aṅgas and the Upaniṣad-s. One day, he was under a tree and was reciting the Veda-s.
ब्राह्मणों में सर्वोच्च ने वेदों के साथ-साथ अंग और उपनिषदों का भी अध्ययन किया। एक दिन, वह एक पेड़ के नीचे था और वेद-पाठ कर रहा था।

उपरिष्टाच्च वृक्षस्य बलाका संन्यलीयत
तया पुरीषमुत्सृष्टं ब्राह्मणस्य तदोपरि
A female crane was perched on the tree. At that time, it dropped some excrement on the brāhmaṇa.
पेड़ पर एक मादा सारस बैठी थी। उस समय, इसने ब्राह्मण पर कुछ मल गिरा दिया।
and injured by the brāhmaṇa, it fell down on the ground. On seeing that the crane had fallen down, bereft of its senses, the brāhmaṇa was overcome by compassion and regret.
और ब्राह्मण से घायल होकर वह भूमि पर गिर पड़ा। यह देखकर कि सारस बेहोश होकर गिर पड़ा है, ब्राह्मण दया और खेद से अभिभूत हो गया।
"Overcome by the force of passion and hatred, I have done that which I should not have." Having uttered these words several times, the learned one went to a village to beg for alms.
"जुनून और नफरत के बल पर काबू पाकर मैंने वह किया है जो मुझे नहीं करना चाहिए था।" इन शब्दों को कई बार कहकर वह विद्वान व्यक्ति भिक्षा माँगने के लिए एक गाँव में गया।
O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! On seeing her husband, the devoted lady neglected the brāhmaṇa. She gave her husband water for washing the feet and the mouth and a seat.
हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! अपने पति को देखकर, समर्पित महिला ने ब्राह्मण की उपेक्षा की। उसने अपने पति को पैर-मुँह धोने के लिये जल और आसन दिया।
O Yudhiṣṭhira! She always ate the food that had been left over by her husband. Always following her husband's thoughts, she thought her husband to be a god.
हे युधिष्ठिर! वह हमेशा अपने पति का बचा हुआ खाना ही खाती थी। सदैव अपने पति के विचारों पर चलने वाली वह अपने पति को परमेश्वर समझती थी।

न कर्मणा न मनसा नात्यश्नान्नापि चापिबत्
तं सर्वभावोपगता पतिशुश्रूषणे रता
In deeds, thoughts or any other way, she did not act in contrary fashion. Her sentiments were always devoted towards serving her husband.
कर्मों, विचारों या किसी भी अन्य तरीके से, उन्होंने इसके विपरीत कार्य नहीं किया। उनकी भावना सदैव अपने पति की सेवा के प्रति समर्पित रहती थी।
She attended to gods, guests, servants, the father-in-law and the mother-in-law. She was always devoted to serving and was always in control of her senses.
वह देवताओं, अतिथियों, नौकरों, ससुर और सास की सेवा करती थी। वह हमेशा सेवा में समर्पित रहती थी और हमेशा अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखती थी।
O supreme among the Bhārata lineage! The faithful one was ashamed. The famous one emerged to give alms to the brāhmaṇa.
हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! वफ़ादार लज्जित हुआ। प्रसिद्ध व्यक्ति ब्राह्मण को भिक्षा देने के लिए उभरा।

ब्राह्मण उवाच
किमिदं भवति त्वं मां तिष्ठेत्युक्त्वा वराङ्गने
उपरोधं कृतवती न विसर्जितवत्यसि
The brāhmaṇa said: "O one with the beautiful limbs! What is the meaning of this? You asked me to wait. You requested me to wait and did not dispose of me first."
ब्राह्मण ने कहा: "हे सुंदर अंगों वाले! इसका क्या अर्थ है? आपने मुझसे प्रतीक्षा करने के लिए कहा। आपने मुझसे प्रतीक्षा करने का अनुरोध किया और पहले मुझे नहीं छोड़ा।"
Mārkaṇḍeya said: O Indra among men! On seeing that the brāhmaṇa was burning in anger and flaming in his energy, the faithful one pacified him and spoke these words.
मार्कण्डेय ने कहा: हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! यह देखकर कि ब्राह्मण क्रोध में जल रहा था और उसकी ऊर्जा जल रही थी, वफादार व्यक्ति ने उसे शांत किया और ये शब्द कहे।

क्षन्तुमर्हसि मे विप्र भर्ता मे दैवतं महत्
स चापि क्षुधितः श्रान्तः प्राप्तः शुश्रूषितो मया
"O brāhmaṇa! Please pardon me. My husband is my greatest god. He had returned hungry and exhausted and I had served him first."
"हे ब्राह्मण! कृपया मुझे क्षमा करें। मेरे पति मेरे सबसे बड़े देवता हैं। वह भूखे और थके हुए लौटे थे और मैंने सबसे पहले उनकी सेवा की थी।"

