Yudhiṣṭhira said: "The Pāṇḍava-s and the Sṛñjaya-s have assembled, together with Janaradana, Yuyudhāna and Virāṭa. O son of Gavalgana! O son of a sūta! Tell us what Dhṛtarāṣṭra has instructed you to say."
युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: "पांडव और सृंजय जनार्दन, युयुधान और विराट सहित एकत्रित हुए हैं। हे गवलगण! हे सूतपुत्र! हमें बताओ कि धृतराष्ट्र ने तुम्हें क्या कहने का निर्देश दिया है।"

अजातशत्रुं च वृकोदरं च; धनंजयं माद्रवतीसुतौ च
आमन्त्रये वासुदेवं च शौरिं; युयुधानं चेकितानं विराटम्
Sañjaya said: "I show homage to Ajātaśatru, Vṛkodara, Dhanañjayā, the sons of Mādrī, Śauri Vāsudeva, Yuyudhāna, Cekitāna and Virāṭa,
संजय ने कहा: "मैं अजातशत्रु, वृकोदर, धनंजय, माद्री के पुत्रों, शौरी वासुदेव, युयुधान, चेकितान और विराट को श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करता हूं।"
and also to the aged lord of Pāñcāla, Pārṣata Dhṛṣṭadyumna and Yājñasenī. All of you listen to my words, which I speak for the welfare of the Kuru-s. King Dhṛtarāṣṭra welcomes peace.
और पंचाल के वृद्ध स्वामी, परशत धृष्टद्युम्न और यज्ञसेनी को भी। तुम सब मेरे वचन सुनो, जो मैं कुरु-वंश के कल्याण के लिये कहता हूँ। राजा धृतराष्ट्र शांति का स्वागत करते हैं।

शमं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभिनन्द;न्नयोजयत्त्वरमाणो रथं मे
सभ्रातृपुत्रस्वजनस्य राज्ञ;स्तद्रोचतां पाण्डवानां शमोऽस्तु
He has asked me to swiftly yoke my chariot. If the king, his relatives, his brothers and his sons so desire, let the Pāṇḍava-s find peace.
उन्होंने मुझसे तेजी से अपना रथ जोतने को कहा है. यदि राजा, उसके रिश्तेदार, उसके भाई और उसके पुत्र चाहें तो पांडवों को शांति मिले।
The Pārtha-s are endowed with all the qualities of dharma. They are steadfast, mild and upright. They have been born in a noble lineage and are non-violent and generous. They are restrained by shame and are determined in their deeds.
पार्थ-लोग धर्म के सभी गुणों से संपन्न हैं। वे दृढ़, सौम्य और ईमानदार हैं। वे एक कुलीन वंश में पैदा हुए हैं और अहिंसक और उदार हैं। वे लज्जा से वश में रहते हैं और अपने कामों में दृढ़ रहते हैं।

न युज्यते कर्म युष्मासु हीनं; सत्त्वं हि वस्तादृशं भीमसेनाः
उद्भासते ह्यञ्जनबिन्दुवत्त;च्छुक्ले वस्त्रे यद्भवेत्किल्बिषं वः
Mean deeds do not befit you. O Bhīmasena-s! Such is your spirit. Any mean act by you would be glaring, like a spot of collyrium on a white garment.
नीच कर्म तुम्हें शोभा नहीं देते। हे भीमसेन! ऐसी है आपकी भावना. आपके द्वारा किया गया कोई भी घटिया कार्य सफ़ेद परिधान पर कोलियम के धब्बे की तरह स्पष्ट होगा।
Who will knowingly commit an evil act that is seen to bring about complete destruction? That will be sin and will lead to devastation and hell. A victory obtained thus will be equal to a defeat.
कौन जानबूझकर ऐसा बुरा कार्य करेगा जिससे संपूर्ण विनाश होता हुआ दिखाई दे? वह पाप होगा और विनाश और नरक की ओर ले जायेगा। इस प्रकार प्राप्त जीत हार के बराबर होगी।

ते वै धन्या यैः कृतं ज्ञातिकार्यं; ये वः पुत्राः सुहृदो बान्धवाश्च
उपक्रुष्टं जीवितं संत्यजेयु;स्ततः कुरूणां नियतो वै भवः स्यात्
Blessed are those who act for their relatives. They are your sons, your well-wishers and your relatives. If prosperity can be ensured for the Kuru-s, they are prepared to give up their lives, which are of limited value, for your cause.
धन्य हैं वे जो अपने रिश्तेदारों के लिए कार्य करते हैं। वे आपके पुत्र, आपके शुभचिंतक और आपके रिश्तेदार हैं। यदि कुरु-वंश के लिए समृद्धि सुनिश्चित की जा सकती है, तो वे आपके लिए अपने जीवन का त्याग करने के लिए तैयार हैं, जिनका मूल्य सीमित है।

