वैशंपायन उवाच मार्कण्डेयं महात्मानमूचुः पाण्डुसुतास्तदा माहात्म्यं द्विजमुख्यानां श्रोतुमिच्छाम कथ्यताम्

Vaiśampāyana said: Then Pāṇḍu's sons told the great-souled Mārkaṇḍeya, "Tell us about the greatness of the foremost of brāhmana-s. We wish to hear about this."

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: तब पाण्डु के पुत्रों ने महात्मा मार्कण्डेय से कहा, "हमें सबसे अग्रणी ब्राह्मण की महानता के बारे में बताओ। हम इसके बारे में सुनना चाहते हैं।"

एवमुक्तः स भगवान्मार्कण्डेयो महातपाः उवाच सुमहातेजाः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः

Thus addressed, the illustrious Mārkaṇḍeya, the great ascetic, extremely energetic and knowledgeable in all the sacred texts, replied,

इस प्रकार संबोधित करते हुए, महान तपस्वी, अत्यंत ऊर्जावान और सभी पवित्र ग्रंथों के जानकार, प्रसिद्ध मार्कंडेय ने उत्तर दिया,

हैहयानां कुलकरो राजा परपुरंजयः कुमारो रूपसंपन्नो मृगयामचरद्बली

"There was once a handsome prince who was the king of the Haihaya-s. He was the pride of his lineage and the destroyer of enemy cities.

"एक बार एक सुंदर राजकुमार था जो हैहया-एस का राजा था। वह अपने वंश का गौरव था और दुश्मन शहरों का विनाशक था।

चरमाणस्तु सोऽरण्ये तृणवीरुत्समावृते कृष्णाजिनोत्तरासङ्गं ददर्श मुनिमन्तिके स तेन निहतोऽरण्ये मन्यमानेन वै मृगम्

He was powerful and handsome and he went out to hunt. When he was roaming around in that forest, overgrown with gras-s and bushes, he saw a sage who was clad in a black antelope skin as his upper garment. He mistook him to be a deer and killed him in the forest.

वह शक्तिशाली और सुंदर था और वह शिकार के लिए निकला था। जब वह घास और झाड़ियों से भरे उस जंगल में घूम रहा था, तो उसने एक ऋषि को देखा, जो अपने ऊपरी वस्त्र के रूप में काले मृग की खाल पहने हुए था। जंगल में उसने उसे हिरण समझकर मार डाला।

व्यथितः कर्म तत्कृत्वा शोकोपहतचेतनः जगाम हैहयानां वै सकाशं प्रथितात्मनाम्

He was pained and sorrowful at his deed and lost his senses. He went to the kings of the Haihaya-s.

वह अपने कृत्य से दुःखी और दुःखी हुआ और अपनी सुध-बुध खो बैठा। वह हैहय राजाओं के पास गया।

राज्ञां राजीवनेत्रोसौ कुमारः पृथिवीपते तेषां च तद्यथावृत्तं कथयामास वै तदा

O lord of the earth! The lotus-eyed prince told great-souled ones exactly what had happened.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! कमल-नेत्र राजकुमार ने महात्माओं को वही बताया जो हुआ था।

तं चापि हिंसितं तात मुनिं मूलफलाशिनम् श्रुत्वा दृष्ट्वा च ते तत्र बभूवुर्दीनमानसाः

O son! On hearing about the violence done to a sage who lived on roots and fruits, and on seeing it, they were distressed in their minds.

हे वत्स उन्होंने कंद-मूल और फल खाकर रहने वाले एक ऋषि की हिंसा के बारे में सुना और देखा तो उनके मन में बहुत दुःख हुआ।

कस्यायमिति ते सर्वे मार्गमाणास्ततस्ततः जग्मुश्चारिष्टनेमेस्ते तार्क्ष्यस्याश्रममञ्जसा

They asked everywhere about whose son he was, and followed a road to the hermitage of Tārkṣya Ariṣṭanemi.

उन्होंने हर जगह पूछा कि वह किसका पुत्र है, और तार्क्ष्य अरिष्टनेमि के आश्रम की ओर जाने लगे।

तेऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं तं मुनिं संशितव्रतम् तस्थुः सर्वे स तु मुनिस्तेषां पूजामथाहरत्

They bowed down before the great-souled sage, whose vows were unwavering. They stood there, while the sage honoured them in return.

वे उस महान आत्मा वाले ऋषि के सामने झुक गये, जिनकी प्रतिज्ञा अटल थी। वे वहीं खड़े रहे, जबकि ऋषि ने बदले में उनका सम्मान किया।

ते तमूचुर्महात्मानं न वयं सत्क्रियां मुने त्वत्तोऽर्हाः कर्मदोषेण ब्राह्मणो हिंसितो हि नः

Then they told the great-souled sage, "We are not deserving of these honours. Through our evil deeds, we have killed a brāhmaṇa."

तब उन्होंने महान आत्मा वाले ऋषि से कहा, "हम इस सम्मान के योग्य नहीं हैं। हमने अपने बुरे कर्मों के माध्यम से एक ब्राह्मण को मार डाला है।"

तानब्रवीत्स विप्रर्षिः कथं वो ब्राह्मणो हतः क्व चासौ ब्रूत सहिताः पश्यध्वं मे तपोबलम्

The brāhmaṇa riṣi replied, "How have you killed a brāhmaṇa? Where is he? Tell me and behold the strength of my austerities."

