अर्जुन उवाच निवर्तमानेन मया महद्दृष्टं ततोऽपरम् पुरं कामचरं दिव्यं पावकार्कसमप्रभम्

Arjuna said: "While I was returning, I saw another great city. It was divine, as resplendent as the fire and the sun, and it could roam as it wished.

अर्जुन ने कहा: "जब मैं लौट रहा था, मैंने एक और महान शहर देखा। वह दिव्य था, अग्नि और सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान था, और वह इच्छानुसार घूम सकता था।"

द्रुमै रत्नमयैश्चैत्रैर्भास्वरैश्च पतत्रिभिः पौलोमैः कालकेयैश्च नित्यहृष्टैरधिष्ठितम्

It had trees that were covered with jewels, with colourful birds that had sweet voices. It was inhabited by Poulamas and Kālakeya-s who were always happy.

इसमें रत्नों से लदे पेड़ थे, रंग-बिरंगे पक्षी थे जिनकी आवाज मधुर थी। इसमें पौलमास और कालकेय रहते थे जो हमेशा खुश रहते थे।

गोपुराट्टालकोपेतं चतुर्द्वारं दुरासदम् सर्वरत्नमयं दिव्यमद्भुतोपमदर्शनम् द्रुमैः पुष्पफलोपेतैर्दिव्यरत्नमयैर्वृतम्

It was impregnable, with turrets, entrances and four gates. It was covered with jewels everywhere and was celestial and wonderful to see. There were trees with flowers and fruit, covered everywhere with divine gems.

यह अभेद्य था, इसमें बुर्ज, प्रवेश द्वार और चार द्वार थे। वह सर्वत्र रत्नों से आच्छादित था और देखने में दिव्य एवं अद्भुत था। वहाँ पुष्पों और फलों से युक्त, दिव्य रत्नों से सर्वत्र आच्छादित वृक्ष थे।

तथा पतत्रिभिर्दिव्यैरुपेतं सुमनोहरैः असुरैर्नित्यमुदितैः शूलर्ष्टिमुसलायुधैः चापमुद्गरहस्तैश्च स्रग्विभिः सर्वतो वृतम्

There were extremely beautiful celestial birds. It was filled everywhere with āsura-s who were always happy, armed with weapons like spears, swords, clubs, bows and maces in their hands.

वहाँ अत्यंत सुन्दर दिव्य पक्षी थे। यह हर जगह असुरों से भरा हुआ था जो हमेशा खुश रहते थे, अपने हाथों में भाले, तलवार, गदा, धनुष और गदा जैसे हथियारों से लैस थे।

तदहं प्रेक्ष्य दैत्यानां पुरमद्भुतदर्शनम् अपृच्छं मातलिं राजन्किमिदं दृश्यतेति वै

O king! On seeing this extraordinary city of the daitya-s, I asked Mātali, "What is this that I see here?"

हे राजा! दैत्यों के इस असाधारण नगर को देखकर मैंने मातलि से पूछा, "यह मैं क्या देख रहा हूँ?"

मातलिरुवाच पुलोमा नाम दैतेयी कालका च महासुरी दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं ते चेरतुः परमं तपः तपसोऽन्ते ततस्ताभ्यां स्वयम्भूरददाद्वरम्

Mātali replied: "There was once a daitya lady named Pulomā and another great āsura lady named Kālakā. They observed supreme austerities for one thousand celestial years. When they had completed the austerities, the one who created himself granted them a boon.

मातलि ने उत्तर दिया: "एक बार पुलोमा नाम की एक दैत्य महिला और कालका नाम की एक और महान असुर महिला थी। उन्होंने एक हजार दिव्य वर्षों तक सर्वोच्च तपस्या की। जब उन्होंने तपस्या पूरी कर ली, तो स्वयं को बनाने वाले ने उन्हें वरदान दिया।

अगृह्णीतां वरं ते तु सुतानामल्पदुःखताम् अवध्यतां च राजेन्द्र सुरराक्षसपन्नगैः

O Indra among kings! They chose the boon that their sons should not suffer muc and should be incapable of being killed by the gods, the rākṣasa-s and the serpents.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! उन्होंने यह वरदान चुना कि उनके पुत्रों को कष्ट न हो और वे देवताओं, राक्षसों तथा नागों द्वारा मारे जाने में असमर्थ हों।

रमणीयं पुरं चेदं खचरं सुकृतप्रभम् सर्वरत्नैः समुदितं दुर्धर्षममरैरपि सयक्षगन्धर्वगणैः पन्नगासुरराक्षसैः

This beautiful city that roams in the sky is the result of those good deeds. It is full of jewels everywhere and is incapable of being conquered even by the gods, the yakṣa-s, the masses of gāndharva-s, the serpents, the āsura-s and the rākṣasa-s.

