भीष्म उवाच ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे तपसे धृतनिश्चयाम् दृष्ट्वा न्यवर्तयंस्तात किं कार्यमिति चाब्रुवन्

Bhīṣma said: All the ascetics saw that she was firm in her resolution to perform austerities. O son! They tried to stop her and asked, "What do you wish to accomplish?"

भीष्म ने कहा: सभी तपस्वियों ने देखा कि वह तपस्या करने के अपने संकल्प पर दृढ़ थी। हे वत्स उन्होंने उसे रोकने की कोशिश की और पूछा, "तुम क्या हासिल करना चाहते हो?"

तानुवाच ततः कन्या तपोवृद्धानृषींस्तदा निराकृतास्मि भीष्मेण भ्रंशिता पतिधर्मतः

The riṣi-s were aged in their austerities and the maiden replied to them, "I have been abandoned by Bhīṣma and have been dislodged from the dharma I would have obtained through a husband.

ऋषि अपनी तपस्या में वृद्ध हो गए थे और युवती ने उन्हें उत्तर दिया, "मुझे भीष्म ने त्याग दिया है और मैं उस धर्म से बेदखल हो गई हूं जो मुझे एक पति के माध्यम से प्राप्त होता।

वधार्थं तस्य दीक्षा मे न लोकार्थं तपोधनाः निहत्य भीष्मं गच्छेयं शान्तिमित्येव निश्चयः

O ones rich in austerities! I have consecrated myself for his death and not for the sake of any world. I have resolved that I will achieve peace only through Bhīṣma's death.

हे तपश्चर्या के धनी! मैंने स्वयं को उसकी मृत्यु के लिए समर्पित कर दिया है, किसी दुनिया के लिए नहीं। मैंने निश्चय कर लिया है कि भीष्म की मृत्यु से ही मुझे शांति मिलेगी।

यत्कृते दुःखवसतिमिमां प्राप्तास्मि शाश्वतीम् पतिलोकाद्विहीना च नैव स्त्री न पुमानिह

It is because of his deeds that I have obtained this eternal and infinite misery. I have been deprived of the world of a husband. I am neither a woman, nor a man.

उन्हीं के कर्मों के कारण मुझे यह अनादि और अनन्त दुःख प्राप्त हुआ है। मैं पति के संसार से वंचित हो गयी हूं. मैं न तो महिला हूं और न ही पुरुष.

नाहत्वा युधि गाङ्गेयं निवर्तेयं तपोधनाः एष मे हृदि संकल्पो यदर्थमिदमुद्यतम्

O ones rich in austerities! I will not desist until I have slain Gāṅgeya in battle. This is the resolution in my heart and I am engaged for this purpose.

हे तपश्चर्या के धनी! मैं तब तक नहीं रुकूंगा जब तक मैं युद्ध में गांगेय को नहीं मार डालूंगा। मेरे हृदय में यही संकल्प है और मैं इसी उद्देश्य से लगा हुआ हूं।'

स्त्रीभावे परिनिर्विण्णा पुंस्त्वार्थे कृतनिश्चया भीष्मे प्रतिचिकीर्षामि नास्मि वार्येति वै पुनः

I am disgusted with my state as a woman and I have made up my mind to become a man. I wish to exact vengeance on Bhīṣma. I should not be dissuaded again."

मैं एक महिला के रूप में अपनी स्थिति से निराश हूं और मैंने पुरुष बनने का मन बना लिया है।' मैं भीष्म से प्रतिशोध लेना चाहता हूँ। मुझे फिर से मना नहीं किया जाना चाहिए।"

तां देवो दर्शयामास शूलपाणिरुमापतिः मध्ये तेषां महर्षीणां स्वेन रूपेण भामिनीम्

The god who wields the trident, Umā's consort, manifested himself. In the midst of the maharṣi-s, he showed his own form to the beautiful one.

त्रिशूल धारण करने वाले भगवान, उमा की पत्नी, स्वयं प्रकट हुए। महर्षियों के बीच में उन्होंने अपना सुन्दर रूप दिखाया।

छन्द्यमाना वरेणाथ सा वव्रे मत्पराजयम् वधिष्यसीति तां देवः प्रत्युवाच मनस्विनीम्

He satisfied her with a boon and she asked for my defeat. The god replied to the intelligent one, 'You will kill him."

उसने उसे वरदान देकर संतुष्ट किया और उसने मेरी हार माँगी। भगवान ने बुद्धिमान को उत्तर दिया, 'तुम उसे मार डालोगे।'

ततः सा पुनरेवाथ कन्या रुद्रमुवाच ह उपपद्येत्कथं देव स्त्रियो मम जयो युधि स्त्रीभावेन च मे गाढं मनः शान्तमुमापते

At this, the maiden spoke to Rudra. "O god! How can a woman like me be victorious in battle? O Umā's consort! Since I am a woman, my mind is deep.

