वैशंपायन उवाच ततः प्रयातः कौशिक्याः पाण्डवो जनमेजय आनुपूर्व्येण सर्वाणि जगामायतनान्युत

Vaiśampāyana said: O Janamejaya! Then the Pāṇḍava left Kauśikī and one after another, went to all the other sacred places.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे जनमेजय! तब पांडवों ने कौशिकी को छोड़ दिया और एक के बाद एक अन्य सभी पवित्र स्थानों पर चले गए।

स सागरं समासाद्य गङ्गायाः संगमे नृप नदीशतानां पञ्चानां मध्ये चक्रे समाप्लवम्

O king! He went to the ocean, to the confluence of the Gāṅga. He performed his ablutions in the middle of the five hundred rivers.

हे राजा! वह सागर में, गंगा के संगम पर गया। उन्होंने पांच सौ नदियों के बीच में स्नान किया।

ततः समुद्रतीरेण जगाम वसुधाधिपः भ्रातृभिः सहितो वीरः कलिङ्गान्प्रति भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Then, together with his brothers, the brave lord of the earth travelled along the shores of the ocean towards Kāliṅga.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! फिर, अपने भाइयों के साथ, पृथ्वी के बहादुर स्वामी ने समुद्र के किनारे से कलिंग की ओर यात्रा की।

लोमश उवाच एते कलिङ्गाः कौन्तेय यत्र वैतरणी नदी यत्रायजत धर्मोऽपि देवाञ्शरणमेत्य वै

Lomaśa said: "O Kaunteya! This is Kāliṅga, where the river Vaitaraṇī flows. Here, under the refuge of the gods, Dharma performed sacrifices.

लोमश ने कहा: "हे कौन्तेय! यह कलिंग है, जहां वैतरणी नदी बहती है। यहां, देवताओं की शरण में, धर्म ने यज्ञ किया था।

ऋषिभिः समुपायुक्तं यज्ञियं गिरिशोभितम् उत्तरं तीरमेतद्धि सततं द्विजसेवितम्

This is the northern bank, always frequented by brāhmana-s and inhabited by riṣi-s. It is a sacrificial ground that has been made beautiful by a mountain.

यह उत्तरी तट है, जहां हमेशा ब्राह्मण आते रहते हैं और ऋषि रहते हैं। यह एक यज्ञभूमि है जिसे एक पर्वत ने सुन्दर बना दिया है।

समेन देवयानेन पथा स्वर्गमुपेयुषः अत्र वै ऋषयोऽन्येऽपि पुरा क्रतुभिरीजिरे

In ancient times, other riṣi-s have also performed sacrifices here and gone to heaven along the route followed by the gods.

प्राचीन काल में, अन्य ऋषियों ने भी यहां यज्ञ किया था और देवताओं द्वारा अपनाए गए मार्ग से स्वर्ग गए थे।

अत्रैव रुद्रो राजेन्द्र पशुमादत्तवान्मखे रुद्रः पशुं मानवेन्द्र भागोऽयमिति चाब्रवीत्

O Indra among kings! This is the place where Rudra grasped the sacrificial animal. O Indra among men! Rudra grasped the animal and said, "This is my share."

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यह वह स्थान है जहां रुद्र ने बलि के पशु को पकड़ा था। हे मनुष्यों में इंद्र! रुद्र ने जानवर को पकड़ लिया और कहा, "यह मेरा हिस्सा है।"

हृते पशौ तदा देवास्तमूचुर्भरतर्षभ मा परस्वमभिद्रोग्धा मा धर्मान्सकलान्नशीः

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! When the animal was stolen, the gods told him, "Do not covet the property of others. Do not destroy all dharma."

हे भरत वंश में बैल! जब जानवर चोरी हो गया, तो देवताओं ने उससे कहा, "दूसरों की संपत्ति का लालच मत करो। सभी धर्मों को नष्ट मत करो।"

ततः कल्याणरूपाभिर्वाग्भिस्ते रुद्रमस्तुवन् इष्ट्या चैनं तर्पयित्वा मानयां चक्रिरे तदा

Later, they praised Rudra with sweet words. They satisfied him with a sacrifice and showed him honour.

बाद में उन्होंने मधुर वचनों से रूद्र की स्तुति की। उन्होंने उसे बलिदान देकर संतुष्ट किया और उसका सम्मान किया।

ततः स पशुमुत्सृज्य देवयानेन जग्मिवान् अत्रानुवंशो रुद्रस्य तं निबोध युधिष्ठिर

Then, discarding the animal, he followed the path traversed by the gods. O Yudhiṣṭhira! Listen to what is said about Rudra.

