वैशंपायन उवाच स भीमसेनस्तेजस्वी तथा सर्पवशं गतः चिन्तयामास सर्पस्य वीर्यमत्यद्भुतं महत्

Vaiśampāyana said: The energetic Bhīmasena was thus overcome by the serpent. He began to think about the great and extraordinary valour of the serpent.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस प्रकार ऊर्जावान भीमसेन को सर्प ने पराजित कर दिया। वह सर्प की महान एवं असाधारण वीरता के बारे में सोचने लगा।

उवाच च महासर्पं कामया ब्रूहि पन्नग कस्त्वं भो भुजगश्रेष्ठ किं मया च करिष्यसि

He told the great serpent, "O serpent! If you so desire, please tell me. O best of serpents! Who are you and what will you do with me?

उन्होंने महान सर्प से कहा, "हे सर्प! यदि तुम ऐसा चाहते हो, तो कृपया मुझे बताओ। हे सर्पश्रेष्ठ! तुम कौन हो और मेरे साथ क्या करोगे?"

पाण्डवो भीमसेनोऽहं धर्मराजादनन्तरः नागायुतसमप्राणस्त्वया नीतः कथं वशम्

I am Pāṇḍava Bhīmasena, immediately younger to Dharmarāja. I possess the vigour equal to that of ten thousand elephants. How can I have been brought under your power?

मैं पांडव भीमसेन हूं, जो धर्मराज से ठीक छोटा है। मुझमें दस हजार हाथियों के बराबर शक्ति है। मुझे आपके वश में कैसे किया जा सकता है?

सिंहाः केसरिणो व्याघ्रा महिषा वारणास्तथा समागताश्च बहुशो निहताश्च मया मृधे

Many lions with manes, tigers, buffaloes and elephants have been encountered and slain by me in battle.

युद्ध में मेरे द्वारा अनेक सिंहों, बाघों, भैंसों और हाथियों का सामना किया गया और उन्हें मार डाला गया।

दानवाश्च पिशाचाश्च राक्षसाश्च महाबलाः भुजवेगमशक्ता मे सोढुं पन्नगसत्तम

O supreme among serpents! Dānava-s, piśāca-s and immensely strong rākṣasa-s have not been able to withstand the force of my arms.

हे नागों में श्रेष्ठ! दानव, पिशाच और अत्यंत बलशाली राक्षस मेरी भुजाओं के बल का सामना करने में सक्षम नहीं हैं।

किं नु विद्याबलं किं वा वरदानमथो तव उद्योगमपि कुर्वाणो वशगोऽस्मि कृतस्त्वया

Do you have the strength of knowledge or do you have the gift of a boon? In spite of my endeavours, you have been able to overpower me.

क्या आपके पास ज्ञान की ताकत है या आपके पास वरदान का उपहार है? मेरे प्रयासों के बावजूद, आप मुझ पर हावी होने में सक्षम हैं।

असत्यो विक्रमो नॄणामिति मे निश्चिता मतिः यथेदं मे त्वया नाग बलं प्रतिहतं महत्

O serpent! It is certain in my mind that the valour of men is useless, since you have been able to withstand my great strength."

हे सर्प! मेरे मन में यह निश्चित है कि मनुष्यों की वीरता बेकार है, क्योंकि तुम मेरी महान शक्ति का सामना करने में सक्षम हो।"

इत्येवंवादिनं वीरं भीममक्लिष्टकारिणम् भोगेन महता सर्पः समन्तात्पर्यवेष्टयत्

When the brave Bhīmā, whose deeds are unsullied, was speaking in this way, the serpent encircled him in one gigantic coil.

जब वीर भीम, जिनके कर्म निष्कलंक हैं, इस प्रकार बोल रहे थे, तब सर्प ने उन्हें एक विशाल कुंडल में घेर लिया।

निगृह्य तं महाबाहुं ततः स भुजगस्तदा विमुच्यास्य भुजौ पीनाविदं वचनमब्रवीत्

Having thus overcome the mighty-armed one, but freeing his thick arms, the serpent said,

इस प्रकार उस महाबाहु पर विजय पाकर तथा उसकी मोटी भुजाओं को मुक्त करके सर्प ने कहा,

दिष्ट्या त्वं क्षुधितस्याद्य देवैर्भक्षो महाभुज दिष्ट्या कालस्य महतः प्रियाः प्राणा हि देहिनाम्

"O mighty-armed one! I have been hungry for an extremely long time and it is fortunate that the gods and destiny have sent me my food. Life is dear to all beings that have bodies.

