जनमेजय उवाच भगवञ्श्रोतुमिच्छामि पार्थस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः विस्तरेण कथामेतां यथास्त्राण्युपलब्धवान्

Janamejaya said: O illustrious one! I wish to hear in detail how Pārtha, the one whose deeds are unsullied, obtained the weapons.

जनमेजय ने कहा: हे महामहिम! मैं विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूं कि पार्थ ने, जिसके कर्म निष्कलंक हैं, हथियार कैसे प्राप्त किये।

कथं स पुरुषव्याघ्रो दीर्घबाहुर्धनंजयः वनं प्रविष्टस्तेजस्वी निर्मनुष्यमभीतवत्

How did that tiger of a man, long-armed Dhanañjayā, enter the forest, that man of great energy, that fearless man, that forest without men?

वह मनुष्य जैसा बाघ, लंबे भुजाओं वाला धनंजय, वह महान ऊर्जावान व्यक्ति, वह निडर व्यक्ति, वह मनुष्य रहित जंगल में कैसे प्रवेश कर गया?

किं च तेन कृतं तत्र वसता ब्रह्मवित्तम कथं च भगवान्स्थाणुर्देवराजश्च तोषितः

O one who knows about the brāhman! What did he do while he lived there? How did he satisfy the illustrious Sthāṇu, lord of the gods?

हे ब्रह्म को जानने वाले! वहाँ रहते हुए उसने क्या किया? उन्होंने देवताओं के स्वामी, प्रतिष्ठित स्थाणु को कैसे संतुष्ट किया?

एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं त्वत्प्रसादाद्द्विजोत्तम त्वं हि सर्वज्ञ दिव्यं च मानुषं चैव वेत्थ ह

O supreme among brāhmana-s! Through your grace, I wish to hear all this. You are omniscient. You know everything, divine and human.

हे ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ! आपकी कृपा से मैं यह सब सुनना चाहता हूँ। आप सर्वज्ञ हैं. आप दिव्य और मानवीय सब कुछ जानते हैं।

अत्यद्भुतं महाप्राज्ञ रोमहर्षणमर्जुनः भवेन सह संग्रामं चकाराप्रतिमं किल पुरा प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः संग्रामेष्वपराजितः

O immensely wise one! The ancient battle between Arjuna, supreme among warriors and unvanquished in battle, and Bhāva was unparalleled and extraordinary and made one's hair stand up.

हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! योद्धाओं में सर्वोच्च और युद्ध में अजेय अर्जुन और भाव के बीच प्राचीन युद्ध अद्वितीय और असाधारण था और इसने रोंगटे खड़े कर दिए।

यच्छ्रुत्वा नरसिंहानां दैन्यहर्षातिविस्मयात् शूराणामपि पार्थानां हृदयानि चकम्पिरे

On hearing about it, the hearts of the brave Pārtha-s, lions among men, also trembled in despondency, delight and great surprise.

इसके बारे में सुनकर, बहादुर पार्थों के दिल, पुरुषों के बीच भी, निराशा, खुशी और महान आश्चर्य से कांप उठे।

यद्यच्च कृतवानन्यत्पार्थस्तदखिलं वद न ह्यस्य निन्दितं जिष्णोः सुसूक्ष्ममपि लक्षये चरितं तस्य शूरस्य तन्मे सर्वं प्रकीर्तय

Tell me everything about Pārtha's deeds. I do not see the slightest thing to censure in Jiṣṇu. Recount to me everything about the character of that brave one.

मुझे पार्थ के कर्मों के विषय में सब कुछ बताओ। मुझे जिष्णु में निंदा करने लायक थोड़ी सी भी बात नजर नहीं आती। उस वीर के चरित्र के विषय में मुझे सब कुछ सुनाओ।

वैशंपायन उवाच कथयिष्यामि ते तात कथामेतां महात्मनः दिव्यां कौरवशार्दूल महतीमद्भुतोपमाम्

Vaiśampāyana said: O son! O tiger among the Kaurava-s! I will recount for you the divine, great and extraordinary story of that great-souled one.

