अर्जुन उवाच ततोऽहं स्तूयमानस्तु तत्र तत्र महर्षिभिः अपश्यमुदधिं भीममपांपतिमथाव्ययम्

Arjuna said: "Wherever I went, I was praised by the maharṣi-s. Then I beheld the terrible ocean, the eternal lord of the waters.

अर्जुन ने कहा: "मैं जहां भी गया, महर्षियों ने मेरी प्रशंसा की। तब मैंने जल के शाश्वत स्वामी भयानक समुद्र को देखा।"

फेनवत्यः प्रकीर्णाश्च संहताश्च समुच्छ्रिताः ऊर्मयश्चात्र दृश्यन्ते चलन्त इव पर्वताः नावः सहस्रशस्तत्र रत्नपूर्णाः समन्ततः

Towering waves could be seen there, full of foam, dashing against each other and scattering, like moving mountains. There were thousands of boats, laden with gems, in every direction.

वहाँ ऊंची-ऊँची लहरें देखी जा सकती थीं, झाग से भरी हुई, एक-दूसरे से टकराती हुई और हिलते हुए पहाड़ों की तरह बिखरती हुई। हर दिशा में रत्नों से लदी हजारों नावें थीं।

तिमिंगिलाः कच्छपाश्च तथा तिमितिमिंगिलाः मकराश्चात्र दृश्यन्ते जले मग्ना इवाद्रयः

Timiṅgila-s, tortoises, whales and crocodiles could be seen, immersed in the water like mountains.

तिमिंजिला, कछुए, व्हेल और मगरमच्छ पहाड़ों की तरह पानी में डूबे हुए देखे जा सकते थे।

शङ्खानां च सहस्राणि मग्नान्यप्सु समन्ततः दृश्यन्ते स्म यथा रात्रौ तारास्तन्वभ्रसंवृताः

Thousands of conch shells could be seen in every direction, immersed in the water. They looked like stars in the night, covered by thin clouds.

हर दिशा में हजारों शंख जल में डूबे हुए दिखाई दे रहे थे। वे रात में पतले बादलों से ढके तारों की तरह लग रहे थे।

तथा सहस्रशस्तत्र रत्नसंघाः प्लवन्त्युत वायुश्च घूर्णते भीमस्तदद्भुतमिवाभवत्

Thousands of gems floated in heaps. A terrible wind whirled over this and it was extraordinary.

हजारों रत्न ढेर में तैर रहे थे। इस पर एक भयानक हवा चली और यह असाधारण था।

तमतीत्य महावेगं सर्वाम्भोनिधिमुत्तमम् अपश्यं दानवाकीर्णं तद्दैत्यपुरमन्तिकात्

I crossed over that supreme and extremely forceful storehouse of waters and drew near to the city of the daitya-s. I saw it, infested with dānava-s.

मैं जल के उस परम एवं अत्यंत बलशाली भण्डार को पार करके दैत्यों के नगर के निकट पहुँच गया। मैंने इसे दानव-एस से संक्रमित देखा।

तत्रैव मातलिस्तूर्णं निपत्य पृथिवीतले नादयन्रथघोषेण तत्पुरं समुपाद्रवत्

Mātali swiftly descended on to the ground. He drove on to the city, filling it with the roar of the chariot.

मातलि तेजी से जमीन पर उतर आया। वह रथ की गर्जना से भरता हुआ नगर की ओर चल पड़ा।

रथघोषं तु तं श्रुत्वा स्तनयित्नोरिवाम्बरे मन्वाना देवराजं मां संविग्ना दानवाभवन्

On hearing the roar of the chariot, like the sound of thunder in the sky, the dānava-s took me to be the king of the gods and were anxious.

आकाश में गड़गड़ाहट के समान रथ की गर्जना सुनकर दानवों ने मुझे देवताओं का राजा समझ लिया और चिंतित हो गये।

सर्वे संभ्रान्तमनसः शरचापधराः स्थिताः तथा शूलासिपरशुगदामुसलपाणयः

Their minds trembled. All of them stood there, holding arrows and bows, spears, swords, battleaxes, clubs and maces in their hands.

उनके मन कांप उठे. वे सभी अपने हाथों में तीर-धनुष, भाले, तलवारें, फरसे, लाठियाँ और गदाएँ लिये वहाँ खड़े थे।

ततो द्वाराणि पिदधुर्दानवास्त्रस्तचेतसः संविधाय पुरे रक्षां न स्म कश्चन दृश्यते

Their minds trembling with fear, the dānava-s closed the gates. They arranged for the protection of the city and nothing could be seen.

भय से कांपते हुए दानवों ने द्वार बंद कर लिये। उन्होंने नगर की सुरक्षा की व्यवस्था की और कुछ भी दिखाई न पड़े।

ततः शङ्खमुपादाय देवदत्तं महास्वनम् पुरमासुरमाश्लिष्य प्राधमं तं शनैरहम्

I took out the conch shell Devadatta, whose sound is great. Circling around the city of the āsura-s, I blew gently on it.