ते चेत्कुरूननुशास्य स्थ पार्था; निनीय सर्वान्द्विषतो निगृह्य
समं वस्तज्जीवितं मृत्युना स्या;द्यज्जीवध्वं ज्ञातिवधे न साधु
O Pārtha-s! If you subjugate the Kuru-s, and destroy and vanquish all your enemies, your being alive will be equal to being dead. It is not right that you should live after killing your kin.
हे पार्थ! यदि तुम कौरवों को अपने अधीन कर लोगे, और अपने सभी शत्रुओं को नष्ट कर दोगे और जीत लोगे, तो तुम्हारा जीवित रहना मृत होने के समान होगा। यह उचित नहीं है कि तुम अपने स्वजनों को मारकर जीवित रहो।

को ह्येव युष्मान्सह केशवेन; सचेकितानान्पार्षतबाहुगुप्तान्
ससात्यकीन्विषहेत प्रजेतुं; लब्ध्वापि देवान्सचिवान्सहेन्द्रान्
Who is capable of fighting with you, even if Indra and all the gods were to help? You have Keśava, Cekitāna and Sātyaki and are protected by Pārṣata's arms.
यदि इन्द्र तथा समस्त देवता भी सहायता करें तो भी कौन तुमसे युद्ध करने में समर्थ है? आपके पास केशव, चेकितान और सात्यकि हैं और आप परशत की भुजाओं से सुरक्षित हैं।

को वा कुरून्द्रोणभीष्माभिगुप्ता;नश्वत्थाम्ना शल्यकृपादिभिश्च
रणे प्रसोढुं विषहेत राज;न्राधेयगुप्तान्सह भूमिपालैः
O king! But who can withstand in battle and vanquish the Kuru-s, protected by Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Aśvatthāma, Śalya, Kṛpa and the others, and protected by Rādheya and the other lords of the earth?
हे राजा! लेकिन द्रोण, भीष्म, अश्वत्थामा, शल्य, कृप और अन्य लोगों द्वारा संरक्षित और राधेय और पृथ्वी के अन्य राजाओं द्वारा संरक्षित कौरवों को युद्ध में कौन झेल सकता है और परास्त कर सकता है?
The king who is Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son has a large army. Who can withstand it, without being killed and destroyed? Therefore, I do not see the slightest welfare, either in victory, or in defeat.
धृतराष्ट्र के पुत्र राजा के पास एक बड़ी सेना है। इसे मारे और नष्ट हुए बिना कौन झेल सकता है? इसलिए मुझे न तो जीत में, न ही हार में, किंचित भी कल्याण नजर आता है।

कथं हि नीचा इव दौष्कुलेया; निर्धर्मार्थं कर्म कुर्युश्च पार्थाः
सोऽहं प्रसाद्य प्रणतो वासुदेवं; पाञ्चालानामधिपं चैव वृद्धम्
Why should the Pārtha-s commit an act that is against dharma, like those born in low and inferior lineages? Therefore, I bow down and seek the favours of Vāsudeva and the aged lord of Pāñcāla.
पार्थ-पार्थियों को निम्न और हीन कुलों में जन्मे लोगों की तरह धर्म के विरुद्ध कार्य क्यों करना चाहिए? इसलिए, मैं झुकता हूं और वासुदेव और पंचाल के वृद्ध स्वामी की कृपा चाहता हूं।

कृताञ्जलिः शरणं वः प्रपद्ये; कथं स्वस्ति स्यात्कुरुसृञ्जयानाम्
न ह्येव ते वचनं वासुदेवो; धनंजयो वा जातु किंचिन्न कुर्यात्
With hands joined in salutation, I seek refuge with you. How can there be safety for the Kuru-s and the Sṛñjaya-s? O Vāsudeva! There is not a single one of your words that Dhanañjayā will fail to follow.
हाथ जोड़कर नमस्कार करता हूँ, मैं आपकी शरण चाहता हूँ। कुरु और सृंजय की सुरक्षा कैसे हो सकती है? हे वासुदेव! आपकी एक भी बात ऐसी नहीं है जिसका पालन करने में धनंजय असफल होंगे।
He will give up his life, if you were to ask him. O learned one! I am speaking to you, so that my objective is accomplished. The king, with Bhīṣma at the forefront, desires that there should be supreme peace amongst you."
यदि आप उससे पूछें तो वह अपने प्राण त्याग देगा। हे विद्वान! मैं तुमसे इसलिए बोल रहा हूं ताकि मेरा उद्देश्य पूरा हो. भीष्म को आगे रखकर राजा की इच्छा है कि आपके बीच परम शांति हो।"
