वैशंपायन उवाच तं भुक्तवन्तमाश्वस्तं निशायां विदुरोऽब्रवीत् नेदं सम्यग्व्यवसितं केशवागमनं तव

Vaiśampāyana said: At night, after he had eaten and rested, Vidūra told him, "O Keśava! It was not a wise decision for you to come.

वैशम्पायन ने कहा: रात में, भोजन करने और आराम करने के बाद, विदुर ने उनसे कहा, "हे केशव! आपका आना कोई बुद्धिमानी भरा निर्णय नहीं था।

अर्थधर्मातिगो मूढः संरम्भी च जनार्दन मानघ्नो मानकामश्च वृद्धानां शासनातिगः

O Janārdana! That ignorant one acts counter to artha and dharma. He insults those who deserve respect, though he himself craves for respect. He ignores the instructions of the aged.

हे जनार्दन! वह अज्ञानी अर्थ और धर्म के विपरीत कार्य करता है। वह उन लोगों का अपमान करता है जो सम्मान के पात्र हैं, हालाँकि वह स्वयं सम्मान चाहता है। वह वृद्धों के निर्देशों की उपेक्षा करता है।

धर्मशास्त्रातिगो मन्दो दुरात्मा प्रग्रहं गतः अनेयः श्रेयसां पापो धार्तराष्ट्रो जनार्दन

The foolish and evilsouled one goes against dharma and the sacred texts. O Janārdana! Dhṛtarāṣṭra's wicked son is incapable of being controlled by his superiors.

मूर्ख और दुष्टात्मा व्यक्ति धर्म और पवित्र ग्रंथों के विरुद्ध जाता है। हे जनार्दन! धृतराष्ट्र का दुष्ट पुत्र अपने वरिष्ठों द्वारा नियंत्रित किये जाने में असमर्थ है।

कामात्मा प्राज्ञमानी च मित्रध्रुक्सर्वशङ्कितः अकर्ता चाकृतज्ञश्च त्यक्तधर्मः प्रियानृतः

His soul is full of desire. He thinks himself to be wise. He harms his friends and is suspicious of everyone. He does not do what he should. He is ungrateful. He has given up dharma and is addicted to falsehood.

उसकी आत्मा इच्छा से भरी है. वह अपने आप को बुद्धिमान समझता है। वह अपने दोस्तों को नुकसान पहुंचाता है और हर किसी पर संदेह करता है। वह वह नहीं करता जो उसे करना चाहिए। वह कृतघ्न है. उसने धर्म छोड़ दिया है और झूठ का आदी हो गया है।

एतैश्चान्यैश्च बहुभिर्दोषैरेष समन्वितः त्वयोच्यमानः श्रेयोऽपि संरम्भान्न ग्रहीष्यति

He is full of these and many other vices. Because of this, he will not accept your advice and will not accept what is good for him.

वह इन तथा अन्य अनेक बुराइयों से भरा हुआ है। इस वजह से वह आपकी सलाह नहीं मानेगा और जो उसके लिए अच्छा होगा उसे भी नहीं मानेगा।

सेनासमुदयं दृष्ट्वा पार्थिवं मधुसूदन कृतार्थं मन्यते बाल आत्मानमविचक्षणः

O Madhusūdana! He sees these soldiers who have been brought together on this earth and without examining his own soul, in his foolishness, thinks that his objectives have been accomplished.

हे मधुसूदन! वह इस धरती पर एकत्र हुए इन सैनिकों को देखता है और अपनी आत्मा की जांच किए बिना अपनी मूर्खता में सोचता है कि उसका उद्देश्य पूरा हो गया है।

एकः कर्णः पराञ्जेतुं समर्थ इति निश्चितम् धार्तराष्ट्रस्य दुर्बुद्धेः स शमं नोपयास्यति

Dhṛtarāṣṭra's evil-minded son will not accept peace. He has decided that Karṇa alone is capable of defeating all the others.