वैशम्पायन ने कहाः हे पुत्र! हे कौरवों में से व्याघ्र! मैं तुम्हें उस महान आत्मा की दिव्य, महान और असाधारण कहानी सुनाऊंगा।

गात्रसंस्पर्शसंबन्धं त्र्यम्बकेण सहानघ पार्थस्य देवदेवेन शृणु सम्यक्समागमम्

O unblemished one! Hear in detail the account of Pārtha's meeting with Tryambaka, god of the gods, where there was physical contact.

हे निष्कलंक! पार्थ की देवताओं के देव त्र्यंबक से मुलाकात, जहाँ शारीरिक संपर्क हुआ था, का वर्णन विस्तार से सुनें।

युधिष्ठिरनियोगात्स जगामामितविक्रमः शक्रं सुरेश्वरं द्रष्टुं देवदेवं च शंकरम्

On Yudhiṣṭhira's instructions, the infinitely valorous one set out to see Śākra, lord of the gods, and Śaṅkara, god of the gods.

युधिष्ठिर के निर्देश पर, असीम वीर भगवान शंकर, देवताओं के भगवान शंकर और देवताओं के भगवान शंकर को देखने के लिए निकल पड़े।

दिव्यं तद्धनुरादाय खड्गं च पुरुषर्षभः महाबलो महाबाहुरर्जुनः कार्यसिद्धये दिशं ह्युदीचीं कौरव्यो हिमवच्छिखरं प्रति

To ensure that his task met with success, the immensely strong and mighty-armed Arjuna, bull among men, took his divine bow and sword. He set out in a northward direction for the peak of the Himālaya-s.

यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कि उसका कार्य सफल हो, अत्यंत बलवान और शक्तिशाली भुजाओं वाले अर्जुन ने, जो पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ था, अपना दिव्य धनुष और तलवार ले ली। वह हिमालय की चोटी के लिए उत्तर दिशा की ओर निकल पड़ा।

ऐन्द्रिः स्थिरमना राजन्सर्वलोकमहारथः त्वरया परया युक्तस्तपसे धृतनिश्चयः वनं कण्टकितं घोरमेक एवान्वपद्यत

His mind was fixed on austerities. O king! With a steadfast mind, Kauravya, Indra's son, mahāratha in all the worlds, he swiftly entered a terrible forest that was full of thorns.

उनका मन तपस्या में लगा हुआ था। हे राजा! इन्द्र के पुत्र कौरव्य, समस्त लोकों में महारथी, दृढ़ मन से तेजी से काँटों से भरे एक भयानक वन में प्रवेश कर गये।

नानापुष्पफलोपेतं नानापक्षिनिषेवितम् नानामृगगणाकीर्णं सिद्धचारणसेवितम्

It was full of many flowers and fruit and was populated by many birds. It was full of many types of animals and was frequented by siddha-s and cāraṇa-s.

वह अनेक फूलों और फलों से भरा हुआ था और अनेक पक्षियों से आबाद था। यह कई प्रकार के जानवरों से भरा हुआ था और सिद्धों और चारणों का आना-जाना लगा रहता था।

ततः प्रयाते कौन्तेये वनं मानुषवर्जितम् शङ्खानां पटहानां च शब्दः समभवद्दिवि

When Kaunteya entered the forest that was bereft of men, the sounds of conch shells and drums could be heard from heaven.

जब कौन्तेय ने मनुष्यों से रहित वन में प्रवेश किया, तो स्वर्ग से शंख और ढोल की आवाजें सुनाई दीं।

पुष्पवर्षं च सुमहन्निपपात महीतले मेघजालं च विततं छादयामास सर्वतः

A great shower of flowers fell down on the ground. A net of clouds covered everything with shade.

