धृतराष्ट्र उवाच प्रतिज्ञाते फल्गुनेन वधे भीष्मस्य संजय किमकुर्वन्त मे मन्दाः पुत्रा दुर्योधनादयः

Dhṛtarāṣṭra asked: "When Phālguna had sworn that he would kill Bhīṣma in battle, what did my evil sons, Duryodhana and the others, do?

धृतराष्ट्र ने पूछा: "जब फाल्गुन ने शपथ ली थी कि वह युद्ध में भीष्म को मार डालेगा, तो मेरे दुष्ट पुत्रों, दुर्योधन और अन्य ने क्या किया?

हतमेव हि पश्यामि गाङ्गेयं पितरं रणे वासुदेवसहायेन पार्थेन दृढधन्वना

I can already see my father Gāṅgeya killed by Pārtha, the firm wielder of the bow, in battle, with Vāsudeva at his aide.

मैं पहले से ही अपने पिता गांगेय को वासुदेव के साथ युद्ध में, दृढ़ धनुषधारी पार्थ द्वारा मारे जाते हुए देख सकता हूँ।

स चापरिमितप्रज्ञस्तच्छ्रुत्वा पार्थभाषितम् किमुक्तवान्महेष्वासो भीष्मः प्रहरतां वरः

The great archer, Bhīṣma, is supreme among warriors. His wisdom is infinite. What did he say when he heard the words that Pārtha spoke?

महान धनुर्धर, भीष्म, योद्धाओं में सर्वोच्च हैं। उनकी बुद्धि अनंत है. जब उसने पार्थ के वचन सुने तो उसने क्या कहा?

सेनापत्यं च संप्राप्य कौरवाणां धुरंधरः किमचेष्टत गाङ्गेयो महाबुद्धिपराक्रमः

Gāṅgeya is greatly intelligent and valiant. He is extremely skilled. What did he do when he became the commander of the Kaurava-s?"

गांगेय बहुत बुद्धिमान और बहादुर हैं। वह बेहद कुशल हैं. जब वह कौरवों का सेनापति बन गया तो उसने क्या किया?"

वैशंपायन उवाच ततस्तत्संजयस्तस्मै सर्वमेव न्यवेदयत् यथोक्तं कुरुवृद्धेन भीष्मेणामिततेजसा

Vaiśampāyana said: At that, Sañjaya told him everything that was said by the infinitely energetic Bhīṣma, the aged one among the Kuru-s.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: उस समय, संजय ने उन्हें वह सब कुछ बताया जो कुरु-वंश के वृद्ध, असीम ऊर्जावान भीष्म ने कहा था।

संजय उवाच सेनापत्यमनुप्राप्य भीष्मः शांतनवो नृप दुर्योधनमुवाचेदं वचनं हर्षयन्निव

Sañjaya said: "O king! Śāntanu's son, Bhīṣma, became the commander. He delighted Duryodhana by speaking these words to him.

संजय ने कहा: "हे राजा! शान्तनु के पुत्र, भीष्म, सेनापति बने। उन्होंने दुर्योधन से ये शब्द कहकर उसे प्रसन्न किया।

नमस्कृत्वा कुमाराय सेनान्ये शक्तिपाणये अहं सेनापतिस्तेऽद्य भविष्यामि न संशयः

"I bow down before Kumāra, the general who wields a spear in his hand. There is no doubt that I will be your general.

"मैं हाथ में भाला चलाने वाले सेनापति कुमार के सामने झुकता हूं। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं है कि मैं आपका सेनापति बनूंगा।"

सेनाकर्मण्यभिज्ञोऽस्मि व्यूहेषु विविधेषु च कर्म कारयितुं चैव भृतानप्यभृतांस्तथा

I know about the tasks connected with soldiers, and in particular, about battle formations. I know the tasks that should be assigned to servants and those who are not servants.

मैं सैनिकों से जुड़े कार्यों और विशेष रूप से युद्ध संरचनाओं के बारे में जानता हूं। मैं जानता हूं कि नौकरों को और जो नौकर नहीं हैं उन्हें क्या काम सौंपा जाना चाहिए।

यात्रायानेषु युद्धेषु लब्धप्रशमनेषु च भृशं वेद महाराज यथा वेद बृहस्पतिः

O great king! In marching troops out, in engaging in battle and in pacifying enemies, I am learned, as learned as Bṛhaspati himself.