आकाश में विचरण करने वाला यह सुंदर नगर उन्हीं अच्छे कर्मों का फल है। यह हर जगह रत्नों से भरा हुआ है और देवताओं, यक्षों, गंधर्वों, नागों, असुरों और राक्षसों के समूह द्वारा भी इसे जीतने में असमर्थ है।

सर्वकामगुणोपेतं वीतशोकमनामयम् ब्रह्मणा भरतश्रेष्ठ कालकेयकृते कृतम्

It contains all the objects of desire and qualities and is devoid of sorrow and disease. O best of the Bhārata lineage! This was created for the Kālakeya-s by Brahmā.

इसमें सभी कामनाओं और गुणों से युक्त तथा दुःख और रोग से रहित है। हे भरत वंश के सर्वश्रेष्ठ! यह ब्रह्मा द्वारा कालकेय के लिए बनाया गया था।

तदेतत्खचरं दिव्यं चरत्यमरवर्जितम् पौलोमाध्युषितं वीर कालकेयैश्च दानवैः

This is the divine city that is roaming around in the sky, avoided by the immortals. O brave one! It is inhabited by the Poulama and Kālakeya dānava-s.

यह वह दिव्य नगर है जो अमरों से बचा हुआ आकाश में विचरण कर रहा है। हे वीर! यह पौलमा और कालकेय दानवों द्वारा बसा हुआ है।

हिरण्यपुरमित्येतत्ख्यायते नगरं महत् रक्षितं कालकेयैश्च पौलोमैश्च महासुरैः

This great city is known by the name of Hiraṇyapura. It is protected by the great Kālakeya and Poulama āsura-s.

यह महान नगर हिरण्यपुर के नाम से जाना जाता है। यह महान कालकेय और पौलम असुर-एस द्वारा संरक्षित है।

त एते मुदिता नित्यमवध्याः सर्वदैवतैः निवसन्त्यत्र राजेन्द्र गतोद्वेगा निरुत्सुकाः मानुषो मृत्युरेतेषां निर्दिष्टो ब्रह्मणा पुरा

They are always happy there and cannot be killed by all the gods. O Indra among kings! They always live here happily, devoid of anxiety and with nothing left to ask for. It was earlier destined by Brahmā that they would die at the hands of a human."

वे वहाँ सदैव प्रसन्न रहते हैं और सभी देवताओं द्वारा उन्हें नहीं मारा जा सकता। हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! वे यहाँ हमेशा खुशी से रहते हैं, चिंता से रहित होते हैं और उनके पास माँगने के लिए कुछ भी नहीं बचता है। यह पहले ब्रह्मा द्वारा निर्धारित किया गया था कि वे एक मानव के हाथों मरेंगे।"

अर्जुन उवाच सुरासुरैरवध्यांस्तानहं ज्ञात्वा ततः प्रभो अब्रुवं मातलिं हृष्टो याह्येतत्पुरमञ्जसा

Arjuna said: "O lord! Having learnt that they could not be slain by the gods and the āsura-s, I happily told Mātali, "Go swiftly to that city.

अर्जुन ने कहा: "हे भगवान! यह जानकर कि वे देवताओं और असुरों द्वारा नहीं मारे जा सकते, मैंने खुशी से मातलि से कहा, "तुरंत उस शहर में जाओ।

त्रिदशेशद्विषो यावत्क्षयमस्त्रैर्नयाम्यहम् न कथंचिद्धि मे पापा न वध्या ये सुरद्विषः

I will use my weapons to destroy those who hate the thirty gods. There are no evil haters of the gods who do not deserve to be slain by me."

मैं अपने हथियारों का उपयोग उन लोगों को नष्ट करने के लिए करूँगा जो तीस देवताओं से नफरत करते हैं। देवताओं का कोई भी दुष्ट शत्रु नहीं है जो मेरे द्वारा मारे जाने के योग्य न हो।"

उवाह मां ततः शीघ्रं हिरण्यपुरमन्तिकात् रथेन तेन दिव्येन हरियुक्तेन मातलिः

In that divine chariot, yoked to tawny horses, Mātali swiftly conveyed me to the city of Hiraṇyapura.