धृतराष्ट्र का दुष्ट-बुद्धि पुत्र शांति स्वीकार नहीं करेगा। उसने निश्चय कर लिया कि कर्ण अकेला ही अन्य सभी को परास्त करने में सक्षम है।

भीष्मे द्रोणे कृपे कर्णे द्रोणपुत्रे जयद्रथे भूयसीं वर्तते वृत्तिं न शमे कुरुते मनः

He has the greatest faith in Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Droṇa's son and Jayadratha. Therefore, his mind is not set on peace.

उन्हें भीष्म, द्रोण, कृपा, कर्ण, द्रोण के पुत्र और जयद्रथ पर सबसे अधिक विश्वास है। अत: उसका मन शांति में नहीं लगता।

निश्चितं धार्तराष्ट्राणां सकर्णानां जनार्दन भीष्मद्रोणकृपान्पार्था न शक्ताः प्रतिवीक्षितुम्

O Janārdana! The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, together with Karṇa, have made up their minds that the Pārtha-s will not be capable of countering Bhīṣma, Droṇa and Kṛpa.

हे जनार्दन! धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्रों ने कर्ण के साथ मिलकर यह निश्चय कर लिया है कि पार्थ-भीष्म, द्रोण और कृपा का मुकाबला करने में सक्षम नहीं होंगे।

संविच्च धार्तराष्ट्राणां सर्वेषामेव केशव शमे प्रयतमानस्य तव सौभ्रात्रकाङ्क्षिणः

O Keśava! Because of brotherly feelings, you are endeavouring to bring about peace. But all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra have resolved

हे केशव! भाईचारे की भावना के कारण आप शांति लाने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। लेकिन धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्रों ने संकल्प कर लिया है

न पाण्डवानामस्माभिः प्रतिदेयं यथोचितम् इति व्यवसितास्तेषु वचनं स्यान्निरर्थकम्

that they will not return to the Pāṇḍava-s what is rightly theirs. Any words addressed towards them will be pointless.

कि वे पांडवों के पास वापस नहीं लौटेंगे जो उनका उचित अधिकार है। उनके प्रति कोई भी शब्द निरर्थक होगा।

यत्र सूक्तं दुरुक्तं च समं स्यान्मधुसूदन न तत्र प्रलपेत्प्राज्ञो बधिरेष्विव गायनः

O Madhusūdana! When good and bad advice is equal, a wise man does not speak, like a singer who is restrained in the midst of the deaf.

हे मधुसूदन! जब अच्छी और बुरी सलाह बराबर होती है, तो बुद्धिमान व्यक्ति नहीं बोलता है, जैसे एक गायक जो बहरों के बीच में संयमित होता है।

अविजानत्सु मूढेषु निर्मर्यादेषु माधव न त्वं वाक्यं ब्रुवन्युक्तश्चाण्डालेषु द्विजो यथा

O Mādhava! Those foolish ones have no reverence for others. You should not speak to them, like brāhmana-s don't to cāṇḍāla-s.

हे माधव! उन मूर्खों के मन में दूसरों के प्रति कोई श्रद्धा नहीं होती। तुम्हें उनसे बात नहीं करनी चाहिए, जैसे ब्राह्मण चांडाल से नहीं करते।

सोऽयं बलस्थो मूढश्च न करिष्यति ते वचः तस्मिन्निरर्थकं वाक्यमुक्तं संपत्स्यते तव

Because of his strength, this foolish one will not pay heed to your words. Therefore, it will be fruitless for you to speak any words to him.

यह मूर्ख अपने बल के कारण तेरी बातों पर ध्यान नहीं देगा। अत: तुम्हारा उससे कोई भी शब्द कहना व्यर्थ होगा।

तेषां समुपविष्टानां सर्वेषां पापचेतसाम् तव मध्यावतरणं मम कृष्ण न रोचते

O Kṛṣṇā! It does not appeal to me that you should descend in the midst, when all these evil-minded ones are gathered together.