हे महान राजा! सैनिकों को आगे बढ़ाने, युद्ध में शामिल होने और शत्रुओं को शान्त करने में मैं उतना ही विद्वान हूँ जितना कि स्वयं बृहस्पति।

व्यूहानपि महारम्भान्दैवगान्धर्वमानुषान् तैरहं मोहयिष्यामि पाण्डवान्व्येतु ते ज्वरः

I know how to prepare the great battle formations of gods, gāndharva-s and humans. I will use those to confound the Pāṇḍava-s. Be bereft of your anxiety.

मैं जानता हूं कि देवताओं, गंधर्वों और मनुष्यों की महान युद्ध संरचनाएं कैसे तैयार की जाती हैं। मैं पांडवों को भ्रमित करने के लिए उनका उपयोग करूंगा। अपनी चिंता से दूर रहें.

सोऽहं योत्स्यामि तत्त्वेन पालयंस्तव वाहिनीम् यथावच्छास्त्रतो राजन्व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः

I will fight according to the right principles. I will protect your army. I will follow the sacred texts. O king! Discard the fever from your mind."

मैं सही सिद्धांतों के अनुसार लड़ूंगा. मैं तुम्हारी सेना की रक्षा करूंगा. मैं पवित्र ग्रंथों का पालन करूंगा. हे राजा! अपने मन से बुखार निकाल दो।”

दुर्योधन उवाच न विद्यते मे गाङ्गेय भयं देवासुरेष्वपि समस्तेषु महाबाहो सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते

Duryodhana said: O Gāṅgeya! I have no fear from gods and āsura-s combined. O mighty-armed one! I am telling you this truthfully,

दुर्योधन ने कहा: हे गांगेय! मुझे देवताओं और असुरों से कोई भय नहीं है। हे महाबाहु! मैं तुम्हें यह सच-सच बता रहा हूँ,

किं पुनस्त्वयि दुर्धर्षे सेनापत्ये व्यवस्थिते द्रोणे च पुरुषव्याघ्रे स्थिते युद्धाभिनन्दिनि

not to speak of now, when you are our invincible general and Droṇa, tiger among men, is stationed, eager to do battle.

अभी की बात नहीं की जा रही है, जब आप हमारे अजेय सेनापति हैं और द्रोण, पुरुषों के बीच शेर, तैनात हैं, युद्ध करने के लिए उत्सुक हैं।

भवद्भ्यां पुरुषाग्र्याभ्यां स्थिताभ्यां विजयो मम न दुर्लभं कुरुश्रेष्ठ देवराज्यमपि ध्रुवम्

The two of you, foremost among men, are stationed on my side. Victory will be mine. O foremost among the Kuru-s! It is certain that even the kingdom of the gods will not be difficult to obtain.

आप दोनों पुरुषों में श्रेष्ठ, मेरी ओर तैनात हैं। जीत मेरी होगी. हे कुरुवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! यह निश्चित है कि देवताओं का राज्य भी प्राप्त करना कठिन नहीं होगा।

रथसंख्यां तु कार्त्स्न्येन परेषामात्मनस्तथा तथैवातिरथानां च वेत्तुमिच्छामि कौरव

O Kaurava! But I wish to know the total number of rāṭha-s among us and among the enemy and also the atirāṭha-s.

हे कौरव! लेकिन मैं यह जानना चाहता हूं कि हमारे बीच और शत्रुओं के बीच और अतिरथों की कुल संख्या कितनी है।

पितामहो हि कुशलः परेषामात्मनस्तथा श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं सर्वैः सहैभिर्वसुधाधिपैः

The grandfather is skilled in knowing about the enemy and about us. With all these other lords of the earth, I wish to hear this."

दादाजी शत्रु और हमारे विषय में जानने में कुशल हैं। पृथ्वी के इन सभी अन्य प्रभुओं के साथ, मैं यह सुनना चाहता हूँ।"

भीष्म उवाच गान्धारे शृणु राजेन्द्र रथसंख्यां स्वके बले ये रथाः पृथिवीपाल तथैवातिरथाश्च ये

Bhīṣma said: "O Gāndhārī's son! O Indra among kings! O lord of the earth! Listen to the number of rāṭha-s in your own army, those who are rāṭha-s and those who are atirāṭha-s.