मटमैले घोड़ों से जुते हुए उस दिव्य रथ में मातलि ने मुझे शीघ्रता से हिरण्यपुर नगर में पहुँचाया।

ते मामालक्ष्य दैतेया विचित्राभरणाम्बराः समुत्पेतुर्महावेगा रथानास्थाय दंशिताः

On seeing me, Diti's sons, adorned in colourful garments and ornaments, mounted their chariots and hastened at great speed.

मुझे देखकर रंग-बिरंगे वस्त्रों और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित दिति के पुत्र अपने-अपने रथों पर चढ़कर बड़ी तेजी से दौड़ने लगे।

ततो नालीकनाराचैर्भल्लशक्त्यृष्टितोमरैः अभ्यघ्नन्दानवेन्द्रा मां क्रुद्धास्तीव्रपराक्रमाः

The chiefs of the dānava-s, terrible in valour, angrily attacked me with darts, iron arrows, missiles, spears, cudgels and clubs.

वीरता में भयानक दानवों के सरदारों ने क्रोधपूर्वक मुझ पर तीरों, लोहे के तीरों, मिसाइलों, भालों, कुदालों और लाठियों से हमला किया।

तदहं चास्त्रवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् शस्त्रवर्षं महद्राजन्विद्याबलमुपाश्रितः

I warded off this great shower of weapons. O king! Resorting to the strength of my knowledge, I unleashed a great shower of arrows.

मैंने हथियारों की इस महान वर्षा को रोक दिया। हे राजा! अपने ज्ञान के बल पर मैंने बाणों की भारी वर्षा की।

व्यामोहयं च तान्सर्वान्रथमार्गैश्चरन्रणे तेऽन्योन्यमभिसंमूढाः पातयन्ति स्म दानवाः

In that battle, I confounded all of them through the course of my chariot. Completely confounded, the dānava-s fell down on one another.

उस युद्ध में मैंने अपने रथ के मार्ग से उन सभी को पराजित कर दिया। पूरी तरह से भ्रमित होकर दानव एक-दूसरे पर गिर पड़े।

तेषामहं विमूढानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम् शिरांसि विशिखैर्दीप्तैर्व्यहरं शतसंघशः

They were so confounded that they rushed at each other. I sliced off their heads with hundreds of blazing arrows.

वे इतने भ्रमित थे कि वे एक-दूसरे पर झपट पड़े। मैंने सैकड़ों प्रज्वलित बाणों से उनके मस्तक काट डाले।

ते वध्यमाना दैतेयाः पुरमास्थाय तत्पुनः खमुत्पेतुः सनगरा मायामास्थाय दानवीम्

Thus slaughtered by me, the daitya-s resorted to their city again. Using the power of māyā that dānava-s possess, they rose up into the sky with their city.

इस प्रकार मेरे द्वारा मारे गये दैत्य पुनः अपने नगर में चले गये। दानवों के पास मौजूद माया की शक्ति का उपयोग करके, वे अपने शहर के साथ आकाश में उड़ गए।

ततोऽहं शरवर्षेण महता प्रत्यवारयम् मार्गमावृत्य दैत्यानां गतिं चैषामवारयम्

I restrained them with a great shower of arrows. I blocked the path of the daitya-s and restrained their movement.

मैंने बाणों की भारी वर्षा करके उन्हें रोक लिया। मैंने दैत्यों का मार्ग अवरुद्ध कर दिया और उनकी गति को रोक दिया।

तत्पुरं खचरं दिव्यं कामगं दिव्यवर्चसम् दैतेयैर्वरदानेन धार्यते स्म यथासुखम्

But the daitya-s were supported by their boon. With ease, that celestial city, divine in radiance and capable of going anywhere at will, remained suspended in the sky.

लेकिन दैत्यों को उनके वरदान का समर्थन प्राप्त था। सहजता से, वह दिव्य नगर, दिव्य चमक वाला और इच्छानुसार कहीं भी जाने में सक्षम, आकाश में लटका रहा।

अन्तर्भूमौ निपतितं पुनरूर्ध्वं प्रतिष्ठते पुनस्तिर्यक्प्रयात्याशु पुनरप्सु निमज्जति

It would suddenly plunge into the ground, then be established up in the sky again. It would swiftly adopt a diagonal movement and immerse itself in the waters.