"हे महाबाहु! मैं बहुत लंबे समय से भूखा हूं और यह सौभाग्य की बात है कि देवताओं और भाग्य ने मेरे लिए भोजन भेजा है। शरीरधारी सभी प्राणियों को जीवन प्रिय है।"

यथा त्विदं मया प्राप्तं भुजंगत्वमरिंदम तदवश्यं मया ख्याप्यं तवाद्य शृणु सत्तम

O destroyer of enemies! O virtuous one! But I must certainly tell you the account now, how it was that I became a serpent.

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! हे धर्मात्मा! परन्तु अब मैं तुम्हें यह वृत्तान्त अवश्य बताऊंगा कि मैं किस प्रकार सर्प बना।

इमामवस्थां संप्राप्तो ह्यहं कोपान्मनीषिणाम् शापस्यान्तं परिप्रेप्सुः सर्पस्य कथयामि तत्

I attained this state because of the anger of the learned ones. Wishing to overcome the curse, I will tell you the serpent's account.

विद्वानों के क्रोध के कारण ही मेरी यह गति हुई है। शाप से उबरने की इच्छा से मैं तुम्हें सर्प का वृत्तांत सुनाऊंगा।

नहुषो नाम राजर्षिर्व्यक्तं ते श्रोत्रमागतः तवैव पूर्वः पूर्वेषामायोर्वंशकरः सुतः

You must have heard of the rājarṣi named Nāhuṣa. He was your ancestor and that of your forefathers. He was Āyu's son and the extender of that lineage. I am he.

आपने नहुष नाम के राजर्षि के बारे में सुना होगा। वह तुम्हारा और तुम्हारे पूर्वजों का पूर्वज था। वह आयु का पुत्र और उस वंश का विस्तारक था। मैं वह हूं।

सोऽहं शापादगस्त्यस्य ब्राह्मणानवमन्य च इमामवस्थामापन्नः पश्य दैवमिदं मम

Because of the disrespect shown to brāhmana-s and because of Āgastya's curse, I have attained this state. Look at what fate has wrought on me.

ब्राह्मणों का अनादर करने के कारण तथा अगस्त्य के शाप के कारण मुझे यह अवस्था प्राप्त हुई है। देखो भाग्य ने मेरे साथ क्या किया है।

त्वां चेदवध्यमायान्तमतीव प्रियदर्शनम् अहमद्योपयोक्ष्यामि विधानं पश्य यादृशम्

You are my descendant and you are extremely handsome. Therefore, you should not be killed by me. But look at destiny. I will devour you today.

तुम मेरे वंशज हो और अत्यंत सुन्दर हो। अत: तुम्हें मेरे द्वारा नहीं मारा जाना चाहिए। लेकिन नियति देखो. मैं आज तुम्हें खा जाऊँगा।

न हि मे मुच्यते कश्चित्कथंचिद्ग्रहणं गतः गजो वा महिषो वापि षष्ठे काले नरोत्तम

O supreme among men! Once I have grasped a prey on the sixth day, whether it is an elephant or a buffalo, it can never free itself from me.

हे मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ! एक बार जब मैंने छठे दिन किसी शिकार को पकड़ लिया, चाहे वह हाथी हो या भैंस, वह कभी भी मुझसे मुक्त नहीं हो सकता।

नासि केवलसर्पेण तिर्यग्योनिषु वर्तता गृहीतः कौरवश्रेष्ठ वरदानमिदं मम

O best of Kaurava-s! You have not only been grasped by a serpent that belongs to the inferior species. I have the gift of a boon.

हे कौरवश्रेष्ठ! तुम्हें न केवल निम्न जाति के सर्प ने जकड़ लिया है। मेरे पास वरदान का उपहार है.