फिर उसने पशु को त्यागकर देवताओं द्वारा बताये गये मार्ग का अनुसरण किया। हे युधिष्ठिर! रूद्र के विषय में क्या कहा गया है वह सुनो।

अयातयामं सर्वेभ्यो भागेभ्यो भागमुत्तमम् देवाः संकल्पयामासुर्भयाद्रुद्रस्य शाश्वतम्

As a result of their fear of Rudra, the gods resolved that the supreme share of everything that was not stale would always be set apart for him.

रुद्र के डर के परिणामस्वरूप, देवताओं ने निर्णय लिया कि जो कुछ भी बासी नहीं होगा उसका सर्वोच्च हिस्सा हमेशा उसके लिए अलग रखा जाएगा।

इमां गाथामत्र गायन्नपः स्पृशति यो नरः देवयानस्तस्य पन्थाश्चक्षुश्चैव प्रकाशते

A man who touches the water here, while reciting this verse, has the route of the gods as his path and sees it with his eyes."

जो मनुष्य इस श्लोक का पाठ करते हुए यहां जल को छूता है, वह देवताओं के मार्ग को अपना मार्ग मानता है और उसे अपनी आंखों से देखता है।''

वैशंपायन उवाच ततो वैतरणीं सर्वे पाण्डवा द्रौपदी तथा अवतीर्य महाभागा तर्पयां चक्रिरे पितॄन्

Vaiśampāyana said: Then all the immensely fortunate Pāṇḍava-s, together with Draupadī, descended into Vaitaraṇī and offered oblations to the ancestors.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: तब द्रौपदी सहित सभी अत्यंत भाग्यशाली पांडव वैतरणी में उतरे और पितरों को तर्पण दिया।

युधिष्ठिर उवाच उपस्पृश्यैव भगवन्नस्यां नद्यां तपोधन मानुषादस्मि विषयादपेतः पश्य लोमश

Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O Lomaśa! O illustrious one! O one rich in austerities! Behold. As soon as I have bathed in this river, I have gone beyond what is human.

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: "हे लोमश! हे महामहिम! हे तपस्वी! देखो। जैसे ही मैंने इस नदी में स्नान किया है, मैं मानव से परे चला गया हूं।

सर्वाँल्लोकान्प्रपश्यामि प्रसादात्तव सुव्रत वैखानसानां जपतामेष शब्दो महात्मनाम्

O follower of good vows! Through your grace, I can see all the worlds. This is the sound of the great-souled hermits, as they recite their prayers."

हे शुभ व्रतों के पालनकर्ता! आपकी कृपा से मैं समस्त लोकों को देख सकता हूँ। यह महान आत्मा वाले सन्यासियों की ध्वनि है, जब वे अपनी प्रार्थनाएँ पढ़ते हैं।"

लोमश उवाच त्रिशतं वै सहस्राणि योजनानां युधिष्ठिर यत्र ध्वनिं शृणोष्येनं तूष्णीमास्स्व विशां पते

Lomaśa replied: "O Yudhiṣṭhira! O lord of the earth! Keep quiet. The sound that you hear is at a distance of three hundred thousand yojanā-s.

लोमश ने उत्तर दिया: "हे युधिष्ठिर! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! चुप रहो। जो ध्वनि तुम सुन रहे हो वह तीन लाख योजन की दूरी पर है।

एतत्स्वयंभुवो राजन्वनं रम्यं प्रकाशते यत्रायजत कौन्तेय विश्वकर्मा प्रतापवान्

O king! The beautiful forest that manifests itself here belongs to the one who created himself. O Kaunteya! The powerful Viśvakarma performed a sacrifice here.

हे राजा! यहां जो सुंदर जंगल प्रकट होता है, वह उसी का है जिसने खुद को बनाया है। हे कौन्तेय! शक्तिशाली विश्वकर्मा ने यहां एक यज्ञ किया था।

यस्मिन्यज्ञे हि भूर्दत्ता कश्यपाय महात्मने सपर्वतवनोद्देशा दक्षिणा वै स्वयंभुवा

At that sacrifice, the one who created himself gave the earth, with all its mountains, forests and regions, as a stipend to the great-souled Kāśyapa.