यह अचानक जमीन में समा जाएगा, फिर आकाश में स्थापित हो जाएगा। यह तेजी से एक विकर्ण गति अपनाएगा और पानी में डूब जाएगा।

अमरावतिसंकाशं पुरं कामगमं तु तत् अहमस्त्रैर्बहुविधैः प्रत्यगृह्णं नराधिप

O lord of men! That giant city, capable of going anywhere at will, was like Amarāvatī. I attacked it with many types of weapons.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! इच्छानुसार कहीं भी जाने में सक्षम वह विशाल नगर अमरावती जैसा था। मैंने उस पर अनेक प्रकार के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से आक्रमण किया।

ततोऽहं शरजालेन दिव्यास्त्रमुदितेन च न्यगृह्णं सह दैतेयैस्तत्पुरं भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Then I subdued the daitya-s, together with the city, with a net of arrows invoked with divine weapons.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! तब मैंने दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से युक्त बाणों के जाल से नगर सहित दैत्यों को वश में कर लिया।

विक्षतं चायसैर्बाणैर्मत्प्रयुक्तैरजिह्मगैः महीमभ्यपतद्राजन्प्रभग्नं पुरमासुरम्

O king! It was wounded through the straight and iron arrows shot by me. The city of the āsura-s was destroyed and fell down on the ground.

हे राजा! मेरे द्वारा चलाये गये सीधे और लोहे के बाणों से यह घायल हो गया। असुरों का नगर नष्ट होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ा।

ते वध्यमाना मद्बाणैर्वज्रवेगैरयस्मयैः पर्यभ्रमन्त वै राजन्नसुराः कालचोदिताः

O king! Pierced by my iron arrows, as swift as the vajra, and driven by destiny, the āsura-s roamed around.

हे राजा! मेरे वज्र के समान वेगशाली लोहे के बाणों से घायल होकर और नियति के वश में होकर असुर चारों ओर घूमते रहते थे।

ततो मातलिरप्याशु पुरस्तान्निपतन्निव महीमवातरत्क्षिप्रं रथेनादित्यवर्चसा

Mātali swiftly descended on the ground in that chariot, as radiant as the sun, as if taking a forward leap.

मातलि सूर्य के समान तेजस्वी उस रथ में सवार होकर तेजी से भूमि पर उतरे, मानो आगे की ओर छलांग लगा रहे हों।

ततो रथसहस्राणि षष्टिस्तेषाममर्षिणाम् युयुत्सूनां मया सार्धं पर्यवर्तन्त भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Wishing to fight with me, those indomitable ones surrounded me with sixty thousand chariots.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! उन अदम्य वीरों ने मुझसे युद्ध करने की इच्छा से साठ हजार रथों द्वारा मुझे घेर लिया।

तानहं निशितैर्बाणैर्व्यधमं गार्ध्रवाजितैः ते युद्धे संन्यवर्तन्त समुद्रस्य यथोर्मयः

But I destroyed them with sharp arrows that had feathers of vultures as plumes. Thus vanquished in battle, they retreated like the waves of the ocean.

परन्तु मैंने उन पैने बाणों से, जिनके पंखों के समान गिद्ध के पंख थे, उनको नष्ट कर दिया। इस प्रकार युद्ध में पराजित होकर वे समुद्र की लहरों की भाँति पीछे हट गये।

नेमे शक्या मानुषेण युद्धेनेति प्रचिन्त्य वै ततोऽहमानुपूर्व्येण सर्वाण्यस्त्राण्ययोजयम्

Thinking that no man was capable of defeating them in battle, I discharged all my other weapons, one after the other.

यह सोचकर कि उन्हें युद्ध में कोई भी पराजित नहीं कर सकता, मैंने एक-एक करके अपने सभी अस्त्र-शस्त्र त्याग दिये।

ततस्तानि सहस्राणि रथानां चित्रयोधिनाम् अस्त्राणि मम दिव्यानि प्रत्यघ्नञ्शनकैरिव

But slowly, my divine weapons, and the thousands of chariots of those skilled warriors, neutralized each other.

लेकिन धीरे-धीरे मेरे दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्रों और उन कुशल योद्धाओं के हजारों रथों ने एक-दूसरे को निष्क्रिय कर दिया।

रथमार्गान्विचित्रांस्ते विचरन्तो महारथाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त संग्रामे शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

The mahāratha-s roamed around, in different manoeuvres of their chariots. They could be seen in hundreds and thousands.

महारथी अपने रथों की भिन्न-भिन्न चालों में इधर-उधर घूमते रहते थे। उन्हें सैकड़ों और हजारों की संख्या में देखा जा सकता था।

विचित्रमुकुटापीडा विचित्रकवचध्वजाः विचित्राभरणाश्चैव नन्दयन्तीव मे मनः

They were adorned in colourful crowns and garlands for the head and dazzling armour and flags. With many beautiful ornaments, they delighted my mind.

