वैश्रवण उवाच युधिष्ठिर धृतिर्दाक्ष्यं देशकालौ पराक्रमः लोकतन्त्रविधानानामेष पञ्चविधो विधिः

Vaiśravaṇa said: "O Yudhiṣṭhira! Perseverance, steadfastness, place, time and valour—these are the five principles that determine results in this world.

वैश्रवण ने कहा: "हे युधिष्ठिर! दृढ़ता, दृढ़ता, स्थान, समय और वीरता - ये पांच सिद्धांत हैं जो इस दुनिया में परिणाम निर्धारित करते हैं।

धृतिमन्तश्च दक्षाश्च स्वे स्वे कर्मणि भारत पराक्रमविधानज्ञा नराः कृतयुगेऽभवन्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In kṛta yuga, men persevered and were skilled in their respective tasks and were well versed in the principles of valour.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कृत युग में, लोग दृढ़ रहते थे और अपने-अपने कार्यों में कुशल थे और वीरता के सिद्धांतों में पारंगत थे।

धृतिमान्देशकालज्ञः सर्वधर्मविधानवित् क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठ पृथिवीमनुशास्ति वै

O best of kṣatriya-s! A kṣatriya who has perseverance, knows the place and the time and the principle of all dharma, rules the earth.

हे क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठ! एक क्षत्रिय जिसके पास दृढ़ता है, वह स्थान, समय और सभी धर्मों के सिद्धांत को जानता है, वह पृथ्वी पर शासन करता है।

य एवं वर्तते पार्थ पुरुषः सर्वकर्मसु स लोके लभते वीर यशः प्रेत्य च सद्गतिम्

O Pārtha! O brave one! A man who acts in this fashion in all his deeds, obtains fame in this world and a good end after death.

हे पार्थ! हे वीर! जो मनुष्य अपने सभी कर्मों में इसी प्रकार आचरण करता है, उसे इस लोक में प्रसिद्धि मिलती है और मृत्यु के बाद उसका अंत अच्छा होता है।

देशकालान्तरप्रेप्सुः कृत्वा शक्रः पराक्रमम् संप्राप्तस्त्रिदिवे राज्यं वृत्रहा वसुभिः सह

Śākra, the destroyer of Vṛtra, together with the Vasu-s, exhibited his valour at the right place and time and obtained the kingdom of heaven.

वृत्र के विनाशक शक्र ने वसुओं के साथ मिलकर सही स्थान और समय पर अपनी वीरता का प्रदर्शन किया और स्वर्ग का राज्य प्राप्त किया।

पापात्मा पापबुद्धिर्यः पापमेवानुवर्तते कर्मणामविभागज्ञः प्रेत्य चेह च नश्यति

The one who is evil in his soul and evil in his intelligence pursues evil alone. Not knowing the results of his actions, he is destroyed now, and after death.

जो आत्मा में दुष्ट और बुद्धि में दुष्ट है, वह अकेला ही बुराई का पीछा करता है। अपने कर्मों के फल को न जानने के कारण वह आज भी नष्ट हो जाता है और मृत्यु के बाद भी।

अकालज्ञः सुदुर्मेधाः कार्याणामविशेषवित् वृथाचारसमारम्भः प्रेत्य चेह च नश्यति

The stupid one who does not know the time and the difference between different types of deeds, is destroyed now, and after death, and his efforts are in vain.

जो मूर्ख समय तथा विभिन्न प्रकार के कर्मों का भेद नहीं जानता, वह आज तथा मरने के बाद भी नष्ट हो जाता है तथा उसके प्रयत्न व्यर्थ हो जाते हैं।

साहसे वर्तमानानां निकृतीनां दुरात्मनाम् सर्वसामर्थ्यलिप्सूनां पापो भवति निश्चयः

Violent, deceitful and evil-minded ones decide to commit sin, covetous of obtaining everything. O bull among the Bhārata lineage! This Bhīmasena is fearless.

हिंसक, धोखेबाज और दुष्ट मन वाले सब कुछ पाने के लालच में पाप करने का निर्णय लेते हैं। हे भरत वंश में बैल! ये भीमसेन निर्भय हैं.

अधर्मज्ञोऽवलिप्तश्च बालबुद्धिरमर्षणः निर्भयो भीमसेनोऽयं तं शाधि पुरुषर्षभ

He does not know dharma. He is prone to violence. He is childish in intelligence. He is intolerant. Therefore, instruct him.