पतता हि विमानाग्रान्मया शक्रासनाद्द्रुतम् कुरु शापान्तमित्युक्तो भगवान्मुनिसत्तमः

When I was swiftly falling from the vimāna on which Śākra is seated, I asked the illustrious supreme sage to free me from the curse.

जब मैं तेजी से विमान से गिर रहा था जिस पर शक्र बैठे थे, मैंने शानदार परम ऋषि से मुझे श्राप से मुक्त करने के लिए कहा।

स मामुवाच तेजस्वी कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः मोक्षस्ते भविता राजन्कस्माच्चित्कालपर्ययात्

Flooded with compassion, the energetic one replied, "O king! You will be freed after some time has passed."

करुणा से भर कर, ऊर्जावान ने उत्तर दिया, "हे राजा! कुछ समय बीतने के बाद आप मुक्त हो जायेंगे।"

ततोऽस्मि पतितो भूमौ न च मामजहात्स्मृतिः स्मार्तमस्ति पुराणं मे यथैवाधिगतं तथा

Then I fell down on the ground, but did not lose my memory. Therefore, what has been determined in ancient times is fixed in my mind and memory.

फिर मैं जमीन पर गिर पड़ा, लेकिन मेरी याददाश्त नहीं गई. अत: प्राचीन काल में जो निर्धारित किया गया था वह मेरे मन और स्मृति में स्थिर है।

यस्तु ते व्याहृतान्प्रश्नान्प्रतिब्रूयाद्विशेषवित् स त्वां मोक्षयिता शापादिति मामब्रवीदृषिः

The riṣi told me, "He who replies accurately to your questions, will free you from your curse.

ऋषि ने मुझसे कहा, "जो तुम्हारे प्रश्नों का सटीक उत्तर देगा, वह तुम्हें तुम्हारे श्राप से मुक्त कर देगा।

गृहीतस्य त्वया राजन्प्राणिनोऽपि बलीयसः सत्त्वभ्रंशोऽधिकस्यापि सर्वस्याशु भविष्यति

O king! Once grasped by you, even if it is a being that is stronger and superior to you, it will immediately lose its mettle."

हे राजा! एक बार आपकी पकड़ में आने के बाद, भले ही वह कोई ऐसा प्राणी हो जो आपसे अधिक मजबूत और श्रेष्ठ हो, वह तुरंत अपनी ताकत खो देगा।"

इति चाप्यहमश्रौषं वचस्तेषां दयावताम् मयि संजातहार्दानामथ तेऽन्तर्हिता द्विजाः

Affectionate towards me and driven by compassion, those brāhmana-s then instantly disappeared. O immensely radiant one! I thus assumed the form of a serpent.

मेरे प्रति स्नेह और करुणा से प्रेरित होकर, वे ब्राह्मण तुरंत गायब हो गए। हे अत्यंत तेजस्वी! इस प्रकार मैंने सर्प का रूप धारण कर लिया।

सोऽहं परमदुष्कर्मा वसामि निरयेऽशुचौ सर्पयोनिमिमां प्राप्य कालाकाङ्क्षी महाद्युते

I live in this unholy hell, performing evil deeds, waiting for the appointed time."

मैं इस अपवित्र नरक में बुरे कर्म करता हुआ, नियत समय की प्रतीक्षा करता हुआ रहता हूँ।”

तमुवाच महाबाहुर्भीमसेनो भुजंगमम् न ते कुप्ये महासर्प न चात्मानं विगर्हये

Then the mighty-armed Bhīmasena told the serpent, "O great serpent! I am not angry with you. Nor do I blame myself.

तब महाबाहु भीमसेन ने सर्प से कहा, "हे महान सर्प! मैं तुमसे क्रोधित नहीं हूं। न ही मैं स्वयं को दोषी मानता हूं।"

यस्मादभावी भावी वा मनुष्यः सुखदुःखयोः आगमे यदि वापाये न तत्र ग्लपयेन्मनः

Sometimes a man is capable of bringing happiness or unhappiness. At other times, he is incapable. One's mind should not be worried at these comings and goings.