वे सिर पर रंग-बिरंगे मुकुटों और मालाओं तथा चमकदार कवचों और झंडों से सुशोभित थे। अनेक सुन्दर आभूषणों से उन्होंने मेरे मन को प्रसन्न कर दिया।

अहं तु शरवर्षैस्तानस्त्रप्रमुदितै रणे नाशक्नुवं पीडयितुं ते तु मां पर्यपीडयन्

In that battle, with all my showers of arrows, I was not able to oppress them. But they oppressed me.

उस युद्ध में मैं अपने समस्त बाणों की वर्षा करके भी उन पर अत्याचार नहीं कर सका। परन्तु उन्होंने मुझ पर अत्याचार किया।

तैः पीड्यमानो बहुभिः कृतास्त्रैः कुशलैर्युधि व्यथितोऽस्मि महायुद्धे भयं चागान्महन्मम

Thus hard-pressed by many who were accomplished in weapons and were skilled warriors, I felt pain in that great battle. A great fear took hold of me.

उस महान युद्ध में बहुत से अस्त्र-विद्या में पारंगत और कुशल योद्धाओं द्वारा कठोर दबाव डाले जाने के कारण मुझे बहुत कष्ट हुआ। एक बड़े डर ने मुझ पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया।

ततोऽहं देवदेवाय रुद्राय प्रणतो रणे स्वस्ति भूतेभ्य इत्युक्त्वा महास्त्रं समयोजयम् यत्तद्रौद्रमिति ख्यातं सर्वामित्रविनाशनम्

In the battle, I bowed down to Rudra, god of the gods. Saying, "May there be welfare to all beings," I used the great weapon famous by the name of raudra, capable of destroying all enemies.

युद्ध में मैंने देवाधिदेव रूद्र को प्रणाम किया। "सभी प्राणियों का कल्याण हो" कहकर मैंने रौद्र नाम से प्रसिद्ध महान अस्त्र का प्रयोग किया, जो सभी शत्रुओं को नष्ट करने में सक्षम था।

ततोऽपश्यं त्रिशिरसं पुरुषं नवलोचनम् त्रिमुखं षड्भुजं दीप्तमर्कज्वलनमूर्धजम् लेलिहानैर्महानागैः कृतशीर्षममित्रहन्

I then saw a man with three heads, nine eyes, three faces and six arms, with hair blazing like the sun and the fire. O scorcher of enemies! There were giant serpents with flaming tongues on his head.

फिर मैंने एक आदमी को देखा जिसके तीन सिर, नौ आँखें, तीन चेहरे और छह भुजाएँ थीं, जिसके बाल सूरज और आग की तरह चमक रहे थे। हे शत्रुओं को भस्म करने वाले! उसके सिर पर जलती हुई जीभ वाले विशाल नाग थे।

विभीस्ततस्तदस्त्रं तु घोरं रौद्रं सनातनम् दृष्ट्वा गाण्डीवसंयोगमानीय भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! On beholding that terrible and eternal raudra weapon, I lost my fear and attached it to Gāṇḍīva.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! उस भयानक और शाश्वत रौद्र अस्त्र को देखकर मेरा भय दूर हो गया और मैंने उसे गाण्डीव पर धारण कर लिया।

नमस्कृत्वा त्रिनेत्राय शर्वायामिततेजसे मुक्तवान्दानवेन्द्राणां पराभावाय भारत

I bowed in obeisance to the three-eyed and infinitely energetic Śarva. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! I discharged it, to defeat the lords of the dānava-s.

मैंने तीन नेत्रों वाले और असीम ऊर्जावान सर्व को प्रणाम किया। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! दानवों के सरदारों को परास्त करने के लिए मैंने इसका निर्वहन किया।

मुक्तमात्रे ततस्तस्मिन्रूपाण्यासन्सहस्रशः मृगाणामथ सिंहानां व्याघ्राणां च विशां पते ऋक्षाणां महिषाणां च पन्नगानां तथा गवाम्

O lord of the earth! As soon as I discharged it, it assumed thousands of different forms everywhere—deer, lions, tigers, bears, buffaloes, serpents, cattle,

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! जैसे ही मैंने इसे छोड़ा, इसने हर जगह हजारों अलग-अलग रूप धारण कर लिए - हिरण, शेर, बाघ, भालू, भैंस, सांप, मवेशी,

गजानां सृमराणां च शरभाणां च सर्वशः ऋषभाणां वराहाणां मार्जाराणां तथैव च शालावृकाणां प्रेतानां भुरुण्डानां च सर्वशः

elephants, marsh-deer, śarabha-s, bulls, boars, cats, hyenas, ghosts, bhuruṇḍa-s,

