Vaiśampāyana said: The Pāṇḍava-s lived comfortably on that mountain. When the rākṣasa-s and Bhīmasena's son had left,

and they were without Bhīmasena, who had gone to roam around as he willed, a rākṣasa abducted Dharmarāja, the twins and Kṛṣṇā.

He lived with the Pārtha-s, covetous of their quivers and bows and waited for his chance. He was known by the name of Jaṭāsura.

Having grasped all the weapons and seizing Draupadī and the three Pāṇḍava-s, he fled.

येऽन्ये केचिन्मनुष्येषु तिर्यग्योनिगता अपि गन्धर्वयक्षरक्षांसि वयांसि पशवस्तथा मनुष्यानुपजीवन्ति ततस्त्वमुपजीवसि

Whether one is a human or whether one belongs to inferior species, the gāndharva-s, the yakṣa-s and the rākṣasa-s, birds and animals, draw their sustenance from humans and so do you.

चाहे कोई मनुष्य हो या निम्न जाति का हो, गंधर्व, यक्ष और राक्षस, पक्षी और जानवर, अपना भरण-पोषण मनुष्यों से करते हैं और आप भी ऐसा ही करते हैं।

समृद्ध्या ह्यस्य लोकस्य लोको युष्माकमृध्यते इमं च लोकं शोचन्तमनुशोचन्ति देवताः पूज्यमानाश्च वर्धन्ते हव्यकव्यैर्यथाविधि

If there is prosperity in our world, there is prosperity in your world too. If our world suffers, the gods suffer along with us. They prosper through worship and oblations to the gods and the ancestors, offered through rituals.

अगर हमारी दुनिया में समृद्धि है तो आपकी दुनिया में भी समृद्धि है। यदि हमारी दुनिया को कष्ट होता है, तो हमारे साथ-साथ देवताओं को भी कष्ट होता है। वे अनुष्ठानों के माध्यम से देवताओं और पितरों की पूजा और तर्पण के माध्यम से समृद्ध होते हैं।

वयं राष्ट्रस्य गोप्तारो रक्षितारश्च राक्षस राष्ट्रस्यारक्ष्यमाणस्य कुतो भूतिः कुतः सुखम्

O rākṣasa! We are the guardians and the protectors of the kingdom. If kingdoms are unprotected, how can there be prosperity? How can there be happiness?

हे राक्षस! हम राज्य के संरक्षक और रक्षक हैं। यदि राज्य असुरक्षित हैं, तो समृद्धि कैसे हो सकती है? सुख कैसे हो सकता है?

न च राजावमन्तव्यो रक्षसा जात्वनागसि अणुरप्यपचारश्च नास्त्यस्माकं नराशन

Unless there has been an act of injury, no rākṣasa should ever harm a king. O one who lives off men! We have not committed the least bit of injury.

जब तक कोई चोट न पहुँचे, किसी भी राक्षस को राजा को हानि नहीं पहुँचानी चाहिए। हे मनुष्य पर आश्रित रहने वाले! हमने तनिक भी चोट नहीं पहुंचाई है.

द्रोग्धव्यं न च मित्रेषु न विश्वस्तेषु कर्हिचित् येषां चान्नानि भुञ्जीत यत्र च स्यात्प्रतिश्रयः

One should never injure friends and those who are trustful, those whose food has been partaken of and those who have provided shelter.

मित्रों, विश्वासपात्रों, जिनका भोजन ग्रहण किया हो तथा आश्रय देने वालों को कभी कष्ट नहीं पहुँचाना चाहिए।

स त्वं प्रतिश्रयेऽस्माकं पूज्यमानः सुखोषितः भुक्त्वा चान्नानि दुष्प्रज्ञ कथमस्माञ्जिहीर्षसि

You found shelter with us. We showed you honour and you lived happily. O one who is not wise! Having partaken of our food, how can you abduct us?

तुम्हें हमारे यहाँ आश्रय मिला। हमने तुम्हें सम्मान दिया और तुम सुख से रहे। हे जो बुद्धिमान नहीं है! हमारा भोजन खाकर आप हमारा अपहरण कैसे कर सकते हैं?

एवमेव वृथाचारो वृथावृद्धो वृथामतिः वृथामरणमर्हस्त्वं वृथाद्य न भविष्यसि

Since your conduct is fruitless, your age is fruitless and your intelligence is fruitless, you deserve a fruitless death—and these words will not be fruitless today.

चूँकि तुम्हारा आचरण निष्फल है, तुम्हारी आयु निष्फल है और तुम्हारी बुद्धि निष्फल है, तुम निष्फल मृत्यु के पात्र हो—और ये शब्द आज निष्फल नहीं होंगे।

If you are truly evil-minded and devoid of all dharma, then return our weapons and win Draupadī after vanquishing us in battle.

यदि तुम वास्तव में दुष्टचित्त हो और सभी धर्मों से रहित हो, तो हमारे हथियार लौटा दो और युद्ध में हमें परास्त करके द्रौपदी को जीत लो।

अथ चेत्त्वमविज्ञाय इदं कर्म करिष्यसि अधर्मं चाप्यकीर्तिं च लोके प्राप्स्यसि केवलम्

But if you are driven by ignorance in your mind and persist in performing this act, you will follow that which is not dharma and will only obtain ill fame in this world.

