जनमेजय उवाच कथं नागायुतप्राणो भीमसेनो महाबलः भयमाहारयत्तीव्रं तस्मादजगरान्मुने

Janemejaya asked: O sage! How can Bhīmā, whose prowess is terrible and who has the strength of ten thousand elephants, have been overcome by dreadful fear on account of an ājagara?

जनमेजय ने पूछा: हे ऋषि! भीम, जिसका पराक्रम भयानक है और जिसके पास दस हजार हाथियों का बल है, अजगर के कारण भयानक भय से कैसे उबर सकता है?

पौलस्त्यं योऽऽह्वयद्युद्धे धनदं बलदर्पितः नलिन्यां कदनं कृत्वा वराणां यक्षरक्षसाम्

The insolent one challenged the lord of riches, of the Pulastya lineage, in battle. He encountered and killed the foremost among yakṣa-s and rākṣasa-s at the lotus pond.

उस ढीठ व्यक्ति ने युद्ध में पुलस्त्य वंश के धन के स्वामी को चुनौती दी। उन्होंने कमल तालाब पर यक्षों और राक्षसों में सबसे प्रमुख राक्षसों का सामना किया और उन्हें मार डाला।

तं शंससि भयाविष्टमापन्नमरिकर्षणम् एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं परं कौतूहलं हि मे

You said that the destroyer of enemies was overcome by distress and fear. I am curious and wish to hear this in detail.

आपने कहा कि शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाला संकट और भय से व्याकुल हो गया। मैं उत्सुक हूं और इसे विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूं.

वैशंपायन उवाच बह्वाश्चर्ये वने तेषां वसतामुग्रधन्विनाम् प्राप्तानामाश्रमाद्राजन्राजर्षेर्वृषपर्वणः

Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Having left the hermitage of King Vrishaparva, those foremost among archers lived in the forest that possessed many wonders.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! धनुर्धरों में श्रेष्ठ वे राजा वृषपर्वा का आश्रम छोड़कर अनेक आश्चर्यों से युक्त वन में रहते थे।

यदृच्छया धनुष्पाणिर्बद्धखड्गो वृकोदरः ददर्श तद्वनं रम्यं देवगन्धर्वसेवितम्

On seeing that beautiful forest, frequented by gods and gāndharva-s, Vṛkodara began to roam around as he wished, bow and sword in his hands.

देवताओं और गंधर्वों से भरे उस सुंदर वन को देखकर वृकोदर हाथों में धनुष और तलवार लेकर अपनी इच्छानुसार घूमने लगा।

स ददर्श शुभान्देशान्गिरेर्हिमवतस्तदा देवर्षिसिद्धचरितानप्सरोगणसेवितान्

He saw the pure regions on the Himālaya mountains, visited by masses of āpsara-s and frequented by gods, riṣi-s and siddha-s.

उन्होंने हिमालय पर्वत पर पवित्र क्षेत्रों को देखा, जहां अप्सराएं बड़ी संख्या में आती थीं और देवता, ऋषि और सिद्ध लोग अक्सर आते थे।

चकोरैश्चक्रवाकैश्च पक्षिभिर्जीवजीवकैः कोकिलैर्भृङ्गराजैश्च तत्र तत्र विनादितान्

It resounded everywhere with the sounds of cakora-s, cakravāka birds, jīva-s, jīvaka-s, cuckoos and bhṛṅgarāja-s.

चकोरा-स, चक्रवाक पक्षी, जीव-स, जीवक-स, कोयल और भृंगराज-स की ध्वनि से सर्वत्र गूँज उठा।

नित्यपुष्पफलैर्वृक्षैर्हिमसंस्पर्शकोमलैः उपेतान्बहुलच्छायैर्मनोनयननन्दनैः

It was covered with trees that were always full of flowers and fruit, tender because of the touch of snow. There was plenty of shade and it was pleasant to the mind and the eye.

वह वृक्षों से आच्छादित था जो सदैव फूलों और फलों से भरे रहते थे, बर्फ के स्पर्श के कारण कोमल रहते थे। वहां भरपूर छाया थी और वह मन और आंखों को सुखद लग रही थी।

स संपश्यन्गिरिनदीर्वैडूर्यमणिसंनिभैः सलिलैर्हिमसंस्पर्शैर्हंसकारण्डवायुतैः

He saw mountainous streams tinged with the colour of lapis lazuli. The water was touched by snow and there were tens of thousands of geese and kāraṇḍava-s.

उन्होंने पहाड़ी जलधाराओं को लापीस लाजुली के रंग से रंगा हुआ देखा। पानी बर्फ से छू गया था और वहां हजारों की संख्या में हंस और करंडव थे।

वनानि देवदारूणां मेघानामिव वागुराः हरिचन्दनमिश्राणि तुङ्गकालीयकान्यपि

There were forests of devadāru trees that seemed to act like a net for the clouds. These were mixed with yellow sandalwood and tall kālīyaka-s.

वहाँ देवदारु वृक्षों के जंगल थे जो बादलों के लिए जाल की तरह काम करते प्रतीत होते थे। इन्हें पीले चंदन और लम्बे कालियाक-एस के साथ मिश्रित किया गया था।

मृगयां परिधावन्स समेषु मरुधन्वसु विध्यन्मृगाञ्शरैः शुद्धैश्चचार सुमहाबलः

He went hunting on the flat terrain of the desert. The immensely strong one shot the deer with arrows that were pure.

