Vaiśampāyana said: Those sons of Indra-s among men were used to pleasures. But they had now attained misfortune and reached the forest. Like Indra-s, they began to sport themselves in that sacred place, along the banks of the Sarasvatī, with śala forests.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: मनुष्यों में इन्द्र के वे पुत्र भोग-विलास के आदी थे। लेकिन अब वे दुर्भाग्य को प्राप्त हो गये थे और जंगल में पहुँच गये। इंद्रों की तरह, वे उस पवित्र स्थान पर, सरस्वती के तट पर, शाला वनों के साथ, क्रीड़ा करने लगे।
In the forest, the king, who was a bull among Kuru-s, satisfied all the ascetics, sages and the best of brāhmana-s who were with him, by offering them the best of roots and fruit.
जंगल में कुरुवंश के बैल राजा ने अपने साथ रहने वाले सभी तपस्वियों, ऋषियों और श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मणों को सर्वोत्तम जड़ें और फल देकर संतुष्ट किया।
When the Pāṇḍava-s lived in that great forest, Dhaumya, their immensely energetic priest, who was like a father to the Kuru-s, performed sacrifices for the gods and the ancestors.
जब पांडव उस महान वन में रहते थे, तो उनके अत्यंत ऊर्जावान पुजारी धौम्य, जो कुरु-वंश के पिता के समान थे, देवताओं और पूर्वजों के लिए यज्ञ करते थे।
Having lost their kingdom, the illustrious Pāṇḍava-s lived there. While they lived there, the ancient riṣi Mārkaṇḍeya, terrible and resplendent in his energy, arrived in their hermitage as a guest.
अपना राज्य खोने के बाद, प्रसिद्ध पांडव वहां रहने लगे। जब वे वहां रहते थे, तो भयानक और तेजस्वी प्राचीन ऋषि मार्कंडेय अतिथि के रूप में उनके आश्रम में आये।

संस्मृत्य रामं मनसा महात्मा; तपस्विमध्येऽस्मयतामितौजाः
When he saw all of them, Yudhiṣṭhira, Kṛṣṇā Draupadī, Bhīmā and Arjuna in the middle of the ascetics, the great-souled one, infinite in his energy, remembered Rāma and seemed to smile.
जब उन्होंने तपस्वियों के बीच में युधिष्ठिर, कृष्ण द्रौपदी, भीम और अर्जुन, उन सभी को देखा, तो उनकी ऊर्जा में अनंत महान आत्मा ने राम को याद किया और मुस्कुराने लगे।
Dharmarāja was miserable and said, "All these ascetics are ashamed. While all these ascetics are looking on, why do you look at me and smile, as if you are amused?"
धर्मराज दुखी थे और बोले, "ये सभी तपस्वी शर्मिंदा हैं। जबकि ये सभी तपस्वी देख रहे हैं, आप मेरी ओर क्यों देखते हैं और मुस्कुराते हैं, जैसे कि आप खुश हैं?"

न तात हृष्यामि न च स्मयामि; प्रहर्षजो मां भजते न दर्पः
तवापदं त्वद्य समीक्ष्य रामं; सत्यव्रतं दाशरथिं स्मरामि
Mārkaṇḍeya replied: "O son! I am not delighted. Nor am I smiling. Happy pride has not possessed me. But on witnessing your misfortunes today, I have been reminded of Dāśaratha's son, Rāma, who was devoted to the truth.
मार्कंडेय ने उत्तर दिया: "हे पुत्र! मैं प्रसन्न नहीं हूं। न ही मैं मुस्कुरा रहा हूं। प्रसन्नता का अभिमान मुझ पर हावी नहीं हुआ है। लेकिन आज आपके दुर्भाग्य को देखकर मुझे दशरथ के पुत्र राम की याद आ गई है, जो सत्य के प्रति समर्पित थे।