ब्राह्मण उवाच
ब्राह्मणा न गरीयांसो गरीयांस्ते पतिः कृतः
गृहस्थधर्मे वर्तन्ती ब्राह्मणानवमन्यसे
The brāhmaṇa said: "Brāhmana-s are not superior and you make your husband to be superior. Though following the dharma of householders, you are insulting a brāhmaṇa.
ब्राह्मण ने कहा: "ब्राह्मण श्रेष्ठ नहीं हैं और तुम अपने पति को श्रेष्ठ बनाती हो। गृहस्थ धर्म का पालन करते हुए, तुम एक ब्राह्मण का अपमान कर रही हो।"

इन्द्रोऽप्येषां प्रणमते किं पुनर्मानुषा भुवि
अवलिप्ते न जानीषे वृद्धानां न श्रुतं त्वया
ब्राह्मणा ह्यग्निसदृशा दहेयुः पृथिवीमपि
Even Indra bows down to such a one, not to speak of men on earth. O impudent one! Do you not know and have you not heard from the elders? Like a fire, a brāhmaṇa can burn down the entire earth."
ऐसे व्यक्ति के सामने इंद्र भी झुकते हैं, पृथ्वी पर मनुष्यों की तो बात ही क्या है। हे निर्लज्ज! क्या तू नहीं जानता और क्या तू ने पुरनियों से नहीं सुना? आग की तरह, एक ब्राह्मण पूरी पृथ्वी को जला सकता है।"
The lady replied: "I am not insulting brāhmana-s. They are powerful and are the equals of the gods. O brāhmaṇa! O unblemished one! Please pardon my transgression.
महिला ने उत्तर दिया: "मैं ब्राह्मणों का अपमान नहीं कर रही हूं। वे शक्तिशाली हैं और देवताओं के बराबर हैं। हे ब्राह्मण! हे निष्कलंक! कृपया मेरे अपराध को क्षमा करें।

जानामि तेजो विप्राणां महाभाग्यं च धीमताम्
अपेयः सागरः क्रोधात्कृतो हि लवणोदकः
I know the energy of immensely fortunate and wise brāhmana-s. Through their anger, they made the waters of the ocean salty and undrinkable.
मैं अत्यंत भाग्यशाली और बुद्धिमान ब्राह्मणों की ऊर्जा को जानता हूं। उन्होंने अपने क्रोध से समुद्र के पानी को खारा और पीने योग्य नहीं बना दिया।
I have heard a lot about the influence of those who know the brāhman. O brāhmana! Their anger is extremely great. But so are the favours of those great-souled ones.
मैंने ब्रह्म को जानने वालों के प्रभाव के बारे में बहुत कुछ सुना है। हे ब्राह्मण! इनका गुस्सा बहुत ज्यादा होता है. लेकिन उन महानुभावों के उपकार भी ऐसे ही होते हैं।

अस्मिंस्त्वतिक्रमे ब्रह्मन्क्षन्तुमर्हसि मेऽनघ
पतिशुश्रूषया धर्मो यः स मे रोचते द्विज
O brāhmaṇa! O unblemished one! You should pardon this transgression of mine. O brāhmaṇa! The dharma that I must serve my husband is a pleasant one for me.
हे ब्राह्मण! हे निष्कलंक! आपको मेरा यह अपराध क्षमा कर देना चाहिए। हे ब्राह्मण! मुझे अपने पति की सेवा करनी चाहिए यह धर्म मेरे लिए सुखदायक है।
O supreme among brāhmana-s! But anger is the enemy that resides in the bodies of men. The gods know him to be a brāhmaṇa who has discarded the delusion of anger,
हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! लेकिन क्रोध वह शत्रु है जो मनुष्यों के शरीर में रहता है। देवता उसे एक ब्राह्मण जानते हैं जिसने क्रोध के भ्रम को त्याग दिया है,

यो वदेदिह सत्यानि गुरुं संतोषयेत च
हिंसितश्च न हिंसेत तं देवा ब्राह्मणं विदुः
and he who speaks the truth and satisfies his preceptor. The gods know him to be a brāhmaṇa, who does not harm even when he has been harmed.
और जो सत्य बोलता और अपने गुरू को संतुष्ट करता है। देवता उसे ब्राह्मण जानते हैं, जो हानि होने पर भी हानि नहीं पहुँचाता।
The gods know him to be a brāhmaṇa, who is in control of his senses, is devoted to dharma, is always engaged in studying, is pure and is in control of desire and anger.
देवता उसे ब्राह्मण जानते हैं, जो अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखता है, धर्म के प्रति समर्पित है, हमेशा अध्ययन में लगा रहता है, पवित्र है और इच्छा और क्रोध पर नियंत्रण रखता है।
He who looks upon the world as his own self is intelligent and is learned in dharma. The gods know him to be a brāhmaṇa, who is devoted to all forms of dharma,

