वैशंपायन उवाच ततः प्रहस्य दाशार्हः क्रोधपर्याकुलेक्षणः दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि

Vaiśampāyana said: Dāśārha's eyes showed his anger. In the assembly of Kuru-s, he laughed and spoke these words to Duryodhana.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: दशार्ह की आँखों से उसका क्रोध झलक रहा था। कुरु-सभा में उन्होंने हँसते हुए दुर्योधन से ये बातें कहीं।

लप्स्यसे वीरशयनं काममेतदवाप्स्यसि स्थिरो भव सहामात्यो विमर्दो भविता महान्

"You wish to obtain the bed of a warrior and your desire will be fulfilled. Station yourself with your advisers and there will be a great destruction.

"तुम एक योद्धा का बिस्तर प्राप्त करना चाहते हो और तुम्हारी इच्छा पूरी हो जाएगी। अपने सलाहकारों के साथ खड़े हो जाओ और एक बड़ा विनाश होगा।

यच्चैवं मन्यसे मूढ न मे कश्चिद्व्यतिक्रमः पाण्डवेष्विति तत्सर्वं निबोधत नराधिपाः

O foolish one! You think that there is nothing reprehensible in your conduct towards the Pāṇḍava-s. Let all the lords of men listen.

अरे मूर्ख! आप सोचते हैं कि पांडवों के प्रति आपके आचरण में कुछ भी निंदनीय नहीं है। मनुष्यों के सब प्रभु सुनें।

श्रिया संतप्यमानेन पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् त्वया दुर्मन्त्रितं द्यूतं सौबलेन च भारत

You were tormented with the prosperity of the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! You plotted a gambling match with Saubala.

आप महात्मा पाण्डवों की समृद्धि से त्रस्त थे। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! आपने सौबाला के साथ जुए की साजिश रची।

कथं च ज्ञातयस्तात श्रेयांसः साधुसंमताः तथान्याय्यमुपस्थातुं जिह्मेनाजिह्मचारिणः

O son! Your relatives are superior and are honoured by virtuous ones. They are not crooked in their conduct. How could they engage in a deceitful act with that deceitful one?

हे वत्स आपके रिश्तेदार श्रेष्ठ हैं और गुणी लोगों द्वारा सम्मानित होते हैं। वे अपने आचरण में कुटिल नहीं हैं. वे उस धोखेबाज के साथ कपटपूर्ण कार्य में कैसे संलग्न हो सकते हैं?

अक्षद्यूतं महाप्राज्ञ सतामरतिनाशनम् असतां तत्र जायन्ते भेदाश्च व्यसनानि च

O immensely wise one! Gambling with the dice destroys the joy of the virtuous. Among those who are not virtuous, it creates dissension and difficulties.

हे अत्यंत बुद्धिमान! पासों से जुआ खेलने से सज्जनों का आनंद नष्ट हो जाता है। जो लोग सदाचारी नहीं हैं, उनमें यह कलह और कठिनाइयाँ पैदा करता है।

तदिदं व्यसनं घोरं त्वया द्यूतमुखं कृतम् असमीक्ष्य सदाचारैः सार्धं पापानुबन्धनैः

It was you who started this terrible and wicked gambling match with your wicked relatives, ignoring the norms of good conduct.

यह आप ही थे जिन्होंने अच्छे आचरण के मानदंडों की अनदेखी करते हुए अपने दुष्ट रिश्तेदारों के साथ इस भयानक और दुष्ट जुआ मैच की शुरुआत की थी।

कश्चान्यो ज्ञातिभार्यां वै विप्रकर्तुं तथार्हति आनीय च सभां वक्तुं यथोक्ता द्रौपदी त्वया

Who else but you could have treated the wife of a relative in that way, bringing Draupadī to the assembly hall and speaking to her in that way?

आपके अलावा और कौन अपने रिश्तेदार की पत्नी के साथ इस तरह का व्यवहार कर सकता था, द्रौपदी को सभा भवन में लाकर उससे इस तरह से बात कर सकता था?