लेकिन यदि आपके मन में अज्ञान है और आप इस कार्य को करने में लगे रहते हैं, तो आप उस कार्य का पालन करेंगे जो धर्म नहीं है और इस संसार में केवल अपयश प्राप्त करेंगे।

O rākṣasa! You have today laid your hands on this human woman. It is as if you have stirred up a vessel and drunk poison from it."

हे राक्षस! तुमने आज इस मानव स्त्री पर हाथ डाला है। यह ऐसा है मानो तुमने किसी बर्तन को हिलाकर उसमें से जहर पी लिया हो।”

ततो युधिष्ठिरस्तस्य भारिकः समपद्यत स तु भाराभिभूतात्मा न तथा शीघ्रगोऽभवत्

Then Yudhiṣṭhira bore down heavily on him and oppressed by this weight, he could not travel very fast.

तब युधिष्ठिर ने उस पर भारी बोझ डाला और इस भार से पीड़ित होकर वह बहुत तेजी से यात्रा नहीं कर सका।

अथाब्रवीद्द्रौपदीं च नकुलं च युधिष्ठिरः मा भैष्ट राक्षसान्मूढाद्गतिरस्य मया हृता

Yudhiṣṭhira told Nākula and Draupadī, "Do not be frightened of this stupid rākṣasa. I have robbed him of his speed.

Pāvana's mighty-armed son cannot be far away. He will arrive in an instant and the rākṣasa will have no future."

पवन का महाबाहु पुत्र दूर नहीं रह सकता। वह एक पल में आ जाएगा और राक्षस का कोई भविष्य नहीं होगा।"

सहदेवस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसं मूढचेतसम् उवाच वचनं राजन्कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्

O king! On seeing that the rākṣasa was deluded of his intelligence, Sahadeva spoke to Kuntī's son, Yudhiṣṭhira.

हे राजा! यह देखकर कि राक्षस अपनी बुद्धि से भ्रमित हो गया है, सहदेव ने कुंती के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर से बात की।

राजन्किं नाम तत्कृत्यं क्षत्रियस्यास्त्यतोऽधिकम् यद्युद्धेऽभिमुखः प्राणांस्त्यजेच्छत्रूञ्जयेत वा

"O king! Nothing brings greater merit to a kṣatriya than to fall in the field of battle and give up his life, or triumph over an enemy.

"हे राजन! एक क्षत्रिय के लिए युद्ध के मैदान में गिरकर अपने प्राण त्यागने, या किसी शत्रु पर विजय पाने से बढ़कर कोई पुण्य नहीं है।

एष चास्मान्वयं चैनं युध्यमानाः परंतप सूदयेम महाबाहो देशकालो ह्ययं नृप

O scorcher of enemies! Let us fight him in the field of battle. Either he will kill us, or we will kill him. O mighty-armed one! O king! The time and the place are right.

हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! आइए हम युद्ध के मैदान में उससे लड़ें। या तो वह हमें मार डालेगा, या हम उसे मार डालेंगे। हे महाबाहु! हे राजा! समय और स्थान सही है.

क्षत्रधर्मस्य संप्राप्तः कालः सत्यपराक्रम जयन्तः पात्यमाना वा प्राप्तुमर्हाम सद्गतिम्

O one for whom valour is truth! The time has come to show the dharma of kṣatriya-s. Whether we triumph or whether we are slain, we will attain the supreme objective.

हे जिसके लिए वीरता ही सत्य है! क्षत्रियों का धर्म दिखाने का समय आ गया है। चाहे हम जीतें या चाहे मारे जाएँ, हम सर्वोच्च उद्देश्य प्राप्त करेंगे।

राक्षसे जीवमानेऽद्य रविरस्तमियाद्यदि नाहं ब्रूयां पुनर्जातु क्षत्रियोऽस्मीति भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! If the rākṣasa is still alive when the sun sets, I will no longer be able to say that I am a kṣatriya.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! यदि सूर्य अस्त होने पर भी राक्षस जीवित रहे, तो मैं यह नहीं कह पाऊंगा कि मैं क्षत्रिय हूं।

भो भो राक्षस तिष्ठस्व सहदेवोऽस्मि पाण्डवः हत्वा वा मां नयस्वैनान्हतो वाद्येह स्वप्स्यसि

O rākṣasa! Stop! I am Pāṇḍava Sahadeva. Either kill me and take them today, or fall senseless."

हे राक्षस! रुकना! मैं पांडव सहदेव हूं। या तो आज मुझे मार कर ले जाओ, या बेहोश हो जाओ।”

तथैव तस्मिन्ब्रुवति भीमसेनो यदृच्छया प्रादृश्यत महाबाहुः सवज्र इव वासवः

While he was speaking thus, Bhīmasena appeared by chance. The mighty-armed one looked like Vāsava with his vajra.