वह धर्म को नहीं जानता. वह हिंसा पर उतारू है. वह बुद्धि में बचकाना है। वह असहिष्णु है. अत: उसे उपदेश दो।

आर्ष्टिषेणस्य राजर्षेः प्राप्य भूयस्त्वमाश्रमम् तामिस्रं प्रथमं पक्षं वीतशोकभयो वस

When you have returned to rājarṣi Ārṣṭiṣeṇa's hermitage, for the first lunar fortnight, dwell there without any fear.

जब तुम पहले चंद्र पखवाड़े के लिए राजर्षि आर्ष्टिषेण के आश्रम में लौट आओ, तो बिना किसी डर के वहीं रहो।

अलकाः सह गन्धर्वैर्यक्षैश्च सह राक्षसैः मन्नियुक्ता मनुष्येन्द्र सर्वे च गिरिवासिनः रक्षन्तु त्वा महाबाहो सहितं द्विजसत्तमैः

O Indra among men! O mighty-armed one! The gāndharva-s, the yakṣa-s, the rākṣasa-s, the inhabitants of Alakā and all the denizens of the mountain will protect you, and the supreme among brāhmana-s, on my orders.

हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! हे महाबाहु! गंधर्व, यक्ष, राक्षस, अलका के निवासी और पर्वत के सभी निवासी, मेरे आदेश पर ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ आपकी रक्षा करेंगे।

साहसेषु च संतिष्ठन्निह शैले वृकोदरः वार्यतां साध्वयं राजंस्त्वया धर्मभृतां वर

O king! O supreme among those who uphold dharma! This Vṛkodara has been committing violent acts on this mountain. Restrain him.

हे राजा! हे धर्म का पालन करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! यह वृकोदर इस पर्वत पर हिंसक कृत्य करता रहा है। उस पर लगाम लगाओ.

इतः परं च राजेन्द्र द्रक्ष्यन्ति वनगोचराः उपस्थास्यन्ति च सदा रक्षिष्यन्ति च सर्वशः

O Indra among kings! From now on, all the inhabitants of the forest will look after you, serve you and always protect you.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! अब से जंगल के सभी निवासी आपकी देखभाल करेंगे, आपकी सेवा करेंगे और हमेशा आपकी रक्षा करेंगे।

तथैव चान्नपानानि स्वादूनि च बहूनि च उपस्थास्यन्ति वो गृह्य मत्प्रेष्याः पुरुषर्षभ

O bull among men! My attendants will serve you with a lot of tasty food and drink.

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! मेरे परिचारक आपको ढेर सारा स्वादिष्ट भोजन और पेय परोसेंगे।

यथा जिष्णुर्महेन्द्रस्य यथा वायोर्वृकोदरः धर्मस्य त्वं यथा तात योगोत्पन्नो निजः सुतः

O son! Just as Jiṣṇu is under Māhendra's protection, Vṛkodara under Vāyu's, you under Dharma's, since you are his own son obtained through yoga,

हे वत्स जैसे जिष्णु महेंद्र के संरक्षण में हैं, वृकोदर वायु के संरक्षण में हैं, आप धर्म के अधीन हैं, क्योंकि आप योग के माध्यम से प्राप्त उनके अपने पुत्र हैं,

आत्मजावात्मसंपन्नौ यमौ चोभौ यथाश्विनोः रक्ष्यास्तद्वन्ममापीह यूयं सर्वे युधिष्ठिर

and the twins under the Aśvin-s, each son being respectively protected, from now on, you will be under my protection too. O Yudhiṣṭhira!

और अश्विन-एस के अधीन जुड़वाँ बच्चे, प्रत्येक पुत्र क्रमशः संरक्षित हैं, अब से, तुम भी मेरी सुरक्षा में रहोगे। हे युधिष्ठिर!

अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः सर्वधर्मविशेषवित् भीमसेनादवरजः फल्गुनः कुशली दिवि

Phālguna, knowledgeable in all aspects of artha and well versed in all aspects of dharma, immediately younger to Bhīmasena, has become skilled in heaven.

फाल्गुन, अर्थ के सभी पहलुओं में जानकार और धर्म के सभी पहलुओं में पारंगत, भीमसेन से तुरंत छोटा, स्वर्ग में कुशल हो गया है।

याः काश्चन मता लोकेष्वग्र्याः परमसंपदः जन्मप्रभृति ताः सर्वाः स्थितास्तात धनंजये

O son! Right from his birth, every superior trait, perceived to lead to the attainment of the supreme of worlds, has been vested in Dhanañjayā.