ब्राह्मण ऋषि ने उत्तर दिया, "तुमने एक ब्राह्मण को कैसे मार डाला? वह कहाँ है? मुझे बताओ और मेरी तपस्या की शक्ति देखो।"

ते तु तत्सर्वमखिलमाख्यायास्मै यथातथम् नापश्यंस्तमृषिं तत्र गतासुं ते समागताः अन्वेषमाणाः सव्रीडाः स्वप्नवद्गतमानसाः

All of them then told him everything, exactly as it had happened. But when they returned, they could not see the dead body of the riṣi there. They searched everywhere and were ashamed. They felt as if their senses had been in the midst of a dream.

फिर उन सबने उसे सब कुछ वैसा ही बताया, जैसा घटित हुआ था। लेकिन जब वे वापस लौटे तो उन्हें वहां ऋषि का शव नहीं दिखा। उन्होंने हर जगह खोजा और शर्मिंदा हुए। उन्हें ऐसा महसूस हुआ मानो उनकी इंद्रियाँ किसी स्वप्न के बीच में हों।

तानब्रवीत्तत्र मुनिस्तार्क्ष्यः परपुरंजयः स्यादयं ब्राह्मणः सोऽथ यो युष्माभिर्विनाशितः पुत्रो ह्ययं मम नृपास्तपोबलसमन्वितः

The sage Tārkṣya then told them, "O destroyers of the cities of enemies! Is this the brāhmaṇa who had been killed by you? O kings! This is my son. He possesses the power of austerities."

तब ऋषि तार्क्ष्य ने उनसे कहा, "हे शत्रुओं के नगरों को नष्ट करने वालों! क्या यह वही ब्राह्मण है जिसे तुमने मार डाला था? हे राजाओं! यह मेरा पुत्र है। इसमें तपस्या की शक्ति है।"

ते तु दृष्ट्वैव तमृषिं विस्मयं परमं गताः महदाश्चर्यमिति वै विब्रुवाणा महीपते

O lord of the earth! On seeing that riṣi, they were struck with great wonder and exclaimed, "This is extremely wonderful.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! उस ऋषि को देखकर, वे बड़े आश्चर्य से चकित हो गए और बोले, "यह अत्यंत अद्भुत है।

मृतो ह्ययमतो दृष्टः कथं जीवितमाप्तवान् किमेतत्तपसो वीर्यं येनायं जीवितः पुनः श्रोतुमिच्छाम विप्रर्षे यदि श्रोतव्यमित्युत

We have seen him dead. How can a dead person be restored to life? It is through the power of austerities that he has become alive again? O brāhmaṇa riṣi! We are desirous of hearing this, if indeed it can be heard."

हमने उसे मरा हुआ देखा है. एक मृत व्यक्ति को पुनः जीवित कैसे किया जा सकता है? तपस्या के बल से ही वह पुनः जीवित हो गया है? हे ब्राह्मण ऋषि! हम इसे सुनने के इच्छुक हैं, यदि वास्तव में इसे सुना जा सकता है।"

स तानुवाच नास्माकं मृत्युः प्रभवते नृपाः कारणं वः प्रवक्ष्यामि हेतुयोगं समासतः

He replied, "O kings! Death cannot exhibit its powers before us. I will briefly tell you about the reason for this.

उन्होंने उत्तर दिया, "हे राजाओं! मृत्यु हमारे सामने अपनी शक्तियों का प्रदर्शन नहीं कर सकती। मैं आपको इसका कारण संक्षेप में बताऊंगा।"

सत्यमेवाभिजानीमो नानृते कुर्महे मनः स्वधर्ममनुतिष्ठामस्तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः

We know nothing but the truth. We do not even think of that which is false. Since we are always established in our own dharma, death holds no fear for us.

हम सत्य के अलावा कुछ नहीं जानते। जो मिथ्या है उसके बारे में हम सोचते ही नहीं। चूँकि हम सदैव अपने धर्म में स्थित रहते हैं, इसलिए मृत्यु से हमें कोई भय नहीं रहता।

यद्ब्राह्मणानां कुशलं तदेषां कथयामहे नैषां दुश्चरितं ब्रूमस्तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः

We always speak about the welfare of brāhmana-s, and never about their evil deeds. Therefore, we have no fear of death.

हम हमेशा ब्राह्मणों के कल्याण के बारे में बात करते हैं, उनके बुरे कर्मों के बारे में कभी नहीं। अत: हमें मृत्यु का कोई भय नहीं है।

अतिथीनन्नपानेन भृत्यानत्यशनेन च तेजस्विदेशवासाच्च तस्मान्मृत्युभयं न नः

We serve our guests with food and drink. We always feed our servants. We live in a region inhabited by energetic ones. Therefore, we have no fear of death.

हम अपने मेहमानों को भोजन और पेय परोसते हैं। हम हमेशा अपने नौकरों को खाना खिलाते हैं। हम ऐसे क्षेत्र में रहते हैं जहां ऊर्जावान लोग रहते हैं। अत: हमें मृत्यु का कोई भय नहीं है।

एतद्वै लेशमात्रं वः समाख्यातं विमत्सराः गच्छध्वं सहिताः सर्वे न पापाद्भयमस्ति वः

I have only told you a very little bit. Now all of you return, without any envy. Do not be frightened that you have sinned."

मैंने आपको बस थोड़ा सा ही बताया है. अब आप सभी लोग बिना किसी ईर्ष्या के वापस आ जाएं।' मत डरो कि तुमने पाप किया है।"

एवमस्त्विति ते सर्वे प्रतिपूज्य महामुनिम् स्वदेशमगमन्हृष्टा राजानो भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Then they agreed that it would be that way, and worshipped the great sage. The kings happily returned to their own kingdom."

हे भरत वंश में बैल! तब वे सहमत हुए कि ऐसा ही होगा, और उन्होंने महान ऋषि की पूजा की। राजा ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी अपने राज्य लौट आये।”