कुलीना शीलसंपन्ना प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी महिषी पाण्डुपुत्राणां तथा विनिकृता त्वया

She has been born in noble lineage. She possesses good conduct. She is dearer to them than their lives. You maltreated that queen of the sons of Pāṇḍu.

उनका जन्म कुलीन वंश में हुआ है। वह अच्छा आचरण रखती है. वह उन्हें अपनी जान से भी ज्यादा प्यारी है. तुमने पाण्डु पुत्रों की उस रानी के साथ दुर्व्यवहार किया।

जानन्ति कुरवः सर्वे यथोक्ताः कुरुसंसदि दुःशासनेन कौन्तेयाः प्रव्रजन्तः परंतपाः

All the Kuru-s know how Duḥśāsana addressed the Kaunteya-s, the scorchers of enemies, in the assembly of the Kuru-s, when they were being exiled.

सभी कुरु-वासी जानते हैं कि दुःशासन ने कुरु-सभा में, जब उन्हें निर्वासित किया जा रहा था, शत्रुओं को जलाने वाले कौन्तेय-स को कैसे संबोधित किया था।

सम्यग्वृत्तेष्वलुब्धेषु सततं धर्मचारिषु स्वेषु बन्धुषु कः साधुश्चरेदेवमसांप्रतम्

They have followed righteous conduct. They have been devoid of greed. They have always acted in accordance with dharma. Which virtuous man will act towards his relatives, in this contemptible way?

उन्होंने धर्माचरण का पालन किया है। वे लालच से रहित हो गए हैं। उन्होंने सदैव धर्म के अनुसार कार्य किया है। कौन धर्मात्मा मनुष्य अपने सम्बन्धियों के प्रति इस प्रकार घृणित व्यवहार करेगा?

नृशंसानामनार्याणां परुषाणां च भाषणम् कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च त्वया च बहुशः कृतम्

Karṇa, Duḥśāsana and you repeatedly used harsh words that are used by those who are violent and are not āryā-s.

कर्ण, दु:शासन और तुमने बार-बार कठोर शब्दों का प्रयोग किया जिनका प्रयोग वे लोग करते हैं जो हिंसक हैं और आर्य नहीं हैं।

सह मात्रा प्रदग्धुं तान्बालकान्वारणावते आस्थितः परमं यत्नं न समृद्धं च तत्तव

When they were children, together with their mother, you made great efforts to burn them up in Vāraṇāvata. But you were unsuccessful.

जब वे बालक थे तो आपने उनकी माता के साथ मिलकर उन्हें वारणावत में जलाने का बड़ा प्रयत्न किया था। लेकिन आप असफल रहे.

ऊषुश्च सुचिरं कालं प्रच्छन्नाः पाण्डवास्तदा मात्रा सहैकचक्रायां ब्राह्मणस्य निवेशने

At that time, the Pāṇḍava-s and their mother lived for a long time in concealment in Ekacakrā, in a brāhmaṇa's house.

उस समय, पांडव-और उनकी मां लंबे समय तक एकचक्रा में, एक ब्राह्मण के घर में छिपकर रहे थे।

विषेण सर्पबन्धैश्च यतिताः पाण्डवास्त्वया सर्वोपायैर्विनाशाय न समृद्धं च तत्तव

Through poison, through the bonds of snakes, you made every effort to destroy the Pāṇḍava-s. But you were unsuccessful.

विष के माध्यम से, साँपों के बंधन के माध्यम से, आपने पांडवों को नष्ट करने का हर संभव प्रयास किया। लेकिन आप असफल रहे.

एवंबुद्धिः पाण्डवेषु मिथ्यावृत्तिः सदा भवान् कथं ते नापराधोऽस्ति पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु

This was your inclination towards the Pāṇḍava-s. You were always devoted to falsehood. How have you not commited a crime towards the great-souled Pāṇḍava-s?

यह आपका झुकाव पांडवों की ओर था। आप सदैव असत्य के प्रति समर्पित रहे। आपने महात्मा पाण्डवों के प्रति अपराध कैसे नहीं किया?