हे कृष्ण! मुझे यह अच्छा नहीं लगता कि जब ये सब दुष्ट लोग इकट्ठे हैं, तो आप बीच में उतरें।

दुर्बुद्धीनामशिष्टानां बहूनां पापचेतसाम् प्रतीपं वचनं मध्ये तव कृष्ण न रोचते

They are evil in intelligence. They are wicked. They are many and they are evil in intelligence. O Kṛṣṇā! It does not appeal to me that you should speak words in their midst.

वे बुद्धि में दुष्ट हैं। वे दुष्ट हैं. वे बहुत से हैं और बुद्धि में दुष्ट हैं। हे कृष्ण! मुझे अच्छा नहीं लगता कि आप उनके बीच में बोलें.

अनुपासितवृद्धत्वाच्छ्रिया मोहाच्च दर्पितः वयोदर्पादमर्षाच्च न ते श्रेयो ग्रहीष्यति

Because of his delusion and insolence, he does not listen to his elders and accept what is superior. Because of his age, insolence, delusion and intolerance, he will not accept what is good for him.

वह अपने भ्रम और उद्दंडता के कारण अपने बड़ों की बात नहीं मानता और जो श्रेष्ठ है उसे स्वीकार कर लेता है। अपनी उम्र, धृष्टता, भ्रम और असहिष्णुता के कारण वह वह स्वीकार नहीं करेगा जो उसके लिए अच्छा है।

बलं बलवदप्यस्य यदि वक्ष्यसि माधव त्वय्यस्य महती शङ्का न करिष्यति ते वचः

He possesses a strong army. O Mādhava! If you speak to him, I have a great anxiety that he will not act in accordance with your words.

उसके पास एक मजबूत सेना है. हे माधव! यदि आप उससे बात करेंगे तो मुझे बड़ी चिंता होगी कि वह आपकी बातों के अनुरूप कार्य नहीं करेगा।

नेदमद्य युधा शक्यमिन्द्रेणापि सहामरैः इति व्यवसिताः सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्रा जनार्दन

O Janārdana! All the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra have arrived at the conclusion that even Indra, together with the immortals, is incapable of vanquishing them in battle.

हे जनार्दन! धृतराष्ट्र के सभी पुत्र इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचे हैं कि अमरों सहित इन्द्र भी उन्हें युद्ध में परास्त करने में असमर्थ हैं।

तेष्वेवमुपपन्नेषु कामक्रोधानुवर्तिषु समर्थमपि ते वाक्यमसमर्थं भविष्यति

Among those who are thus inclined and overcome by desire and anger, your words will be ineffective, no matter how effective they may be.

जो लोग इस प्रकार इच्छुक हैं और इच्छा तथा क्रोध से वशीभूत हैं, उनके लिए आपके शब्द अप्रभावी होंगे, चाहे वे कितने ही प्रभावशाली क्यों न हों।

मध्ये तिष्ठन्हस्त्यनीकस्य मन्दो; रथाश्वयुक्तस्य बलस्य मूढः दुर्योधनो मन्यते वीतमन्युः; कृत्स्ना मयेयं पृथिवी जितेति

The evil and foolish one is stationed in the midst of his army, with elephants, soldiers, chariots and horses. Duryodhana thinks that he has no reason to be afraid of anyone else's anger and that he has conquered the entire earth.

दुष्ट और मूर्ख हाथियों, सैनिकों, रथों और घोड़ों के साथ अपनी सेना के बीच में तैनात है। दुर्योधन सोचता है कि उसे किसी और के क्रोध से डरने का कोई कारण नहीं है और उसने पूरी पृथ्वी पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली है।

आशंसते धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रो; महाराज्यमसपत्नं पृथिव्याम् तस्मिञ्शमः केवलो नोपलभ्यो; बद्धं सन्तमागतं मन्यतेऽर्थम्

Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son aspires for a great kingdom on earth, without any rivals. No peace can be obtained from such a person, one who thinks that he has obtained all the prosperity that can be achieved.