कभी-कभी मनुष्य सुख या दुःख लाने में सक्षम होता है। अन्य समय में वह असमर्थ होता है। इन आने-जाने से मन को चिंतित नहीं होना चाहिए।

दैवं पुरुषकारेण को निवर्तितुमर्हति दैवमेव परं मन्ये पुरुषार्थो निरर्थकः

How can one's own exertions rise above destiny? I think that destiny is supreme and endeavours are meaningless.

किसी का अपना परिश्रम भाग्य से ऊपर कैसे उठ सकता है? मेरा मानना ​​है कि नियति सर्वोच्च है और प्रयास निरर्थक हैं।

पश्य दैवोपघाताद्धि भुजवीर्यव्यपाश्रयम् इमामवस्थां संप्राप्तमनिमित्तमिहाद्य माम्

Behold. Because of adverse destiny, I have lost the strength of my arms. Without any immediate reason, I have been reduced to this state now.

देखो. प्रारब्ध की प्रतिकूलता के कारण मैंने अपनी भुजाओं की शक्ति खो दी है। बिना किसी तात्कालिक कारण के मुझे अब इस स्थिति में पहुंचा दिया गया है।'

किं तु नाद्यानुशोचामि तथात्मानं विनाशितम् यथा तु विपिने न्यस्तान्भ्रातॄन्राज्यपरिच्युतान्

But today, I do not sorrow as muc over my own destruction as I do over my brothers, who have been dislodged from their kingdom and have been exiled to this wilderness.

लेकिन आज, मुझे अपने विनाश पर उतना दुःख नहीं होता जितना मुझे अपने भाइयों पर होता है, जिन्हें उनके राज्य से बेदखल कर दिया गया है और इस जंगल में निर्वासित कर दिया गया है।

हिमवांश्च सुदुर्गोऽयं यक्षराक्षससंकुलः मां च ते समुदीक्षन्तः प्रपतिष्यन्ति विह्वलाः

The Himālaya-s are difficult of access and are infested with yakṣa-s and rākṣasa-s. On seeing me thus, they will be confounded and will fall down.

हिमालय तक पहुंच कठिन है और ये यक्ष और राक्षसों से प्रभावित हैं। मुझे इस प्रकार देखकर वे चकित हो जायेंगे और गिर पड़ेंगे।

विनष्टमथ वा श्रुत्वा भविष्यन्ति निरुद्यमाः धर्मशीला मया ते हि बाध्यन्ते राज्यगृद्धिना

On hearing of my destruction, they will lose all enterprise. They follow dharma. It was I who drove them, because of my greed for the kingdom.

मेरे विनाश के बारे में सुनकर, वे अपना सारा उद्यम खो देंगे। वे धर्म का पालन करते हैं. राज्य के लोभ के कारण मैंने ही उन्हें भगाया था।

अथ वा नार्जुनो धीमान्विषादमुपयास्यति सर्वास्त्रविदनाधृष्यो देवगन्धर्वराक्षसैः

Or perhaps the intelligent Arjuna, who knows all the weapons and is invincible to the gods, the gāndharva-s and the rākṣasa-s, will be overcome by sorrow.

या शायद बुद्धिमान अर्जुन, जो सभी हथियारों को जानता है और देवताओं, गंधर्वों और राक्षसों के लिए अजेय है, दुःख से उबर जाएगा।

समर्थः स महाबाहुरेकाह्ना सुमहाबलः देवराजमपि स्थानात्प्रच्यावयितुमोजसा

The mighty-armed one, immensely strong, is capable, with his strength, of dislodging the king of the gods from his seat,

महाबाहु, अत्यंत बलवान, अपनी शक्ति से देवताओं के राजा को उसके सिंहासन से उखाड़ने में सक्षम है,

किं पुनर्धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् विद्विष्टं सर्वलोकस्य दम्भलोभपरायणम्

not to speak of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, deceitful in gambling, hated by all the worlds and addicted to insolence and avarice.

धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों के बारे में तो बात ही मत कीजिए, वे जुए में धोखेबाज, सभी लोकों से घृणा करने वाले और उद्दंडता तथा लोभ के आदी थे।

मातरं चैव शोचामि कृपणां पुत्रगृद्धिनीम् यास्माकं नित्यमाशास्ते महत्त्वमधिकं परैः

I sorrow over my poor mother, so loving towards her sons. She always wished that we might attain a greatness superior to that of others.

मुझे अपनी बेचारी माँ पर दुःख होता है, जो अपने बेटों से इतनी प्रेम करती है। वह सदैव चाहती थी कि हम दूसरों से श्रेष्ठ महानता प्राप्त करें।

कथं नु तस्यानाथाया मद्विनाशाद्भुजंगम अफलास्ते भविष्यन्ति मयि सर्वे मनोरथाः

O serpent! At my destruction, she will be without a protector. All the desires that she had for me will become unsuccessful.

हे सर्प! मेरे नष्ट होने पर वह रक्षक विहीन हो जायेगी। उसके मन में मेरे प्रति जो भी अभिलाषाएँ थीं, वे सब निष्फल हो जाएँगी।

नकुलः सहदेवश्च यमजौ गुरुवर्तिनौ मद्बाहुबलसंस्तब्धौ नित्यं पुरुषमानिनौ

The twins, Nākula and Sahadeva, followed their elder. They were always protected through the strength of my arms and were proud of their manliness.

जुड़वाँ बच्चे, नकुल और सहदेव, अपने बड़े भाई के पीछे चले गए। मेरी भुजाओं के बल से वे सदैव सुरक्षित रहते थे और उन्हें अपने पौरुष पर गर्व था।

निरुत्साहौ भविष्येते भ्रष्टवीर्यपराक्रमौ मद्विनाशात्परिद्यूनाविति मे वर्तते मतिः

They will lose their enterprise. They will be dislodged from prowess and valour. At my destruction, they will be without protection. This is what I think."

वे अपना उद्यम खो देंगे. वे पराक्रम और पराक्रम से च्युत हो जायेंगे। मेरे विनाश पर, वे सुरक्षा से रहित हो जायेंगे। ऐसा मेरा मानना ​​है।"

एवंविधं बहु तदा विललाप वृकोदरः भुजंगभोगसंरुद्धो नाशकच्च विचेष्टितुम्

In this way, Vṛkodara lamented a lot. He was coiled by the serpent and could not move at all.

इस प्रकार वृकोदर ने बहुत शोक किया। वह साँप से लिपटा हुआ था और बिल्कुल भी हिल नहीं पा रहा था।

युधिष्ठिरस्तु कौन्तेय बभूवास्वस्थचेतनः अनिष्टदर्शनान्घोरानुत्पातान्परिचिन्तयन्

Kaunteya Yudhiṣṭhira saw all the terrible omens and was disturbed in his mind. He thought about these evil portents.

कौन्तेय युधिष्ठिर ने सभी भयानक अपशकुनों को देखा और उनके मन में व्याकुलता उत्पन्न हो गयी। उसने इन बुरे संकेतों के बारे में सोचा।

दारुणं ह्यशिवं नादं शिवा दक्षिणतः स्थिता दीप्तायां दिशि वित्रस्ता रौति तस्याश्रमस्य ह

The sky to the south of the hermitage was ablaze. A she-jackal stationed herself there and let out a terrible and dreadful howl.

आश्रम के दक्षिण का आकाश प्रज्वलित था। एक सियार वहाँ खड़ी हो गई और उसने भयानक और भयावह चीख निकाली।

एकपक्षाक्षिचरणा वर्तिका घोरदर्शना रुधिरं वमन्ती ददृशे प्रत्यादित्यमपस्वरा

There was a dreadful-looking quail, with one wing, one eye and one foot. It was seen to vomit blood, screeching harshly in the direction of the sun.

वहाँ एक भयानक दिखने वाली बटेर थी, जिसका एक पंख, एक आँख और एक पैर था। उसे सूरज की ओर जोर-जोर से चिल्लाते हुए खून की उल्टी करते देखा गया।

प्रववावनिलो रूक्षश्चण्डः शर्करकर्षणः अपसव्यानि सर्वाणि मृगपक्षिरुतानि च

A hot and rough wind began to blow, attracting gravel. All the animals and birds wailed towards the south.