कृत्वा बहून्यकार्याणि पाण्डवेषु नृशंसवत् मिथ्यावृत्तिरनार्यः सन्नद्य विप्रतिपद्यसे

You have committed many such cruel deeds towards the Pāṇḍava-s. You have resorted to false conduct, like one who is not an āryā.

तुमने पांडवों के प्रति ऐसे अनेक क्रूर कर्म किये हैं। तुमने असत्य आचरण का सहारा लिया है, जैसे कोई आर्य नहीं है।

मातापितृभ्यां भीष्मेण द्रोणेन विदुरेण च शाम्येति मुहुरुक्तोऽसि न च शाम्यसि पार्थिव

You are now against everyone. Your mother and father, Bhīṣma, Droṇa and Vidūra have all told you that you should make peace. O king! But you do not desire peace.

अब आप सबके खिलाफ हैं. आपके माता-पिता, भीष्म, द्रोण और विदुर सभी ने आपसे कहा है कि आपको शांति बना लेनी चाहिए। हे राजा! परन्तु तुम शान्ति नहीं चाहते।

शमे हि सुमहानर्थस्तव पार्थस्य चोभयोः न च रोचयसे राजन्किमन्यद्बुद्धिलाघवात्

There is great benefit to both you and Pārtha in peace. O king! But because of the feebleness of your intelligence, this does not appeal to you.

शान्ति से तुम्हें और पार्थ दोनों को बड़ा लाभ है। हे राजा! परन्तु तुम्हारी बुद्धि की दुर्बलता के कारण यह बात तुम्हें अच्छी नहीं लगती।

न शर्म प्राप्स्यसे राजन्नुत्क्रम्य सुहृदां वचः अधर्म्यमयशस्यं च क्रियते पार्थिव त्वया

O king! But going against the advice of your well-wishers, you will not obtain salvation. O lord of the earth! You are acting against dharma and against fame."

हे राजा! लेकिन अपने शुभचिंतकों की सलाह के विरुद्ध जाने से आपको मुक्ति नहीं मिलेगी। हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! आप धर्म और प्रसिद्धि के विरुद्ध कार्य कर रहे हैं।”

एवं ब्रुवति दाशार्हे दुर्योधनममर्षणम् दुःशासन इदं वाक्यमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि

Dāśārha was speaking to the intolerant Duryodhana in this way. Duḥśāsana then spoke these words in that assembly of the Kuru-s.

दशार्ह असहिष्णु दुर्योधन से इस प्रकार बोल रहे थे। तब दुःशासन ने कुरु-सभा में ये शब्द कहे।

न चेत्संधास्यसे राजन्स्वेन कामेन पाण्डवैः बद्ध्वा किल त्वां दास्यन्ति कुन्तीपुत्राय कौरवाः

"O king! It seems that if you do not have an alliance with the Pāṇḍava-s on your own volition, the Kaurava-s will tie us up and hand us over to Kuntī's son.

"हे राजा! ऐसा लगता है कि यदि आप अपनी इच्छा से पांडवों के साथ संधि नहीं करेंगे, तो कौरव हमें बाँध देंगे और कुंती के पुत्र को सौंप देंगे।

वैकर्तनं त्वां च मां च त्रीनेतान्मनुजर्षभ पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रदास्यन्ति भीष्मो द्रोणः पिता च ते

O bull among men! Bhīṣma, Droṇa and your father will give the three of us—you, Vaikartaṇa and I—to the Pāṇḍava-s."

हे मनुष्यों में बैल! भीष्म, द्रोण और तुम्हारे पिता हम तीनों - तुम, वैकर्तन और मैं - को पांडवों को दे देंगे।"

भ्रातुरेतद्वचः श्रुत्वा धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः क्रुद्धः प्रातिष्ठतोत्थाय महानाग इव श्वसन्

On hearing his brother's words, Suyodhana, Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, arose in rage, hissing like a giant serpent.

अपने भाई की बातें सुनकर धृतराष्ट्र का पुत्र सुयोधन क्रोध में आकर विशाल सर्प की भाँति फुँफकारने लगा।

विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् कृपं च सोमदत्तं च भीष्मं द्रोणं जनार्दनम्

That evil-minded one paid no attention to anyone—Vidūra, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the great king Bahlika, Kṛpa, Bhīṣma, Droṇa or Janārdana.

