जनमेजय उवाच अस्त्रहेतोर्गते पार्थे शक्रलोकं महात्मनि युधिष्ठिरप्रभृतयः किमकुर्वन्त पाण्डवाः

Janamejaya asked: When the great-souled Pārtha went to Śākra's world for the sake of the weapons, what did Yudhiṣṭhira and the other Pāṇḍava-s do?

जनमेजय ने पूछा: जब महान आत्मा पार्थ हथियारों की खातिर शक्र की दुनिया में गए, तो युधिष्ठिर और अन्य पांडवों ने क्या किया?

वैशंपायन उवाच अस्त्रहेतोर्गते पार्थे शक्रलोकं महात्मनि न्यवसन्कृष्णया सार्धं काम्यके पुरुषर्षभाः

Vaiśampāyana said: When the great-souled Pārtha went to Śākra's world for the sake of the weapons, those bulls among men lived in Kāmyaka, together with Kṛṣṇā.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब महान आत्मा पार्थ हथियारों की खातिर शक्र की दुनिया में गए, तो पुरुषों के बीच वे बैल कृष्ण के साथ काम्यक में रहते थे।

ततः कदाचिदेकान्ते विविक्त इव शाद्वले दुःखार्ता भरतश्रेष्ठा निषेदुः सह कृष्णया धनंजयं शोचमानाः साश्रुकण्ठाः सुदुःखिताः

One day, the best of the Bhārata-s, together with Kṛṣṇā, were unhappily seated in a deserted spot. They sorrowed over Dhanañjayā. There were tears in their throats and they were miserable.

एक दिन, कृष्ण सहित सर्वश्रेष्ठ भरत एक निर्जन स्थान पर अप्रसन्नतापूर्वक बैठे हुए थे। वे धनंजय पर दुःखी हुए। उनके गले में आँसू थे और वे दुखी थे।

तद्वियोगाद्धि तान्सर्वाञ्शोकः समभिपुप्लुवे धनंजयवियोगाच्च राज्यनाशाच्च दुःखिताः

All of them were flooded with grief on account of the separation from Dhanañjayā and were miserable because of the loss of the kingdom.

वे सभी धन्नजय के वियोग से शोक में डूबे हुए थे और राज्य के चले जाने से दुखी थे।

अथ भीमो महाबाहुर्युधिष्ठिरमभाषत निदेशात्ते महाराज गतोऽसौ पुरुषर्षभः अर्जुनः पाण्डुपुत्राणां यस्मिन्प्राणाः प्रतिष्ठिताः

Then the mighty-armed Bhīmā spoke to Yudhiṣṭhira, "O great king! It was on your instructions that the bull among men went. The lives of the sons of Pāṇḍu are established in Arjuna.

तब महाबाहु भीम ने युधिष्ठिर से कहा, "हे महान राजा! यह आपके आदेश पर था कि पुरुषों के बीच बैल चला गया। पांडु के पुत्रों का जीवन अर्जुन में स्थापित है।"

यस्मिन्विनष्टे पाञ्चालाः सह पुत्रैस्तथा वयम् सात्यकिर्वासुदेवश्च विनश्येयुरसंशयम्

If he is destroyed, there is no doubt that we ourselves, the Pāñcāla-s and their sons, Sātyaki and Vāsudeva will be destroyed.

यदि वह नष्ट हो गया, तो इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि हम स्वयं, पंचाल और उनके पुत्र, सात्यकि और वासुदेव नष्ट हो जायेंगे।

योऽसौ गच्छति तेजस्वी बहून्क्लेशानचिन्तयन् भवन्नियोगाद्बीभत्सुस्ततो दुःखतरं नु किम्

That energetic one departed, without thinking about the many difficulties he would confront. Bībhatsu went on your instructions. What can cause greater grief than that?

वह ऊर्जावान व्यक्ति यह सोचे बिना चला गया कि उसे कितनी कठिनाइयों का सामना करना पड़ेगा। बिभात्सु आपके आदेश पर चला गया। इससे बड़ा दुःख और क्या हो सकता है?

यस्य बाहू समाश्रित्य वयं सर्वे महात्मनः मन्यामहे जितानाजौ परान्प्राप्तां च मेदिनीम्

All of us have depended on the arms of that great-souled one, thinking that we will triumph over our enemies and win the earth.