हे वत्स उनके जन्म से ही, प्रत्येक श्रेष्ठ गुण, जो सर्वोच्च लोक की प्राप्ति की ओर ले जाता है, धनंजय में निहित है।

दमो दानं बलं बुद्धिर्ह्रीर्धृतिस्तेज उत्तमम् एतान्यपि महासत्त्वे स्थितान्यमिततेजसि

Self-control, generosity, strength, intelligence, humility, perseverance and supreme energy—all of these are present in the great-spirited one, whose energy is infinite.

आत्म-नियंत्रण, उदारता, शक्ति, बुद्धि, विनम्रता, दृढ़ता और सर्वोच्च ऊर्जा - ये सभी उस महान आत्मा में मौजूद हैं, जिसकी ऊर्जा अनंत है।

न मोहात्कुरुते जिष्णुः कर्म पाण्डव गर्हितम् न पार्थस्य मृषोक्तानि कथयन्ति नरा नृषु

O Pāṇḍava! Jiṣṇu never commits a reprehensible act. Nor do men recount any falsehoods having been uttered by Pārtha.

हे पाण्डव! जिष्णु कभी निंदनीय कार्य नहीं करता। न ही मनुष्य पार्थ द्वारा कही गई किसी झूठी बात का वर्णन करते हैं।

स देवपितृगन्धर्वैः कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः मानितः कुरुतेऽस्त्राणि शक्रसद्मनि भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! That extender of deeds of the Kuru lineage has been learning the art of weapons in Śākra's abode, honoured by the gods, the ancestors and the gāndharva-s.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! कुरु वंश का वह कर्म विस्तारक देवताओं, पूर्वजों और गंधर्वों द्वारा सम्मानित होकर, शक्र के निवास में हथियारों की कला सीख रहा है।

योऽसौ सर्वान्महीपालान्धर्मेण वशमानयत् स शंतनुर्महातेजाः पितुस्तव पितामहः प्रीयते पार्थ पार्थेन दिवि गाण्डीवधन्वना

O Pārtha! The immensely energetic Śāntanu, your father's grandfather, who brought all the lords of the earth under his suzerainty through dharma, is pleased in heaven with Pārtha Gandivadhanva.

हे पार्थ! आपके पिता के दादा, अत्यंत ऊर्जावान शांतनु, जिन्होंने धर्म के माध्यम से पृथ्वी के सभी देवताओं को अपनी अधीनता में लाया, स्वर्ग में पार्थ गांडीवधन्वा के साथ प्रसन्न हैं।

सम्यक्चासौ महावीर्यः कुलधुर्य इव स्थितः पितॄन्देवांस्तथा विप्रान्पूजयित्वा महायशाः सप्त मुख्यान्महामेधानाहरद्यमुनां प्रति

That immensely valorous and greatly famous king, the upholder of his lineage, always honoured the ancestors, the gods, the riṣi-s and the brāhmana-s and performed seven major sacrifices on the banks of the Yāmuna.

वह अत्यंत वीर और अत्यंत प्रसिद्ध राजा, अपने वंश का संरक्षक, सदैव पितरों, देवताओं, ऋषियों और ब्राह्मणों का सम्मान करता था और यमुना के तट पर सात प्रमुख यज्ञ करता था।

अधिराजः स राजंस्त्वां शंतनुः प्रपितामहः स्वर्गजिच्छक्रलोकस्थः कुशलं परिपृच्छति

O king! That lord of kings, your great grandfather Śāntanu, has attained heaven and now resides in Śākra's world. He has asked about your welfare."

हे राजा! राजाओं के स्वामी, आपके परदादा शांतनु, स्वर्ग प्राप्त कर चुके हैं और अब शक्र की दुनिया में रहते हैं। उन्होंने तुम्हारा कुशलक्षेम पूछा है।”

वैशंपायन उवाच ततः शक्तिं गदां खड्गं धनुश्च भरतर्षभ प्राध्वं कृत्वा नमश्चक्रे कुबेराय वृकोदरः

Vaiśampāyana said: Vṛkodara, bull among the Bhārata lineage, then laid down his spear, his club, his sword and his bow. He bowed down in obeisance before Kubera.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: वृकोदर, भरत वंश के बैल, ने फिर अपना भाला, अपनी गदा, अपनी तलवार और अपना धनुष रख दिया। वह कुबेर के सामने झुककर प्रणाम करने लगा।

ततोऽब्रवीद्धनाध्यक्षः शरण्यः शरणागतम् मानहा भव शत्रूणां सुहृदां नन्दिवर्धनः

The lord of riches, refuge of those who seek sanctuary, then told the one who had sought shelter, "May you be the one who destroys the pride of your enemies and increases the joy of your well-wishers.

