बृहदश्व उवाच दमयन्ती तु तच्छ्रुत्वा वचो हंसस्य भारत तदा प्रभृति नस्वस्था नलं प्रति बभूव सा

Bṛhadaśva said: "O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Having heard the words of the swan, on account of Nālā, Damayantī no longer had control over herself.

बृहदश्व ने कहा: "हे भरत वंश के वंशज! नल के कारण हंस की बातें सुनकर दमयंती का अब खुद पर नियंत्रण नहीं रहा।

ततश्चिन्तापरा दीना विवर्णवदना कृशा बभूव दमयन्ती तु निःश्वासपरमा तदा

Thinking about this, she became dejected, pale of complexion and thin. Damayantī became prone to sighing deeply.

यह सोचते-सोचते वह उदास हो गयी, उसका रंग पीला पड़ गया और वह पतली हो गयी। दमयन्ती गहरी आहें भरने को प्रवृत्त हो गयी।

ऊर्ध्वदृष्टिर्ध्यानपरा बभूवोन्मत्तदर्शना न शय्यासनभोगेषु रतिं विन्दति कर्हिचित्

She would cast her glance up at the sky. She looked like one demented. She found no pleasure in her bed, in her seats or in enjoyment.

वह अपनी नज़र आसमान की ओर उठाती। वह विक्षिप्त सी लग रही थी. उसे अपने बिस्तर में, अपनी सीटों में या आनंद में कोई आनंद नहीं मिला।

न नक्तं न दिवा शेते हा हेति वदती मुहुः तामस्वस्थां तदाकारां सख्यस्ता जज्ञुरिङ्गितैः

She did not rest during the day or the night and continuously lamented and wept. Her friends saw her state and her form and knew from the signs that she was ill.

उसने दिन या रात में आराम नहीं किया और लगातार विलाप करती रही और रोती रही। उसके मित्रों ने उसकी अवस्था और रूप देखा और लक्षणों से जान लिया कि वह बीमार है।

ततो विदर्भपतये दमयन्त्याः सखीगणः न्यवेदयत नस्वस्थां दमयन्तीं नरेश्वर

O lord of men! Damayantī's crowd of friends reported this to the king of Vidarbhā. They recounted her state.

हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! दमयंती की सहेलियों की भीड़ ने इसकी सूचना विदर्भ राजा को दी। उन्होंने उसकी स्थिति का वर्णन किया।

तच्छ्रुत्वा नृपतिर्भीमो दमयन्तीसखीगणात् चिन्तयामास तत्कार्यं सुमहत्स्वां सुतां प्रति

On hearing about this from Damayantī's crowd of friends, King Bhīmā began to think about the great task that he would have to perform for his daughter's sake.

दमयंती के दोस्तों की भीड़ से यह सुनकर राजा भीम अपनी बेटी की खातिर कितना बड़ा काम करना होगा, इसके बारे में सोचने लगे।

स समीक्ष्य महीपालः स्वां सुतां प्राप्तयौवनाम् अपश्यदात्मनः कार्यं दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम्

The king reflected on this and decided that his daughter had attained maturity. He saw that his task was to organize a svayaṃvara for Damayantī.

राजा ने इस पर विचार किया और निर्णय लिया कि उसकी बेटी वयस्क हो गई है। उन्होंने देखा कि उनका कार्य दमयंती के लिए स्वयंवर का आयोजन करना था।

स संनिपातयामास महीपालान्विशां पते अनुभूयतामयं वीराः स्वयंवर इति प्रभो

O lord of the earth! O illustrious one! He invited all the brave lords of the earth to attend the svayaṃvara.

हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! हे महामहिम! उन्होंने पृथ्वी के सभी बहादुर राजाओं को स्वयंवर में भाग लेने के लिए आमंत्रित किया।

श्रुत्वा तु पार्थिवाः सर्वे दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम् अभिजग्मुस्तदा भीमं राजानो भीमशासनात्

On hearing that Damayantī's svayaṃvara would be held, on Bhīmā's instructions, all the kings came to King Bhīmā.

यह सुनकर कि दमयंती का स्वयंवर आयोजित किया जाएगा, भीम के आदेश पर सभी राजा राजा भीम के पास आये।

हस्त्यश्वरथघोषेण नादयन्तो वसुंधराम् विचित्रमाल्याभरणैर्बलैर्दृश्यैः स्वलंकृतैः

The earth was filled with the roar of elephants, horses and chariots. Those great-souled kings could be seen with their decorated armies, bedecked in colourful garlands and ornaments.