हम सभी उस महान आत्मा की भुजाओं पर निर्भर हैं, यह सोचकर कि हम अपने शत्रुओं पर विजय प्राप्त करेंगे और पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त करेंगे।

यस्य प्रभावान्न मया सभामध्ये धनुष्मतः नीता लोकममुं सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्राः ससौबलाः

It was the influence of the one with the bow that prevented me from killing all of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, together with Saubala, in the midst of that sabhā.

यह धनुषधारी का ही प्रभाव था जिसने मुझे उस सभा के बीच सौबाला सहित धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्रों को मारने से रोक दिया।

ते वयं बाहुबलिनः क्रोधमुत्थितमात्मनः सहामहे भवन्मूलं वासुदेवेन पालिताः

We have the strength of our arms and we are controlling the anger for which, you are the reason. We are protected by Vāsudeva.

हमारी भुजाओं में ताकत है और हम क्रोध को नियंत्रित कर रहे हैं, जिसका कारण आप हैं। हम वासुदेव द्वारा संरक्षित हैं.

वयं हि सह कृष्णेन हत्वा कर्णमुखान्परान् स्वबाहुविजितां कृत्स्नां प्रशासेम वसुंधराम्

If Kṛṣṇā and we had killed the enemies led by Karṇa, we would have ruled the earth, conquered through the strength of our arms.

यदि कृष्ण और हमने कर्ण के नेतृत्व वाले शत्रुओं को मार डाला होता, तो हम अपनी भुजाओं के बल पर विजय प्राप्त करके पृथ्वी पर शासन कर चुके होते।

भवतो द्यूतदोषेण सर्वे वयमुपप्लुताः अहीनपौरुषा राजन्बलिभिर्बलवत्तमाः

All of us are faced with this calamity because of your vice of gambling. O king! We do not lack in manliness. We are supremely strong among those who are strong.

तुम्हारे जुए के दोष के कारण ही हम सभी को यह विपत्ति सहनी पड़ी है। हे राजा! हममें मर्दानगी की कमी नहीं है. जो बलवान हैं उनमें हम परम बलशाली हैं।

क्षात्रं धर्मं महाराज समवेक्षितुमर्हसि न हि धर्मो महाराज क्षत्रियस्य वनाश्रयः राज्यमेव परं धर्मं क्षत्रियस्य विदुर्बुधाः

O great king! You must bear in mind the dharma of kṣatriya-s. It is not the dharma of kṣatriya-s to reside in the forest. The learned have said that the supreme dharma of kṣatriya-s is to rule over the kingdom.

हे महान राजा! तुम्हें क्षत्रिय-धर्म को ध्यान में रखना चाहिए। वन में निवास करना क्षत्रियों का धर्म नहीं है। विद्वानों ने कहा है कि क्षत्रियों का सर्वोच्च धर्म राज्य पर शासन करना है।

स क्षत्रधर्मविद्राजन्मा धर्म्यान्नीनशः पथः प्राग्द्वादश समा राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रान्निहन्महि

O king! You know the dharma of kṣatriya-s. Do not stray from that path of dharma.

हे राजा! आप क्षत्रियों के धर्म को जानते हैं । धर्म के उस मार्ग से मत हटो।

निवर्त्य च वनात्पार्थमानाय्य च जनार्दनम् व्यूढानीकान्महाराज जवेनैव महाहवे धार्तराष्ट्रानमुं लोकं गमयामि विशां पते

O king! Let us kill the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra before the twelve years have passed. Return from the forest and summon back Pārtha and Janārdana. O great king! O lord of the earth! Let us kill their armies and battle formations in a great battle.

हे राजा! आइए बारह वर्ष बीतने से पहले हम धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों को मार डालें। वन से लौटकर पार्थ और जनार्दन को बुलाओ। हे महान राजा! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आइए हम एक महान युद्ध में उनकी सेनाओं और युद्ध संरचनाओं को मार डालें।

सर्वानहं हनिष्यामि धार्तराष्ट्रान्ससौबलान् दुर्योधनं च कर्णं च यो वान्यः प्रतियोत्स्यते

I will send the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra to another world. Together with Saubala, Duryodhana, Karṇa and whoever else wants to fight back, I will kill all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.

मैं धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों को दूसरी दुनिया में भेज दूंगा। सौबल, दुर्योधन, कर्ण और जो कोई भी वापस लड़ना चाहता है, उसके साथ मिलकर मैं धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्रों को मार डालूँगा।

मया प्रशमिते पश्चात्त्वमेष्यसि वनात्पुनः एवं कृते न ते दोषो भविष्यति विशां पते

After I have pacified them, you can return again to the forest. O lord of the earth! If we do this, no blame will be attached to you.