भीष्म ने कहा: "हे गांधारी के पुत्र! हे राजाओं में इंद्र! हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! अपनी सेना में रथों की संख्या सुनो, जो रथ हैं और जो अतिरथ हैं।

बहूनीह सहस्राणि प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च रथानां तव सेनायां यथामुख्यं तु मे शृणु

There are many thousand, tens of thousands and millions of rāṭha-s among your soldiers, but listen to the most important ones.

आपके सैनिकों में कई हजार, दसियों हजार और लाखों रथ हैं, लेकिन सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात सुनो।

भवानग्रे रथोदारः सह सर्वैः सहोदरैः दुःशासनप्रभृतिभिर्भ्रातृभिः शतसंमितैः

You are foremost among the rāṭha-s and so are all your brothers, Duḥśāsana and the others—one hundred together.

आप रथों में अग्रणी हैं और आपके सभी भाई, दु:शासन और अन्य भी - एक साथ एक सौ।

सर्वे कृतप्रहरणाश्छेद्यभेद्यविशारदाः रथोपस्थे गजस्कन्धे गदायुद्धेऽसिचर्मणि

All of you are skilled in striking with weapons and are knowledgeable about slicing and piercing. You can ride on chariots and on the shoulders of elephants. You know about fighting with clubs, swords and shields.

आप सभी लोग अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल तथा काटने-छेदने में निपुण हैं। आप रथों और हाथियों के कंधों पर सवारी कर सकते हैं। आप लाठियों, तलवारों और ढालों से लड़ने के बारे में जानते हैं।

संयन्तारः प्रहर्तारः कृतास्त्रा भारसाधनाः इष्वस्त्रे द्रोणशिष्याश्च कृपस्य च शरद्वतः

You are skilled drivers. You can strike with weapons. You are skilled in use of weapons. You can bear burdens. In the use of arrows, you are the students of Droṇa and Kṛpa Śāradvata.

आप कुशल ड्राइवर हैं. आप हथियारों से हमला कर सकते हैं. आप अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल हैं। आप बोझ उठा सकते हैं. बाणों के प्रयोग में आप द्रोण और कृपाशारद्वत के शिष्य हैं।

एते हनिष्यन्ति रणे पाञ्चालान्युद्धदुर्मदान् कृतकिल्बिषाः पाण्डवेयैर्धार्तराष्ट्रा मनस्विनः

The spirited sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra have been wronged by the Pandavyas and will kill the Pāñcāla-s, who are intoxicated with battle.

धृतराष्ट्र के उत्साही पुत्रों पर पांडवों ने अन्याय किया है और वे युद्ध के नशे में धुत्त पंचालों को मार डालेंगे।

ततोऽहं भरतश्रेष्ठ सर्वसेनापतिस्तव शत्रून्विध्वंसयिष्यामि कदर्थीकृत्य पाण्डवान् न त्वात्मनो गुणान्वक्तुमर्हामि विदितोऽस्मि ते

O foremost among the Bhārata-s! I myself will be your supreme commander. I will frustrate the Pāṇḍava-s and pierce your enemies. But I should not speak about my own qualities. They are known to you.

हे भरतवंशियों में अग्रगण्य! मैं स्वयं तुम्हारा सर्वोच्च सेनापति बनूँगा। मैं पाण्डवों को हतोत्साहित कर दूँगा और तुम्हारे शत्रुओं को घायल कर दूँगा। लेकिन मुझे अपने गुणों के बारे में नहीं बोलना चाहिए. वे आपके परिचित हैं.

कृतवर्मा त्वतिरथो भोजः प्रहरतां वरः अर्थसिद्धिं तव रणे करिष्यति न संशयः

Kritavarma of Bhojā, supreme among the wielder of weapons, is an atiratha. There is no doubt that he will accomplish your objective in battle.

भोज का कृतवर्मा, शस्त्रधारियों में सर्वोच्च, अतिरथ है। इसमें कोई संदेह नहीं कि वह युद्ध में आपका उद्देश्य पूरा करेगा।

अस्त्रविद्भिरनाधृष्यो दूरपाती दृढायुधः हनिष्यति रिपूंस्तुभ्यं महेन्द्रो दानवानिव

He is invincible in the knowledge of weapons. He can strike from a distance. He is firm in bearing weapons. He will kill your enemies, like the great Indra against the dānava-s.