उस दुष्टबुद्धि ने किसी पर भी ध्यान नहीं दिया - विदुर, धृतराष्ट्र, महान राजा बाह्लीक, कृपा, भीष्म, द्रोण या जनार्दन।

सर्वानेताननादृत्य दुर्मतिर्निरपत्रपः अशिष्टवदमर्यादो मानी मान्यावमानिता

Insulting those who deserve to be honoured, the uncontrolled, wicked and shameless one departed.

जो सम्मान के पात्र हैं उनका अपमान करके अनियंत्रित, दुष्ट और निर्लज्ज व्यक्ति चला गया।

तं प्रस्थितमभिप्रेक्ष्य भ्रातरो मनुजर्षभम् अनुजग्मुः सहामात्या राजानश्चापि सर्वशः

Having seen that bull among men leave, all his brothers, advisers and all the kings followed him.

मनुष्यों में उस बैल को जाते देखकर उसके सभी भाई, सलाहकार और सभी राजा उसके पीछे हो लिये।

सभायामुत्थितं क्रुद्धं प्रस्थितं भ्रातृभिः सह दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य भीष्मः शांतनवोऽब्रवीत्

On seeing Duryodhana angrily rise and leave the assembly hall, together with his brothers, Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, said,

दुर्योधन को क्रोधपूर्वक उठकर अपने भाइयों सहित सभा भवन से बाहर निकलते देख शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म ने कहा,

धर्मार्थावभिसंत्यज्य संरम्भं योऽनुमन्यते हसन्ति व्यसने तस्य दुर्हृदो नचिरादिव

"He who is overcome by anger and acts against dharma and artha, will soon be laughed at by his ill-wishers, when he is in difficulties.

"जो क्रोध के वशीभूत होकर धर्म और अर्थ के विरुद्ध कार्य करता है, जब वह संकट में होता है तो शीघ्र ही उसके शुभचिंतक उसका उपहास करते हैं।

दुरात्मा राजपुत्रोऽयं धार्तराष्ट्रोऽनुपायवित् मिथ्याभिमानी राज्यस्य क्रोधलोभवशानुगः

This evil-minded son of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra does not know what is right. He suffers from false pride because of the kingdom. He is under the power of anger and avarice.

राजा धृतराष्ट्र का यह दुष्ट मन वाला पुत्र नहीं जानता कि सही क्या है। वह राज्य के कारण मिथ्या अभिमान से ग्रस्त रहता है। वह क्रोध और लोभ के वश में है।

कालपक्वमिदं मन्ये सर्वक्षत्रं जनार्दन सर्वे ह्यनुसृता मोहात्पार्थिवाः सह मन्त्रिभिः

O Janārdana! I think the time has come for all the kṣatriya-s to be cooked by destiny, because in their delusion, all the kings and their advisers are following him."

हे जनार्दन! मैं सोचता हूं कि अब समय आ गया है कि सभी क्षत्रिय नियति के हाथों पक जाएं, क्योंकि उनके भ्रम में सभी राजा और उनके सलाहकार उनका अनुसरण कर रहे हैं।"

भीष्मस्याथ वचः श्रुत्वा दाशार्हः पुष्करेक्षणः भीष्मद्रोणमुखान्सर्वानभ्यभाषत वीर्यवान्

The valiant and lotus-eyed Dāśārha heard Bhīṣma's words and told Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the others who were there.

वीर और कमल-नेत्र दशार्ह ने भीष्म की बातें सुनीं और भीष्म, द्रोण तथा वहां मौजूद अन्य सभी लोगों को बताया।

सर्वेषां कुरुवृद्धानां महानयमतिक्रमः प्रसह्य मन्दमैश्वर्ये न नियच्छत यन्नृपम्

"This is the supreme taint of all the elders among the Kuru-s, that they are not forcibly restraining this evil-minded king who is misusing his prosperity.