मेरे द्वारा उन्हें शान्त करने के बाद तुम पुनः वन में लौट सकते हो। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! यदि हम ऐसा करेंगे तो आप पर कोई दोष नहीं लगेगा।

यज्ञैश्च विविधैस्तात कृतं पापमरिंदम अवधूय महाराज गच्छेम स्वर्गमुत्तमम्

O father! O destroyer of enemies! If a sin is committed, we can perform various sacrifices. O great king! Wiping it off in that way, we can attain supreme heaven.

हे पिता! हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! यदि कोई पाप हो जाता है तो हम विभिन्न प्रकार के यज्ञ कर सकते हैं। हे महान राजा! इस प्रकार उसे मिटाकर हम परम स्वर्ग को प्राप्त कर सकते हैं।

एवमेतद्भवेद्राजन्यदि राजा न बालिशः अस्माकं दीर्घसूत्रः स्याद्भवान्धर्मपरायणः

O king! This is the way it should be, if our king is not foolish or is not given to procrastination. Indeed, you are always devoted to dharma.

हे राजा! यदि हमारा राजा मूर्ख न हो या काम में टाल-मटोल करने वाला न हो तो ऐसा ही होना चाहिए। सचमुच, आप सदैव धर्म के प्रति समर्पित रहते हैं।

निकृत्या निकृतिप्रज्ञा हन्तव्या इति निश्चयः न हि नैकृतिकं हत्वा निकृत्या पापमुच्यते

But it is certainly the way of the wise to kill those who are deceitful through deceitful means. There is no sin attached to killing deceitful ones through deceitful means.

परन्तु धोखेबाजों को कपटपूर्ण तरीकों से मार डालना निश्चय ही बुद्धिमानों का मार्ग है। धोखेबाजों को छलपूर्वक मारने से कोई पाप नहीं लगता।

तथा भारत धर्मेषु धर्मज्ञैरिह दृश्यते अहोरात्रं महाराज तुल्यं संवत्सरेण हि

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O great king! Those who are learned in dharma say that in accordance with dharma, a day and a night are equal to an entire year.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे महान राजा! जो लोग धर्म के जानकार हैं, वे कहते हैं कि धर्म के अनुसार, एक दिन और एक रात पूरे वर्ष के बराबर होते हैं।

तथैव वेदवचनं श्रूयते नित्यदा विभो संवत्सरो महाराज पूर्णो भवति कृच्छ्रतः

O illustrious one! O great king! We have heard the words from the Veda-s that in times of calamity, one entire year is equal to a day.

हे महामहिम! हे महान राजा! हमने वेदों में यह वचन सुना है कि विपत्ति के समय पूरा एक वर्ष एक दिन के बराबर होता है।

यदि वेदाः प्रमाणं ते दिवसादूर्ध्वमच्युत त्रयोदश समाः कालो ज्ञायतां परिनिष्ठितः

O Acyuta! Therefore, if the Veda-s are the authority, regard the passage of thirteen years as equal to a single day.

हे अच्युत! इसलिए, यदि वेद प्रमाण हैं, तो तेरह वर्षों के बीतने को एक दिन के बराबर समझो।

कालो दुर्योधनं हन्तुं सानुबन्धमरिंदम एकाग्रां पृथिवीं सर्वां पुरा राजन्करोति सः

O destroyer of enemies! This is the time to kill Duryodhana and his followers. O king! Otherwise, he will bring the entire earth under his suzerainty."

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! यह दुर्योधन और उसके अनुयायियों को मारने का समय है। हे राजा! अन्यथा, वह पूरी पृथ्वी को अपने आधिपत्य में ले लेगा।”

एवं ब्रुवाणं भीमं तु धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः उवाच सान्त्वयन्राजा मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय पाण्डवम्

When Bhīmā said this, Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira inhaled the fragrance of the Pāṇḍava's head and spoke to him in tones of pacification,

जब भीम ने ऐसा कहा, तो धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर ने पांडव के सिर की सुगंध ली और उन्हें शांत करने के स्वर में कहा,

असंशयं महाबाहो हनिष्यसि सुयोधनम् वर्षात्त्रयोदशादूर्ध्वं सह गाण्डीवधन्वना

"O mighty-armed one! There is no doubt that you will kill Suyodhana, together with Gandivadhanva, but only after the thirteen years have passed.