With Lakṣmaṇa, that king also lived in the forest on the instructions of his father. O Pārtha! In ancient times, I saw him once on Mount Rishyamukha, while he was wandering around with his bow.
लक्ष्मण के साथ वह राजा भी अपने पिता की आज्ञा से वन में रहने लगा। हे पार्थ! प्राचीन काल में, मैंने उन्हें एक बार ऋष्यमुख पर्वत पर देखा था, जब वह अपना धनुष लेकर इधर-उधर घूम रहे थे।
That great-souled one was the equal of the one with a thousand eyes, the one who defeated Māyā and killed Namuci. The unblemished Dāśarathi lived in the forest on his father's instructions, so as to maintain his own dharma.
वह महान आत्मा एक हजार आंखों वाले व्यक्ति के बराबर थी, जिसने माया को हराया और नमुची को मार डाला। बेदाग दाशरथी अपने पिता के निर्देश पर जंगल में रहते थे, ताकि अपना धर्म कायम रख सकें।
He was like Śākra in his power, a great-hearted one who was invincible in battle. He gave up his comforts and roamed around in the forest. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
वह अपनी शक्ति में शक्र के समान महान हृदय वाला व्यक्ति था जो युद्ध में अजेय था। उन्होंने अपना सुख-सुविधा त्याग दिया और जंगल में घूमने लगे। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
Nābhāga, Bhagīratha and other kings have conquered this earth, right up to the boundaries of the ocean. O son! They won the worlds by observing the truth. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
नाभाग, भागीरथ और अन्य राजाओं ने समुद्र की सीमा तक इस पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है। हे वत्स उन्होंने सत्य का पालन करके विश्व को जीत लिया। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
O supreme among men! When he gave up his kingdom and his riches, the truth-abiding and virtuous king of Kāśi and Kārūṣa was called a mad dog. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! जब उन्होंने अपना राज्य और धन त्याग दिया, तो काशी और कारूष के सत्य-पालन करने वाले और धर्मात्मा राजा को पागल कुत्ता कहा गया। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
O Pārtha! O best of men! In ancient times, the righteous saptarṣi-s who blaze in the sky observed the ordinances decreed by the creator. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
हे पार्थ! हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ! प्राचीन काल में, आकाश में चमकने वाले धर्मात्मा सप्तर्षि सृष्टिकर्ता द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों का पालन करते थे। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
O Indra among men! O supreme among men! Look! Even tusked and powerful elephants, as large as mountain peaks, base themselves in accordance with the ordinances decreed by the creator. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! देखना! यहाँ तक कि दाँतों वाले और शक्तिशाली हाथी, जो पर्वत शिखर जितने बड़े हैं, स्वयं को सृष्टिकर्ता द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों के अनुसार स्थापित करते हैं। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
O Indra among men! Look! All beings conduct themselves in their own species in accordance with the ordinances decreed by the creator. Therefore, thinking that one is powerful, one should never follow that which is not dharma.
हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! देखना! सभी प्राणी अपनी-अपनी प्रजाति में सृष्टिकर्ता द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों के अनुसार आचरण करते हैं। अत: स्वयं को शक्तिशाली समझकर कभी भी उस कार्य का पालन नहीं करना चाहिए जो धर्म नहीं है।
O Pārtha! You have surpassed all beings in truth, devotion to dharma, appropriate conduct and humility. Your fame and energy are as radiant as that of the sun which gives out rays.
हे पार्थ! आपने सत्य, धर्म के प्रति समर्पण, उचित आचरण और विनम्रता में सभी प्राणियों को पार कर लिया है। आपकी प्रसिद्धि और ऊर्जा किरणें देने वाले सूर्य के समान दीप्तिमान है।
O lord of the earth! O great-minded one! After having spent a difficult time in the forest in accordance with your promise, you will again obtain blazing prosperity from the Kaurava-s through your own energy."
हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे महामनस्वी! अपने वादे के अनुसार जंगल में कठिन समय बिताने के बाद, आप फिर से अपनी शक्ति के माध्यम से कौरवों से चमकती समृद्धि प्राप्त करेंगे।
Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken these words to him and his well-wishers in the midst of all those ascetics, the maharṣi took his leave of Dhaumya and the Pārtha-s and left from there, in a northward direction.
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: उन सभी तपस्वियों के बीच में उनसे और उनके शुभचिंतकों से ये शब्द कहकर, महर्षि ने धौम्य और पार्थ-स से विदा ली और वहां से उत्तर दिशा की ओर चले गए।