उस बलिदान में, जिसने खुद को बनाया, उसने पृथ्वी को उसके सभी पहाड़ों, जंगलों और क्षेत्रों के साथ, महान आत्मा वाले कश्यप को वजीफा के रूप में दे दिया।

अवासीदच्च कौन्तेय दत्तमात्रा मही तदा उवाच चापि कुपिता लोकेश्वरमिदं प्रभुम्

O Kaunteya! As soon as she had been given away, the earth became dejected. In anger, she spoke to the illustrious lord of the worlds.

हे कौन्तेय! जैसे ही उसे विदा किया गया, पृथ्वी उदास हो गई। क्रोध में आकर उसने लोकों के यशस्वी स्वामी से बात की।

न मां मर्त्याय भगवन्कस्मैचिद्दातुमर्हसि प्रदानं मोघमेतत्ते यास्याम्येषा रसातलम्

"O illustrious one! You should not have given me away to a mere mortal. Your giving me away will be unsuccessful. I will go to rasātala."

"हे महान! आपको मुझे एक साधारण मनुष्य को नहीं देना चाहिए था। आपका मुझे देना असफल होगा। मैं रसातल जाऊंगा।"

विषीदन्तीं तु तां दृष्ट्वा कश्यपो भगवानृषिः प्रसादयां बभूवाथ ततो भूमिं विशां पते

O lord of the earth! On seeing that the earth was dejected, the illustrious riṣi Kāśyapa pacified her.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यह देखकर कि पृथ्वी उदास है, महामहिम ऋषि कश्यप ने उसे शांत किया।

ततः प्रसन्ना पृथिवी तपसा तस्य पाण्डव पुनरुन्मज्ज्य सलिलाद्वेदीरूपा स्थिता बभौ

O Pāṇḍava! She was satisfied by his austerities and once again emerged from the water, establishing herself as an altar.

हे पाण्डव! वह उनकी तपस्या से संतुष्ट हुईं और एक बार फिर पानी से बाहर आईं और खुद को एक वेदी के रूप में स्थापित किया।

सैषा प्रकाशते राजन्वेदी संस्थानलक्षणा आरुह्यात्र महाराज वीर्यवान्वै भविष्यसि

O king! You can see it there, with all the signs of an altar. O great king! Ascend it, and you will be extremely valorous.

हे राजा! आप इसे वहां वेदी के सभी चिन्हों के साथ देख सकते हैं। हे महान राजा! इस पर चढ़ो, और तुम अत्यंत वीर हो जाओगे।

अहं च ते स्वस्त्ययनं प्रयोक्ष्ये; यथा त्वमेनामधिरोक्ष्यसेऽद्य स्पृष्टा हि मर्त्येन ततः समुद्र;मेषा वेदी प्रविशत्याजमीढ

As you ascend it today, I will myself pronounce the benediction. O Ājamīḍha! As soon as it is touched by a mortal, this altar immerses itself in the ocean again.

जैसे ही आप आज इस पर आरोहण करेंगे, मैं स्वयं आशीर्वाद का उच्चारण करूंगा। हे अजमीढ! जैसे ही इसे किसी नश्वर व्यक्ति द्वारा छुआ जाता है, यह वेदी फिर से समुद्र में डूब जाती है।

अग्निर्मित्रो योनिरापोऽथ देव्यो; विष्णो रेतस्त्वममृतस्य नाभिः एवं ब्रुवन्पाण्डव सत्यवाक्यं; वेदीमिमां त्वं तरसाधिरोह

"Agni, Mitrā, the womb, the water, the goddess, Viṣṇu's seed, the navel of amṛtā." O Pāṇḍava! Having recited these truthful words, swiftly climb up onto the altar."

"अग्नि, मित्रा, गर्भ, जल, देवी, विष्णु का बीज, अमृत की नाभि।" हे पाण्डव! इन सत्य शब्दों का उच्चारण करके, तेजी से वेदी पर चढ़ो।"

वैशंपायन उवाच ततः कृतस्वस्त्ययनो महात्मा; युधिष्ठिरः सागरगामगच्छत् कृत्वा च तच्छासनमस्य सर्वं; महेन्द्रमासाद्य निशामुवास

Vaiśampāyana said: When the benediction had been pronounced on him, the great-souled Yudhiṣṭhira went into the ocean. When he had done all that he had been asked, he went to Māhendra and spent the night there.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब महाबली युधिष्ठिर को आशीर्वाद दिया गया तो वे समुद्र में चले गये। जब उसने वह सब कर लिया जो उससे कहा गया था, तो वह महेंद्र के पास गया और वहीं रात बिताई।
