वैशंपायन उवाच ततः प्रभाते विमले धार्तराष्ट्रेण चोदिताः दुर्योधनेन राजानः प्रययुः पाण्डवान्प्रति

Vaiśampāyana said: The sky was clear in the morning. On the instructions of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son, Duryodhana, the kings advanced towards the Pāṇḍava-s.

वैशम्पायन ने कहाः प्रातःकाल आकाश स्वच्छ था। धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र दुर्योधन के निर्देश पर राजा पांडवों की ओर बढ़े।

आप्लाव्य शुचयः सर्वे स्रग्विणः शुक्लवाससः गृहीतशस्त्रा ध्वजिनः स्वस्ति वाच्य हुताग्नयः

All of them had bathed and purified themselves. They were garlanded and were dressed in white garments. They wielded weapons and banners. Benedictions had been pronounced on them and oblations offered into the fire.

उन सभी ने स्नान कर स्वयं को शुद्ध कर लिया। उन्हें माला पहनाई गई और सफेद वस्त्र पहनाए गए। उन्होंने हथियार और बैनर लहराये। उन पर आशीर्वाद दिया गया और अग्नि में आहुतियाँ अर्पित की गईं।

सर्वे वेदविदः शूराः सर्वे सुचरितव्रताः सर्वे कर्मकृतश्चैव सर्वे चाहवलक्षणाः

All of them were learned in the Veda-s. All of them were brave. They were excellent in the observance of vows. All of them had performed deeds. All of them possessed many auspicious signs.

वे सभी वेदों के विद्वान थे। वे सभी वीर थे. वे व्रत-पालन में निपुण थे। उन सभी ने कर्म किये थे। उन सभी में अनेक शुभ लक्षण थे।

आहवेषु पराँल्लोकाञ्जिगीषन्तो महाबलाः एकाग्रमनसः सर्वे श्रद्दधानाः परस्य च

They were extremely strong and wished to earn supreme worlds in the field of battle. All of them were focused in their minds and trusted each other.

वे अत्यंत बलशाली थे और युद्ध क्षेत्र में सर्वोच्च लोक अर्जित करने की इच्छा रखते थे। वे सभी अपने मन में एकाग्र थे और एक-दूसरे पर भरोसा करते थे।

विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ केकया बाह्लिकैः सह प्रययुः सर्व एवैते भारद्वाजपुरोगमाः

Vinda and Anuvinda from Avanti, the Kekaya-s and the Bahlikas—all of them marched out, with Bhāradvāja at the forefront.

अवंती के विंदा और अनुविंदा, केकय और बाह्लीक- ये सभी आगे बढ़े, सबसे आगे भारद्वाज थे।

अश्वत्थामा शांतनवः सैन्धवोऽथ जयद्रथः दाक्षिणात्याः प्रतीच्याश्च पार्वतीयाश्च ये रथाः

There were Aśvatthāma, Śāntanu's son, Saindhava Jayadratha, rāṭha-s from the south, the west and the mountainous regions,

Śākuni, the king of Gāndhāra, everyone from the east and the north, Śāka-s, Kirāta-s, Yāvana-s, Śibi-s and Vasāti-s.

गांधार के राजा शकुनि, पूर्व और उत्तर के सभी लोग, शक-एस, किरात-एस, यवन-एस, शिबि-एस और वासति-एस।

Their own soldiers accompanied and surrounded the mahāratha-s. All these mahāratha-s marched out in the second division of the army—

Śala, Bhurishrava, Śalya and Bṛhadbala from Kosalā followed at the rear, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son at the forefront.

कोसल से शाल, भूरिश्रवा, शाल्य और बृहदबल पीछे चल रहे थे, धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र सबसे आगे थे।

ते समेन पथा यात्वा योत्स्यमाना महारथाः कुरुक्षेत्रस्य पश्चार्धे व्यवतिष्ठन्त दंशिताः

These mahāratha-s desired to fight and were armoured. They advanced over the plain ground to the western side of Kurukṣetra.

ये महारथ युद्ध करना चाहते थे और बख्तरबंद थे। वे समतल भूमि पर कुरूक्षेत्र के पश्चिमी भाग की ओर आगे बढ़े।

दुर्योधनस्तु शिबिरं कारयामास भारत यथैव हास्तिनपुरं द्वितीयं समलंकृतम्

O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Duryodhana set up a camp there and with its decorations, it looked like a second Hāstinapura.

हे भरत वंश के वंशज! दुर्योधन ने वहां एक शिविर स्थापित किया और उसकी सजावट से वह दूसरे हस्तिनापुर जैसा लग रहा था।

न विशेषं विजानन्ति पुरस्य शिबिरस्य वा कुशला अपि राजेन्द्र नरा नगरवासिनः

O Indra among kings! Even skilled men who lived in the city, could not distinguish between the city and the camp.

हे राजाओं में इन्द्र! यहां तक ​​कि शहर में रहने वाले कुशल लोग भी शहर और डेरे के बीच अंतर नहीं कर सके।

तादृशान्येव दुर्गाणि राज्ञामपि महीपतिः कारयामास कौरव्यः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः

The Kauravya king constructed many other similar fortresses, in hundreds and thousands, for the kings.

पञ्चयोजनमुत्सृज्य मण्डलं तद्रणाजिरम् सेनानिवेशास्ते राजन्नाविशञ्शतसंघशः

O king! The hundreds of dwellings of the troops stretched out on that field of battle in a circle and extended over five yojanā-s.

हे राजा! सैनिकों के सैकड़ों आवास उस युद्ध क्षेत्र में एक घेरे में फैले हुए थे और पाँच योजन तक फैले हुए थे।

तत्र ते पृथिवीपाला यथोत्साहं यथाबलम् विविशुः शिबिराण्याशु द्रव्यवन्ति सहस्रशः

According to their energy and their strength, the lords of the earth entered their respective camps. There were thousands of these and they were opulent.

अपनी-अपनी शक्ति और शक्ति के अनुसार पृथ्वी के अधिपति अपने-अपने शिविरों में प्रविष्ट हो गये। ये हजारों की संख्या में थे और वैभवशाली थे।

For those great-souled ones and their soldiers, and also for those who would not fight, King Duryodhana apportioned out excellent food.

उन महात्माओं और उनके सैनिकों के लिये तथा जो लोग युद्ध नहीं करना चाहते थे, उनके लिये भी राजा दुर्योधन ने उत्तम भोजन बाँट दिया।

सगजाश्वमनुष्याणां ये च शिल्पोपजीविनः ये चान्येऽनुगतास्तत्र सूतमागधबन्दिनः

There were elephants, horses, men, artisans, others who followed, bards, singers, minstrels, traders, courtesans and whores.

वहाँ हाथी, घोड़े, आदमी, कारीगर, उनके पीछे आने वाले अन्य लोग, भाट, गायक, नर्तक, व्यापारी, वैश्याएँ और वेश्याएँ थीं।

वणिजो गणिका वारा ये चैव प्रेक्षका जनाः सर्वांस्तान्कौरवो राजा विधिवत्प्रत्यवैक्षत

There were also those who had gathered as spectators. In the proper way, King Kaurava attended to all of them."