हाथी, दलदल-हिरण, शरभ-एस, बैल, सूअर, बिल्लियाँ, लकड़बग्घे, भूत, भूरुंड-एस,

गृध्राणां गरुडानां च मकराणां तथैव च पिशाचानां सयक्षाणां तथैव च सुरद्विषाम्

vultures, gāruḍa-s, sharks, piśāca-s, yakṣa-s, haters of gods,

गिद्ध, गरुड़, शार्क, पिशाच, यक्ष, देवताओं से नफरत करने वाले,

गुह्यकानां च संग्रामे नैरृतानां तथैव च झषाणां गजवक्त्राणामुलूकानां तथैव च

guhyaka-s, nairṛta-s, large fish with mouths like elephants, owls, and ...

गुह्यका-एस, नैऋता-एस, हाथी, उल्लू जैसे मुंह वाली बड़ी मछली, और ...

मीनकूर्मसमूहानां नानाशस्त्रासिपाणिनाम् तथैव यातु धानानां गदामुद्गरधारिणाम्

masses of fish and tortoises, all brandishing many kinds of weapons and swords. There were yātudhāna-s, wielding clubs and maces.

मछलियों और कछुओं का झुंड, सभी तरह-तरह के हथियार और तलवारें लहरा रहे थे। वहां गदा और गदा चलाने वाले यातुधान थे।

एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्नानारूपधरैस्तथा सर्वमासीज्जगद्व्याप्तं तस्मिन्नस्त्रे विसर्जिते

There were many other beings in different forms. They filled up the universe when that weapon was discharged.

वहाँ विभिन्न रूपों में कई अन्य प्राणी भी थे। जब वह अस्त्र छोड़ा गया तो उन्होंने ब्रह्मांड को भर दिया।

त्रिशिरोभिश्चतुर्दंष्ट्रैश्चतुरास्यैश्चतुर्भुजैः अनेकरूपसंयुक्तैर्मांसमेदोवसाशिभिः अभीक्ष्णं वध्यमानास्ते दानवा ये समागताः

Those many different forms—with three heads, four tusks, four faces and four arms—devoured the flesh, fat and marrow of the dānava-s. They continuously killed the ones who had gathered there.

तीन सिर, चार दाँत, चार मुख और चार भुजाओं वाले उन अनेक भिन्न रूपों ने दानवों के मांस, चर्बी और मज्जा को निगल लिया। उन्होंने लगातार उन लोगों को मार डाला जो वहां एकत्र हुए थे।

अर्कज्वलनतेजोभिर्वज्राशनिसमप्रभैः अद्रिसारमयैश्चान्यैर्बाणैररिविदारणैः न्यहनं दानवान्सर्वान्मुहूर्तेनैव भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! In an instant, I also killed the dānava-s with arrows that were destructive of enemies, as hard as the vajra and as radiant as lightning, blazing like the sun and the fire.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! मैंने एक ही पल में शत्रुओं का विनाश करने वाले, वज्र के समान कठोर और बिजली के समान तेजस्वी, सूर्य और अग्नि के समान तेजस्वी बाणों से दानवों को भी मार डाला।

गाण्डीवास्त्रप्रणुन्नांस्तान्गतासून्नभसश्च्युतान् दृष्ट्वाहं प्राणमं भूयस्त्रिपुरघ्नाय वेधसे

On seeing them destroyed through weapons shot from Gāṇḍīva, deprived of life and hurled down from the sky, I once again bowed to the god who destroyed Tripurā.

गाण्डीव द्वारा छोड़े गए शस्त्रों द्वारा उन्हें नष्ट होते, जीवन से वंचित और आकाश से नीचे फेंकते हुए देखकर, मैंने एक बार फिर त्रिपुरा को नष्ट करने वाले भगवान को प्रणाम किया।

तथा रौद्रास्त्रनिष्पिष्टान्दिव्याभरणभूषितान् निशाम्य परमं हर्षमगमद्देवसारथिः

On seeing that they had been destroyed, with all their celestial ornaments, shattered by the raudra weapon, the charioteer of the gods was extremely delighted.

यह देखकर कि वे नष्ट हो गये हैं, उनके सारे दिव्य आभूषण रौद्र अस्त्र से छिन्न-भिन्न हो गये हैं, देवताओं के सारथी को अत्यधिक प्रसन्नता हुई।

तदसह्यं कृतं कर्म देवैरपि दुरासदम् दृष्ट्वा मां पूजयामास मातलिः शक्रसारथिः

On seeing that I had performed a task that was impossible even for the gods, Mātali, Śākra's charioteer, worshipped me.

