वैशंपायन उवाच युधिष्ठिरवचः श्रुत्वा भीमसेनपुरोगमाः प्रहृष्टवदनाः सर्वे समुत्तस्थुर्नरर्षभाः

Vaiśampāyana said: On hearing Yudhiṣṭhira's words, all the bulls among men, with Bhīmasena at the forefront, arose with happy faces.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: युधिष्ठिर के शब्दों को सुनकर, भीमसेन के साथ सभी पुरुष प्रसन्न चेहरे के साथ उठ खड़े हुए।

अभेद्यानि ततः सर्वे समनह्यन्त भारत जाम्बूनदविचित्राणि कवचानि महारथाः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! All the mahāratha-s clad themselves in impenetrable armour that was radiant with gold.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! सभी महारथी सोने से चमकने वाले अभेद्य कवच पहने हुए थे।

ते दंशिता रथैः सर्वे ध्वजिनः सशरासनाः पाण्डवाः प्रत्यदृश्यन्त ज्वलिता इव पावकाः

They ascended chariots, all of which had pennants. With bows and arrows in their hands, the Pāṇḍava-s blazed like the fire.

वे रथों पर चढ़े, जिनमें से सभी में पताकाएँ थीं। अपने हाथों में धनुष और बाण लेकर पांडव अग्नि के समान प्रज्वलित हो रहे थे।

तान्रथान्साधु संपन्नान्संयुक्ताञ्जवनैर्हयैः आस्थाय रथशार्दूलाः शीघ्रमेव ययुस्ततः

Those chariots were equipped well and were yoked to swift steeds. Using those chariots, those tigers travelled fast.

वे रथ अच्छी तरह से सुसज्जित थे और तेज़ घोड़ों से जुड़े हुए थे। उन रथों का प्रयोग करके वे बाघ तेजी से यात्रा करने लगे।

ततः कौरवसैन्यानां प्रादुरासीन्महास्वनः प्रयातान्सहितान्दृष्ट्वा पाण्डुपुत्रान्महारथान्

On seeing the mahāratha sons of Pāṇḍu advance, the army of the Kaurava-s let out a great roar.

पाण्डु के महारथी पुत्रों को आगे बढ़ता देख कौरवों की सेना ने महान् गर्जना की।

जितकाशिनश्च खचरास्त्वरिताश्च महारथाः क्षणेनैव वने तस्मिन्समाजग्मुरभीतवत्

The travellers of the sky and the mahāratha-s were not frightened and were flush with victory.

आकाश के यात्री और मराठा भयभीत नहीं थे और विजय से उत्साहित थे।

न्यवर्तन्त ततः सर्वे गन्धर्वा जितकाशिनः दृष्ट्वा रथगतान्वीरान्पाण्डवांश्चतुरो रणे

In a short while, they encountered each other in that forest. All the gāndharva-s were flush at the prospect of victory.

थोड़ी ही देर में उस जंगल में उनका आमना-सामना हो गया। सभी गंधर्व विजय की आशा से व्याकुल थे।

तांस्तु विभ्राजतो दृष्ट्वा लोकपालानिवोद्यतान् व्यूढानीका व्यतिष्ठन्त गन्धमादनवासिनः

On seeing the four brave Pāṇḍava-s advance into battle on their chariots and on seeing them as resplendent as the guardians of the worlds, the residents of Gandhamādana established themselves in battle formations.

चारों वीर पाण्डवों को अपने रथों पर युद्ध के लिए आगे बढ़ते देखकर और उन्हें संसार के संरक्षकों के समान तेजस्वी देखकर, गंधमादन के निवासियों ने स्वयं को युद्ध संरचनाओं में स्थापित कर लिया।

राज्ञस्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मराजस्य धीमतः क्रमेण मृदुना युद्धमुपक्रामन्त भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Remembering the words of the king who was Dharma's son, the first battle that was engaged was a mild one.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! धर्म के पुत्र राजा के शब्दों को याद करते हुए, जो पहला युद्ध हुआ वह हल्का था।

न तु गन्धर्वराजस्य सैनिका मन्दचेतसः शक्यन्ते मृदुना श्रेयः प्रतिपादयितुं तदा

But the soldiers of the king of the gāndharva-s were deluded in intelligence. They were incapable of realizing that something that was mild might benefit them.

लेकिन गंधर्व राजा के सैनिक बुद्धि में भ्रमित थे। वे यह महसूस करने में असमर्थ थे कि जो चीज़ हल्की थी, उससे उन्हें लाभ हो सकता है।

ततस्तान्युधि दुर्धर्षः सव्यसाची परंतपः सान्त्वपूर्वमिदं वाक्यमुवाच खचरान्रणे

At that, Savyasachi, the invincible scorcher of enemies, addressed the travellers of the skies on the field of battle.