धरती पर फूलों की भारी वर्षा हुई। बादलों के जाल ने सब कुछ छाया से ढक दिया।

अतीत्य वनदुर्गाणि संनिकर्षे महागिरेः शुशुभे हिमवत्पृष्ठे वसमानोऽर्जुनस्तदा

Passing through the forest that was difficult of access, he approached the great mountain. In all his splendour, Arjuna then lived on the peak of the Himālaya-s.

उस जंगल से गुजरते हुए जहाँ पहुँचना कठिन था, वह महान पर्वत के पास पहुँचा। अपने समस्त वैभव के साथ अर्जुन तब हिमालय के शिखर पर रहते थे।

तत्रापश्यद्द्रुमान्फुल्लान्विहगैर्वल्गु नादितान् नदीश्च बहुलावर्ता नीलवैडूर्यसंनिभाः

He saw many flowering trees there, resounding with the sweet sounds of birds. There were rivers with many currents, tinged like blue lapis lazuli,

उसने वहां बहुत से फूलों वाले पेड़ देखे, जो पक्षियों की मधुर ध्वनि से गूंज रहे थे। वहाँ कई धाराओं वाली नदियाँ थीं, जिनका रंग नीला लापीस लाजुली जैसा था,

हंसकारण्डवोद्गीताः सारसाभिरुतास्तथा पुंस्कोकिलरुताश्चैव क्रौञ्चबर्हिणनादिताः

echoing with the sounds of swans and ducks, the cries of cranes and resounding with the notes of male cuckoos, herons and peacocks.

हंसों और बत्तखों की आवाज़ से गूँजती हुई, सारस की आवाज़ से और नर कोयल, बगुले और मोर की आवाज़ से गूँजती हुई।

मनोहरवनोपेतास्तस्मिन्नतिरथोऽर्जुनः पुण्यशीतामलजलाः पश्यन्प्रीतमनाभवत्

On seeing the beautiful woods and the pure, cool and clear water, the great warrior Arjuna was delighted.

सुन्दर वनों तथा शुद्ध, शीतल एवं स्वच्छ जल को देखकर महारथी अर्जुन प्रसन्न हो गये।

रमणीये वनोद्देशे रममाणोऽर्जुनस्तदा तपस्युग्रे वर्तमान उग्रतेजा महामनाः

The great-souled Arjuna then engaged in terrible austerities in a beautiful region of that beautiful forest.

तब महाबली अर्जुन उस सुंदर वन के एक सुंदर क्षेत्र में भयानक तपस्या में लग गये।

दर्भचीरं निवस्याथ दण्डाजिनविभूषितः पूर्णे पूर्णे त्रिरात्रे तु मासमेकं फलाशनः द्विगुणेनैव कालेन द्वितीयं मासमत्यगात्

He clad himself in dārbha gras-s, bark and deerskin and carried a staff. In the first month, he ate fruits once every period of three nights was over. In the second month, it was for double the period.

वह दर्भ ग्रास, छाल और मृगचर्म धारण करता था और एक लाठी रखता था। पहले महीने में वह तीन रातों की अवधि पूरी होने पर एक बार फल खाता था। दूसरे महीने में यह दोगुनी अवधि के लिए था।

तृतीयमपि मासं स पक्षेणाहारमाचरन् शीर्णं च पतितं भूमौ पर्णं समुपयुक्तवान्

In the third month, he ate once every fortnight, surviving on decayed leaves that fell down on the ground.

तीसरे महीने में, वह हर पखवाड़े में एक बार खाना खाता था और जमीन पर गिरे हुए सड़े हुए पत्तों पर जीवित रहता था।

चतुर्थे त्वथ संप्राप्ते मासि पूर्णे ततः परम् वायुभक्षो महाबाहुरभवत्पाण्डुनन्दनः ऊर्ध्वबाहुर्निरालम्बः पादाङ्गुष्ठाग्रविष्ठितः

When the fourth moon arrived and the moon was full, the mighty-armed son of Pāṇḍu survived only on air. He raised his arms up, and without anything for support, stood on the tips of his toes.