"यह कुरुवंश के सभी वरिष्ठों का सर्वोच्च कलंक है कि वे अपनी समृद्धि का दुरुपयोग करने वाले इस दुष्ट दिमाग वाले राजा को बलपूर्वक नहीं रोक रहे हैं।

तत्र कार्यमहं मन्ये प्राप्तकालमरिंदमाः क्रियमाणे भवेच्छ्रेयस्तत्सर्वं शृणुतानघाः

O destroyers of enemies! I think the time has come to act in this way. O unblemished ones! Listen to me. If that is done, everything may still be well.

हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! मुझे लगता है कि इस तरह से काम करने का समय आ गया है.' हे निष्कलंक! मेरी बात सुनो। यदि ऐसा किया जाए तो सब कुछ अभी भी ठीक हो सकता है।

प्रत्यक्षमेतद्भवतां यद्वक्ष्यामि हितं वचः भवतामानुकूल्येन यदि रोचेत भारताः

Reflect on my words, which are for your welfare. O descendants of the Bhārata lineage! See if they appeal to you as conducive to your welfare.

मेरे वचनों पर विचार करो, जो तुम्हारे कल्याण के लिए हैं। हे भरत वंश के वंशजों! देखें कि क्या वे आपके कल्याण के लिए अनुकूल हैं।

भोजराजस्य वृद्धस्य दुराचारो ह्यनात्मवान् जीवतः पितुरैश्वर्यं हृत्वा मन्युवशं गतः

While the aged king of Bhojā was still alive, his evil-minded and selfish son, overcome by anger, seized his father's riches.

जब भोज के वृद्ध राजा अभी भी जीवित थे, उनके दुष्ट दिमाग और स्वार्थी पुत्र ने क्रोध से वशीभूत होकर अपने पिता की संपत्ति पर कब्ज़ा कर लिया।

उग्रसेनसुतः कंसः परित्यक्तः स बान्धवैः ज्ञातीनां हितकामेन मया शस्तो महामृधे

Kaṃsa, Ugrasena's son, was abandoned by his relatives. For the welfare of his relatives, I punished him in a great battle.

उग्रसेन के पुत्र कंस को उसके रिश्तेदारों ने त्याग दिया था। उसके परिजनों की भलाई के लिए मैंने उसे एक महान युद्ध में दंडित किया।

आहुकः पुनरस्माभिर्ज्ञातिभिश्चापि सत्कृतः उग्रसेनः कृतो राजा भोजराजन्यवर्धनः

The other relatives and I then honoured and instated Āhuka's son, Ugrasena, as the king again and thereby extended the kingdom of the Bhojā-s.

तब अन्य रिश्तेदारों और मैंने आहुक के पुत्र उग्रसेन को सम्मानित किया और उन्हें फिर से राजा बनाया और इस तरह भोज के राज्य का विस्तार किया।

कंसमेकं परित्यज्य कुलार्थे सर्वयादवाः संभूय सुखमेधन्ते भारतान्धकवृष्णयः

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! For the sake of the lineage, all the Bhojā-s, Andhaka-s and Vṛṣṇi-s abandoned the solitary Kaṃsa and lived in happiness.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! वंश की खातिर, सभी भोज, अंधक और वृष्णि ने एकान्त कंस को त्याग दिया और खुशी से रहने लगे।

अपि चाप्यवदद्राजन्परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः व्यूढे देवासुरे युद्धेऽभ्युद्यतेष्वायुधेषु च

O king! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Parameṣṭhi Prajāpati had said, when the gods and the āsura-s were arrayed in battle formations, with their weapons raised,

हे राजा! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! परमेष्ठी प्रजापति ने कहा था, जब देवता और असुर अपने हथियार उठाए हुए युद्ध संरचनाओं में एकत्रित थे,

द्वैधीभूतेषु लोकेषु विनश्यत्सु च भारत अब्रवीत्सृष्टिमान्देवो भगवाँल्लोकभावनः

and the world was divided into two sides and was about to be destroyed, the creator, the revered one, the sustainer spoke

और संसार दो पक्षों में विभाजित हो गया और नष्ट होने वाला था, स्रष्टा, पूजनीय, पालनकर्ता बोला

पराभविष्यन्त्यसुरा दैतेया दानवैः सह आदित्या वसवो रुद्रा भविष्यन्ति दिवौकसः

"The āsura-s, together with the daitya-s and the dānava-s, will be defeated. The Āditya-s, the Vasu-s and the Rudra-s will dwell in heaven.