उस समय, शत्रुओं को अजेय बनाने वाले सव्यसाची ने युद्ध के मैदान में आकाश के यात्रियों को संबोधित किया।

नैतद्गन्धर्वराजस्य युक्तं कर्म जुगुप्सितम् परदाराभिमर्शश्च मानुषैश्च समागमः

"This is not an act that is worthy of the king of the gāndharva-s, oppressing the wives of other men and consorting with humans.

"यह गन्धर्वों के राजा के योग्य कार्य नहीं है, अन्य पुरुषों की पत्नियों पर अत्याचार करना और मनुष्यों के साथ मेलजोल करना।

उत्सृजध्वं महावीर्यान्धृतराष्ट्रसुतानिमान् दारांश्चैषां विमुञ्चध्वं धर्मराजस्य शासनात्

Free the extremely brave ones, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. On the instructions of Dharmarāja, free their wives."

धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों, अत्यंत वीरों को मुक्त करो। धर्मराज के आदेश पर उनकी पत्नियों को मुक्त कर दो।"

एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वाः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना उत्स्मयन्तस्तदा पार्थमिदं वचनमब्रुवन्

On hearing the words of the famous Pāṇḍava, the gāndharva-s laughed. They replied to Pārtha in these words.

प्रसिद्ध पांडव की बातें सुनकर गन्धर्व हंस पड़े। उन्होंने पार्थ को इन शब्दों में उत्तर दिया।

एकस्यैव वयं तात कुर्याम वचनं भुवि यस्य शासनमाज्ञाय चराम विगतज्वराः

"O son! There is only one person on earth whose instructions we obey. Under his rule, we roam around, without any anxiety.

"हे पुत्र! पृथ्वी पर केवल एक ही व्यक्ति है जिसका आदेश हम मानते हैं। उसके शासन में हम बिना किसी चिंता के घूमते हैं।"

तेनैकेन यथादिष्टं तथा वर्ताम भारत न शास्ता विद्यतेऽस्माकमन्यस्तस्मात्सुरेश्वरात्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! We do only what he commands us to do. Other than that lord of the gods, there is no one else who can command us."

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हम वही करते हैं जो वह हमें करने की आज्ञा देता है। देवताओं के स्वामी के अलावा, कोई और नहीं है जो हमें आदेश दे सके।"

एवमुक्तस्तु गन्धर्वैः कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः गन्धर्वान्पुनरेवेदं वचनं प्रत्यभाषत

Having been thus addressed by the gāndharva-s, Kuntī's son, Dhanañjayā, replied to the gāndharva-s in these words.

गंधर्वों द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित किए जाने पर कुंती के पुत्र धनंजय ने गंधर्वों को इन शब्दों में उत्तर दिया।

यदि साम्ना न मोक्षध्वं गन्धर्वा धृतराष्ट्रजम् मोक्षयिष्यामि विक्रम्य स्वयमेव सुयोधनम्

"O gāndharva-s! If you do not free the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra through peaceful means, I will exhibit my valour and free Suyodhana myself."

"हे गंधर्व! यदि आप शांतिपूर्ण तरीकों से धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों को मुक्त नहीं करते हैं, तो मैं अपनी वीरता प्रदर्शित करूंगा और सुयोधन को स्वयं मुक्त करूंगा।"

एवमुक्त्वा ततः पार्थः सव्यसाची धनंजयः ससर्ज निशितान्बाणान्खचरान्खचरान्प्रति

Having uttered these words, Pārtha Savyasachi Dhanañjayā released sharp arrows, which travelled through the sky, at those roamers of the sky.

इन शब्दों को कहकर पार्थ सव्यसाची धनंजय ने आकाश में घूमने वाले उन यात्रियों पर तीखे बाण छोड़े, जो आकाश में फैल गए।

तथैव शरवर्षेण गन्धर्वास्ते बलोत्कटाः पाण्डवानभ्यवर्तन्त पाण्डवाश्च दिवौकसः

The gāndharva-s were insolent of their strength and released a shower of arrows at the Pāṇḍava-s, and the Pāṇḍava-s did the same to those residents of heaven.

गंधर्व अपनी ताकत के प्रति अभिमानी थे और उन्होंने पांडवों पर तीरों की बौछार छोड़ दी, और पांडवों ने स्वर्ग के उन निवासियों के साथ भी ऐसा ही किया।

ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं गन्धर्वाणां तरस्विनाम् बभूव भीमवेगानां पाण्डवानां च भारत

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Thus began a terrible battle between the swift gāndharva-s and the immensely swift Pāṇḍava-s.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! इस प्रकार तेज़ गंधर्वों और अत्यधिक तेज़ पांडवों के बीच भयानक युद्ध शुरू हुआ।