मैंने देवदत्त शंख निकाला, जिसकी ध्वनि महान है। मैंने असुरों के नगर के चारों ओर चक्कर लगाते हुए धीरे से उस पर फूंक मारी।

स तु शब्दो दिवं स्तब्ध्वा प्रतिशब्दमजीजनत् वित्रेसुश्च निलिल्युश्च भूतानि सुमहान्त्यपि

That sound echoed everywhere and seemed to stupefy the sky. On hearing this, the immensely mighty beings trembled and hid themselves.

वह ध्वनि हर जगह गूँज उठी और ऐसा लगा जैसे आकाश स्तब्ध हो गया हो। यह सुनकर अत्यंत शक्तिशाली प्राणी कांप उठे और छिप गए।

ततो निवातकवचाः सर्व एव समन्ततः दंशिता विविधैस्त्राणैर्विविधायुधपाणयः

Then all the nivātakavaca-s, Diti's sons, appeared everywhere. They were clad in different kinds of armour and had many different weapons in their hands.

तब सभी निवातकवच, दिति के पुत्र, हर जगह प्रकट हुए। वे विभिन्न प्रकार के कवच पहने हुए थे और उनके हाथों में कई अलग-अलग हथियार थे।

आयसैश्च महाशूलैर्गदाभिर्मुसलैरपि पट्टिशैः करवालैश्च रथचक्रैश्च भारत

There were gigantic iron lances, clubs, maces, spears and the wheels of chariots in their hands.

उनके हाथों में लोहे के विशाल भाले, लाठियाँ, गदाएँ, भाले तथा रथों के पहिये थे।

शतघ्नीभिर्भुशुण्डीभिः खड्गैश्चित्रैः स्वलंकृतैः प्रगृहीतैर्दितेः पुत्राः प्रादुरासन्सहस्रशः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! There were śataghnī-s, catapults and brilliantly ornamented swords.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वहां शतघ्नी, गुलेल और शानदार ढंग से सजाई गई तलवारें थीं।

ततो विचार्य बहुधा रथमार्गेषु तान्हयान् प्राचोदयत्समे देशे मातलिर्भरतर्षभ

O bull among the Bhārata lineage! Then, thinking about the route the chariot should take, Mātali drove the horses along level ground.

हे भरत वंश में बैल! फिर, रथ को कौन सा मार्ग लेना चाहिए, इसके बारे में सोचते हुए, मातलि ने घोड़ों को समतल भूमि पर चलाया।

तेन तेषां प्रणुन्नानामाशुत्वाच्छीघ्रगामिनाम् नान्वपश्यं तदा किंचित्तन्मेऽद्भुतमिवाभवत्

Because of the swift speed that he made the horses adopt, I could see nothing and it seemed to me to be extraordinary.

उसने घोड़ों को जो तेज़ गति दी, उसके कारण मैं कुछ भी नहीं देख सका और मुझे यह असाधारण लगा।

ततस्ते दानवास्तत्र योधव्रातान्यनेकशः विकृतस्वररूपाणि भृशं सर्वाण्यचोदयन्

Then the many martial dānava-s adopted distorted voices and shapes.

फिर कई मार्शल दानवों ने विकृत आवाजें और आकार अपनाए।

तेन शब्देन महता समुद्रे पर्वतोपमाः आप्लवन्त गतैः सत्त्वैर्मत्स्याः शतसहस्रशः

That great sound made hundreds and thousands of fishes die, suddenly floating up in the sky, like mountains.

उस महान ध्वनि से सैकड़ों और हजारों मछलियाँ मर गईं, जो अचानक पहाड़ों की तरह आकाश में तैरने लगीं।

ततो वेगेन महता दानवा मामुपाद्रवन् विमुञ्चन्तः शितान्बाणाञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

With great force, the dānava-s rushed towards me. They discharged hundreds and thousands of sharp arrows.

बड़ी ताकत से दानव मेरी ओर दौड़े। उन्होंने सैकड़ों और हजारों तीखे बाण छोड़े।

स संप्रहारस्तुमुलस्तेषां मम च भारत अवर्तत महाघोरो निवातकवचान्तकः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! For the sake of the death of the nivātakavaca-s, a great and terrible fight occurred between them and me.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! निवातकवच-स की मृत्यु के लिए, उनके और मेरे बीच एक महान और भयानक लड़ाई हुई।

ततो देवर्षयश्चैव दानवर्षिगणाश्च ये ब्रह्मर्षयश्च सिद्धाश्च समाजग्मुर्महामृधे

Devarṣi-s, masses of riṣi-s among the dānava-s, brahmarṣi-s and siddha-s assembled to witness that great battle.

देवर्षि, दानव, ब्रह्मर्षि और सिद्धों के बीच बड़ी संख्या में ऋषि उस महान युद्ध को देखने के लिए एकत्रित हुए।

ते वै मामनुरूपाभिर्मधुराभिर्जयैषिणः अस्तुवन्मुनयो वाग्भिर्यथेन्द्रं तारकामये

Hoping for victory, the hermits praised me with eloquent and sweet voices, just as they praised Indra at the time of tārakāmaya."

विजय की आशा से तपस्वियों ने मधुर और मधुर वाणी से मेरी स्तुति की, जैसे उन्होंने तारकामय के समय इन्द्र की स्तुति की थी।"