यह देखकर कि मैंने वह कार्य कर दिखाया है जो देवताओं के लिए भी असंभव था, शक्र के सारथी मातलि ने मेरी पूजा की।

उवाच चेदं वचनं प्रीयमाणः कृताञ्जलिः सुरासुरैरसह्यं हि कर्म यत्साधितं त्वया न ह्येतत्संयुगे कर्तुमपि शक्तः सुरेश्वरः

He joined his hands in salutation and said in a happy voice, "The task that you have accomplished was impossible for the gods and the āsura-s. Even the lord of the gods could not have achieved this in battle.

उन्होंने हाथ जोड़कर प्रणाम किया और प्रसन्न स्वर में कहा, "आपने जो कार्य पूरा किया है वह देवताओं और असुरों के लिए असंभव था। यहां तक ​​कि देवताओं के स्वामी भी युद्ध में इसे हासिल नहीं कर सकते थे।"

सुरासुरैरवध्यं हि पुरमेतत्खगं महत् त्वया विमथितं वीर स्ववीर्यास्त्रतपोबलात्

This great city that roamed around in the sky could not have been destroyed by the gods and the āsura-s. O brave one! You have vanquished it through the strength of your own valour, weapons and austerities.

आकाश में विचरण करने वाली इस महान नगरी को देवताओं और असुरों द्वारा नष्ट नहीं किया जा सकता था। हे वीर! तुमने इसे अपने पराक्रम, शस्त्र और तपस्या के बल पर परास्त कर लिया है।

विध्वस्तेऽथ पुरे तस्मिन्दानवेषु हतेषु च विनदन्त्यः स्त्रियः सर्वा निष्पेतुर्नगराद्बहिः

When the city had been destroyed and the dānava-s killed, all the lamenting women emerged from the city.

जब नगर नष्ट हो गया और दानव मारे गए, तो सभी विलाप करती हुई स्त्रियाँ नगर से बाहर निकलीं।

प्रकीर्णकेश्यो व्यथिताः कुरर्य इव दुःखिताः पेतुः पुत्रान्पितॄन्भ्रातॄञ्शोचमाना महीतले

They were smitten by grief, their hair was dishevelled and they were miserable like ospreys. They threw themselves down on the ground, sorrowing over their sons, fathers and husbands.

वे दुःख से व्याकुल थे, उनके बाल बिखरे हुए थे और वे ओस्प्रे की तरह दुखी थे। वे अपने पुत्रों, पिताओं और पतियों के कारण दुःखी होकर भूमि पर गिर पड़ीं।

रुदन्त्यो दीनकण्ठ्यस्ता विनदन्त्यो हतेश्वराः उरांसि पाणिभिर्घ्नन्त्यः प्रस्रस्तस्रग्विभूषणाः

In miserable tones, they loudly grieved over their dead lords. They beat their breasts with their hands and the garlands and ornaments were thrown away.

दुखी स्वर में, उन्होंने जोर-जोर से अपने मृत स्वामियों के लिए शोक व्यक्त किया। उन्होंने अपने हाथों से अपनी छाती पीटी और मालाएँ तथा आभूषण फेंक दिये गये।

तच्छोकयुक्तमश्रीकं दुःखदैन्यसमाहतम् न बभौ दानवपुरं हतत्विट्कं हतेश्वरम्

The city of the dānava-s was overcome with sorrow, misery and distress. It had lost all its splendour and all its lords had been slain. It was no longer radiant.

दानवों का शहर दुख, कष्ट और संकट से उबर गया था। इसने अपना सारा वैभव खो दिया था और इसके सभी स्वामी मारे गए थे। यह अब दीप्तिमान नहीं था.

गन्धर्वनगराकारं हतनागमिव ह्रदम् शुष्कवृक्षमिवारण्यमदृश्यमभवत्पुरम्

Like a city of the gāndharva-s, like a pond deserted by elephants and like a forest that is full of dry trees, that city disappeared.

गन्धर्वों के नगर की भाँति, हाथियों से उजाड़े हुए तालाब की भाँति तथा सूखे वृक्षों से भरे जंगल की भाँति वह नगर लुप्त हो गया।

मां तु संहृष्टमनसं क्षिप्रं मातलिरानयत् देवराजस्य भवनं कृतकर्माणमाहवात्

With a happy mind, Mātali quickly took me from the field of battle to the abode of the king of the gods.