वह रेगिस्तान के समतल भूभाग पर शिकार करने गया। उस परम बलशाली ने निर्मल बाणों से मृग को मारा।

स ददर्श महाकायं भुजङ्गं लोमहर्षणम् गिरिदुर्गे समापन्नं कायेनावृत्य कन्दरम्

Then he saw a gigantic serpent that makes one's body hair stand up. It had entered a mountainous cavern and had covered the entire cave with its body.

तभी उसने एक विशालकाय सर्प देखा जो शरीर के रोंगटे खड़े कर देता है। वह एक पहाड़ी गुफा में घुस गया था और पूरी गुफा को अपने शरीर से ढक लिया था।

पर्वताभोगवर्ष्माणं भोगैश्चन्द्रार्कमण्डलैः चित्राङ्गमजिनैश्चित्रैर्हरिद्रासदृशच्छविम्

Its coils were piled as high as a mountain. Its colour was yellow like turmeric and its colourful skin was speckled with circular marks like the sun and the moon.

उसके कुंडल पर्वत के समान ऊँचे ढेर थे। उसका रंग हल्दी के समान पीला था और उसकी रंगीन त्वचा सूर्य और चंद्रमा के समान गोलाकार चिन्हों से युक्त थी।

गुहाकारेण वक्त्रेण चतुर्दंष्ट्रेण राजता दीप्ताक्षेणातिताम्रेण लिहन्तं सृक्किणी मुहुः

Its mouth was as wide as a cave and was adorned with four teeth. It constantly licked the corners of its mouth. Its eyes blazed and were copper-red in hue.

इसका मुँह गुफा के समान चौड़ा और चार दाँतों से सुशोभित था। वह लगातार अपने मुँह के कोनों को चाटता रहा। उसकी आँखें चमक उठीं और तांबे-लाल रंग की थीं।

त्रासनं सर्वभूतानां कालान्तकयमोपमम् निःश्वासक्ष्वेडनादेन भर्त्सयन्तमिव स्थितम्

Like destiny and like Yāma, it struck terror in all beings. Through the moist hissing of its breath, it seemed to be reprimanding.

नियति की तरह और यम की तरह, इसने सभी प्राणियों में आतंक फैला दिया। उसकी सांसों की भीनी-भीनी सिसकारी से ऐसा लग रहा था जैसे वह डांट रहा हो।

स भीमं सहसाभ्येत्य पृदाकुः क्षुधितो भृशम् जग्राहाजगरो ग्राहो भुजयोरुभयोर्बलात्

The hungry boa suddenly grasped Bhīmasena and forcefully seized him with both his arms.

भूखे सूअर ने अचानक भीमसेन को पकड़ लिया और उसे अपनी दोनों भुजाओं से जबरदस्ती पकड़ लिया।

तेन संस्पृष्टमात्रस्य भीमसेनस्य वै तदा संज्ञा मुमोह सहसा वरदानेन तस्य ह

Because of the boon it had received, Bhīmasena instantly lost his senses as soon as it touched him.

इसे प्राप्त वरदान के कारण, जैसे ही भीमसेन ने उसे छुआ, वह तुरंत अपनी इंद्रियाँ खो बैठा।

दश नागसहस्राणि धारयन्ति हि यद्बलम् तद्बलं भीमसेनस्य भुजयोरसमं परैः

The strength of Bhīmasena's arms might have been more than that of others and his strength might have been able to withstand ten thousand elephants.

भीमसेन की भुजाओं की ताकत दूसरों की तुलना में अधिक रही होगी और उनकी ताकत दस हजार हाथियों का सामना करने में सक्षम रही होगी।

स तेजस्वी तथा तेन भुजगेन वशीकृतः विस्फुरञ्शनकैर्भीमो न शशाक विचेष्टितुम्

But the energetic one was completely overcome by the serpent. Bhīmā trembled slowly, but he was completely unable to move.

लेकिन ऊर्जावान व्यक्ति पूरी तरह से नागिन पर हावी हो गया। भीम धीरे-धीरे कांपने लगा, लेकिन वह हिलने-डुलने में पूरी तरह असमर्थ था।

नागायुतसमप्राणः सिंहस्कन्धो महाभुजः गृहीतो व्यजहात्सत्त्वं वरदानेन मोहितः

He was equal to ten thousand elephants. He had the shoulders of a lion. His arms were strong. But grasped, he lost his mettle. He was deluded because of the grant of the boon.

वह दस हजार हाथियों के बराबर था। उसके कंधे सिंह के समान थे। उसकी भुजाएं मजबूत थीं. लेकिन समझ गया, उसने अपनी ताकत खो दी। वरदान मिलने के कारण वह भ्रमित हो गया।

स हि प्रयत्नमकरोत्तीव्रमात्मविमोक्षणे न चैनमशकद्वीरः कथंचित्प्रतिबाधितुम्

For some time, the brave one tried terribly hard to extricate himself. But he did not succeed at all.

कुछ देर तक उस बहादुर ने खुद को छुड़ाने की बहुत कोशिश की। लेकिन उन्हें बिल्कुल भी सफलता नहीं मिली.