जब वे इस प्रकार बोल रहे थे, संयोगवश भीमसेन प्रकट हो गये। वह महाबाहु अपने वज्र से वासव जैसा दिखता था।

सोऽपश्यद्भ्रातरौ तत्र द्रौपदीं च यशस्विनीम् क्षितिस्थं सहदेवं च क्षिपन्तं राक्षसं तदा

He saw his two brothers and the famous Draupadī, and Sahadeva on the ground, challenging the rākṣasa.

"I had got to know about you earlier, when I saw you scrutinize our weapons. But though I did not have my trust in you, I did not kill you then. You were in the form of a brāhmaṇa and you had not uttered any unpleasant words towards us.

प्रियेषु चरमाणं त्वां न चैवाप्रियकारिणम् अतिथिं ब्रह्मरूपं च कथं हन्यामनागसम् राक्षसं मन्यमानोऽपि यो हन्यान्नरकं व्रजेत्

You did what brought us pleasure and you did nothing that brought us displeasure. You were in the form of an innocent brāhmaṇa who was a guest. Anyone who kills such a person, even if he knows him to be a rākṣasa, goes to hell.

आपने वह किया जिससे हमें खुशी मिली और आपने ऐसा कुछ नहीं किया जिससे हमें नाराजगी हुई। आप एक निष्पाप ब्राह्मण के रूप में अतिथि थे। जो कोई ऐसे व्यक्ति को मारता है, भले ही वह जानता हो कि वह राक्षस है, वह नरक में जाता है।

That apart, the time for your killing was not ripe. That time is ripe now, since your inclination is of this nature. Extraordinary destiny has made you abduct Kṛṣṇā.

यं चासि प्रस्थितो देशं मनः पूर्वं गतं च ते न तं गन्तासि गन्तासि मार्गं बकहिडिम्बयोः

You will not be able to reach the region you have left for and where your mind has already gone. You will not be able to reach and you will traverse the path travelled by Baka and Hiḍimbā."

The rākṣasa was driven by destiny. Having been thus addressed by Bhīmā, he was frightened and threw them all down.

राक्षस नियति से प्रेरित था। भीम द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर वह भयभीत हो गया और उसने उन सभी को नीचे गिरा दिया।

अब्रवीच्च पुनर्भीमं रोषात्प्रस्फुरिताधरः न मे मूढा दिशः पाप त्वदर्थं मे विलम्बनम्

Then he approached, so as to fight. His lips trembling in anger, he told Bhīmā, "O deluded one! I did not lose my directions because I was deluded.

फिर वह लड़ने के लिये निकट आया। क्रोध से कांपते हुए उसके होंठ उसने भीम से कहा, "हे भ्रमित! मैंने अपनी दिशाएं इसलिए नहीं खोईं क्योंकि मैं भ्रमित था।

श्रुता मे राक्षसा ये ये त्वया विनिहता रणे तेषामद्य करिष्यामि तवास्रेणोदकक्रियाम्

I was waiting for your sake. I have heard about the rākṣasa-s whom you killed in battle. With your blood, I will offer funeral oblations to them today."

मैं तो तुम्हारी खातिर ही इंतज़ार कर रहा था. मैंने उन राक्षसों के बारे में सुना है जिन्हें आपने युद्ध में मार डाला था। मैं तुम्हारे खून से आज उन्हें अंतिम संस्कार दूँगा।”

एवमुक्तस्ततो भीमः सृक्किणी परिसंलिहन् स्मयमान इव क्रोधात्साक्षात्कालान्तकोपमः बाहुसंरम्भमेवेच्छन्नभिदुद्राव राक्षसम्

Having been thus addressed, Bhīmā smilingly licked the corners of his mouth. He was bursting with rage, like time and death personified. With great force, he dashed at the rākṣasa, to engage him in a bout of wrestling.

इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर भीम ने मुस्कुराते हुए अपने मुँह के कोनों को चाटा। वह क्रोध से फूट रहा था, जैसे समय और मृत्यु साक्षात रूप में सामने आ गए हों। वह बड़ी ताकत से राक्षस पर टूट पड़ा, ताकि उसे कुश्ती में उलझा सके।

राक्षसोऽपि तदा भीमं युद्धार्थिनमवस्थितम् अभिदुद्राव संरब्धो बलो वज्रधरं यथा

On seeing that Bhīmā stood ready to fight, the rākṣasa also forcefully dashed towards him, like Bali towards the wielder of the vajra.

यह देखकर कि भीम युद्ध के लिए तैयार खड़ा है, राक्षस भी बलपूर्वक उसकी ओर झपटा, जैसे बाली वज्रधारी की ओर।

वर्तमाने तदा ताभ्यां बाहुयुद्धे सुदारुणे माद्रीपुत्रावभिक्रुद्धावुभावप्यभ्यधावताम्

When they were about to engage in that terrible battle with arms, Mādrī's two sons were also extremely angered and rushed forward.

जब वे अस्त्र-शस्त्र लेकर उस भयानक युद्ध में उतरने ही वाले थे तो माद्री के दोनों पुत्र भी अत्यंत क्रोधित होकर आगे बढ़े।