प्रसन्न मन से मातलि शीघ्र ही मुझे युद्ध क्षेत्र से देवताओं के राजा के निवास स्थान पर ले गये।

हिरण्यपुरमारुज्य निहत्य च महासुरान् निवातकवचांश्चैव ततोऽहं शक्रमागमम्

I had accomplished my task. I had destroyed Hiraṇyapura and killed the great āsura-s and the nivātakavaca-s. I returned to Śākra.

मैंने अपना काम पूरा कर लिया था. मैंने हिरण्यपुर को नष्ट कर दिया था और महान असुरों और निवातकवचों को मार डाला था। मैं शकरा लौट आया।

मम कर्म च देवेन्द्रं मातलिर्विस्तरेण तत् सर्वं विश्रावयामास यथा भूतं महाद्युते

O immensely radiant one! Mātali recounted my deeds in detail to the Indra of the gods, completely and exactly as it had happened—

हे अत्यंत तेजस्वी! मातलि ने देवताओं के इंद्र को मेरे कर्मों का विस्तार से वर्णन किया, पूरी तरह से और बिल्कुल वैसा ही जैसा कि हुआ था -

हिरण्यपुरघातं च मायानां च निवारणम् निवातकवचानां च वधं संख्ये महौजसाम्

the destruction of Hiraṇyapura, the use of māyā, the way it was repulsed and the slaying of the immensely powerful nivātakavaca-s in battle.

हिरण्यपुर का विनाश, माया का उपयोग, उसे कैसे खदेड़ा गया और युद्ध में अत्यंत शक्तिशाली निवातकवचों का वध।

तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवान्प्रीतः सहस्राक्षः पुरंदरः मरुद्भिः सहितः श्रीमान्साधु साध्वित्यथाब्रवीत्

On hearing this, the illustrious Purandara, the one with the thousand eyes, was delighted. In the midst of the Marut-s, he spoke words like, "Wonderful" and "Well done"

यह सुनकर हजारों नेत्रों वाले तेजस्वी पुरन्दर प्रसन्न हो गये। मरुत-स के बीच में उन्होंने "अद्भुत" और "शाबाश" जैसे शब्द बोले।

ततो मां देवराजो वै समाश्वास्य पुनः पुनः अब्रवीद्विबुधैः सार्धमिदं सुमधुरं वचः

Together with the other gods, the king of the gods repeatedly congratulated me and spoke these gentle words.

देवताओं के राजा ने अन्य देवताओं के साथ मिलकर मुझे बार-बार बधाई दी और ये कोमल वचन कहे।

अतिदेवासुरं कर्म कृतमेतत्त्वया रणे गुर्वर्थश्च महान्पार्थ कृतः शत्रून्घ्नता मम

"In battle, you have accomplished a deed that was impossible for the gods and the āsura-s. O Pārtha! By slaying my enemies, you have paid a great preceptor's fee.

"युद्ध में, तुमने वह कार्य किया है जो देवताओं और असुरों के लिए असंभव था। हे पार्थ! मेरे शत्रुओं को मारकर, तुमने एक महान गुरु का शुल्क चुकाया है।"

एवमेव सदा भाव्यं स्थिरेणाजौ धनंजय असंमूढेन चास्त्राणां कर्तव्यं प्रतिपादनम्

O Dhanañjayā! You will always remain as steady in battle. You will know what has to be done and will not be confounded in using these weapons.

हे धनंजय! आप युद्ध में सदैव स्थिर रहेंगे। आपको पता होगा कि क्या करना है और इन हथियारों का उपयोग करने में भ्रमित नहीं होंगे।

अविषह्यो रणे हि त्वं देवदानवराक्षसैः सयक्षासुरगन्धर्वैः सपक्षिगणपन्नगैः

The gods, the dānava-s, the rākṣasa-s, the yakṣa-s, the āsura-s and the gāndharva-s, together with masses of birds and serpents, will not be able to withstand you in battle.

देवता, दानव, राक्षस, यक्ष, असुर और गंधर्व, पक्षियों और नागों के समूह सहित, युद्ध में आपका सामना नहीं कर पाएंगे।

वसुधां चापि कौन्तेय त्वद्बाहुबलनिर्जिताम् पालयिष्यति धर्मात्मा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः

O Kaunteya! Through the strength of your arms, Kuntī's son, Yudhiṣṭhira, with dharma in his soul, will conquer the earth and protect it."

हे कौन्तेय! आपकी भुजाओं के बल से, कुंती के पुत्र युधिष्ठिर, अपनी आत्मा में धर्म के साथ, पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त करेंगे और इसकी रक्षा करेंगे।