पृथ्वी हाथियों, घोड़ों और रथों की गर्जना से भर गई। वे महाबली राजा अपनी सजी-धजी सेनाओं के साथ, रंग-बिरंगी मालाओं और आभूषणों से सुसज्जित दिखाई दे रहे थे।

एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु पुराणावृषिसत्तमौ अटमानौ महात्मानाविन्द्रलोकमितो गतौ

At this time, the two supreme and ancient riṣi-s, were roaming around and those great-souled ones went to Indra's world.

इस समय दो श्रेष्ठ और प्राचीन ऋषि-मुनि इधर-उधर घूम रहे थे और वे महात्मा इन्द्र के लोक में चले गये।

नारदः पर्वतश्चैव महात्मानौ महाव्रतौ देवराजस्य भवनं विविशाते सुपूजितौ

They were the great-souled Nārada and Pārvata, who were greatly rigid in their vows. They entered the palace of the king of the gods and were received with homage.

वे महान आत्मा वाले नारद और पर्वत थे, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञाओं में बहुत कठोर थे। उन्होंने देवताओं के राजा के महल में प्रवेश किया और उनका सम्मानपूर्वक स्वागत किया गया।

तावर्चित्वा सहस्राक्षस्ततः कुशलमव्ययम् पप्रच्छानामयं चापि तयोः सर्वगतं विभुः

The lord with the thousand eyes worshipped them and asked about their welfare, their health and about everything else.

हज़ार आँखों वाले भगवान ने उनकी पूजा की और उनके कल्याण, उनके स्वास्थ्य और बाकी सभी चीज़ों के बारे में पूछा।

नारद उवाच आवयोः कुशलं देव सर्वत्रगतमीश्वर लोके च मघवन्कृत्स्ने नृपाः कुशलिनो विभो

Nārada said: "O lord! O god! O illustrious one! O Maghavan! We are well in every respect. The entire world is well and so are the kings."

नारद ने कहा: "हे भगवान! हे भगवान! हे महामहिम! हे मघवन! हम हर तरह से अच्छे हैं। पूरी दुनिया अच्छी तरह से है और राजा भी हैं।"

बृहदश्व उवाच नारदस्य वचः श्रुत्वा पप्रच्छ बलवृत्रहा धर्मज्ञाः पृथिवीपालास्त्यक्तजीवितयोधिनः

Brihadasva said: Hearing the words of Nārada, the slayer of Bāla and Vṛtra asked, "The righteous lords of the earth give up their lives in fighting.

बृहदश्व ने कहा: नारद के वचन सुनकर बाला और वृत्र के हत्यारे ने पूछा, "पृथ्वी के धर्मात्मा राजा युद्ध में अपने प्राण त्याग देते हैं।

शस्त्रेण निधनं काले ये गच्छन्त्यपराङ्मुखाः अयं लोकोऽक्षयस्तेषां यथैव मम कामधुक्

When the time for death arrives through weapons, they go towards it without hesitation. This eternal world is theirs and every object of desire, as it is for me.

जब हथियारों के माध्यम से मृत्यु का समय आ जाता है तो वे बिना किसी हिचकिचाहट के उसकी ओर बढ़ जाते हैं। यह शाश्वत संसार उनका है और प्रत्येक इच्छा की वस्तु मेरे लिए है।

क्व नु ते क्षत्रियाः शूरा न हि पश्यामि तानहम् आगच्छतो महीपालानतिथीन्दयितान्मम

But I no longer see those brave kṣatriya-s. Why do those kings no longer come to me as my beloved guests?"

परन्तु मैं अब उन वीर क्षत्रियों को नहीं देखता। वे राजा अब मेरे प्रिय अतिथि बनकर मेरे पास क्यों नहीं आते?”

एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण नारदः प्रत्यभाषत शृणु मे भगवन्येन न दृश्यन्ते महीक्षितः

Thus addressed by Śākra, Nārada replied, "O illustrious one! Listen as to why these lords of the earth can no longer be seen.

शक्र द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर, नारद ने उत्तर दिया, "हे महान! सुनो कि पृथ्वी के ये स्वामी अब क्यों नहीं देखे जा सकते हैं।

विदर्भराजदुहिता दमयन्तीति विश्रुता रूपेण समतिक्रान्ता पृथिव्यां सर्वयोषितः

The king of Vidarbhā has a famous daughter by the name of Damayantī. In her beauty, she surpasses all the women on earth.