इस पर युवती ने रूद्र से बात की। "हे भगवान! मेरे जैसी महिला युद्ध में कैसे विजयी हो सकती है? हे उमा की पत्नी! चूँकि मैं एक महिला हूं, मेरा मन गहरा है।

प्रतिश्रुतश्च भूतेश त्वया भीष्मपराजयः यथा स सत्यो भवति तथा कुरु वृषध्वज यथा हन्यां समागम्य भीष्मं शांतनवं युधि

O lord of beings! You have promised Bhīṣma's defeat. O one with the bull on the banner! Act so that your promise comes true, so that I can kill Bhīṣma, Śāntanu's son, in battle."

हे प्राणियों के स्वामी! आपने भीष्म की हार का वादा किया है। हे बैनर पर बैल वाले! ऐसा कार्य करो कि तुम्हारा वचन सत्य हो, ताकि मैं शांतनु के पुत्र भीष्म को युद्ध में मार सकूँ।"

तामुवाच महादेवः कन्यां किल वृषध्वजः न मे वागनृतं भद्रे प्राह सत्यं भविष्यति

The Mahādeva, with the bull on his banner, spoke truthfully to the maiden. "O fortunate one! I do not utter false words. What I have said will come true.

महादेव ने, अपने ध्वज पर बैल के साथ, युवती से सच्चाई से बात की। "हे भाग्यवान! मैं मिथ्या वचन नहीं बोलता। मैंने जो कहा है वह सत्य होगा।"

वधिष्यसि रणे भीष्मं पुरुषत्वं च लप्स्यसे स्मरिष्यसि च तत्सर्वं देहमन्यं गता सती

You will attain manhood and will kill Bhīṣma in battle. When you enter another body, you will remember everything.

तुम पुरुषत्व प्राप्त करोगे और युद्ध में भीष्म को मार डालोगे। जब आप दूसरे शरीर में प्रवेश करेंगे तो आपको सब कुछ याद रहेगा।

द्रुपदस्य कुले जाता भविष्यसि महारथः शीघ्रास्त्रश्चित्रयोधी च भविष्यसि सुसंमतः

You will be born as a mahāratha in Drupada's lineage. You will be an extremely honoured warrior who is swift in the use of weapons.

तुम द्रुपद के वंश में महारथ के रूप में जन्म लोगे। आप अत्यंत सम्मानित योद्धा होंगे जो हथियारों के इस्तेमाल में तेज़ होंगे।

यथोक्तमेव कल्याणि सर्वमेतद्भविष्यति भविष्यसि पुमान्पश्चात्कस्माच्चित्कालपर्ययात्

O fortunate one! Everything will be exactly as I have said it will be. You will become a man after some time has passed."

हे भाग्यवान! सब कुछ बिल्कुल वैसा ही होगा जैसा मैंने कहा है। कुछ समय बीतने पर तुम मनुष्य बन जाओगे।”

एवमुक्त्वा महातेजाः कपर्दी वृषभध्वजः पश्यतामेव विप्राणां तत्रैवान्तरधीयत

Having thus spoken, Mahādeva Kapardi Vṛṣadhvaja disappeared, while all the brāhmana-s looked on.

इतना कहकर, महादेव कपर्दी वृषध्वज गायब हो गए, जबकि सभी ब्राह्मण देखते रहे।

ततः सा पश्यतां तेषां महर्षीणामनिन्दिता समाहृत्य वनात्तस्मात्काष्ठानि वरवर्णिनी

In the sight of those maharṣi-s, the unblemished one, the one with the beautiful complexion, gathered wood from the forest.

उन महर्षियों के देखते-देखते वह निष्कलंक, सुंदर वर्ण वाला, जंगल से लकड़ियाँ इकट्ठा करने लगा।

चितां कृत्वा सुमहतीं प्रदाय च हुताशनम् प्रदीप्तेऽग्नौ महाराज रोषदीप्तेन चेतसा

She constructed an extremely large funeral pyre and set fire to it. O great king! When the fire was blazing, with rage igniting her senses, she said,

उसने एक बहुत बड़ी चिता बनाई और उसमें आग लगा दी। हे महान राजा! जब आग धधक रही थी, क्रोध से उसकी इंद्रियाँ प्रज्वलित हो रही थीं, उसने कहा,

उक्त्वा भीष्मवधायेति प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ज्येष्ठा काशिसुता राजन्यमुनामभितो नदीम्

"This is for Bhīṣma's destruction." O king! On the banks of the Yāmuna, the eldest daughter of Kāśi entered the fire.

"यह भीष्म के विनाश के लिए है।" हे राजा! यमुना के तट पर काशी की सबसे बड़ी पुत्री अग्नि में प्रविष्ट हो गयी।