"हे महाबाहु! इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि आप गांडीवधन्वा के साथ मिलकर सुयोधन को मार डालेंगे, लेकिन केवल तेरह वर्ष बीत जाने के बाद।

यच्च मा भाषसे पार्थ प्राप्तः काल इति प्रभो अनृतं नोत्सहे वक्तुं न ह्येतन्मयि विद्यते

O Pārtha! O illustrious one! You have said that the time has arrived. But I cannot utter a lie, because that finds no place in me.

हे पार्थ! हे महामहिम! आपने कहा कि समय आ गया है. लेकिन मैं झूठ नहीं बोल सकता, क्योंकि मेरे अंदर उसके लिए कोई जगह नहीं है।

अन्तरेणापि कौन्तेय निकृतिं पापनिश्चयम् हन्ता त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष सानुबन्धं सुयोधनम्

O Kaunteya! O invincible one! You will kill Suyodhana and his followers, but without resorting to deceit, because that will certainly be sin."

हे कौन्तेय! हे अजेय! तुम सुयोधन और उसके अनुयायियों को मार डालोगे, लेकिन छल का सहारा लिए बिना, क्योंकि वह निश्चित रूप से पाप होगा।"

एवं ब्रुवति भीमं तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे आजगाम महाभागो बृहदश्वो महानृषिः

While Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira was speaking to Bhīmā, the immensely fortunate and great riṣi Bṛhadaśva arrived.

जब धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर भीम से बात कर रहे थे, अत्यंत भाग्यशाली और महान ऋषि बृहदश्व आये।

तमभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मात्मा संप्राप्तं धर्मचारिणम् शास्त्रवन्मधुपर्केण पूजयामास धर्मराट्

He was a follower of dharma. And when Dharmarāja, with dharma in his soul, saw him arrive, he worshipped him with madhuparka, as is prescribed in the sacred texts.

वह धर्म का अनुयायी था। और जब धर्मराज ने, अपनी आत्मा में धर्म के साथ, उसे आते देखा, तो उसने मधुपर्क से उसकी पूजा की, जैसा कि पवित्र ग्रंथों में बताया गया है।

आश्वस्तं चैनमासीनमुपासीनो युधिष्ठिरः अभिप्रेक्ष्य महाबाहुः कृपणं बह्वभाषत

When he was rested and seated, the mighty-armed Yudhiṣṭhira looked at him and addressed him in these piteous words,

जब वह विश्राम करके बैठ गया, तब महाबाहु युधिष्ठिर ने उसकी ओर देखा और उसे इन करुण शब्दों में संबोधित किया,

अक्षद्यूतेन भगवन्धनं राज्यं च मे हृतम् आहूय निकृतिप्रज्ञैः कितवैरक्षकोविदैः

"O illustrious one! I have been robbed of my riches and my kingdom in gambling with dice. I was challenged by those who were skilled in deceit and skilled in playing with dice.

"हे महान! पासे के साथ जुए में मुझसे मेरा धन और मेरा राज्य छीन लिया गया है। मुझे उन लोगों ने चुनौती दी जो छल में कुशल थे और पासे के साथ खेलने में कुशल थे।

अनक्षज्ञस्य हि सतो निकृत्या पापनिश्चयैः भार्या च मे सभां नीता प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी

I am not skilled in dice and the deceitful ones had decided on a course of evil. My wife is more precious to me than my own life and she was dragged into the sabhā.

मैं पासों में कुशल नहीं हूं और धोखेबाजों ने दुष्टता का रास्ता चुना है। मेरी पत्नी मेरे लिए अपनी जान से भी ज्यादा कीमती है और उसे सभा में घसीटा गया।

अस्ति राजा मया कश्चिदल्पभाग्यतरो भुवि भवता दृष्टपूर्वो वा श्रुतपूर्वोऽपि वा भवेत् न मत्तो दुःखिततरः पुमानस्तीति मे मतिः

Is there any king on earth who is as misfortunate as I am? Have you seen anyone else? Have you heard of anyone else? I think that there is no man who is more miserable than I am."

क्या पृथ्वी पर कोई राजा मेरे समान अभागा है? क्या आपने किसी और को देखा है? क्या आपने किसी और के बारे में सुना है? मुझे लगता है कि मुझसे ज्यादा दुखी कोई भी आदमी नहीं है।"

बृहदश्व उवाच यद्ब्रवीषि महाराज न मत्तो विद्यते क्वचित् अल्पभाग्यतरः कश्चित्पुमानस्तीति पाण्डव

Bṛhadaśva replied: "O great king! O Pāṇḍava! You have said you think that there is no man more unfortunate than you are.