शस्त्र विद्या में वह अजेय है। वह दूर से वार कर सकता है. वह शस्त्र धारण करने में दृढ़ है। वह दानवों के विरूद्ध महान इन्द्र की तरह आपके शत्रुओं को मार डालेगा।

मद्रराजो महेष्वासः शल्यो मेऽतिरथो मतः स्पर्धते वासुदेवेन यो वै नित्यं रणे रणे

It is my view that the great archer Śalya, the king of Madra, is an atiratha. He has always rivalled Vāsudeva in battle after battle.

मेरा विचार है कि मद्र देश के राजा महान धनुर्धर शल्य अतिरथ हैं। उसने युद्ध दर युद्ध में सदैव वासुदेव से प्रतिद्वंद्विता की है।

भागिनेयान्निजांस्त्यक्त्वा शल्यस्ते रथसत्तमः एष योत्स्यति संग्रामे कृष्णं चक्रगदाधरम्

He has forsaken his own sister's sons. Śalya is a supreme rāṭha. In battle, he will fight with Kṛṣṇā, the wielder of the cakra and the club.

उसने अपनी ही बहन के बेटों को छोड़ दिया है। शल्य एक सर्वोच्च रथ है। युद्ध में, वह चक्र और गदाधारी कृष्ण से युद्ध करेगा।

सागरोर्मिसमैर्वेगैः प्लावयन्निव शात्रवान् भूरिश्रवाः कृतास्त्रश्च तव चापि हितः सुहृत्

Like the waves of an ocean, he will flood the enemy with arrows. Bhurishrava, skilled in the use of weapons, is your well-wisher and will be engaged in your welfare.

वह समुद्र की लहरों के समान शत्रु को तीरों से भर देगा। अस्त्र-शस्त्र चलाने में कुशल भूरिश्रवा आपके हितैषी हैं और आपके कल्याण में लगे रहेंगे।

सौमदत्तिर्महेष्वासो रथयूथपयूथपः बलक्षयममित्राणां सुमहान्तं करिष्यति

Saumadatti is a great archer and is the leader of a mās-s of rāṭha-s. He will bring about a great reduction in the forces of the enemy.

सौमदत्ती एक महान धनुर्धर है और रथ-एस के मास-एस का नेता है। वह शत्रु की सेना में भारी कमी लाएगा।

सिन्धुराजो महाराज मतो मे द्विगुणो रथः योत्स्यते समरे राजन्विक्रान्तो रथसत्तमः

O great king! It seems to me that the king of Sindhu is the equal of two rāṭha-s. O king! That supreme among rāṭha-s will fight valiantly in battle.

हे महान राजा! मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि सिन्धु का राजा दो रथों के बराबर है। हे राजा! रथों में श्रेष्ठ वह योद्धा युद्ध में वीरतापूर्वक लड़ेगा।

द्रौपदीहरणे पूर्वं परिक्लिष्टः स पाण्डवैः संस्मरंस्तं परिक्लेशं योत्स्यते परवीरहा

Earlier, he was oppressed by the Pāṇḍava-s at the time of Draupadī's abduction. He will remember that molestation and will fight with the enemy heroes.

इससे पहले, द्रौपदी के अपहरण के समय पांडवों द्वारा उन पर अत्याचार किया गया था। वह उस छेड़छाड़ को याद रखेगा और शत्रु वीरों से युद्ध करेगा।

एतेन हि तदा राजंस्तप आस्थाय दारुणम् सुदुर्लभो वरो लब्धः पाण्डवान्योद्धुमाहवे

O king! After that, he resorted to terrible austerities. He obtained the extremely rare boon that he would fight with the Pāṇḍava-s on the field of battle.

हे राजा! इसके बाद उन्होंने घोर तपस्या का सहारा लिया। उसने अत्यंत दुर्लभ वरदान प्राप्त किया कि वह युद्ध के मैदान में पांडवों से युद्ध करेगा।

स एष रथशार्दूलस्तद्वैरं संस्मरन्रणे योत्स्यते पाण्डवांस्तात प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा सुदुस्त्यजान्

In battle, this tiger among rāṭha-s will remember that enmity. O son! He will fight with the Pāṇḍava-s, even giving up his own life, which is so difficult to abandon."

युद्ध में, रथियों के बीच यह बाघ उस शत्रुता को याद रखेगा। हे वत्स वह पांडवों से युद्ध करेगा, यहाँ तक कि अपने प्राण भी त्याग देगा, जिसे त्यागना बहुत कठिन है।"