जब चौथा चंद्रमा आया और चंद्रमा पूर्ण हो गया, तो पांडु का शक्तिशाली पुत्र केवल हवा पर जीवित रहा। उसने अपनी भुजाएँ ऊपर उठाईं और बिना किसी सहारे के, अपने पैर की उंगलियों पर खड़ा हो गया।

सदोपस्पर्शनाच्चास्य बभूवुरमितौजसः विद्युदम्भोरुहनिभा जटास्तस्य महात्मनः

Because of the frequent baths he took, the matted hair of that great-souled one whose energy was infinite, became as lustrous as lightning and the lotus.

बार-बार स्नान करने के कारण, उस महान आत्मा के उलझे हुए बाल, जिनकी ऊर्जा अनंत थी, बिजली और कमल के समान चमकदार हो गए।

ततो महर्षयः सर्वे जग्मुर्देवं पिनाकिनम् शितिकण्ठं महाभागं प्रणिपत्य प्रसाद्य च सर्वे निवेदयामासुः कर्म तत्फल्गुनस्य ह

Then all the maharṣi-s went to Pināki. They prostrated themselves before the immensely illustrious one with the dark throat and sought his favours. They told him about Phālguna's deeds,

तब सभी महर्षि पिनाकी के पास गये। उन्होंने काले गले वाले अत्यंत वैभवशाली व्यक्ति के सामने साष्टांग प्रणाम किया और उनका आशीर्वाद मांगा। उन्होंने उसे फाल्गुन के कार्यों के बारे में बताया,

एष पार्थो महातेजा हिमवत्पृष्ठमाश्रितः उग्रे तपसि दुष्पारे स्थितो धूमाययन्दिशः

"This immensely energetic Pārtha has established himself on the peak of the Himālaya-s. He is engaged in difficult and terrible austerities and smoke is emerging in all the directions.

"इस अत्यंत ऊर्जावान पार्थ ने खुद को हिमालय के शिखर पर स्थापित कर लिया है। वह कठिन और भयानक तपस्या में लगे हुए हैं और सभी दिशाओं में धुआं निकल रहा है।

तस्य देवेश न वयं विद्मः सर्वे चिकीर्षितम् संतापयति नः सर्वानसौ साधु निवार्यताम्

O lord of the gods! None of us knows what he wishes for. He is tormenting us. It would be better if he were to be restrained."

हे देवताओं के स्वामी! हममें से कोई नहीं जानता कि वह क्या चाहता है। वह हमें सता रहा है. बेहतर होगा कि उस पर लगाम लगाई जाए।”

महेश्वर उवाच शीघ्रं गच्छत संहृष्टा यथागतमतन्द्रिताः अहमस्य विजानामि संकल्पं मनसि स्थितम्

Māheśvara replied: "In a happy frame of mind and without fatigue, swiftly return to wherever you have come from. I know the resolution that is fixed in his mind.

महेश्वर ने उत्तर दिया: "प्रसन्न मन से और बिना थकान के, जहां से भी आए हो, वहां शीघ्र लौट जाओ। मैं जानता हूं कि उसके मन में क्या संकल्प है।"

नास्य स्वर्गस्पृहा काचिन्नैश्वर्यस्य न चायुषः यत्त्वस्य काङ्क्षितं सर्वं तत्करिष्येऽहमद्य वै

He does not wish for heaven, or riches, or a long life.I will accomplish today everything that he wishes for."

वह न तो स्वर्ग, न धन-दौलत, न लंबी आयु की कामना करता है। मैं आज वह सब कुछ पूरा करूंगा जो वह चाहता है।"

वैशंपायन उवाच ते श्रुत्व शर्ववचनमृषयः सत्यवादिनः प्रहृष्टमनसो जग्मुर्यथास्वं पुनराश्रमान्

Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard Śarva's words, all the truthful riṣi-s returned to their hermitages in happy frames of mind.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: सर्व के वचन सुनकर सभी सत्यवादी ऋषि प्रसन्न मन से अपने आश्रमों को लौट आए।