धृतराष्ट्र का पुत्र पृथ्वी पर बिना किसी प्रतिद्वंद्वी के एक महान राज्य की आकांक्षा रखता है। ऐसे व्यक्ति से शांति नहीं मिल सकती, जो यह समझता है कि जितनी समृद्धि प्राप्त की जा सकती थी उसने प्राप्त कर ली है।

पर्यस्तेयं पृथिवी कालपक्वा; दुर्योधनार्थे पाण्डवान्योद्धुकामाः समागताः सर्वयोधाः पृथिव्यां; राजानश्च क्षितिपालैः समेताः

The earth has been cooked by destiny. All the warriors on earth have assembled together, for Duryodhana's sake and to fight with the Pāṇḍava-s. The kings and the lords of the earth have gathered together.

नियति ने धरती को पका दिया है. दुर्योधन की खातिर और पांडवों से युद्ध करने के लिए पृथ्वी के सभी योद्धा एक साथ इकट्ठे हुए हैं। राजा और पृय्वी के सरदार इकट्ठे हुए हैं।

सर्वे चैते कृतवैराः पुरस्ता;त्त्वया राजानो हृतसाराश्च कृष्ण तवोद्वेगात्संश्रिता धार्तराष्ट्रा;न्सुसंहताः सह कर्णेन वीराः

All of them have old enmities with you. O Kṛṣṇā! It is you who have robbed the kings of their possessions. It is because of their anxiety from you that these brave ones have sought refuge with Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son and have gathered around Karṇa.

इन सब की आपसे पुरानी दुश्मनी है. हे कृष्ण! तू ही ने राजाओं की सम्पत्ति लूट ली है। आपसे व्याकुलता के कारण ही ये वीर धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र कर्ण की शरण में गये हैं और कर्ण के पास एकत्र हुए हैं।

त्यक्तात्मानः सह दुर्योधनेन; सृष्टा योद्धुं पाण्डवान्सर्वयोधाः तेषां मध्ये प्रविशेथा यदि त्वं; न तन्मतं मम दाशार्ह वीर

They are with Duryodhana and are ready to give up their own selves. All the warriors are happy at the prospect of fighting with the Pāṇḍava-s. O brave Dāśārha! It is not my view that you should enter into their midst.

वे दुर्योधन के साथ हैं और अपना सर्वस्व त्यागने को तैयार हैं। सभी योद्धा पांडवों के साथ युद्ध करने की संभावना से खुश हैं। हे वीर दशार्ह! मेरा विचार यह नहीं है कि आपको उनके बीच में प्रवेश करना चाहिए।

तेषां समुपविष्टानां बहूनां दुष्टचेतसाम् कथं मध्यं प्रपद्येथाः शत्रूणां शत्रुकर्शन

There are many evil-minded ones gathered there. O destroyer of enemies! Why should you go in the midst of these foes?

वहाँ बहुत से दुष्टात्मा लोग इकट्ठे हैं। हे शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले! तुम्हें इन शत्रुओं के बीच में क्यों जाना चाहिए?

सर्वथा त्वं महाबाहो देवैरपि दुरुत्सहः प्रभावं पौरुषं बुद्धिं जानामि तव शत्रुहन्

O mighty-armed one! Even the gods are incapable of withstanding you in any way. O slayer of enemies! I know your power, manliness and intelligence.

हे महाबाहु! देवता भी किसी प्रकार तुम्हारा सामना करने में असमर्थ हैं। हे शत्रुओं के संहारक! मैं तुम्हारी शक्ति, पौरुष और बुद्धि को जानता हूँ।

या मे प्रीतिः पाण्डवेषु भूयः सा त्वयि माधव प्रेम्णा च बहुमानाच्च सौहृदाच्च ब्रवीम्यहम्

O Mādhava! I have the same affection for you as I have for the Pāṇḍava-s. I speak because of my affection, great reverence and friendship."

हे माधव! मुझे आपके प्रति वही स्नेह है जो पांडवों के प्रति है। मैं अपने स्नेह, अपार श्रद्धा और मित्रता के कारण बोलता हूं।"
