Janamejaya said: "He has been prone to evil from his birth, coveting the riches of others and confounded by avarice. He acts in ways that are not like those of an āryā and is determined to bring about his own death.
जनमेजय ने कहा: "वह अपने जन्म से ही बुराई की ओर प्रवृत्त रहा है, दूसरों के धन का लालच करता है और लोभ से भ्रमित है। वह ऐसे तरीकों से कार्य करता है जो एक आर्य के समान नहीं हैं और अपनी मृत्यु लाने के लिए दृढ़ हैं।
He is the cause of grief to his kin and relatives and increases their misery. He causes difficulties for his well-wishers and increases the delight of his enemies.
वह अपने सगे-संबंधियों के लिए दुःख का कारण बनता है और उनके दुःख को बढ़ाता है। वह अपने शुभचिंतकों के लिए कठिनाइयाँ पैदा करता है और अपने शत्रुओं की ख़ुशी बढ़ाता है।

सौहृदाद्वा सुहृत्स्निग्धो भगवान्वा पितामहः
Why did his relatives and well-wishers not restrain him from this deviant path? Out of friendship and affection, why did the illustrious one and the grandfather not stop him?"
उनके रिश्तेदारों और शुभचिंतकों ने उन्हें इस पथभ्रष्ट मार्ग से क्यों नहीं रोका? दोस्ती और स्नेह के कारण, उस प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्ति और दादाजी ने उसे क्यों नहीं रोका?"
Vaiśampāyana said: The illustrious one spoke appropriate words and so did Bhīṣma. Nārada also said many things. Listen to them.

Nārada said: "Rare is a well-wisher who listens. Rare is a well-wisher who offers beneficial advice. Where there is a well-wisher, there is no friend.
नारद ने कहा: "दुर्लभ वह शुभचिंतक होता है जो सुनता है। दुर्लभ वह शुभचिंतक होता है जो लाभकारी सलाह देता है। जहां शुभचिंतक होता है, वहां कोई मित्र नहीं होता।"

न कर्तव्यश्च निर्बन्धो निर्बन्धो हि सुदारुणः
O descendant of the Kuru lineage! I think that your well-wishers should be heard. One should not stick to obstinacy. Stubbornness is extremely terrible.
हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! मुझे लगता है कि आपके शुभचिंतकों की बात सुनी जानी चाहिए. किसी को भी जिद पर अड़े नहीं रहना चाहिए. जिद अत्यंत भयानक होती है.

In ancient times, Dharma sought to test Viśvāmitrā's austerities. He went to him himself, adopting the form of the illustrious riṣi Vāsiṣṭha.

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! O king! Having adopted the form of one of the saptarṣi-s, he went to Kauṣika's hermitage, as if he was hungry and wished to satisfy his hunger.
हे भरत वंश के वंशज! हे राजा! सप्तर्षियों में से एक का रूप धारण करके, वह कौशिक के आश्रम में गया, जैसे कि वह भूखा हो और अपनी भूख मिटाना चाहता हो।

With reverence, Viśvāmitrā cooked some cāru. Because of the extreme care he took on this, he could not attend to him in other ways.
श्रद्धापूर्वक विश्वामित्र ने कुछ चारु पकाये। इस पर अत्यधिक सावधानी बरतने के कारण, वह अन्य तरीकों से उसकी देखभाल नहीं कर सका।
Because of his devotion, he grasped the food with his two hands and placing it on his head, stood nearby. He stood immobile like a pillar, subsisting only on air.
अपनी भक्ति के कारण उसने भोजन को दोनों हाथों से पकड़ लिया और सिर पर रखकर पास ही खड़ा हो गया। वह एक खंभे की तरह स्थिर खड़ा था, केवल हवा पर निर्भर था।
Because of Dharma's words, Viśvāmitrā was delighted and giving up the state of a kṣatriya, assumed the state of a brāhmaṇa.
धर्म के वचनों से विश्वामित्र प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने क्षत्रिय का राज्य छोड़कर ब्राह्मण का राज्य धारण कर लिया।

शुश्रूषया च भक्त्या च प्रीतिमानित्युवाच तम्
अनुज्ञातो मया वत्स यथेष्टं गच्छ गालव
Viśvāmitrā was pleased at the service and devotion of his disciple, the ascetic Gālava, and said, "O son! O Gālava! You have my permission to go wherever you desire."
विश्वामित्र अपने शिष्य तपस्वी गालव की सेवा और भक्ति से प्रसन्न हुए और कहा, "हे पुत्र! हे गालव! तुम जहां चाहो वहां जाने के लिए तुम्हें मेरी अनुमति है।"
When dakṣiṇa has been paid, virtuous ones are freed from their debts. Dakṣiṇa is the fruit of a sacrifice, obtained in heaven, and is therefore said to constitute peace. O illustrious one! Tell me. What will I give my preceptor?"
जब दक्षिणा चुका दी जाती है, तो पुण्यात्मा लोग अपने ऋण से मुक्त हो जाते हैं। दक्षिणा यज्ञ का फल है, जो स्वर्ग में प्राप्त होता है, और इसलिए इसे शांति माना जाता है। हे महामहिम! मुझे बताओ। मैं अपने गुरु को क्या दूँगा?"

The illustrious Viśvāmitrā knew that he had already been honoured by his service and repeatedly asked him to go away.
यशस्वी विश्वामित्र जानते थे कि उनकी सेवा से उन्हें पहले ही सम्मानित किया जा चुका है और उन्होंने बार-बार उन्हें चले जाने के लिए कहा।