बजरी को आकर्षित करते हुए गर्म और तेज़ हवा चलने लगी। सभी पशु-पक्षी दक्षिण की ओर विलाप करने लगे।

पृष्ठतो वायसः कृष्णो याहि याहीति वाशति मुहुर्मुहुः प्रस्फुरति दक्षिणोऽस्य भुजस्तथा

A black crow cawed from the back, "Go! Go!" His right arm repeatedly trembled.

पीछे से एक काला कौआ चिल्लाया, "जाओ! जाओ!" उसका दाहिना हाथ बार-बार कांपता था।

हृदयं चरणश्चापि वामोऽस्य परिवर्तते सव्यस्याक्ष्णो विकारश्चाप्यनिष्टः समपद्यत

There were tremors in his heart and in his left leg. Foretelling of evil, his left eye began to throb.

उसके हृदय और बाएँ पैर में कम्पन हो रहे थे। अनिष्ट की आशंका से उसकी बायीं आँख फड़कने लगी।

स धर्मराजो मेधावी शङ्कमानो महद्भयम् द्रौपदीं परिपप्रच्छ क्व भीम इति भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Sensing great danger, the intelligent Dharmarāja asked Draupadī, "Where is Bhīmā?"

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! बड़े खतरे को भांपते हुए, बुद्धिमान धर्मराज ने द्रौपदी से पूछा, "भीम कहाँ है?"

शशंस तस्मै पाञ्चाली चिरयातं वृकोदरम् स प्रतस्थे महाबाहुर्धौम्येन सहितो नृपः

Pāñcālī answered that Vṛkodara had been gone for a long time. Accompanied by Dhaumya, the mighty-armed king then left.

पंचाली ने उत्तर दिया कि वृकोडारा बहुत समय पहले ही चले गए थे। तब महाबाहु राजा धौम्य के साथ चले गये।

द्रौपद्या रक्षणं कार्यमित्युवाच धनंजयम् नकुलं सहदेवं च व्यादिदेश द्विजान्प्रति

He gave instructions to Dhanañjayā to protect Draupadī. He instructed Nākula and Sahadeva to tend to the brāhmana-s.

उन्होंने धनंजय को द्रौपदी की रक्षा करने का निर्देश दिया। उन्होंने नकुल और सहदेव को ब्राह्मणों की देखभाल करने का निर्देश दिया।

स तस्य पदमुन्नीय तस्मादेवाश्रमात्प्रभुः ददर्श पृथिवीं चिह्नैर्भीमस्य परिचिह्निताम्

Then the lord followed Bhīmā's footprints from the hermitage and saw the earth marked with the signs of his passage.

तब भगवान ने आश्रम से भीम के पदचिन्हों का अनुसरण किया और पृथ्वी को उनके मार्ग के चिन्हों से चिह्नित देखा।

धावतस्तस्य वीरस्य मृगार्थे वातरंहसः ऊरुवातविनिर्भग्नान्द्रुमान्व्यावर्जितान्पथि

As the brave one, with the speed of the wind, had rushed forward on his hunt, the wind created by his thighs had broken down and strewn trees along the path.

जैसे ही वह बहादुर, हवा की गति के साथ, अपने शिकार पर आगे बढ़ा, उसकी जांघों द्वारा बनाई गई हवा टूट गई और रास्ते में पेड़ बिखर गए।

स गत्वा तैस्तदा चिह्नैर्ददर्श गिरिगह्वरे गृहीतं भुजगेन्द्रेण निश्चेष्टमनुजं तथा

Following these signs, he reached the mountainous cavern and saw his younger brother immobile there, in the grasp of that Indra among serpents.

इन संकेतों का अनुसरण करते हुए, वह पहाड़ी गुफा तक पहुंच गया और वहां उसने अपने छोटे भाई को सांपों के बीच इंद्र की पकड़ में स्थिर देखा।