धन के स्वामी, शरण चाहने वालों के आश्रय, फिर शरण मांगने वाले से कहा, "तुम अपने शत्रुओं के गर्व को नष्ट करने वाले और अपने शुभचिंतकों के आनंद को बढ़ाने वाले हो।

स्वेषु वेश्मसु रम्येषु वसतामित्रतापनाः कामानुपहरिष्यन्ति यक्षा वो भरतर्षभाः

O scorcher of enemies! O bulls among the Bhārata lineage! Dwell in these beautiful residences. The yakṣa-s will procure for you everything that you desire.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! हे भरत वंश के बैलों! इन सुन्दर आवासों में निवास करो। यक्ष आपके लिए वह सब कुछ खरीदेंगे जो आप चाहते हैं।

शीघ्रमेव गुडाकेशः कृतास्त्रः पुरुषर्षभः साक्षान्मघवता सृष्टः संप्राप्स्यति धनंजयः

Having obtained the weapons and having obtained leave from Maghavan himself, Gudākeśa Dhanañjayā, bull among men, will return soon."

हथियार प्राप्त करने और स्वयं मघवन से छुट्टी प्राप्त करने के बाद, गुडाकेश धनंजय, पुरुषों के बीच बैल, जल्द ही वापस आएंगे।"

एवमुत्तमकर्माणमनुशिष्य युधिष्ठिरम् अस्तं गिरिवरश्रेष्ठं प्रययौ गुह्यकाधिपः

Having thus instructed Yudhiṣṭhira, whose deeds were virtuous, the lord of the guhyaka-s, returned to his home in the supreme of mountains.

इस प्रकार युधिष्ठिर को उपदेश देकर, जिनके कर्म पुण्यपूर्ण थे, गुह्यक-नरेश, पर्वतों के सर्वोच्च स्थान पर अपने घर लौट आये।

तं परिस्तोमसंकीर्णैर्नानारत्नविभूषितैः यानैरनुययुर्यक्षा राक्षसाश्च सहस्रशः

Thousands of rākṣasa-s and yakṣa-s followed him in their vehicles, covered with decorated cushions and adorned with many different kinds of gems.

हजारों राक्षस और यक्ष अपने वाहनों में, सजे हुए तकियों से ढके हुए और विभिन्न प्रकार के रत्नों से सुसज्जित होकर उनके पीछे चल रहे थे।

पक्षिणामिव निर्घोषः कुबेरसदनं प्रति बभूव परमाश्वानामैरावतपथे यताम्

Those supreme horses neighed as they proceeded like birds towards Kubera's abode, following Airāvata's path.

वे श्रेष्ठ घोड़े हिनहिनाते हुए हिनहिनाते हुए पक्षियों की भाँति ऐरावत के मार्ग का अनुसरण करते हुए कुबेर के निवास की ओर बढ़े।

ते जग्मुस्तूर्णमाकाशं धनाधिपतिवाजिनः प्रकर्षन्त इवाभ्राणि पिबन्त इव मारुतम्

The steeds of the lord of riches travelled as if they were splitting the sky, trailing clouds and feeding on the wind.

धन के स्वामी के घोड़े ऐसे यात्रा कर रहे थे मानो वे आकाश को चीर रहे हों, बादलों का पीछा कर रहे हों और हवा का सहारा ले रहे हों।

ततस्तानि शरीराणि गतसत्त्वानि रक्षसाम् अपाकृष्यन्त शैलाग्राद्धनाधिपतिशासनात्

On the instructions of the lord of riches, the dead bodies of the rākṣasa-s were removed from the summit of the mountain.

धन के स्वामी के निर्देश पर, राक्षसों के शवों को पर्वत के शिखर से हटा दिया गया।

तेषां हि शापकालोऽसौ कृतोऽगस्त्येन धीमता समरे निहतास्तस्मात्सर्वे मणिमता सह

The wise Āgastya had determined this at the time for the curse. And therefore they, together with Maniman, had been slain in battle.

मुनि अगस्त्य ने शाप के समय ही यह निश्चय कर लिया था। और इसलिए वे, मणिमन सहित, युद्ध में मारे गए थे।

पाण्डवास्तु महात्मानस्तेषु वेश्मसु तां क्षपाम् सुखमूषुर्गतोद्वेगाः पूजिताः सर्वराक्षसैः

The great-souled Pāṇḍava-s happily spent the night in those residences. They were free from anxiety and were honoured by all the rākṣasa-s.

महात्मा पाण्डवों ने उन आवासों में प्रसन्नतापूर्वक रात्रि व्यतीत की। वे चिंता से मुक्त थे और सभी राक्षसों द्वारा सम्मानित थे।