बृहदश्व ने उत्तर दिया: "हे महान राजा! हे पांडव! आपने कहा है कि आप सोचते हैं कि आपसे अधिक दुर्भाग्यशाली कोई व्यक्ति नहीं है।

अत्र ते कथयिष्यामि यदि शुश्रूषसेऽनघ यस्त्वत्तो दुःखिततरो राजासीत्पृथिवीपते

O unblemished one! O lord of the earth! On this, I can narrate an account, if you wish to hear it. This is the story of a king who was more miserable than you."

हे निष्कलंक! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! इस पर मैं एक वृत्तान्त सुना सकता हूँ, यदि आप सुनना चाहें। यह एक ऐसे राजा की कहानी है जो आपसे भी ज्यादा दुखी था।”

वैशंपायन उवाच अथैनमब्रवीद्राजा ब्रवीतु भगवानिति इमामवस्थां संप्राप्तं श्रोतुमिच्छामि पार्थिवम्

Vaiśampāyana said: At this, the king told the illustrious one that he wished to hear the account. He wished to hear about the king who found himself in a situation like his own.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: इस पर, राजा ने उस प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्ति से कहा कि वह वृत्तांत सुनना चाहता है। वह उस राजा के बारे में सुनना चाहता था जिसने खुद को उसकी जैसी स्थिति में पाया था।

बृहदश्व उवाच शृणु राजन्नवहितः सह भ्रातृभिरच्युत यस्त्वत्तो दुःखिततरो राजासीत्पृथिवीपते

Bṛhadaśva said: "O king! O lord of the earth! O Acyuta! Then listen with your brothers the tale of that king on earth who was more sad than you.

बृहदश्व ने कहा: "हे राजा! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे अच्युत! फिर अपने भाइयों के साथ पृथ्वी पर उस राजा की कहानी सुनो जो तुमसे भी अधिक दुखी था।

निषधेषु महीपालो वीरसेन इति स्म ह तस्य पुत्रोऽभवन्नाम्ना नलो धर्मार्थदर्शिवान्

There was a king of the niṣadha-s by the name of Vīrasena. He had a son named Nālā, learned in the ways of dharma and artha.

वीरसेन नाम का एक निषध राजा था। उनका नाला नाम का एक पुत्र था, जो धर्म और अर्थ की शिक्षा प्राप्त करता था।

स निकृत्या जितो राजा पुष्करेणेति नः श्रुतम् वनवासमदुःखार्हो भार्यया न्यवसत्सह

We have heard that this king was deceitfully defeated by Puṣkara and though he did not deserve it, lived unhappily in the forest with his wife.

हमने सुना है कि इस राजा को पुष्कर ने धोखे से हरा दिया था और हालाँकि वह इसके योग्य नहीं था, फिर भी अपनी पत्नी के साथ जंगल में दुखी होकर रहता था।

न तस्याश्वो न च रथो न भ्राता न च बान्धवाः वने निवसतो राजञ्शिष्यन्ते स्म कदाचन

When that king lived in the forest, he never had any horses, any chariots, any brothers or any kin.

जब वह राजा वन में रहता था, तब उसके पास न तो घोड़े थे, न रथ, न भाई, न कुटुम्बी।

भवान्हि संवृतो वीरैर्भ्रातृभिर्देवसंमितैः ब्रह्मकल्पैर्द्विजाग्र्यैश्च तस्मान्नार्हसि शोचितुम्

But you are surrounded by your brave brothers, who are the equals of the gods and by the foremost among brāhmana-s, who are like Brahmā himself. Therefore, do not sorrow."

लेकिन आप अपने वीर भाइयों से घिरे हुए हैं, जो देवताओं के तुल्य हैं और ब्राह्मणों में सबसे अग्रणी हैं, जो स्वयं ब्रह्मा के समान हैं। इसलिए दुःख मत करो।”

युधिष्ठिर उवाच विस्तरेणाहमिच्छामि नलस्य सुमहात्मनः चरितं वदतां श्रेष्ठ तन्ममाख्यातुमर्हसि

Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O best among eloquent ones! I wish to hear in detail the account of that great-souled Nālā. Please tell it to me."

युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: "हे वक्ताओं में श्रेष्ठ! मैं उस महान आत्मा नल का वृत्तांत विस्तार से सुनना चाहता हूं। कृपया मुझे बताएं।"