विदर्भ देश के राजा की दमयन्ती नाम की प्रसिद्ध कन्या थी। अपनी खूबसूरती में वह दुनिया की सभी महिलाओं से आगे निकल जाती हैं।

तस्याः स्वयंवरः शक्र भविता नचिरादिव तत्र गच्छन्ति राजानो राजपुत्राश्च सर्वशः

O Śākra! Her svayaṃvara is due to take place soon. All the kings and the princes are going there.

हे शक्र! उसका स्वयंवर जल्द ही होने वाला है। सभी राजा और राजकुमार वहाँ जा रहे हैं।

तां रत्नभूतां लोकस्य प्रार्थयन्तो महीक्षितः काङ्क्षन्ति स्म विशेषेण बलवृत्रनिषूदन

O destroyer of Bāla and Vṛtra! All the kings crave for this jewel of the world and desire her immensely."

हे बल और वृत्र के विनाशक! सभी राजा संसार के इस रत्न की लालसा रखते हैं और उसकी अत्यधिक इच्छा करते हैं।"

एतस्मिन्कथ्यमाने तु लोकपालाश्च साग्निकाः आजग्मुर्देवराजस्य समीपममरोत्तमाः

When they were conversing thus, the lords of the world, together with Agni, all supreme among the immortals, came before the king of the gods.

जब वे इस प्रकार बातचीत कर रहे थे, तो संसार के देवता, अग्नि सहित, अमरों में सर्वोच्च, देवताओं के राजा के सामने आये।

ततस्तच्छुश्रुवुः सर्वे नारदस्य वचो महत् श्रुत्वा चैवाब्रुवन्हृष्टा गच्छामो वयमप्युत

All of them then heard the great words that Nārada spoke. On hearing these words, they happily said that they would go too.

तब उन सभी ने नारद द्वारा कहे गए महान शब्दों को सुना। ये बातें सुनकर उन्होंने खुशी से कहा कि हम भी चलेंगे।

ततः सर्वे महाराज सगणाः सहवाहनाः विदर्भानभितो जग्मुर्यत्र सर्वे महीक्षितः

O great king! With their followers and with their vehicles, all of them went to Vidarbhā, where all the lords of the earth had gone.

हे महान राजा! वे सभी अपने अनुचरों तथा वाहनों सहित विदर्भ को गये, जहाँ पृथ्वी के समस्त देवता गये हुए थे।

नलोऽपि राजा कौन्तेय श्रुत्वा राज्ञां समागमम् अभ्यगच्छददीनात्मा दमयन्तीमनुव्रतः

O Kaunteya! On hearing about that gathering of kings, King Nālā also set out, happy in his heart and with his mind fixed on Damayantī.

हे कौन्तेय! राजाओं की उस सभा के बारे में सुनकर राजा नल भी मन में प्रसन्न और दमयन्ती पर मन लगाकर चल पड़े।

अथ देवाः पथि नलं ददृशुर्भूतले स्थितम् साक्षादिव स्थितं मूर्त्या मन्मथं रूपसंपदा

On their way, the gods saw Nālā on the ground. He was like Manmatha personified in his richness of beauty.

रास्ते में देवताओं ने नल को जमीन पर देखा। वह अपनी सुंदरता की समृद्धि में मन्मथा की तरह मूर्तिमान थे।

तं दृष्ट्वा लोकपालास्ते भ्राजमानं यथा रविम् तस्थुर्विगतसंकल्पा विस्मिता रूपसंपदा

The lokapāla-s saw that he was as resplendent as the sun. They wondered at the richness of his beauty and forgot about their resolution.

लोकपालों ने देखा कि वह सूर्य के समान देदीप्यमान है। वे उसकी सुंदरता की समृद्धि पर आश्चर्यचकित हुए और अपने संकल्प के बारे में भूल गए।

ततोऽन्तरिक्षे विष्टभ्य विमानानि दिवौकसः अब्रुवन्नैषधं राजन्नवतीर्य नभस्तलात्

The gods stopped their vimāna-s in the sky and descending from the sky, addressed the king of Niṣadha,

देवताओं ने आकाश में अपने विमान रोके और आकाश से उतरकर निषध राजा को संबोधित किया,

भो भो नैषध राजेन्द्र नल सत्यव्रतो भवान् अस्माकं कुरु साहाय्यं दूतो भव नरोत्तम

"O Nālā! O Niṣadha! O Indra among kings! You are always devoted to the truth. O supreme among men! Help us and become our messenger."

"हे नाला! हे निषध! हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! आप सदैव सत्य के प्रति समर्पित रहते हैं। हे मनुष्यों में सर्वोच्च! हमारी सहायता करें और हमारे दूत बनें।"