"दैत्यों और दानवों सहित असुर पराजित हो जाएंगे। आदित्य, वसु और रुद्र स्वर्ग में निवास करेंगे।

देवासुरमनुष्याश्च गन्धर्वोरगराक्षसाः अस्मिन्युद्धे सुसंयत्ता हनिष्यन्ति परस्परम्

In this battle, the gods, the āsura-s, men, gāndharva-s, serpents and rākṣasa-s will angrily kill one another."

इस युद्ध में देवता, असुर, मनुष्य, गंधर्व, नाग और राक्षस क्रोधपूर्वक एक दूसरे को मार डालेंगे।"

इति मत्वाब्रवीद्धर्मं परमेष्ठी प्रजापतिः वरुणाय प्रयच्छैतान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान्

Thinking this, Parameṣṭhi Prajāpati told Dharma, "Bind the daitya-s and the dānava-s and give them to Vāruṇa."

यह सोचकर परमेष्ठि प्रजापति ने धर्म से कहा, "दैत्यों और दानवों को बाँधो और उन्हें वरुण को दे दो।"

एवमुक्तस्ततो धर्मो नियोगात्परमेष्ठिनः वरुणाय ददौ सर्वान्बद्ध्वा दैतेयदानवान्

Having been thus addressed and instructed by Parameṣṭhi, Dharma bound the daitya-s and the dānava-s and handed them over to Vāruṇa.

परमेष्ठी द्वारा इस प्रकार संबोधित और निर्देशित किये जाने पर, धर्म ने दैत्यों और दानवों को बाँध दिया और उन्हें वरुण को सौंप दिया।

तान्बद्ध्वा धर्मपाशैश्च स्वैश्च पाशैर्जलेश्वरः वरुणः सागरे यत्तो नित्यं रक्षति दानवान्

Having bound them with Dharma's nooses and with his own nooses, Vāruṇa, lord of the waters, has since then always carefully confined the dānava-s to the ocean.

उन्हें धर्म के पाशों और अपने पाशों से बाँधकर, जल के स्वामी वरुण ने तब से दानवों को हमेशा सावधानीपूर्वक समुद्र तक ही सीमित रखा है।

तथा दुर्योधनं कर्णं शकुनिं चापि सौबलम् बद्ध्वा दुःशासनं चापि पाण्डवेभ्यः प्रयच्छत

In the same way, fetter Duryodhana, Karṇa, Śākuni Saubala and Duḥśāsana and hand them over to the Pāṇḍava-s.

इसी प्रकार दुर्योधन, कर्ण, शकुनि सौबल और दुःशासन को पकड़कर पांडवों को सौंप दो।

त्यजेत्कुलार्थे पुरुषं ग्रामस्यार्थे कुलं त्यजेत् ग्रामं जनपदस्यार्थे आत्मार्थे पृथिवीं त्यजेत्

A man should be abandoned for the sake of a lineage. A lineage should be abandoned for the sake of a village. A village should be abandoned for the sake of a country. The earth should be abandoned for the sake of the soul.

वंश के लिए मनुष्य को त्याग देना चाहिए। एक गाँव के लिए एक वंश का त्याग कर देना चाहिए। देश के लिए गांव का त्याग कर देना चाहिए। आत्मा के लिए पृथ्वी का त्याग कर देना चाहिए।

राजन्दुर्योधनं बद्ध्वा ततः संशाम्य पाण्डवैः त्वत्कृते न विनश्येयुः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभ

O king! O bull among the kṣatriya-s! If you bind up Duryodhana and make peace with the Pāṇḍava-s, the kṣatriya-s will not be destroyed for your sake."

हे राजा! हे क्षत्रियों में से बैल! यदि आप दुर्योधन को बांध लेते हैं और पांडवों के साथ शांति स्थापित कर लेते हैं, तो क्षत्रिय आपके कारण नष्ट नहीं होंगे।"