योऽध्यापयेदधीयीत यजेद्वा याजयीत वा
दद्याद्वापि यथाशक्ति तं देवा ब्राह्मणं विदुः
who studies and teaches, who sacrifices and is a priest at the sacrifices of others. The gods know him to be a brāhmaṇa, who donates according to his capacity.
जो पढ़ता और पढ़ाता है, जो बलिदान देता है और दूसरों के बलिदान का पुजारी है। देवता उसे ब्राह्मण जानते हैं, जो अपनी क्षमता के अनुसार दान देता है।
The supreme among brāhmana-s who studies the Veda-s is known as a brahmachari. He who studies without being distracted is known by the gods to be a brāhmaṇa.
वेदों का अध्ययन करने वाले ब्राह्मणों में सर्वोच्च को ब्रह्मचारी के रूप में जाना जाता है। जो बिना विचलित हुए अध्ययन करता है, देवता उसे ब्राह्मण कहते हैं।

यद्ब्राह्मणानां कुशलं तदेषां परिकीर्तयेत्
सत्यं तथा व्याहरतां नानृते रमते मनः
What ensures the welfare of brāhmana-s has been recounted—always speaking the truth and mentally not rejoicing in falsehood.
ब्राह्मणों के कल्याण को सुनिश्चित करने वाली बात का वर्णन किया गया है - हमेशा सच बोलना और मानसिक रूप से झूठ पर खुशी न मनाना।
O supreme among brāhmana-s! The eternal wealth of brāhmana-s is in studying, control of passions and restraint of the senses. Those who know dharma say that truth and uprightness are the supreme dharma.
हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! ब्राह्मणों का शाश्वत धन अध्ययन, वासनाओं पर नियंत्रण और इंद्रियों का संयम है। जो लोग धर्म को जानते हैं वे कहते हैं कि सत्य और ईमानदारी ही सर्वोच्च धर्म है।
While eternal dharma is difficult to fathom, it is based on truth. The injunctions of the elders are that the proof of dharma is in the śruti-s.
जबकि शाश्वत धर्म की थाह पाना कठिन है, यह सत्य पर आधारित है। बुजुर्गों का आदेश है कि धर्म का प्रमाण श्रुतियों में है।
Aranyakaparvan · v40
बहुधा दृश्यते धर्मः सूक्ष्म एव द्विजोत्तम
भवानपि च धर्मज्ञः स्वाध्यायनिरतः शुचिः
न तु तत्त्वेन भगवन्धर्मान्वेत्सीति मे मतिः
O supreme among brāhmana-s! It is evident that dharma can be seen in many ways and that it is subtle. You are learned in dharma. You are devoted to studying and are pure. O illustrious one! In my view you do not know the true meaning of dharma.
हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! यह स्पष्ट है कि धर्म को कई तरीकों से देखा जा सकता है और यह सूक्ष्म है। आप धर्म में विद्वान हैं. आप अध्ययन के प्रति समर्पित हैं और पवित्र हैं। हे महामहिम! मेरे विचार से आप धर्म का सही अर्थ नहीं जानते।

मातापितृभ्यां शुश्रूषुः सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः
मिथिलायां वसन्व्याधः स ते धर्मान्प्रवक्ष्यति
तत्र गच्छस्व भद्रं ते यथाकामं द्विजोत्तम
There is a hunter who lives in Mithila. He serves his father and his mother, he is truthful and is in control of his senses. He will tell you about dharma. O fortunate one! O supreme among brāhmana-s! If you desire, go there.
मिथिला में एक शिकारी रहता है। वह अपने पिता और अपनी माँ की सेवा करता है, वह सच्चा है और अपनी इंद्रियों पर नियंत्रण रखता है। वह तुम्हें धर्म के बारे में बताएगा. हे भाग्यवान! हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! अगर तुम्हारी इच्छा हो तो वहां जाओ.

अत्युक्तमपि मे सर्वं क्षन्तुमर्हस्यनिन्दित
स्त्रियो ह्यवध्याः सर्वेषां ये धर्मविदुषो जनाः
O unblemished one! Please pardon everything that I may have spoken in excess. All the ones who are learned in dharma say that women must not be injured."
हे निष्कलंक! जो कुछ मैंने अधिक बोल दिया हो, कृपया उसे क्षमा करें। धर्म के सभी विद्वान कहते हैं कि महिलाओं को चोट नहीं पहुंचानी चाहिए।"

ब्राह्मण उवाच
प्रीतोऽस्मि तव भद्रं ते गतः क्रोधश्च शोभने
उपालम्भस्त्वया ह्युक्तो मम निःश्रेयसं परम्
स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु गमिष्यामि साधयिष्यामि शोभने
The brāhmaṇa replied: "O fortunate one! O beautiful one! I am pleased with you and my anger has gone. The reprimands uttered by you have been extremely beneficial for me. O beautiful one! May you live in peace. I am leaving to improve myself."
ब्राह्मण ने उत्तर दिया: "हे भाग्यशाली! हे सुंदरी! मैं तुमसे प्रसन्न हूं और मेरा क्रोध दूर हो गया है। तुम्हारे द्वारा दी गई फटकार मेरे लिए अत्यंत लाभकारी रही है। हे सुंदरी! तुम शांति से रहो। मैं खुद को सुधारने के लिए जा रहा हूं।"
